Leeds United blocked Plymouth Argyle’s attempts to sign Darko Gyabi on a permanent transfer before sanctioning a second loan this summer, according to Neil Dewsnip.

The 20-year-old central midfielder only has five senior appearances under his belt for the Whites to date — including one in the Premier League — but played 10 games after joining Plymouth on loan for the second half of last season before his campaign was cut short by a groin injury.

Despite that spell on the sidelines, Gyabi impressed enough to convince Argyle to bring him back to Home Park for the 2024/25 campaign.

However, according to director of football Dewsnip, Plymouth originally pushed for a permanent transfer, only to be knocked back by Leeds.

“One of our methods of success over the last few years is having had players on loan, and then being able to go back to buy them in some cases,” Dewsnip told Plymouth Live.

“Darko wasn’t on the market to be bought. Leeds didn’t encourage that discussion. We did have a little nibble at that but it wasn’t really on their agenda, but to get him back on loan was the next best thing we could do, and that’s what we have achieved.

“We all thought he contributed massively last year so the fact he was injured at the end of the season, that was really disappointing for me and Nance (first team coach Kevin Nancekivell) not to be able to select him. So to get him back is great, I’m really looking forward to seeing him play.”

Dewsnip addresses Gyabi recall concerns

Plymouth suffered last season due to the likes of Finn Azaz, Kaine Kesler Hayden and Luke Cundle being recalled from loans during the campaign.

But Dewsnip has attempted to relieve supporter worries that could happen again this season with Gyabi, revealing Leeds only have a short window during which they can terminate the loan.

“The best we can do, which we have achieved, is to design the agreement with an incredibly short period that Leeds United can request him back,” he said.

“Leeds United are more than okay with that. I don’t want to mislead the fans, of course, but I would be incredibly surprised if they recall him.”

Leeds duo Charlie Cresswell and Darko Gyabi are set to follow Archie Gray out of the Elland Road exit door according to reports.

The Whites are facing the prospect of losing a number of players this summer having failed to gain promotion back the Premier League last season after losing the play-off final to Southampton.

Gray, who had a breakthrough season for Leeds season making 52 appearances in all competitions is set complete a £40m move to Tottenham, with Joe Rodon going in the other direction in a separate transaction for a reported £10m.

Cresswell and Gyabi set to follow Gray out of Leeds

Cresswell was reportedly set to join French side Toulouse for a proposed £3.8m and was believed to have completed his medical on Sunday.

However, according to  BBC Sport the move could now be off after he failed to agree personal terms with the Ligue 1 outfit.

Cresswell struggled for minutes last season and only made seven appearances with just five of those coming in the Championship.

Darko Gyabi in action for Leeds.
Gyabi is reportedly set to join Plymouth on loan again.

Football Insider report that youngster Gyabi could be set to rejoin Plymouth on loan having spent the second half of last season with the club.

The 20-year-old  joined Leeds from Manchester City in 2022 and made ten appearances for the Pilgrims as they beat the drop in the Championship.

If Gyabi does return to Plymouth he will have the chance to work under new manager Wayne Rooney.

The talented youngster is out of contract with Leeds in 2026, but a season away playing regularly could see him have a role to play for the club in the 2025/2026 campaign.

Having lost Gray Leeds will be desperate to keep hold of the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Willy Gnonto and Georginio Rutter this summer to ensure they stand the best chance of winning promotion back to the Premier League next season.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is set to have a busy summer at Elland Road.

After their failure to win promotion to the Premier League, Leeds are going to go through a major overhaul of their squad.

Some of their big name players could leave the club, like Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto, while some of the players that were sent out on loan like Diego Llorente, Max Wober, Jack Harrison face an uncertain future at the club.

The Whites will have to endure another season in the second tier of English football and Farke has been given the opportunity to assemble a squad decent enough to challenge for the Championship title again.

During their seasons on loan at Championship teams, Sam Greenwood and Darko Gyabi may not have performed well enough to be included in Leeds’ squad come August.

