Norwich City defender Shane Duffy has found himself in hot water just days before the club’s crucial promotion playoff match after being arrested and charged for drink driving.

According to BBC, the incident occurred on Monday night when Duffy was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Queen’s Road, Hethersett.

Following the crash, the Irish defender was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and subsequently taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of the collision, but the legal ramifications for Duffy are significant. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 2nd to face the charges brought against him.

Norwich City says club are internally considering the matter

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Norwich City Football Club issued a statement, acknowledging the situation and stating that the club is handling the matter internally in accordance with its disciplinary procedures.

The spokesperson said (via BBC):

“Norwich City Football Club is aware of an incident involving one of its first-team players.

“The club is in the process of considering the matter internally in accordance with its own disciplinary procedure.”

Shane Duffy’s arrest comes at a crucial time for Norwich City

Duffy’s arrest comes at a crucial time for Norwich City as they prepare for their promotion playoff against Leeds United.

The defender has been a key figure for the Canaries throughout the season, and his availability for the playoff matches is now uncertain.

The first leg of the playoff is set to take place on Sunday, and whether Duffy’s involvement will be affected remains to be seen. However, if he is unable to play, it would undoubtedly be a significant blow for manager David Wagner’s side as they seek promotion to the Premier League.

On loan centre back, Shane Duffy looks set to see out the rest of the season at Celtic Park.

The Irish international joined his boyhood heroes in the summer but that dream move has since become a nightmare after a series of dismal errors has seen him fall down the pecking order at the Glasgow giants.

The Celtic Star reported that Duffy, whose parent club is Brighton & Hove Albion, could move to Nottingham Forest after Chris Hughton was thought to have approached the Premier League club over signing the player. However, there have been developments since that story broke this morning, and it now looks be untrue.

Sky Sports journalist and avid follower of Scottish football, Anthony Joseph has revealed that Celtic expect to keep Duffy until the end of season, whilst Nottingham Forest are not thought to be in the market for a central defender during this window.

The Hoops will be looking to secure a centre back themselves as Christopher Jullien has been ruled out for up to four months with a knee ligament injury. The Scottish club made a loan move for Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic last week, but the Croatian decided to join The Foxes sister club OH Leuven instead.

According to Sky Sports journalist, Anthony Joseph, Leicester City have entered into talks with Celtic over the loan transfer of The Foxes centre back Filip Benkovic.

Benkovic enjoyed a spell on loan at the Glasgow club, who were ironically managed by Leicester’s boss Brendan Rodgers at that time.

The Croatian is not part of Leicester’s short term plans and was recently recalled from a loan spell at Cardiff City, where he made just one appearance since the start of the season. The club are understood to be happy to loan the players out, with Brendan Rodgers telling Sky Sports that another spell at Celtic would be good for him. It is thought that Leicester may even be open to selling the player permanently, though such a deal would likely be part of a loan to buy offer, so that Celtic can assess Benkovic’s fitness before committing. Indeed, the only downside to the defender’s time at Celtic Park a few years ago was the number of injuries that he picked up.

Celtic are currently desperate for a centre back with Christopher Jullien being ruled out with a long term knee injury, whilst loanee Shane Duffy has been a disaster since temporarily joining from Brighton.

Cardiff City have confirmed that Brendan Rodgers has recalled Filip Benkovic. The Leicester City manager has been concerned about the lack of football that Benkovic has had during this latest loan spell, his third since signing for the Premiership side.

Ironically the only successful spell for Benkovic came under Rodgers while at Celtic, but it appears that the Croatian central defender is not in the Irishman’s plans at Leicester and is available for a transfer during this window.

Cardiff City confirmed the situation on social media:

One rumour gaining traction is that Celtic could make a move for the player. Neil Lennon will be looking to strengthen in the central defensive area given that Christopher Jullien suffered a long-term injury, whilst the abysmal form of Irish captain Shane Duffy has left many scratching their heads over his loan deal at the Hoops.

Benkovic had a successful spell at Celtic Park and would be a popular choice with fans. Rodgers knows that a loan deal would get the player game time, whilst the Croatian international himself will have familiarity with the club.

A quartet of Brighton players reportedly face a club probe after a video emerged of them inhaling balloons in Spain while on their winter break.

Much like a number of other Premier League clubs, the Brighton squad have headed off to warmer climates this week with the break in the fixture list.

However, it seems as though a few of the club’s stars could be in hot water as The Sun report that Pascal Gross, Shane Duffy, Leandro Trossard and Alireza Jahanbakhsh could all be facing an internal investigation after being spotted inhaling a balloon in Spain.

“The club is aware of the video circulating on social media. This matter is being dealt with internally,” a club spokesman is quoted as saying.

It’s noted in the report above that the contents of the balloon are unknown at this stage and so that is where the investigation will no doubt uncover the details, but they have been known to contain nitrous oxide, otherwise referred to as laughing gas, in previous cases.

It’s an unwanted distraction for the club given that they’re still involved in a relegation battle this season, as they sit just three points above the bottom three with 12 games to play. In turn, time will tell how they deal with this situation.

A fair few Liverpool fans seemed to really enjoy this moment from Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum towards the end of the 1-0 win over Brighton.

Mohamed Salah’s goal settled a tense affair and sent LFC seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, but this was, on the whole, far from a classic.

Wijnaldum, however, produced a comedy moment as he confronted Brighton’s Shane Duffy over his complaint about a handball decision.

The Dutchman simply reminded Duffy where his arm is, backing up the referee’s decision.

Simple, but fine work from Gini!

Irish excitement ahead of Euro 2016 dipped on Tuesday night as Martin O’Neill’s men were humbled at home by Belarus.

The Republic went down 2-1 at Turner’s Cross as Cork staged a forgettable farewell party for the Boys in Green.

Belarus defied their FIFA World Ranking of 77 by taking the lead after just 21 minutes when Mikhail Hardzeichuk picked out the top corner with a fine effort from long range.

Hardzeichuk’s opener came from his side’s third shot of the game. They would only register eight attempts all night, half as many as Ireland.

Ireland also had the lion’s share of possession, but their statistical dominance counted for very little and Belarus – four days on from a 3-0 defeat to Northern Ireland – were 2-0 up just after the hour mark.

Maksim Volodko was the scorer and he deserves plenty of credit for a fine run which embarrassed Cyrus Christie. However, his finish was very lucky, with a bit deflection beating Shay Given.

Ireland looked shocked. Belarus had not scored a goal in their previous four internationals and yet here they were with a commanding lead.

O’Neill’s men did fight back, but this 71st-minute consolation goal from Stephen Ward was as good as it got.

After the final whistle, O’Neill named his final 23-man Ireland squad for Euro 2016.

Christie was perhaps a little lucky to survive the cull, considering how easily he was beaten for the second Belarus goal.

Meanwhile, Aiden McGeady’s inclusion also seems rather fortunate as he has barely played in recent weeks, with Sheffield Wednesday ending his loan spell and sending him back to Everton before the Championship play-offs.

SQUAD IN FULL:

Darren Randolph, Shay Given, Keiren Westwood.

Seamus Coleman, Cyrus Christie, John O’Shea, Ciaran Clark, Shane Duffy, Richard Keogh, Robbie Brady, Stephen Ward.

Glenn Whelan, James McCarthy, Jeff Hendrick, Wes Hoolahan, James McClean, Aiden McGeady, Stephen Quinn, David Meyler.

Shane Long, Jon Walters, Daryl Murphy, Robbie Keane.
