Leeds United have placed a £20m price tag on one of their key players this summer.

The Whites have lost a number of important players after their failure to win promotion to the Premier League.

The most high profile exit is Archie Gray, who has left the club in a big money move to join Premier League side Tottenham.

Kris Klaesson, Charlie Cresswell, Glen Kamara, Marc Roca and Diego Llorente have all been sold by the club this summer in a major overhaul of the squad.

Now, another player could follow them out of the club and the Whites are asking £20m to let him leave.

According to Leeds Live, the Championship club are ready to let Ilan Meslier leave the club this summer if they can get £20m for him.

According to the report, Marseille have been informed that if the Whites want to let their goalkeeper depart, they would probably need to give up about £20 million for him.

Leeds United want in excess of £20m for goalkeeper Illan Meslier this summer according to reports.

The Whites face the prospect of having to sell some of their key players in the window having missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season.

Meslier falls into that category as do Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray who are attracting interest from the Premier League.

Leeds set Meslier asking price

The 24-year-old made 49 appearances for Leeds in all competitions last season as Daniel Farke’s side lost to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley.

The Daily Mail report that Marseille, who have recently appointed former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager are interested in the Frenchman, with Leeds wanting more than £20m for the goalkeeper.

The report adds that Leeds have Fulham goalkeeper Marek Rodak on their list of replacements should Meslier leave, but an approach isn’t a certainty at this stage.

Marseille are interested in Meslier with Leeds wanting more than £20m.

Meslier joined Leeds from French side Lorient back in 2020 and has made 175 appearances for the Elland Road outfit to date.

The Frenchman isn’t the only Leeds player attracting interest, and alongside Gray and Summerville the likes of Willy Gnonto and Georginio Rutter are also believed to have a good chance of leaving the club this summer.

Meslier played a key role for Leeds when they were last in the Premier League as he put in a series of impressive performances and showed he was more than capable of playing out from the back which seems to be a requirement for the modern day goalkeeper.

Losing the goalkeeper would be a huge blow for Leeds, and they will need to hope they can hold onto as many of their key players as possible and recruit smartly if they are going to stand a chance of going up.

Leeds United’s Championship season isn’t yet over, with the club getting ready for their two-legged play-off semi-final against one of Daniel Farke’s old clubs, Norwich City.

Despite earning themselves 90 points in the regular season, which would arguably have seen them automatically promoted in just about any other season, a late-season collapse from the all whites saw them drop out of the top two at the death.

Indeed, their form going into the Play-Offs is poor, and they’ve never been promoted via this method.

Leeds could be searching for a new keeper

Therefore, Farke and his backroom staff are going to have to work wonders to get the squad up for two more matches, with the possibility of a third and final game to seal their fate one way or the other.

Regardless of whether they go up or not, there needs to be some improvement within the squad.

One area that they appear to be looking at according to Aftonbladet is in the goalkeeping department, and the name of Rotherham United’s Viktor Johansson has cropped up.

Across the 46 games in the regular 2023/24 Championship season, Illan Meslier let in just 43 goals – only bettered by Leicester’s 41.

“With one cap for Sweden, he’s (Johansson) a decent goalkeeper but I don’t think he’s on the level of Meslier,” he said.

“If they are going to sign him as competition for him, then there are maybe questions over Karl Darlow’s future, whether he is sticking around to be a number two.“

Leeds United only have themselves to blame if they don’t go up to the Premier League automatically.

On more than one occasion over the past few weeks the all whites have had the opportunity to put daylight between themselves and Ipswich Town, but some poor performances and results have meant that Daniel Farke’s side go into their final game against Southampton needing all three points and also needing Ipswich to lose to Huddersfield Town.

It’s an unlikely scenario and will mean that Leeds face the uncertainty of the Play-Offs despite getting at least 90 points this season.

One player perhaps more than any other will need to take a long, hard look at his individual performances if he wants to be considered a regular for Farke next season.

Aside from a game against Preston on Boxing Day in which he was sent off after 53 minutes, Illan Meslier has played every minute of every game this season per WhoScored.

However, his expected goals prevented stat of -3.9 (via FotMob) is one of the worst in the division. Should Leeds go up, Meslier has to improve in that area or face being dropped or sold.

Leeds United are very close to a Premier League return and should they achieve their goal, the Whites may look to upgrade Illan Meslier ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Yorkshire club are currently second in the Championship and are set to battle it out with Ipswich Town for the final promotion spot with two games remaining.

Kieran McKenna’s side are a point behind Leeds with a game in hand but both teams have tricky fixtures coming up so there is room for the clubs to drop points.

Should Daniel Farke’s men return to the Premier League they will need to upgrade their team and hold onto key players such as Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray.

One area of the pitch that may need one of these upgrades is the goalkeeper spot as Illan Meslier has not been convincing this season.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Square Ball Podcast, The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent Phil Hay feels that the French shot-stopper is the most obvious area that needs upgrading ahead of a potential Premier League return.

“Had it not been Meslier this season and it had been Darlow, I am not convinced that would’ve been as good a setup or worked as well. The question mark for me over Meslier is usually his distribution more than anything and the quality of it.

“But based on the little I have seen of Darlow in the flesh, which isn’t much, I do think Meslier’s distribution is better than his, so it has been the right way round and right decision to have him as a number one from a choice of the two.”

As recently as last summer, Illan Meslier was associated with some top moves linking him to Chelsea, and more recently, there have been loose connections with Bayern Munich.

The promotion under Marcelo Bielsa witnessed several Leeds United talents flourishing in the top tier. Given the youthful composition of the squad under the Argentine manager, many attracted attention from Europe’s leading clubs, so it was not an unfamiliar story with Meslier.

Raphinha made an eyebrow raising move to Barcelona, while Kalvin Phillips signed with Manchester City. Jack Harrison was linked with some of the Premier League’s prominent clubs, and Meslier’s name generated significant interest as well, as stated previously.

Former Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn has criticised goalkeeper Illan Meslier for a mistake on Friday night.

Daniel Farke’s side moved up to second spot in the Championship after a 2-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.

Patrick Bamford gave the visitors the lead in first-half extra time before Wilfried Gnonto doubled the advantage 13 minutes after the restart.

But Sheffield Wednesday almost got themselves back into the game courtesy of a mistake from goalkeeper Meslier.

After failing to hold onto a long-distance shot the ball bounced out to the feet of an attacker before Ethan Ampadu cleared off the line with a spectacular piece of defending.

Speaking on talkSPORT Redfearn criticised the French goalkeeper for an almost costly mistake.

Illan Meslier could be hit with a two-week fine after he received a red card during Leeds’ loss against Preston North End claims Alan Hutton.

Daniel Farke’s side only have one win in their last five after losing to West Brom 1-0 on Friday night at The Hawthorns.

It looked like they were back on track after their statement 4-0 win against Ipswich Town on the 23rd but Leeds succumbed to a 2-1 loss against Preston just three days later.

Farke wasn’t helped by the sending-off of his goalkeeper just after the break when he pushed Milutin Osmajic into his own penalty area.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton claimed that the French shot-stopper could receive a two-week fine for his actions.