Leeds Live reports that Greenwood and Gyabi could be permitted to go on loan again.

Daniel Farke has big decisions to make at Leeds United.

According to the report, both players risk losing their spots in the team for the upcoming campaign if they don’t make an impression on Farke during the preseason.

Both players face an uncertain future at Leeds United

Out of the two players, Greenwood got the opportunity to show his talent but he failed to make a huge impact at Middlesbrough.

His goal and assist output is something not good enough for a player who should be playing for Leeds.

As for Gyabi, he was unlucky with fitness issues and could not play for Plymouth Argyle in the last two months of the season.

Both could be sent out on loan again and Farke would be hoping that they come back as better players who can challenge for a spot in the starting line up.

Leeds United could reportedly let as many as six players go this January as a number of their squad want out of Elland Road.

Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross has looked into the current situation at the club, with manager Daniel Farke perhaps set to clear out as many as six players this winter.

According to Cross, Joe Gelhardt, Kristoffer Klaesson, Mateo Joseph, Lewis Bate, Leo Hjelde and Darko Gyabi are all players who could be heading for the exit door at Leeds.

Leeds have a lot of competition for places in their current squad after a busy summer, and it’s clear that there are now plenty of players who will have to move elsewhere in order to play regular first-team football.

The entire summer transfer window for Leeds United has been one of tension and drama, and even in the final few hours that theme has continued.

Daniel Farke and 49ers Enterprises have overseen an incredibly volatile few months in terms of transfers but the good news for both manager and board is that it will soon be over.

Things should settle down significantly before likely ramping up again in January. That will at least give Farke a few months to ensure that his starting XIs remain consistent and positive results will hopefully follow.

One player that’s unlikely to be at the club beyond Friday night’s deadline is 19-year-old, Darko Gyabi.

According to Football Insider sources, the youngster was set to sign for Fleetwood Town, but fellow Championship side, Swansea City, are set to hijack the deal at the 11th hour.

The deal is expected to be a season-long loan, and it will afford the midfielder the opportunity to get some regular game time under his belt.

It’s not clear whether the Elland Road outfit will look for a late window replacement for the player, however, given there are just a few hours left in the window, that would seem to be highly unlikely.

Paul Robinson has given his opinion on Leeds’ potential signing of Manchester City midfielder Darko Gyabi.

With Kalvin Phillips edging closer to joining Manchester City, Leeds are targeting one of Pep Guardiola’s players. Gyabi is set to join Leeds, according to Yorkshire Evening Post, and former player Robinson has had his say on the transfer.

“He’s not going to be in the first-team next year or help them stay in the Premier League. Yes, he’s a player for the future and yes, he’s obviously a talent. But you’ve got to question why Manchester City would let him go at that age if he is a top talent,” said Robinson, speaking to MOT Leeds News.

The chance of an 18-year-old coming in and being an adequate replacement for Phillips is slim, so Leeds fans will be hoping he isn’t the only midfielder brought in this summer.

Liverpool have reportedly had to apologise to Manchester City after controversial comments made by their former manager Roy Evans.

During commentary duty for the Reds on an Under-18s clash, Evans remarked that there were not many “normal names” in the team, apparently in response to City youngster Darko Gyabi, according to the Daily Mail.

MORE: Good news for Liverpool after latest Real Madrid transfer decision

Gyabi is a 16-year-old midfielder from London, and Evans’ comments are certainly poorly judged and could come across as quite xenophobic.

The Mail claim that Evans himself also reached out to Gyabi’s representatives to apologise, while Liverpool got in touch with City about the pundit’s remarks.

Liverpool and City don’t have the best relationship at the moment anyway after becoming major title rivals in recent seasons, so this incident won’t have helped ease tensions between the clubs.

Let’s hope Evans can learn from this mistake and that Gyabi can simply continue to do his talking on the football pitch, with the teenager widely regarded as one of the most exciting talents in the club’s academy.
