Watford set for heavyweight investment into club

It was only two seasons ago that Watford were in the Premier League but as we’ve seen time and again, things can change very quickly in football.

The Hornets had enjoyed a number of seasons in the English top-flight over the past decade, but since being relegated to the Championship, things have gone backwards for the club.

Watford want Anthony Joshua to invest

Last season Watford finished in 15th place with 61 goals scored and 61 conceded. They were a mammoth 17 points from getting into the Play-Offs, and just six points from being relegated into the third tier of English football.

Given that their form towards the end of the campaign was amongst the worst of all the teams in the division, had it gone on much longer, there could’ve been a very real threat of them going down.

Watford are seeking more investment

However, they live to fight another day in the Championship but it’s clear that things have to change.

To that end, according to The Athletic (subscription required), the club have approached Watford native, Anthony Joshua, regarding investing in the club.

As Goal also note, Watford is the club that the heavyweight boxer supports, so this is a move that will tug at the heart strings.

Whether any talks, which are described as being still at the early stages, will progress to anything more serious will only be seen over the course of the next few weeks.

The boxer might do well listening to Elton John to understand what he would be getting in return for ploughing his hard-earned into the club.

If Watford are unable to persuade him or anyone else to put a significant chunk of money in, however, then that doesn’t bode well for their immediate future.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold makes intriguing non-football related investment

He’s well known for pinging 60-yard balls across Anfield that’ll land at your feet, but less is known about Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold the investor.

The right-back cum marauding midfielder is, like many of his generation of football players, flush with cash so to speak. Indeed, according to Capology, Alexander-Arnold earns a whopping £180k per week, or £9.3m per year.

With that sort of cash coming into his bank account, it’s understandable why he might want to re-invest some of it elsewhere.

To that end, it’s been announced that he’s joined with golfing heavyweight, Rory McIlroy, boxer Anthony Joshua, fellow footballer, Juan Mata, and Kansas City Chiefs players, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, to take a £173m strategic investment in the Formula One team, Alpine Racing, per The Independent.

It’s an intriguing prospect both for the sport of F1 and for those involved with the investment.

Clearly, all will seek a return on the moneys put into the pot, and it will be interesting to see if the amount invested goes some way to making Alpine a real force in the sport in future.

Currently sixth in the 2023 F1 constructors’ championship, Alpine can also count on the backing of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who famously own Wrexham.

The entrepreneurs also have a 24 per cent stake in the team per The Independent.

Inter Miami will kick-off its 2021 Major League Soccer season in a couple of weeks. Nonetheless, club co-owner David Beckham took time to welcome a fellow compatriot to show him around the Inter Miami stadium.

British boxer Anthony Joshua was in South Florida, and the 31-year-old stopped by to visit Beckham. After spending time together, the two posed for a picture, which the co-owner uploaded to Instagram. The MLS club continues to grow its profile as Beckham hopes that Inter Miami becomes one of the league’s marquee clubs.

As for Joshua, it’s perhaps a getaway from his training as he will resume his rivalry with Tyson Fury as both boxers will fight twice this year.

Although football has cleaned up its act on the pitch, there was a time when players looked as though they could quite easily earn a living playing by the Queensbury rules rather than Football Association.

Players such as Chelsea’s ‘Chopper’ Harris, Leeds United’s Norman ‘bites yer legs’ Hunter and others were infamous in the 1970s and 80s for the combative way in which they played the beautiful game.

Fast forward a decade or two, and there were a handful of others that were cut from similar stock.

Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane spring to mind, and it’s the former Man United captain that Anthony Joshua thinks could’ve made it in the ring rather than on the pitch.

“If I was to pick a footballer who could make a great boxer… Roy Keane,” he said during a video for DAZN, cited by the Daily Star.

“Manchester United need someone like him, to get in there and say it how it is, doesn’t take any nonsense.

“In boxing, that’s the type of person you need to have.”

There will undoubtedly be a number of Keane’s opponents that will attest to the fact that he was as good with his fists as with his feet.

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has sent a good luck message to two-time heavyweight champion of the world Anthony Joshua ahead of his title defence against Kubrat Pulev tonight.

Rashford, predominantly a footballer, has spread his influence into previously unchartered territory this year – notably with his efforts to ensure every child in the UK knows where their next meal will be coming from.

One place where we wouldn’t expect him to see, even now, is in the ring, particularly with Anthony Joshua, whose good side he appears to be keen to stay on – and understandably so.

Joshua will be fighting Kubrat Pulev tonight with his belts on the line for the first time since he won them back from Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia. Rashford has wished his compatriot luck ahead of the fight.

Report claims Riyad Mahrez’s wife flirted with world champ Anthony Joshua in London club

According to the Sun, the wife of Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez, Rita, flirted with world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua at London club Tape on Friday.

