Newcastle United are prepared to make an offer worth €80m for Real Madrid youngster Arda Guler if the Spanish champions put him up for sale according to reports in Spain.

It’s been a fairly quiet transfer window for the Magpies so far with the only arrivals being Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, whilst Lewis Hall’s loan move from Chelsea has been made permanent.

Eddie Howe’s men will need further reinforcements though if they are going to get back into European football next season.

Newcastle make Guler bid

The Magpies are yet to make a marquee signing and have been linked with a move for a right winger with the future of Miguel Almiron up in the air.

The likes of Noni Madueke and Jarrod Bowen have been discussed as possible options although deals for either are viewed as very unlikely.

However, a marquee signing might not be far away and Spanish outlet Defensa Central have reported that Newcastle are prepared to make an offer worth €80m for Turkish talent Guler if Madrid put him up for sale.

Arda Guler in action for Real Madrid.
Guler impressed for Turkey at Euro 2024 and is set for a more prominent role at Madrid next season.

Guler joined the Spanish giants last summer from Fenerbahce, who are now managed by former Madrid boss Jose Mourinho for around €20m.

The 19-year-old has had to be patient in his first season in the Spanish capital and scored an impressive six goals in just12 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit.

Guler missed large parts of the season through injury and having impressed for Turkey at Euro 2024 he will be hoping to put his injury issues behind him heading into the new season.

Defensa central added that Los Blancos are big believers in Guler’s talent and if he remains at the club he’s set to be handed a more important role by Carlo Ancelotti in the new campaign.

Any move for Guler would see the Magpies break their club record which currently stands at the £63m they paid Real Sociedad for Alexander Isak.

Whilst a move for Guler would appear very unlikely, it’s clear what profile of player Howe is looking to add his squad and it will be interesting to see what moves Newcastle make in the market as the start of the season and the end of transfer window draw closer.

Inside Spain is a weekly instalment brought to you by Football España, providing an insight into all of the major stories coming out of the rich and intense climes of La Liga and beyond.

It’s been a big week at Real Madrid, which is saying something, given it should have been all about Spain’s Euro 2024 celebrations. Celebrations that weren’t all smooth.

Manchester City’s Rodri Hernandez has caused a minor diplomatic incident after his ‘Gibraltar is Spanish chant’, with Chief Minister Fabian Picardo comparing it to the sort of stunt Dictator Francisco Franco would pull. Mikel Oyarzabal and Mikel Merino were branded ‘traitors’ by someone in their hometowns with particularly strong Basque feeling, and Dani Carvajal went viral for giving Spanish President Pedro Sanchez the cold shoulder. Perhaps the most wild was seeing Alvaro Morata launch a cup at a fan from their open-top bus due to a sign they were holding.

Apartt from that, it was mostly wholesome, with Marc Cucurella, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams providing the good vibes. It has not calmed speculation around Williams though. This week Barcelona met with his agent to finalise personal terms, but Athletic Club coach Ernesto Valverde declared he was expecting him back in training on the 12th of August. Arsenal and Chelsea probably won’t drop out of the race until they know Barcelona have the money to do a deal. Barcelona also launched their new kit with a brilliant announcement video.

All that before even getting to Kylian Mbappe’s presentation. The Frenchman packed out the Santiago Bernabeu, with a rumoured 80,000 there to see him ‘accomplish his childhood dream’. A big Real Madrid love-in, one-year extensions for Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric almost faded into the background.

It did leave Real Madrid stunned when Leny Yoro called them to say that he would be joining Manchester United. The local press say that Lille threatened to send him to the stands if Yoro did not accept Manchester United’s offer, although with phrases like ‘Real Madrid overestimated his determination to play for them’, it read a little like saving face.

All the same, Real Madrid do not have a plan B. They let Rafa Marin join Napoli earlier this month, they were that certain of getting Yoro over the line, but now face either a scrambled effort for another defender, or using Aurelien Tchouameni there as an emergency option.

Finally, the 11 Spanish venues were confirmed for the 2030 World Cup, with no Mestalla in Valencia, or Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan or Benito Villamarin in Seville. Sevilla will have La Cartuja at least, but reportedly politics got in the way of Spain’s third-most populous city missing out entirely…

Inside Spain is a weekly instalment brought to you by Football España, providing an insight into all of the major stories coming out of the rich and intense climes of La Liga and beyond.

Spain have by most people’s estimates been the best side at Euro 2024, and their victory over France was met with the euphoria of genuine moment that will go down in history – Lamine Yamal’s golazo.

