Leeds United came agonisingly close to grabbing an equaliser when Daniel James’ brilliant effort hit the woodwork.

The former Manchester United man played a lovely one-two on the edge of the box, setting up the chance for him to hammer the ball at goal.

It flew past McCarthy and thundered off the underside of the crossbar but somehow stayed out.

Watch below:

Unfortunately, that was the closest Leeds came to levelling the score.

Southampton went on to successfully defend their 1-0 lead until the final whistle. It’s heartbreak for Leeds but joy for the Saints, who will now join Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League.

Paul Merson has praised Leeds United for their impressive 3-0 win against Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon.

Daniel Farke’s side travelled to Wales knowing that they had to win at the Cardiff City Stadium to stay in touch with the top three after Southmapton’s 4-0 victory.

They didn’t waste any time as Patrick Bamford gave them an early lead after just 13 minutes with Daniel James then doubling their advantage before the break.

Geroginio Rutter then sealed a 3-0 victory for his side in the 88th minute as Leeds currently remains four points behind Southampton with Ipswich Town playing Sunderland in the late game.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Merson praised the overall performance of Farke’s side and highlighted three players in particular who impressed him.

“I was very impressed with Leeds, very professional,” he said via Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Chasing down Southampton is going to be a battle to the end – chasing down Southampton – but I was really impressed with Leeds United.

“Kamara in midfield ran the show, the two wingers Summerville and James, very good.”

The German manager will now turn his attention to next weekend when his side will welcome Preston to Elland Road before facing Norwich City just three days later.

Leeds United journalist Phil Hay has discussed the truth behind Daniel James’ situation at the club last season.

The Wales international was supposedly not happy with how he was treated by Leeds as they shipped him off on loan to Fulham at the last minute.

Hay said: “A lower division in the way that it has to help Rutter, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if there was confidence issues there because it wasn’t a great move to Fulham and the way it was handled, I know that James wasn’t particularly pleased about…

“But I think what he did on Saturday was quite often what people accuse him of not doing, yes the running was there, sprinting, the counter attacking and the threat to defences on the basis he’s so quick he’s a real handful. The end product was there on top of it and not for the first time either.”

Leeds United winger Daniel James is currently on loan at Fulham but the Welsh international has had limited game time at the London club.

National team manager Rob Page has now revealed that the 25-year-old winger is frustrated with the lack of game time at Fulham. James joined the London club so that he can play regular first-team football but it has not worked out for him so far.

It remains to be seen whether the 25-year-old can finish the season strongly and return to Leeds as a starter next season.

Ever since his move to Manchester United, James’ career has not gone according to plan and he has not been playing regularly at the club level.

“DJ’s fine but disappointed he’s not playing, of course he is,” Page told BBC Sport. “He’s gone [to Fulham] to play games of football and he finds it frustrating that’s he not getting the minutes he would like.

“It’s not what we want, but over the last two years it’s something we’ve been used to. He’s disappointed not to be playing but he’s ready for this camp and he’s really looking forward to getting going. DJ has still got the same ability and talent when he went to Man United.”

Apparently, the winger had the option to join Tottenham at the start of the season but he chose to move to full him so that he can get regular game time.

Marco Silva has preferred other players ahead of him and the 25-year-old will have to work harder in order to force his way into the starting lineup every week.

Leeds United winger Daniel James is currently on loan at Fulham but the player could be on his way back to Elland Road this month.

According to Fulham manager Marco Silva, the 25-year-old is still adapting to his style of football and it will be interesting to see if the player decides to return to Leeds in search of regular football.

“James is still adapting to our football club, a completely different style of play. Until now we didn’t speak about this possibility [of an early return to Leeds], we signed him on loan to stay for the season with us.

“Of course now, from yesterday, we’ve opened the market, and of course many things can happen but no news about it.”

James has had a difficult time at the London club so far and he has made just 10 appearances for Fulham since joining the club on loan.

Leeds could certainly use some reinforcements midway through the season and the return of James could be a blessing in disguise for them.

Jesse Marsch will be hoping to turn things around for his side during the second half of the campaign and the Welsh international winger could be a useful squad option for the Leeds manager.

The former Manchester United player needs to play regularly at this stage of his career and if Fulham cannot provide him with the opportunities, he should look to leave the club this month.

The market value of Leeds United winger Daniel James has tumbled in the last year or so.

The Wales international was a highly regarded prospect at Swansea City, which earned him a big move to Manchester United in the summer of 2019, and he cost as much as £25m to bring to Leeds last summer.

In May of 2021, the experts at CIES Football Observatory estimated his value somewhere as high as around £43-60million.

However, things have not gone well for James in recent times, with the wide-man falling out of favour at Leeds and heading out on loan to Fulham this summer.

His value has now fallen to closer to £20-25m, reflecting his lack of impact on the pitch in recent times.

Daniel James of Leeds United

When explaining James’ loan move to Fulham, Leeds manager Jesse Marsch said: “It was clear that if we wanted to add something that we needed to move something. I hate speaking about it that way because I love Dan James, he’s an incredible person and he gives everything to the group always.

“When we were trying to think about how to get the balance right in the team, this was the key garnering the most interest and it was the only way that we could create flexibility to try and go out and add a striker position that we felt we needed. So I wish that we wouldn’t have had to do it and even the way that it went down because it was kind of tough for Dan.

“We discussed it weeks before the transfer deadline about the possibility and then we had a lot of open conversations with Dan and it was tough at the end because I know he likes it here and his family likes it here.

