Leeds United will look to part ways with Patrick Bamford at the end of the season as the Yorkshire club don’t see the 30-year-old as part of their future.

Daniel Farke’s side are on the verge of a return to the Premier League having reached the Championship play-off final this week but they will need to sell players if they fail to secure promotion.

According to the Daily Mail, if Leeds don’t get promoted this season the Championship club will have to raise close to £100m in player sales and that could lead to a firesale at Elland Road with stars such as Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville almost certain to leave amid interest from the Premier League.

Fans of the Yorkshire club will hope that scenario doesn’t play out but even if they do return to England’s top flight, the Whites will look to part ways with Patrick Bamford as the striker doesn’t have a big part in their future plans.

Patrick Bamford and Leeds look set to part ways after six years

This season has been tough for Bamford as the 30-year-old has missed a lot of games through injury, which includes the entire start of the campaign.

The striker has a contract at Elland Road until 2026 but the Daily Mail states that Leeds would like to move on from the player this summer. The former Chelsea star is the joint-highest earner at the Championship club with his £70,000 a week contract and that is a lot of money to get off the books.

Bamford has been at Leeds since 2018 and the play-off final could be a fitting way for him to leave having played 187 games in a white shirt.

Leeds United travel to the Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough on Monday and Patrick Bamford is expected to start up top for Daniel Farke’s side.

The Yorkshire club go into the game having had a nice nine-day break since the disappointment of losing their unbeaten home record to Blackburn Rovers. Promotion rivals Leicester and Southampton will have played before the Whites kick-off but they know that they have to win their remaining fixtures to return to the Premier League.

For the Blackburn match, Joel Piroe was one of the three changes Farke made as he came in to start up front in place of Patrick Bamford, who has seen his form dip recently.

The striker role has been an area of debate this season at Leeds, with calls growing for Mateo Joseph to be handed his first league start for the Championship side but Farke has continued to resist the temptation to do so.

Speaking on the Square Ball Podcast, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay believes that 30-year-old Bamford will get the nod on Monday to face his former side Middlesbrough.

“It is sometimes the sort of environment he really likes. I cannot see Farke going with the system he did against Blackburn with Piroe up front, it just didn’t really work and it didn’t bring much out of Piroe,” Hay said.

“On the basis of what we’ve seen from Farke you would assume Bamford comes in and plays that role. I would be tempted to try Joseph but I do get it is a gamble and it is very easy to make suggestions of changes which then don’t get tested.

“For as long as Joseph isn’t starting, it’s easy to say to play him and he will score goals. If you play him and he doesn’t score goals, there are consequences of that. You have to get that decision right.”

The current season is in its most crucial stage and things are starting to heat up around the world as teams push for trophies but at Leeds, the temperature has also been turned up between players.

The Yorkshire club are currently pushing for a return to the Premier League and the pressure is undoubtedly high at Elland Road. Daniel Farke’s team were beaten 1-0 by Blackburn Rovers last weekend and two members of his squad were involved in a disagreement during the warm-up for the match.

The number nine position at Leeds has been highly contested this season with nobody being able to hold down the role.

Georginio Rutter spent the first half of the campaign playing there with Piroe in behind, while Patrick Bamford has since come in to take the latter’s place at the turn of the New Year.

There have been shouts from fans to start Mateo Joseph in the role and last weekend there was a disagreement between the youngster and Bamford as neither started against Blackburn.

According to Phil Hay on the latest episode of the Square Ball Podcast, the two players were involved in a heated disagreement and the journalist has claimed it took intervention from a few teammates to calm Joseph down, with The Athletic reporter potentially hinting at a bit of frustration from both at not being picked.

“We were watching this before the game. There was a really interesting thing going on between Bamford and Joseph before the game on Saturday, bearing in mind neither were in the starting line-up and both in the group of subs,” Hay said.

“In the warm-up, Leeds do a rondo, where someone is in the middle and you pass the ball about. If the guy in the middle intercepts it, whoever passes the ball swaps over with them. And there was a proper little set-two between Bamford and Joseph, a real disagreement about who was supposed to go in.

“This happens quite a lot where you see players argue with each other, but it’s usually light-hearted. Without being totally over-blown, this was more serious and more to it. It took Cooper, Kamara and Dan James to intervene and calm Joseph down.

“He was not having it. You try to look into this, and I wonder whether Joseph was unhappy about not being picked. Was Bamford a little bit niggly? The number nine position just isn’t settled at the minute.”

Patrick Bamford has revealed he had a major bust-up with one teammate before the pair became best friends.

Speaking in a recent interview about a clash that happened, Bamford admitted that during his second season at Elland Road, he was involved in a heated argument with Stuart Dallas.

“There’s never been punches and stuff thrown,” the striker said.

“Weirdly, I like to think of myself as a calm guy, but I’ve been involved in a few.

One of them was at Leeds, the first or second year I was there, me and Stuart Dallas had an argument, but it was like the heat of the moment after a game in the changing room, but we rang each other on the way home and we were absolutely fine, now he’s one of my best mates.

“Me and Stu aren’t aggressive people, so it was easy to patch it up, but after that we were probably closer.”

Former Leicester City defender Matt Elliott has admitted he started to worry when Leeds United made some second-half changes during the Whites’ 3-1 Championship win at Elland Road last week.

Despite taking the game’s lead early on thanks to a strike from Wout Faes, Leicester City were pegged back late in the second half before eventually going on to lose by two clear goals.

Strikes from Connor Roberts, Archie Gray and Patrick Bamford sealed the tie and ensured all the points would be staying in Yorkshire.