In Iberia, Spain are no doubt regarded as favourites, and while there is optimism, and a belief that La Roja are the better team, England’s knack for finding a way in extremis, and the underperforming quality in their ranks has brought with it a certain cautiousness ahead of Sunday. The good atmosphere around the Spain squad has been one of the most visible reasons to believe in their side though.

That atmosphere has been felt throughout Spain, but a little less in Bilbao. Although their players are a key reason for their success, the constant speculation surrounding Nico Williams, linked with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona, has rubbed Athletic Club up the wrong way. President Jon Uriarte criticised Barcelona counterpart Joan Laporta for publicly declaring an interest – Williams reportedly has agreed personal terms with the Blaugrana.

Arsenal intend to compete with Barcelona for Mikel Merino by all accounts too, but there Mikel Arteta may have more reason for optimism. Chelsea are also interested in Williams still, even if they are looking at alternatives, but they have given up on Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion, as per the latest in Spain.

Real Madrid can finally present Kylian Mbappe as their ultimate galactico signing on Tuesday at noon at the Santiago Bernabeu after France were knocked out – already there is a 4-6 week wait for ‘Mbappe 9’ shirts.

Their efforts are now focused on Leny Yoro, who they have agreed terms with. Manchester United are trying to persuade him to change his mind and head to Old Trafford though, and the fact that Los Blancos have identified an alternative to Yoro is perhaps a reason for a little optimism for Erik ten Hag.

Alvaro Morata’s future remains in the air with talk that he will U-turn on his decision to stay in Spain, and head to AC Milan. United’s Donny van de Beek has arrived in Girona to sign with the Champions League side. Finally, a warning to the England squad, just avoid the topic of Lamine Yamal in press conferences, Adrien Rabiot wasn’t even that critical of him, and it did not end well for him.

Inside Spain is a weekly instalment brought to you by Football España, providing an insight into all of the major stories coming out of the rich and intense climes of La Liga and beyond.

Euro 2024 has been a good time for Spain, with La Roja playing comfortably the best football at the tournament, and now arguably into the final four as favourites. An injury to Pedri was the main sour note from their win over Germany, but even then it was his replacement Dani Olmo who first scored and then provided the cross for Mikel Merino’s outstanding header.

The tournament has provided a useful barrier for many of the Spain players linked with a move, with Nico Williams, Olmo and Merino (and his father) all saying they will deal with transfers after the tournament – when they will also be exempt from media duties too. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta clearly still enjoys watching La Liga, as not only have Williams and Merino been linked to the Gunners, there’s also Jules Kounde and long-term target Martin Zubimendi.

There’s bad news on the latter front, as Zubimendi has, like last summer, reiterated his desire to stay at Real Sociedad. Kounde has also in recent months said he has no plans to leave Barcelona, but there is a steady stream of links to French defender, and if Barcelona cannot sell Ronald Araujo, then seemingly they would be open to letting Kounde go.

Benfica have been heavily linked to Joao Felix this week. Atletico Madrid would not only be delighted not to have to loan him back to Barcelona on a cheaper deal, and to move him permanently, but there has been no offer for Felix yet. It remains to be seen whether he would be open to an offer if one arrived. Chelsea appear to have re-opened talks for Samu Omorodion, but if Atletico demand his release clause, then it might be a little too much for the Blues.

Across the city, Real Madrid continue their waiting game for Leny Yoro, but another name familiar to Arsenal fans, Dani Ceballos, is looking to leave for more minutes. If Los Blancos are to let him go, they want a decent offer though, meaning the Premier League is his most likely destination.

West Ham have been linked with a number of players this summer, and the latest to be attributed to their shortlist is Villarreal’s Alexander Sorloth, who finished runner-up as top scorer in Spain last summer. It seems as if it will be a busy summer in Spain this year, but all eyes are on France on Tuesday for now, as Luis de la Fuente steps forward as an unlikely hero.

Germany fans were left in tears for more than one reason following their defeat to Spain on Friday in the quarter finals of Euro 2024.

The host nation looked like they were heading out after Dani Olmo had given Spain a second half lead, before Florian Wirtz sent the home fans mad as he fired home an 89th minute equaliser.

Both teams had opportunities in extra time, and the game seemed to be heading to penalties, but Mikel Merino brilliantly headed home Olmo’s cross in the 119th minute to break German hearts.

The home faithful were left in tears after the full time whistle, with the camera panning to a number of supporters crying in the stands with their dream of Euros glory over.

