Erik ten Hag may not have been sacked just yet, but there’s plenty of speculation that he won’t last much longer at Manchester United and there’s already talk about who could be the next Man United manager.

Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Red Devils several times in the past and is now available again after leaving his position at Chelsea at the end of the season just gone.

Enzo Maresca is about to replace Pochettino at Chelsea, and it could be that the Argentine will find himself back in work again quickly due to the opening at Man Utd.

See below for the latest odds on the United job, with other big names in there, such as Thomas Tuchel and former midfield player Michael Carrick an outsider…

Next Man United Manager Odds (Ladbrokes)
Mauricio Pochettino – 7/4
Kieran McKenna – 2/1
Thomas Tuchel – 5/1
Roberto De Zerbi – 7/1
Gareth Southgate – 10/1
Thomas Frank – 14/1
Ruben Amorim – 16/1
Zinedine Zidane – 20/1
Michael Carrick – 33/1

United fans will surely have mixed opinions about the prospect of replacing Ten Hag after his success in the FA Cup final, but there is perhaps arguably not a clear outstanding candidate out there to replace the Dutch tactician anyway.

A 4-3 win over Middlesbrough when the pressure was really on has arguably been one of Leeds United’s best results of the season.

Daniel Farke’s side knew that they needed to win at the Riverside Stadium and will almost certainly have to do so in their final two games of the Championship season against Queen’s Park Rangers and Southampton if they’re to stand any chance of going up automatically.

At present, the all whites find themselves in the second automatic promotion spot behind leaders Leicester City.

On 90 points, they’re four behind the Foxes and one ahead of Ipswich Town who, crucially, have a game in hand.

Georginio Rutter has to cut out mistakes says Leeds legend Dorigo

The Portman Road-based team have Hull City, Coventry and Huddersfield to play, and they too are likely to need to win all their matches to give them any chance of going up without needing to go through the lottery of the play-offs.

Each of the teams vying for promotion needs all of their players to be right at it for the remainder of the season, but former Leeds great, Tony Dorigo, hasn’t been impressed by Georginio Rutter of late.

Leeds ace Georginio Rutter has been criticised by Tony Dorigo
Georginio Rutter of Leeds United

“Georgi in these positions, got to do better – got to do better,” he said on commentary for LUTV during the game against Middlesbrough, and when the hosts had taken full advantage of Rutter’s error.

“He’s got away with losing the ball in bad positions before but not this time. Meslier should save that.”

He’s unlikely to be dropped for the remainder of the campaign, but Farke himself might be looking at Rutter’s penchant to be consistently making the same mistake and, at the very least, have a word with him.

The all whites simply can’t afford any more mistakes between now and the final whistle of their match against Southampton.

They’ll still be relying on Kieran McKenna’s side to slip up, but if they’ve not managed to do the business themselves, Leeds will have no one else to blame.

The 2023/24 Championship season is shaping up nicely for Leeds United, with Daniel Farke’s side seemingly timing their run to the top of the table just right.

Currently in second place, the all whites are now only three points behind Leicester City, who at one stage of the campaign were a gargantuan 11 points ahead of them.

Whether the German will manage to get his side promoted automatically or through the Play-Offs will only be seen later in the campaign, and a promotion will largely dictate the club’s transfer policy.

Middlesbrough could sign Luke Ayling permanently

One player that could conceivably be considered an Elland Road legend is Luke Ayling, who signed for Championship rivals Middlesbrough on loan earlier in the season.

He’d surely be desperate to pit his wits against the Premier League’s best, but it seems that a more permanent stay on Teeside could be on the cards.

Luke Ayling could join Middlesbrough permanently

“You’re always playing for something and as it stands at the moment that’s obviously what’s next,” Boro manager, Michael Carrick, was quoted as saying by Teeside Live.

“Looking at him, that’s not at the forefront of his mind at all. He’s all in, he’s desperate to do well and win games for us. We’ll see. That will play out how it’s going to play out over the next few months.”

