Newcastle are in talks with Sheffield United to sign forward William Osula and have made an offer of £15m according to Sky Sports.

It’s been a quiet summer at St James’ Park with Lloyd Kelly and goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos arriving at the club, whilst Lewis Hall’s loan move from Chelsea became permanent.

The Magpies will need further signings if they are to secure qualification for  European football and are thought to be in the market for attacking reinforcements.

Newcastle in talks for Osula

Newcastle are believed to be looking for a winger with doubts surrounding the future of Miguel Almiron, and they are thought to be admirers of West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen and Chelsea’s Noni Madueke, with a move for either viewed as highly unlikely.

However, it appears Eddie Howe’s side are close to bolstering their attacking options with Sky Sports reporting they have tabled a bid worth £15m for Osula and are in talks with Sheffield United.

The 20-year-old made 21 Premier League appearances for the Blades last season, but failed to score as they were relegated to the Championship, although he did manage to score three goals in two FA Cup appearances.

Osula, who is a Denmark under-21 international can play as a winger or a striker and that versatility is likely to appeal to Howe.

The forward joined Sheffield United’s academy back in 2018, and had a successful loan spell at Derby during the 2022/2023 campaign in which he scored five goals in 21 appearances.

It appears a deal is close and if Osula does make the switch to St James’ Park he will face stiff competition in the attacking areas.

He would likely be third choice striker behind Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, and would be competing with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron if he remains at the club.

Leicester City defender Harry Souttar seems to be heading for the exit door at the King Power after being left out of the squad for Friday’s pre-season friendly against Palermo.

It’s been a turbulent summer for the Foxes after winning the Championship title last season, and they have lost both manager Enzo Maresca and star player Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea.

The club have subsequently appointed former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper as their new manager and have made some additions to the squad to ensure they have the best chance of survival.

Souttar set to leave Leicester

The Foxes have signed the likes of Caleb Okoli, Michael Golding and Bobby De Cordova-Reid, whilst winger Issahaku Fatawu has made his loan move from Sporting Lisbon permanent.

However, a number of players are also set to leave the King Power, and one of those is Australian international Souttar.

Harry Souttar in action for Leicester City.
Souttar is likely to leave Leicester on loan this summer.

The defender was left out of the squad for the pre-season friendly against Palermo despite being involved in the first two games against Villarreal and Shrewsbury.

It’s been reported that the 25-year-old could be set to leave the club on loan, and a number of Championship clubs are said to be interested with Sheffield United and Souttar’s former club Stoke said to be leading the race.

The Australian joined Leicester from Stoke in January 2023 for £15m and made 12 appearances in the Premier League, but couldn’t help the club avoid relegation under Brendan Rodgers.

Souttar wasn’t in favour under Maresca last season and made just four appearances in all  competitions under the Italian.

Despite the arrival of a new manager it would appear that Souttar’s future at least temporarily lies away from the King Power, and he will have likely dropped further down the pecking order following the arrival of Okoli.

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom left sought-after midfielder Sander Berge out of his matchday squad yesterday.

The Blades took on National League high-flyers Wrexham AFC in the FA Cup yesterday at The Racecourse Ground in an emphatic 3-3 draw that had supporters and neutrals hanging on every second of the match.

A notable omission was Berge, who has been one of United’s standout performers since he arrived in Sheffield. Several clubs have been monitoring the situation of the Norweigan; Fulham have reportedly entered talks for him, whilst Liverpool are among the other Premier League clubs interested.

Jurgen Klopp has likely identified that Berge would be an excellent option to begin Liverpool’s rebuild in midfield, as he already has experience in the Premier League.

Sheffield United manager on Berge’s absence

The 25-year-old has seemingly expressed his desire to leave Bramall Lane this transfer window. Heckingbottom was questioned on Berge’s absence and told Daily Mail: “He’s not here because we have been asked not to use him. Our club is speaking to other clubs regarding him. It’s a club decision to protect that asset. I am not going to say I agree with it, but I understand it. He wanted to play today.”

He also touched on United’s ongoing issues regarding a transfer embargo, saying: “One way to resolve the issues is to sell a player.”

The match referee in yesterday’s FA Cup clash confused fans after he brandished a circular red card.

It was shown to Sheffield United’s Daniel Jebbison in the 71st minute after he committed violent conduct during the fourth-round clash with Wrexham AFC at The Racecourse Ground.