It wasn’t just the result that had fans crying, as defeat saw the curtain fall on amazing the career of Toni Kroos.

Kroos came out of international retirement for the tournament, and in emotional scenes at full time the midfielder could be seen applauding and waving at the fans as he left the pitch one final time.

It’s not the way he would have wanted things to end, but he’s had an incredible career and will go down as one of the greats of the game.

Roy Keane has warned England star Jude Bellingham to be careful following his celebration against Slovakia.

Bellingham, who has had a fairly quiet tournament by his standards grabbed the headlines with a superb bicycle kick against Slovakia to keep England in the Euros.

There were fears the 21-year-old might be suspended for the quarter final against Switzerland for a gesture he made in the aftermath of his goal, but he was handed a £25,000 fine and a suspended one match ban, meaning he’s clear to play on Saturday.

Keane sends warning to Bellingham

Bellingham shouted the words “who else” to the crowd when celebrating the equaliser, which was his second goal of the tournament.

Many enjoyed the Real Madrid mans celebration, but Keane didn’t see the positives to it and warned Bellingham he could be in danger of “making it all about him.”

Keane has warned Bellingham he’s walking a fine line with his celebrations.

“If you scored a big goal, to me that wouldn’t even cross your mind, you’d be with your team-mates,” he said on Stick to Football: The Overlap Special.

“Scoring goals is the best part of football but I just can’t imagine that you’d have something in your head to say, “Who else?” That’s the bit where I’d be going, “Hold on a second”, it’s a bit cocky and arrogant.

“Bellingham has to be careful with his celebration after scoring against Slovakia. You’re always walking a fine line, you don’t want it to seem like it’s all about you.”

Bellingham’s performances have come in for criticism as he has largely drifted through games so far, but he has that match winning quality and the ability to make something happen out of nothing, which is why you want him on the pitch.

England are expected to shake things up against Switzerland by switching to a back three due to the suspension of Marc Guehi, but Bellingham is expected to keep his place in the side for the quarter final.

Arda Guler and Marcel Sabitzer both came under attack during Turkey’s 2-1 win over Austria as poor behaviour from some fans threatened to spoil Tuesday’s Euro 2024 quarter-final.

Merih Demiral scored twice for Turkey, including once in the opening minute, before Michael Gregoritsch pulled a goal back for Austria to set up a tense finish.

Turkey goalkeeper Mert Gunok pulled off an unbelievable save in the 94th minute to deny Christoph Baumgartner, drawing comparisons to Gordon Banks.

Vincenzo Montella’s side held on to set up a quarter final against the Netherlands on Saturday evening.

Guler and Sabitzer targeted with objects from the crowd

Unfortunately, as has been the case throughout the tournament, multiple objects were once thrown onto the pitch from the crowd.

Real Madrid starlet Guler and former Manchester United loanee Sabitzer were both in the firing line.

Guler did not appear to be directly hit by anything, but multiple cups and various other objects were thrown in his direction as he prepared to take the corner that was eventually headed home by Demiral to double Turkey’s lead.

After seeing the ball hit the net, 19-year-old Guler then turned towards the crowd and cupped his ear, which lead to more objects being thrown towards him.

Sabitzer – who scored three goals in 18 appearances for Man United in the 2022/23 campaign while on loan from Borussia Dorrmund – was later struck on the side of the head by a coin as he was preparing to take a corner.

Luckily for Sabitzer – and UEFA, whose security standards during this summer’s Euros have been widely criticised – no serious damage appeared to be done.

Objects were also thrown onto the field during Tuesday’s earlier game.

In the match between Romania and the Netherlands a pair of trainers were bizarrely thrown onto the pitch and almost stopped Donyell Malen from scoring.

Romania goalkeeper Florian Nita kicked one of the trainers away, before Malen cut inside to fire home, with his shot narrowly missing the other loose shoe.

Kylian Mbappe ran over and shouted some choice words to Jan Vertonghen after the defender’s own goal sent France through to the quarter finals of Euro 2024.

Special Offer for England Fans – Get Fabrizio Romano’s Premium Transfer Newsletter FREE for a YEAR (normally £60)!

It had been a poor game which lacked quality, but the breakthrough came five minutes from time as Randal Kolo Muani’s effort deflected off Vertonghen into the back of the net.

France created a number of chances but just couldn’t find the breakthrough with even the masked Mbappe guilty of sending a few efforts wide that you would normally expect him to finish.