At 32 years of age, Ayling is getting no younger, and there’s no room for passengers nowadays in the English top-flight, as the likes of last season’s promoted clubs – Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley – are all finding out this year.

Football journalist Graeme Bailey claims that West Ham have “bigger targets” and Michael Carrick is not in the running to succeed David Moyes as manager of the team.

According to the HITC journalist, who spoke with Boro News, the former Irons midfielder is content where he is at Middlesbrough and is probably planning a new contract at the Riverside rather than leaving for the London Stadium come in the summer.

Bailey claims that frequent connections to Carrick are unfounded and that bigger names are being considered in place of Moyes, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season with an extension now on hold.

Bailey said: “He’s happy here [Middlesbrough]. I don’t think particularly he’s on anyone’s list at the moment; he’s always linked to West Ham but my understanding is West Ham have got some bigger targets to replace Moyes at the moment.

“I think that’ll get done [new Middlesbrough contract for Carrick] before the start of next season.”

Carrick has a history with the team and even played in the league before his 2004 departure for Tottenham, but he is not likely to be a good fit as the next manager at this time.

Although he has led Middlesbrough to a semi-final in the Championship play-offs last season and a semifinal in the League Cup this one, Carrick has enjoyed a reasonably successful tenure there.

However, should Moyes leave this summer, the Irons will probably require a more seasoned coach than the 42-year-old, who is currently ranked 11th in the second division and has only managed two seasons.

There’s still no certainty that a management change will occur at all since David Sullivan and the West Ham board haven’t seemed to be able to decide on a clear plan of action for more than a year.

Whether West Ham don’t renew David Moyes’ contract or not, the East Londoners clearly need to beef up their current defensive set-up.

As was seen with Kurt Zouma losing his marker for the only goal against Freiburg in their Europa League clash on Thursday, there needs to be competition for places.

One player that’s making a name for himself in the Championship is Middlesbrough’s highly-rated 19-year-old, Rav van den Berg.

Boro are managed by West Ham old boy, Michael Carrick, and given that the North East giants are 10 points outside of the play-off places at present, if they’re unable to at least give themselves a shot at promotion to the Premier League, Boro could find it difficult to keep hold of their best players.

West Ham looking at Rav van den Berg

““Everton, West Ham, Brighton and Crystal Palace are amongst the Premier League clubs interested in making a move for Middlesbrough defender Rav van den Berg,” ex-professional, Carlton Palmer, told Football League World.

“[…] It has been disappointing for Middlesbrough this season because they wanted to push for the Premier League, but they were not able to bring in the players in the summer or in January to help them push on. So, it has been a disappointing season for Middlesbrough.

“But he has been one of the bright sparks in the team. He has caught the eye of a lot of Premier League teams. Middlesbrough will not want to lose him at the end of the season given the situation. If they do not get to the Premier League, will they be able to keep him?

West Ham are chasing Middlesbrough's Rav van den Berg

Ultimately, if van den Berg is to move on, the club are likely to accept the offer from the highest bidder.

However, Carrick’s ties to the East London outfit could give them the edge in any negotiations if he accepts that the player will leave.

From West Ham’s own point of view, their squad has been the strongest it has for some while, but the depth is missing.

If they truly want to go to the next level under Moyes or whomever, then hoovering up young talent such as van den Berg is a must.

West Ham United are reportedly keeping tabs on the Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick as a potential replacement for David Moyes.

The Scottish manager is nearing the end of his current contract and the Hammers are yet to offer him an extension. It seems that his future is uncertain at the London club as per reports.

The Hammers have done reasonably well under him and they are currently seventh in the league table.  Moyes managed to help his side win the UEFA Europa Conference League last year as well. It was expected that he would be offered a new deal this season.

Things have clearly not gone according to plan and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops.

Meanwhile, Carrick has done an impressive job at the Championship club and he could prove to be a quality appointment. The former Manchester United midfielder will certainly be attracted to the idea of managing a Premier League club if the opportunity arises.