The highly-anticipated clash was emphatic from start to finish, with the opening goal coming in the second minute and the final goal in the fifth minute of injury time. It ended 3-3 between the in-form Championship side and National League high-flyers.

Why was the red card circular?

The circular card was later flashed to Jebbison for an off-the-ball incident. There was no VAR in the stadium, so supporters were bewildered at the incident that led to the sending-off.

Match referee Dean Whitestone pulled out an oval-shaped card and it was later confirmed why – it helps “assist” players who cannot differentiate between the two colours, and helped Whitestone distinguish which card he was about to show.

Liverpool have been granted a lucrative opportunity to start solving their midfield woes with the addition of a Premier League experienced midfielder.

Sander Berge of Sheffield United has reportedly become a transfer target for Jurgen Klopp, according to French outlet Jeunes Footeux, and the player could be open to making the switch.

Previously, the Norweigan expressed his desire to play at Anfield in an interview with TV2, saying: “Playing at Anfield is a dream for everyone in the world, and not least for Norwegians. Liverpool are the best team and have the most fans, so I could certainly like to play at Anfield as often as possible.”

Now, the Blades have been hit with a January transfer embargo due to issues surrounding their payments to another club. Yorkshire Live has suggested that the Championship side’s financial concerns could only be fixed if they achieve promotion to the top flight again at the end of the season, outside investment or overseeing players’ exits.

Liverpool could table bid for Berge

United will know that Berge is one player that they can sell for a considerable fee given his quality and experience at only 24. With the Merseyside club desperate to bolster their options in the middle of the pitch, Klopp may test the waters with a January bid.

Sheffield United favourite Billy Sharp has issued a statement after he was attacked on Tuesday night.

Sharp was the victim of a ruthless attack from a Nottingham Forest fan after Tuesday’s playoff semi-final at the City Ground.

Sheffield United came back from two goals down to level the tie, but they went on to lose on penalties, with three penalties missed.

After the game, Forest fans rushed the pitch, as is tradition in play-off semi-final second legs at this point, and the vast majority did so in good spirits to celebrate their side’s success.

Sharp did not feature in the clash, but he was stood on the sidelines as the penalties drew to a close.

And after the game, one Forest fan decided to headbutt Sharp ruthlessly, with the Sheffield United star looking the other way.

Thankfully, Sharp is okay, and he has now issued a statement, describing the perpetrator as a ‘mindless idiot’, while also taking time to congratulate Nottingham Forest for reaching the Wembley final.

Euphoric celebrations accompanied Nottingham Forest’s dramatic progress to the Championship Play-Off final, but they were soured by a vicious assault. Following the victory, stewards were powerless to stop the pitch invasion and one fan used it to headbutt Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp.

Sharp was looking on with sadness after the defeated on penalties by Nottingham Forest, following a heroic three penalty saves from Brice Samba. As is becoming increasingly common, the Forest fans took to the pitch in their delight mobbing many of the players.

One fans was caught on camera making taking a considerable run up and headbutting the unsuspecting Sharp, knocking him over entirely.

The incident didn’t take long to go viral and gain the condemnation of the Twitter-verse. Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom also came out and condemned the actions, claiming that “it’ll be dealt with.”

It’s worth wondering what wider effects this could have on security at football matches. Generally it appears there has been an upturn in the frequency of pitch invasions and while this on the whole is an expression of joy, if the safety of players and staff is put in jeopardy, it won’t take long for the authorities to come down with harsher restrictions.

Football is a game of emotions and on a Tuesday night in Nottingham, plenty of them were flying around the City Ground. After their Championship play-off semi-final went to penalties, Brice Samba stopped three Sheffield United penalties to help see them through to the final.

Nottingham Forest had won the first leg 2-1 and looked to be cruising into the final after Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the nineteenth minute. However the response from Sheffield United was good and they managed to stage a second half comeback through Morgan Gibbs-White and John Fleck. There was nothing to separate the two in extra time, but Brice Samba proved to be just that in the penalty shoot-out.

Samba was the hero, his three saves meaning Forest went through 3-2 with a penalty to spare. He, like everyone else on the pitch, was mobbed by the fans immediately after.

Forest go on to play Huddersfield Town in the final on Sunday, with a shot at making it to the Premier League for the first time since 1999. Having taken over the team in the relegation zone, manager Steve Cooper is surely making a case for the story of the season if they make it.
