Tottenham Hotspur begin their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea on Saturday, with a fixture against reigning J League champions, Vissel Kobe.

By the end of the tour, which comes a week later in Seoul against Bayern Munich, Ange Postecoglou should have a reasonable idea as to how his squad are shaping up for the new Premier League season, which begins in just over three weeks time.

The North Londoners fell away at the back end of the 2023/24 season, and a few late reverses ensured that they failed to qualify for the Champions League, with Aston Villa nipping in to take their place.

Postecoglou will arguably look at himself first and foremost and wonder if he could’ve done anything better or differently which may have changed the dynamic at the business end.

A thorough and intensive look at the squad as a whole would surely have followed, and allowed the Australian to make a few decisions for the good of the team.

Though those clubs expected to be around them during the new Premier League season will have also strengthened during the summer, Spurs need to produce the type of form that they showed at the start of last season for the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign.

Bringing in quality players will help them to do just that, and Ipswich Town have inadvertently given them a helping hand in that regard.

Tottenham will benefit from Ipswich’s purchase of Jack Clarke

According to i sport (subscription required), they have offered Sunderland £18m for Jack Clarke, and given that Tottenham negotiated a 40% sell-on clause when they sold him to the Black Cats, they stand to make millions from the transfer.

That money is likely to go straight into club coffers, and gives Postecoglou and Daniel Levy a little more breathing space in terms of Financial Fair Play where transfers are concerned.

Former Leeds United manager Simon Grayson says Jack Clarke would be an ‘incredible addition’ to the club’s attack, if they can attract him back to Elland Road.

Clarke was sold to Tottenham in July 2019 but after a series of loan spells, was moved on a permanent basis to Sunderland in 2022 — following a strong loan spell in League One for the Black Cats in 2021/22.

The 23-year-old winger enjoyed the best season of his career so far in 2023/24, notching 15 goals and four assists in 40 Championship appearances despite Sunderland falling away from the promotion race to finish 16th.

Clarke’s form has reportedly attracted the attention of a number of Premier League clubs, with West Ham most strongly linked after Burnley also had a bid rejected last summer.

Grayson backs Leeds return for ‘incredible’ Clarke

Sunderland are understood to be resigned to losing Clarke this summer with bids expected imminently.

But a return to Leeds United? It seems unlikely but ex-boss Grayson would certainly like to see Clarke join an already-talented Whites forward line for their promotion push next season.

“Jack Clarke has had an exceptional season but it will have to be a Premier League team he leaves Sunderland for,” Grayson said (via Yorkshire Evening Post).

“Leeds were forced to sell him for financial reasons previously but he would be an incredible addition. With Willy Gnonto, Dan James, Crysencio Summerville, Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe, Leeds have attackers that would get in so many Premier League teams. Let’s get to the summer and see what happens, he would be an unbelievable weapon to have.”

Leeds United academy graduate Jack Clarke emerged at Elland Road under Marcelo Bielsa’s debut season at Leeds.

Following his signing by Tottenham, he was immediately loaned back to Leeds but faced challenges on the pitch before eventually signing for north east outfit Sunderland.

Now, Clarke’s future at Sunderland appears uncertain as the Black Cats are unlikely to make a late surge for the Championship play-offs. Former Leeds player Carlton Palmer has raised the question of whether the Lilywhites could consider re-signing him.

After stints at Stoke, QPR, and Sunderland on loan, Clarke made just four senior appearances for Spurs. He then joined Sunderland permanently, where he has contributed to 49 goals in 105 matches.

This season he has scored 15 goals and providing four assists in 35 games for Sunderland, despite being currently sidelined due to injury.

In January, Lazio’s £15m bid for him was turned down, as Sunderland are reportedly holding out for £21m, according to Calcio Mercato.

Dean Jones recently stated on GIVEMESPORT that if Leeds achieve promotion, Jack Clarke is the type of player they would pursue. Former Whites’ midfielder Palmer addressed these rumours, stating to Football League World that signing Clarke is an unrealistic option for the club.

“I think it’s highly unlikely that Clarke will return. First of all, Leeds have got to get promoted. There are also a host of clubs who are in for him, and I can’t see him going back to his old club; I just can’t see it.”

Sunderland are reportedly resigned to losing Jack Clarke in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to a recent report from Football Insider, who claims the Black Cats are set to see a host of Premier League clubs try and sign the 23-year-old at the end of the season.

Enjoying an excellent individual campaign which has included 15 goals in 33 Championship games, Clarke has been a stand-out performer.

However, with Sunderland struggling to reach the play-off spots the club looks likely to remain in the second tier, which would see the winger as a huge contender to move on.

West Ham and Brentford are among the sides interested in the former Spurs attacker but more sides are expected to join the race.

Currently valued at around £15 million (TM) and with just two years left on his deal, Sunderland will know they face a huge decision.

Since joining the Black Cats two years ago, Clarke, who has represented England at under-20 level on six occasions, has scored 27 goals and registered 22 assists in 105 games in all competitions.

The January transfer window provided a bit of a mixed bag for West Ham United.