West Ham manager David Moyes could leave the club at the end of the season as his job comes under scrutiny yet again.

Moyes has done a reasonably good job for the Hammers. They are currently seventh in the Premier League, going well in the Europa League and won a European trophy last season.

A short while ago, there were rumours that the team was prepared to extend Moyes’ contract, which would remove any doubt.

But a recent SportLens article claims that West Ham are suddenly more hesitant.

They are postponing contract negotiations in order to see if the recent setbacks can be followed by some wins.

The Hammers have now looked at two names as possible Moyes replacements, according to the story in SportLens.

Although there haven’t been any discussions yet, Middlesborough’s Michael Carrick and Lille’s Paulo Fonseca are under consideration. Carrick is a more recent addition to the European scene than Fonseca, who has long been a respected figure.

The former West Ham, Tottenham and Man United midfielder has made a name for himself after the impressive work he has done for the Championship club. Carrick’s Middlesbrough managed to reach the Carabao Cup semifinals this season, only to be beaten by Chelsea.

And although there are West Ham supporters who would be sad to see Moyes go, Carrick would be a wise choice for any Premier League team.

Moyes’ position is currently under scrutiny which is harsh on the Scottish manager considering the work he has done at the club.

It is emphasised in the report that the pressure is related to the possibility of a new contract rather than the possibility of being fired, yet the conversation still feels unjust.

Crystal Palace have reportedly approached Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick as a potential candidate to become their manager.

The Eagles first had contact with Carrick last season after parting ways with Patrick Vieira, before Roy Hodgson ended up coming back for a second spell at Selhurst Park.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder has done a hugely impressive job at Middlesbrough, and it’s long been felt that he would soon be snapped up by a Premier League club.

With Palace now thinking about long-term successors for Hodgson, it seems Carrick’s name is coming up again, along with Vincent Kompany at Burnley, and recently-sacked Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

Tuesday night provided a glimpse into what one Tottenham and Man City target could do against Premier League opposition.

Middlesbrough’s 21-year-old defensive midfielder, Hayden Hackney, was the match winner in the first leg of the Carabao Cup against Chelsea, and his all-action display meant that the likes of £100m+ players, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, were in his shadow.

England U21 ace Hackney has garnered a deserved reputation with a series of high quality displays in the north east, and as The Standard note, Man United and Liverpool are also keeping tabs.

The outlet also suggest that Middlesbrough are accepting of the fact that the player will leave the club, and expect offers to come flooding in during the summer.

There is a chance he could be sold in the current transfer window, but only a sensational offer would see that scenario occur.

Given just how well he performed on Tuesday, he may well have given a few sporting directors and Premier League managers some food for thought.

There’s an obvious question as to whether interested parties can afford to wait until the next transfer window and then get involved in what’s likely to be a bun fight for the player’s services.

Although David Moyes would only appear to have a few months left on his West Ham contract, it seems that the Scot still wants to be the author of the Hammers January transfer spend.

The club haven’t yet approached their manager to offer him new terms, which would see his contract – that currently ends on June 30, 2024, extended.

To that end, it would seem an odd decision to let Moyes take control of what would effectively be his last transfer window in charge of the club, given that any potential new incumbent may not wish to utilise many of the same members of the playing staff.

Certainly, if the east Londoners want to take things to the next level, then they should be shopping in a different market place than the English championship, with respect, though the club’s modus operandi has always seemed to be buying cheap in the hope that they’ll hit the jackpot with a player.

There’s been a long line of failures in that regard and one or two hits, and if they’re able to beat Wayne Rooney’s Birmingham City to the signature of Derby County’s highly-rated 22-year-old, Eiran Cashin, time will tell if they were wise to go after the player in the first instance.

TeamTalk also credit Middlesbrough, Burnley, Sheffield United and Brighton with an interest, so any potential hire by the Hammers is far from a foregone conclusion at this stage in any event.