And Elliott believes Daniel Farke’s tactical changes were vital to the home team securing victory — particularly Bamford, who came on in place of Joel Piroe with 25 minutes left to play.

Speaking on Extra-Time, Matt Elliott said: “You’re looking at substitutions, it’s quite an interesting one really, I certainly had that feel, Bamford, certainly at this level, when Bamford’s on the pitch, something’s likely to happen.

“He’s more than a decent striker in this division. And there was a little bit of, ‘oh, this could be a bit of bother for Leicester’, because they hadn’t extended their lead and it was still so tight.”

As Leeds head into the final few months of the 2023/24 season looking to earn themselves an automatic promotion spot, striker Patrick Bamford has detailed how things have changed in the dressing room of late.

The all whites are doing well under Daniel Farke, and could see themselves into second spot on Friday night with a victory over Bristol City.

Though the teams directly below them would then have two games in hand, they still need to be won, and even if it’s just a temporary move up the table it will at least have given the Leeds players a fillip at this point of the campaign.

One player that won’t play any part in their run in and who was evidently unable to impress Farke enough to ensure a regular spot in his side was Leeds stalwart, Luke Ayling.

After having been at the club for eight years, a switch to Middlesbrough was always going to feel odd to the players, such as Bamford, that have been his team-mate for the last few years.

“It’s strange, different because you didn’t have Bill doing his normal geeing players up before a game,” the striker said on the My Mate’s a Footballer podcast.

“When we go out, it’s fine. The person who is loud in the changing room, is not necessarily the captain.”

Farke is hardly likely to let Ayling’s departure put a dampener on the dressing room, however, and full focus now has to be on what’s to come rather than what’s gone before.

Dan James showcased excellent form during Leeds United’s impressive 3-0 victory over Birmingham City on Monday. Daniel Farke introduced a new-look front four for the match, contributing to their success.

Impressively, the 26-year-old James increased his season’s goal involvements to 13 on Monday as Leeds secured a convincing win against the Blues. He notched a goal and provided an assist, delivering the cross that led to Patrick Bamford opening the scoring.

Following a precise cut-back from Junior Firpo, Wales star Dan James scored with a slight deflection. Firpo replicated this assist for Crysencio Summerville, extending Leeds United’s lead to 3-0. These impactful moments followed strategic changes made by manager Daniel Farke.

Joel Piroe was benched for the £10 million man, Bamford, who hadn’t scored or started this season for Leeds. Bamford’s last goal dates back to the 4-1 defeat against Bournemouth, a match that led to Javi Gracia being sacked by Leeds.

In a post-match interview with LUTV after Monday’s 3-0 win, when asked by Michael Bridges if playing with Bamford helped him, James confirmed and mentioned that Bamford is consistently urging and supporting him on the field.

“I like to cross the ball. Pat is always going to make the run. He always tell me, he’s very clever with it,” James stated. “And he always stretches the game. Makes it hard even when teams are playing five at the back, he stretches them, gives space to the 10’s.”

Dan James is not alone in praising Bamford; Wayne Rooney commended his predatory instinct around the six-yard box, and Daniel Farke noted that Bamford has regained his trust. Positive sentiments from both teammates and the coaching staff reflect Bamford’s impact against struggling Birmingham City.

BBC pundit Jon Newsome has voiced his frustration over Leeds United’s persistent tendency to pass ‘sidewards and backwards’ during their recent match against West Brom.

The team experienced back-to-back defeats, with the latest being a 2-1 loss at Preston North End on Boxing Day, marking the first instance of consecutive defeats under manager Daniel Farke.

Leeds’ 2-1 defeat at Preston North End marked their sixth away loss this season, characterized by a recurring challenge of breaking down defensively oriented opponents due to a perceived lack of urgency in the final third. In response to a lackluster display, manager Daniel Farke made a triple substitution around the hour mark, including the introduction of Patrick Bamford.

Jon Newsome, commenting on the BBC Radio Leeds post-match show, expressed that Patrick Bamford stood out as the only player attempting something different by making runs in behind the opposition. However, Newsome noted a pattern where Bamford’s efforts were consistently overlooked or ignored by his teammates during the match.

“Bamford must’ve made 25 runs in that second half that no one even looked at. A number of times he was curving, running across the line and wanting to dive in, then when he was caught offside he was saying quicker.”

Patrick Bamford faced being caught offside a couple of times when his runs were eventually picked out by Gruev, but there’s a suggestion that part of the blame lies in the delay it took to locate him. In away matches, Joel Piroe has shown recent inefficiency, with his last goal on the road dating back to September against Millwall. Perhaps Farke would be better suited to giving Bamford more game time.

Leeds United could offer three of their most senior and experienced players new contracts before the end of the season.

That is the view of transfer journalist Dean Jones, who believes Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford and Liam Cooper could all be in line for new deals, despite none of the trio playing as regularly as they would have hoped this season.

“I think it’s important that you have the experience of players like Cooper, Ayling and Bamford around the place, but of course, you want a freshness to come into the squad as well,” Jones told GiveMeSport.

“You want a new generation of Leeds that you can identify with. They’ve been fantastic servants, particularly Cooper and Ayling, in terms of what they have bought, even recently to the club, and have been good in the Premier League.

“I still think that those guys will be around beyond this season. Both have the potential to sign new contracts in the new year. So, I can see why they’ll still be hanging around. I think that that depth is going to be important, and the mix of experience, as well as current quality, is going to be key to helping Leeds get over the line.”

Leeds currently sit third in the Championship table, seven points off the automatic promotion spots, and knowing how important it will be to the club to return to the Premier League as quickly as possible, having some of his most trusted and experienced players commit their futures to the club will be important for manager Daniel Farke.