David Moyes would’ve arguably been delighted with the loan capture of Man City’s England international, Kalvin Phillips, whilst also managing to offload Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma, both of whom have been peripheral players for the Scot this season.

The issue the Hammers manager will have had is that, once again, a striker wasn’t brought in, meaning that for the remainder of the campaign, the club are going to have to rely on Michail Antonio and Danny Ings to score the goals to fire them into Europe for next season.

That could become problematic for the East Londoners as Antonio only has two goals all season, the last one scored back in August according to WhoScored, whilst Ings hasn’t registered at all.

One player that West Ham were heavily linked with in January was Sunderland youngster, Jack Clarke, but as he told Sky Sports after Sunderland’s game against Middlesbrough, he’s fine where he is.

“Honestly, I’m happy to be here, and I’m still enjoying every minute in a Sunderland shirt and for me, the stuff that gets said on the outside doesn’t seem to bother me,” he said (h/t Hammers News).

“As long as I’m coming in every day and wearing a Sunderland shirt I’m happy.”

It isn’t clear of Financial Fair Play concerns stopped the Irons from firming up any initial interest, but their lack of goal scorers – Jarrod Bowen and Mo Kudus notwithstanding – could become a real problem for them during the latter part of the season.

Sunderland has rejected a bid from an Italian club for winger and West Ham target Jack Clarke as he is reportedly not for sale.

The Hammers have been keen to add some reinforcements to the squad this January window as they try to cope with the congested fixture list.

Currently sixth in the Premier League table, David Moyes’ side also qualified for the next round of the Europa League after finishing at the top of their group.

This has added an extra strain on the squad as they have already suffered a series of injury blows to Michail Antonio, Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen.

In order to help them finish this season on the front foot, they have signed Kalvin Phillips on a loan deal from Manchester City but were also eyeing up Sunderland star Clarke.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Championship club rejected a €16 million bid from a Serie A side for the player as they consider him ‘not for sale’ until the summer transfer window.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Rowett has been full of praise for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke as the 23-year-old continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League.

West Ham, Sheffield United and Burnley are believed to be keen on Clarke, who has been shining in the Championship this season.

Speaking about the Sunderland star on The Transfer Show on Sky Sports, Gary Rowett has stated that Clarke is a player who can do it at ‘any level’ and he is showcasing great end product this season, comparing him to West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen.

“I think he is a little bit like Jarrod Bowen,” said Rowett. “In the sense that he has done very, very well in the Championship for a few years now.

“I actually met him and tried to sign him at Millwall on loan, at one stage. I think he was at Tottenham, at the time. He moved to Spurs at a young age from Leeds. Probably a bit too much was expected of him. I think the loans have really, really helped him.

“He has got great end product. He has shown that this season. One v One, he can beat a player. I think he can do that at any level.

“I see him a little like Jarrod Bowen, at the time (when he was at Hull City). Can he make that step? Is he good enough to make that step? But when you have seen Bowen handle it so well, there is no reason why Clarke can’t either.”

Sunderland’s Jack Clarke is currently a subject of interest from Crystal Palace in the January transfer window.

The London club, experiencing goal-scoring struggles this season, has reportedly initiated contact with Sunderland regarding a potential move for the attacker.

As per Football Insider’s latest report, Sunderland values Clarke at £20 million. However, the player is reportedly hesitant about joining another London-based club, given his prior association with Tottenham.

Clarke had minimal first-team opportunities at Spurs, leading to his move to Sunderland in 2021 for a reported fee of £750,000. Notably, the deal included a 25% sell-on clause, indicating that Tottenham stands to gain a quarter of any future transfer fee involving Clarke.

The 23-year-old left-winger has been in impressive form in the Championship this season, contributing to 12 goals and 2 assists in 26 appearances.

Aside from Crystal Palace, other clubs expressing interest in signing him reportedly include Brentford and West Ham.

Tottenham’s financial gain could potentially reach around £5 million based on the speculated £20 million transfer fee.

Only Man United have less than West Ham’s 33 goals scored in 2023/24, which evidences why the Hammers have concerns despite the seemingly decent goalscoring form of Jarrod Bowen and Mo Kudus.

The east Londoners are in the top six on merit but have two or three clubs breathing down their necks and a five point gap to Tottenham in fifth.

At this point their season could go either way, therefore a diligent transfer or two now could be the difference maker.

According to The Telegraph (subscription required), Sunderland’s Jack Clarke, the fourth highest scorer in the Championship, is being targeted for a January switch.

David Moyes’ need for a proven striker is acute, given the club’s current injury situation, and the outlet have also linked another former Tottenham striker in Steven Bergwijn to the Hammers.

Over the course of the next few weeks, aside from their FA Cup replay at Bristol City, West Ham will play against Sheffield United, Bournemouth, Man United and Arsenal.

All four games could prove to be problematic in some way, though Moyes’ side have already beaten the Red Devils and the Gunners this season – without conceding – with a virtually full-strength squad.

If they’re unable to secure either potential signing and drop out of the European places as a result, they’ll only have themselves to blame at the end of the season.