In the aftermath of the own goal Mbappe was seen running up to Vertonghen and shouting some choice words in his direction as the defender walked away.

The pair were involved in a scrap earlier in the game when the former Tottenham defender had accused Mbappe of diving in the box as he looked for a penalty, which he didn’t take too kindly to, and they squared up to one another and no doubt exchanged some choice words.

France will now face Slovenia or Portugal in the quarter finals, and they will be hoping that Mbappe’s form improves as he hasn’t had the best tournament so far.

Inside Spain is a weekly instalment brought to you by Football España, providing an insight into all of the major stories coming out of the rich and intense climes of La Liga and beyond.

The big French signing of the summer will undoubtedly be Kylian Mbappe joining Real Madrid, a deal that had been talked about so much that arguably the biggest signing of the past decade has faded into the background of the Euros. The biggest battle will arguably be for Lille defender Leny Yoro.

The 18-year-old centre-back seems to be widely regarded as the next best thing at the back, and it’s hard for people to avoid drawing comparisons with Raphael Varane. But while Los Blancos pid around €10m for Varane, they have had to set a limit of €40m for Yoro’s fee. Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly willing to offer both player and Lille more, closer to their €60m asking price, but it will be meaningless without Yoro’s blessing.

Paris Saint-Germain also had a bid turned down for him in January, and recently met with Yoro, which was taken as a positive for PSG. Yet Los Blancos have supposedly agreed terms with Yoro, leaving their competitors on the sidelines for now.

A good sign for Madridistas is that they are selling young right-back Alex Jimenez to AC Milan, and 22-year-old central defender Rafa Marin, who was previously set to occupy Nacho Fernandez’s place. Marin is on the verge of a €10m move to Napoli this summer, which suggest Los Blancos think either their captain will U-turn on his future, or someone else is arriving.

Across the city, Atletico Madrid remain adamant that Samu Omorodion is going nowhere. He has a reported €80m release clause, and while Chelsea’s latest bid has moved over half of that amount, Atletico are holding firm. How long that resistance lasts remains to be seen.

Up in Barcelona, they may be struggling for funds, but they still attract the finest in Spain. Teenage talent Lamine Yamal has suggested on several occasions he wants Nico Williams to join him at club level, while another Aston Villa target in Alex Baena recently commented publicly that their style of play suits him.

Many further miles north, optimism is abound around the Spain side ahead of their clash against Italy. La Roja’s opening day performance pleasantly surprised back in Spain, and the great hope is that Williams and Lamine Yamal can be the difference-makers at Euro 2024. Hopes they can go all the way have risen, and the pair of wingers, who combined are still three years younger than Pepe, are in excellent shape.

Kylian Mbappe broke his nose in France’s win against Austria on Monday night and will undergo surgery in Dusseldorf.

France produced an uninspiring performance but secured a 1-0 win thanks to a first half own goal from Maximilian Wober.

The biggest concern for Didier Deschamps though will be the fitness of Mbappe who suffered a broken nose after a collision with Kevin Danso.

Mbappe to undergo surgery on broken nose

The Real Madrid star had to leave the pitch as he was covered in blood and got booked for re-entering and trying to get substituted, before he was eventually replaced by Olivier Giroud in the closing stages.

Deschamps said after the game that Mbappe’s nose injury didn’t look good and the forward wasn’t doing well.

Kylian Mbappe receiving treatment from the French medical team.
Mbappe broke his nose in a nasty clash.

“He’s not doing well,” Deschamps said.

““He’s with the medical staff, and I had a lot of media questions before coming here, so I cannot tell you anything else.

“But his nose got badly hit, that’s for sure.

“We need to check that out, but it seems quite complicated, which is really very unfortunate for us tonight.”

It was then confirmed by the French Football Federation that Mbappe had broken his nose and would undergo surgery in Dusseldorf.

This means that the 25-year-old will likely have to wear a mask for the rest of France’s campaign depending on the extent of the injury, and Deschamps insisted the French side will always be stronger with Mbappe in it.

“I’m not going to go into hypotheses, but I’ll say what I’ve always said, the French team with Kylian will always be stronger, the national squad will always be stronger with him,” Deschamps added.

“But if, and I use your ‘if’, the news doesn’t go along these lines, we’ll have to be without him.

“But Kylian is Kylian, and any team he’s in, the squad is always much stronger.”

France will be hoping Mbappe will be able to take part in their next group game against The Netherlands on Friday before they round out the group stage against Poland.
