Former Premier League striker Darren Bent believes West Ham United will sign Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson this summer, but he thinks it might be at the expense of another player.

Speaking about Wilson on talkSPORT, the pundit heaped praise onto his qualities despite the injury problems that have slightly held him back during his time at St James’ Park down the years.

Bent could see Wilson being a top signing for a club like West Ham, though he imagines it would mean needing to move Michail Antonio on as there would surely not be room for both of them leading the line for the Hammers.

West Ham could be in the market for a new striker this summer and Wilson is the kind of proven player who could be ideal to help take them up a level under new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Still, would West Ham go through with it if it mean losing Antonio?

Wilson transfer: Bent tips Newcastle ace for West Ham

“Callum (Wilson). I am a big fan of his. I know he has had his injury problems throughout his career. But he is someone, if you look at his career and goals-per-minute ratio. He is up there with the best of them,” Bent said.

“He even got nine goals last season and he only made 20 appearances. That’s almost 1 in 2. Always a 1 in 2 man. I can understand Newcastle thinking ‘we are pushing for the Champions League and we need someone who can consistently stay fit’. They can’t have two strikers as well. Isak was better last season, but he has had his injury problems. Callum could still be playing for a Premier League side.

“What is he 32? You have Michail Antonio. If you are going to move him on, then fair enough, but I don’t think you can have both of them there.”

After giving up two goals in the first half, Jamaica are showing some fight in their 2024 Copa América against Ecuador. Despite the matchup not starting the way the Reggae Boyz had hoped, they have cut the deficit in half.

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio is the notable player, with Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey not part of this team. As a result, the veteran Antonio scored to make it 2-1 and score the first-ever Copa América goal for Jamaica.

West Ham United could see plenty of fresh faces come into the building this summer as they prepare for a transition period under new manager Julen Lopetegui and his backroom staff.

Despite his integral role in David Moyes’ setup, recent reports from The Athletic suggest that one West Ham United player’s time with the Hammers could be drawing to a close.

That man is Jamaican international Michail Antonio. At 34 years old, the seasoned forward will be at a crossroads this summer as he faces life under a new coach.

Even if he does not have a future at the London Stadium he does still remain a coveted asset for clubs seeking his experience and goal-scoring prowess.

Michail Antonio admits he could depart West Ham this summer: "Anything is possible"

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio suggests he could leave the club this summer

Antonio revealed his uncertainty about his future during an episode of The High Performance Podcast. “I don’t know, I honestly couldn’t tell you,” he confessed when asked about the possibility of a transfer. “One thing with football, anything could happen.”

The 34-year-old went on to admit that he could be sold if the club want to cash in on him this summer. It is stated in The Athletic’s report that Antonio does have plenty of suitors from Saudi Arabian clubs and the MLS.

The prospect of parting ways with Antonio poses significant considerations for West Ham United. His departure could signal a shift in the team’s attacking dynamic and require pending new boss Lopetegui to completely restructure the Hammers’ attacking depth.

For Antonio, the allure of securing a lucrative deal in a fresh environment such as the Middle East or in the United States is surely something he is leaning towards at this later stage in his illustrious career.

West Ham forward Michail Antonio has revealed this week that he is having therapy to help battle mental health issues and TalkSPORT’s Alan Brazil has stated that it would be ok if the footballer quit the sport this summer.

On the latest episode of the High Performance Podcast, the Hammers star opened up about his recent mental health struggles and his revelations have sparked people to send the 34-year-old messages of support.

Antonio stated on the podcast that he divorced his wife last year and at the same time fell out of love with football amid a period of extreme fatigue.

West Ham won the Europa Conference League last season and the forward admitted that he couldn’t even enjoy the moment, going to bed while the whole squad celebrated their achievement.

Mental health is an issue several footballers struggle with but are afraid to open up about, and many will surely be inspired by Antonio.

Speaking about the West Ham star’s story, talkSPORT pundit Alan Brazil has stated that it would be ok if the 34-year-old quit football this summer to look after himself.

Alan Brazil tells West Ham’s Michail Antonio to take a break from football

“What I would suggest, he’s a Premier League footballer and I don’t know the ins and outs of his divorce which is difficult and it’s sad, but he’ll have a lot of money I’m pretty certain. So if football’s affecting your mental health, you’re not happy, it’s ruining your life then stop doing it,” the pundit said on talkSPORT.

“Just have a month off and go to a beach somewhere and have a think, forget football and chill. Think ‘What do I want to do in the next 30-40 years?’. That’s what I’d do.

“If he decides to call it a day, he’s had a brilliant time so quit and walk away and regroup. He doesn’t have to worry about his bills where many people who struggle with mental health do.”

Although he’s yet to be announced, the Julen Lopetegui era at West Ham United could be just around the corner.

David Moyes will likely get a decent send off after the Hammers play Luton Town this weekend, a game that the Hatters must win to give themselves any chance of staying up.

West Ham looking at Tammy Abraham

The Scot might not be the only man to depart the club in the summer, with cogent reasons for the likes of Danny Ings and Michail Antonio to be sent on their way.