The Sun claim that the 26-year-old model and singer was seen with her hand on the knee of Joshua. The Sun add that Mahrez and his wife have agreed a trial split, with the pair currently living 200 miles apart.

This news comes only a month after the Sun reported that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder flirted with Rita.

Mahrez’s wife seems to have been in the public eye a fair bit recently, the Sun also revealed that Rita was involved in a heated row with the girlfriend of Riyad’s Manchester City teammate, Leroy Sane.

Anthony Joshua recently reclaimed his world heavyweight titles after defeating Mexican-American Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia at the start of the month.

The Sun also add that Joshua shunned Rita once he learned that she was Riyad’s wife, the Sun’s source claimed that the superstar boxer didn’t wish to step on anyone’s toes.

Joshua seems like a class act in an outside the ring. Lesser men would’ve acted less respectfully if they were in a similar situation.

We’ve got nothing but respect for Riyad Mahrez, details of his personal life being in the public eye don’t seem to have affected his performances on the pitch.

John Terry and Anthony Joshua crossed paths in Dubai over the weekend, with the pair out in the Middle East for very different reasons.

The Aston Villa defender is currently sidelined with a foot injury as he will miss a significant period which could yet prove costly to Steve Bruce’s side as they aim for promotion back to the Premier League this season.

In contrast, Joshua is having a holiday and soaking up the sun after he successfully defended his heavyweight titles against Carlos Takam in Cardiff last month.

However, it’s a small world as the pair managed to bump into each other over in Dubai as seen in the image below shared by Terry on his Instagram account.

It’s not often people standing next to Joshua don’t disappear in his shadow, but Terry’s clearly a big fella himself even with a hobble as he posed with his crutches and his injured foot hanging in the air…

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has provided us with plenty of memorable moments both on and off the pitch, as his wit certainly matches his football abilities.

The 36-year-old was in Cardiff at the weekend to see Anthony Joshua successfully defend his heavyweight titles against Carlos Takam, while he was also seen in the Brit’s dressing room before he entered the ring.

Joshua has since revealed details of their conversation and has shared the advice that the Swede offered him, and it was typical Ibrahimovic talk.

From the man who has given us countless classic lines over the years, he pulled Joshua up on something as he seemingly wants him to be less humble.

“Zlatan loves his boxing and his mindset is phenomenal but he picked me up on something I said after my fight with Wladimir Klitschko earlier in the year,” Joshua said, as reported by Sky Sports.

“He pointed out that I’d said ‘I’m not perfect, but I’m trying’. Then he said ‘No, no no. What you must is say is ‘I am perfect and I’m not trying!'”

Having enjoyed himself in Wales at the weekend, Ibrahimovic will now continue to focus on regaining full fitness and recovering from the knee injury that has sidelined him since last season.

Man Utd will undoubtedly be waiting for his return, as although Romelu Lukaku has started life at Old Trafford well, the addition of a world-class individual like the former AC Milan and Barcelona star will be a boost for all concerned as the Red Devils look to compete on various fronts.

Failing that, it sounds as though Ibrahimovic is ready to teach Joshua some new skills if he wants to learn a different trade…

They’ve both got big dates in the diary this month, but Anthony Joshua broke away from training on Tuesday as he had a visitor in Marcus Rashford at the gym.

The heavyweight champion takes on Kubrat Pulev in Cardiff on October 28 as he continues his march towards becoming the unified champion in the division.

He evidently has a fan in Rashford, who dropped by training this week and captioned his snap: “Nice to see the champ”.

The 19-year-old probably didn’t get much in the way of a motivational speech as Joshua is a Watford fan having grown up there, but he would likely have shared a few words ahead of United’s big clash with bitter rivals Liverpool this weekend.

Both Rashford and the Red Devils will need to be as ruthless as Joshua is in the ring on Saturday, as they face the toughest test of their season to date and will want to make a statement to prove that they are genuine title contenders this year.

As for Joshua, he’ll get back to training with a view of seeing off Pulev in his next bout and will undoubtedly be aiming for more big nights in the future.

News broke on Monday night that Rio Ferdinand is set to officially announce his decision to become a pro boxer within the next 24 hours.

As reported by The Telegraph, the ex-Manchester United defender will confirm his plans on Tuesday afternoon.

But Ferdinand has already called out three of the game’s heavyweights, albeit it in a very tongue-in-cheek manner.

Earlier this year, Ferdinand shared a cringeworthy video of himself banterously shouting (and shamelessly namedropping) while punching his trainer’s hands.

He began: “Tony Bellew… I’m here. I’m waiting, I’m ready pal. Are you ready?

The 38-year-old continued: “David Haye, you want some? I’m here mate. I’m here, working.”

Finally, Ferdinand made sure everyone knew he was ‘oooooh friends’ with Anthony Joshua as he barked: “AJ, we had a holiday together mate… Dubai. I’ll take you out. I will cut you down.

“I’ll take you out AJ, come on son! You want some?”