If one or both of the club’s current strikers are moved on, there will be a clear need to replace them, and one player that’s interesting the East Londoners is Roma’s former Chelsea hit-man, Tammy Abraham.

According to HITC, Abraham is open to the possibility of moving back to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old will likely be champing at the bit to prove he still has the ability in front of goal after an injury ravaged season saw him limited to just 195 minutes of play per WhoScored.

West Ham are known to enjoy playing with a mobile target man, so it’s a deal that makes sense.

Michail Antonio will reportedly leave West Ham United at the end of the season.

The veteran striker, who turned 34 last month, has been a key figure for David Moyes during the pair’s time in London but with the Scottish manager confirmed to be leaving his role at the end of the campaign, according to Football Insider, Antonio is expected to follow.

Although the Hammers have the option to add another year to the striker’s deal, the club will allow him to depart as a free agent.

West Ham transfer news: Solanke to replace Antonio?

On the lookout for a replacement, the Londoners will obviously prioritise a new striker this summer with Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke thought to be an option.

Dominic Solanke could replace Michail Antonio at West Ham.

Nevertheless, for Antonio, the final game of the season will be an emotional one as he prepares to say goodbye to a near-decade long spell with the club.

Since joining the Hammers from Nottingham Forest in 2015, Antonio, who has 12 international caps for Jamaica, has scored 82 goals in 305 games in all competitions.

West Ham struck a potentially fatal blow to Liverpool’s title hopes after fighting back to earn a draw on Saturday afternoon.

The Hammers went in front through Jarrod Bowen’s 20th goal of the season, before Andrew Robertson and an Alphonse Areola gave Liverpool the lead.

Michail Antonio levelled the scores with a second half header, the first time he’s scored in three consecutive games since 2021.

The forward admitted after the game he’s playing with a lot of confidence and feels like he’s going to score every time he steps onto the pitch at the moment.

Antonio is also known for his celebrations, and revealed the inspiration behind his latest one was from a trip to the theatre this week.

A point for the Hammers keeps them in contention for European qualification, but they face a tall task to get ahead of the sides above them.

Michail Antonio has headed in the equaliser for West Ham as their clash with Liverpool at the London Stadium is now level at 2-2.

The Reds fell behind in the match when Jarrod Bowen headed in just before the halftime break but Jurgen Klopp’s men were level early in the second 45 minutes courtesy of a brilliant Andy Robertson finish.

An unfortunate own goal in the 65th minute saw Liverpool take the lead in the game for the first time but Antonio has now made it 2-2.

The forward latched onto a Jarrod Bowen cross but the defending of Jarell Quansah was questionable for the equaliser.

West Ham striker Michail Antonio has become the latest player to publicly criticise manager David Moyes’ tactics.

The Hammers have been underwhelming this season with Moyes’ struggling to inspire his players.

The poor performances have put the former Everton and Manchester United manager under pressure for his job.

It has been widely reported that this is going to be his final season at West Ham, with the owners looking to replace him this summer.

A lot of criticism on him has been regarding his passive style of play despite the fact that they have a number of exciting young talent in the team.

Antonio blames Moyes’ tactics in the 1st leg vs Bayer Leverkusen

James Ward-Prowse has previously spoken about his manager focusing too much on nullifying his opponents, rather than allowing West Ham to be the ones hurting their opposition.

And now Antonio has also spoken about his team being very conservative in their approach.

Speaking to TNT Sports (quotes via Hammer News), Antonio pulled no punches as he made it clear the tie was lost due to negative tactics in the first leg.

He said:

“Disappointed and obviously last week we gave them a bit too much respect.”

“This week we came out and showed them what we could do…

“One hundred per cent (it was hard to maintain the way West Ham played in the first half of the second leg). It was very high tempo football, us chasing them down, high pressure…

“We made quite a few chances… This week we made it more of an even game.

“But just disappointed with how we played last week to be honest. I thought we gave them too much respect (end up) with a 2-0 deficit and it was just too hard to get it back this week.”

West Ham currently sit 8th in the league, having won 13 games and lost 11 while drawing 9.

That is not the best considering the pool of talent they have in the team. Perhaps with a manager who is more progressive and attacking minded, those players will be allowed to fulfil their true potential.

West Ham crashed out of the Europa League following a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen at the London Stadium.

The Hammers faced an uphill battle having lost the first leg 2-0, but played well particularly in the first half and took the lead through Michail Antonio.

Few would have thought a comeback was possible against a side unbeaten all season, and the Hammers might rue they couldn’t find a second goal in that dominant first half.

Jeremie Frimpong’s late deflected strike meant the home side couldn’t even leave with a consolation win.

Speaking after the game goalscorer Antonio believed decisions had gone against West Ham and described it as playing against 13 or 14 with the officials.

Although David Moyes’ side crashed out he has guided the Hammers to the latter stages of European competition for three consecutive seasons, something they might not see again for many years.

Full focus will turn to the league now as West Ham aim to make sure they are in some form of European competition next season.