“I wish him luck and I really liked him and I hope he has a good season and a good World Cup and hopefully then we’ll see him again next time.”

Hello guys and welcome to my second briefing of the day as things move quickly on Deadline Day – read on for updates on Arthur, Douglas Luiz and more!

AC Milan

Sergino Dest is currently undergoing first part of medical tests as new AC Milan player. Barcelona were ready to let him go. He joins on an initial loan with a permanent buy option.

Arsenal

Arsenal are in talks over signing Douglas Luiz. He wants to leave Aston Villa, so personal terms won’t be an issue, but discussions taking place over £20m fee.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has signed a new contract until 2024 with Arsenal before moving on loan to Southampton.

There’s no Arsenal bid for Mykhaylo Mudryk – Shakhtar Donetsk expect him to stay, they’ve also rejected other offers. Arsenal have held an interest, but nothing more concrete so far.

Aston Villa

Leander Dendoncker is on his way to Aston Villa – it’s a done deal. £13m fee agreed, with his medical taking place this afternoon.

Barcelona

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks set to leave for Chelsea, with Marcos Alonso moving to Barcelona as part of the deal.

Hector Bellerin to Barcelona is on – he’ll join until 2023 after an agreement to terminate his contract at Arsenal.

Despite reports to the contrary, Memphis Depay is now closer to staying at Barcelona rather than leaving.

Chelsea

Chelsea and Barcelona have finally reached an agreement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The fee will be €14m, plus Marcos Alonso moving in the opposite direction. Aubameyang will be in London tonight and sign a two-year contract with the option of one more.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Chelsea is nearly done

Despite reports, my understanding is that there are no advanced talks over Memphis Depay – Aubameyang remains Chelsea’s priority. As I said earlier, though, Depay is one to watch on Deadline Day – find out more here.

Kenedy is in Spain ahead of a possible move to Valladolid. His agents are working on the deal with the La Liga club.

Espanyol

Martin Braithwaite is having a medical with Espanyol as he looks set to terminate his contract with Barcelona and move on a free transfer. He’ll sign a contract until 2025 with Barca’s rivals.

Everton

Everton submitted a formal bid of £25m plus £5m in add-ons on Wednesday for Joao Pedro: Watford have turned the offer down – they have no intention to let him go.

Fulham

Layvin Kurzawa has signed his contract as a new Fulham player. He’s joining on loan from PSG – it’s now a done deal.

Daniel James is set to join Fulham on loan from Leeds. Tottenham were also interested, as I revealed earlier.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Willian is another incoming player for Fulham – he’s just signed a contract with the club and it’s a done deal.

Getafe

Jordan Amavi to Getafe, deal done. He’s flying to Spain in the next few hours to sign the contract after a move to Olympiacos fell through a few days ago.

Inter Milan

Inter Milan are set to seal the loan signing of Francesco Acerbi from Lazio. It will include the option to make the transfer permanent, but has no effect on the future of Milan Skriniar.

Leeds

Leeds are set to sign Bamba Dieng from Marseille for €10m – he joins as a replacement for Daniel James, who is moving on loan to Fulham.

Cody Gakpo was a target for Leeds, but he’s now set to stay at PSV. Leeds could try again for the Dutch winger in January.

Leicester City

Official, confirmed. Wout Faes joins Leicester on permanent deal from Reims as the club’s replacement for Wesley Fofana.

Leicester are also still working on a deal to sign Jeremie Boga from Atalanta.

Still no update on Youri Tielemans – I’m not aware of a bid from a mystery club. Personally, as I wrote earlier, I think he could have been perfect for Liverpool.

Liverpool

Arthur to Liverpool – here we go! He’s flown to the UK for his medical, with contracts all signed for loan deal valid until June 2023, with no purchase option.

Manchester City

Done deal, officially confirmed – Manuel Akanji has completed a transfer to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for a deal worth €17.5m.

Sam Edozie and Juan Larios are going to join Southampton, as first revealed yesterday – now medicals ongoing for both. Both players have buy-back clauses inserted into the deal by Manchester City.

Manchester United

Erik ten Hag is convinced Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at Manchester United – exclusive insight here.

Tahith Chong to Birmingham City is a done deal. He’s set to take a significant pay cut to leave Manchester United permanently, with a medical scheduled.

Nottingham Forest

Official, confirmed: Willy Boly has completed a move to Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal from Wolves.

RB Leipzig

Official: Josko Gvardiol has extended his contract with RB Leipzig until June 2027, with Chelsea’s €90m bid turned down yesterday. There wasn’t enough time to complete the agreement, so talks for Gvardiol to Chelsea in 2023 will continue in January.

Official, confirmed. Abdou Diallo is joining RB Leipzig on loan from PSG, with the option to make the deal permanent for €25m.

Southampton

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has completed his medical to finalise a move to Southampton. He’s joining on a season-long loan with the option to make the move permanent.

Southampton are in talks to sign Maxime Lacroix. It won’t be easy but negotiations are ongoing between Southampton and Wolfsburg.

Tottenham are chasing the transfer of Leeds United winger Daniel James, but two other clubs are also in the running for his signature.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano in the latest edition of his exclusive CaughtOffside column, with the transfer news expert providing his insight into what could happen with the Wales international on Deadline Day.

James hasn’t quite lived up to expectations at Leeds since he joined from Manchester United last summer, and it seems he could be on the move again.

Spurs are seemingly one of his main suitors, but Romano also mentioned two other unnamed clubs as being potential rivals for a deal today.

Daniel James in action for Leeds United

A decision could now be close, with Romano saying: “There are three clubs interested in Daniel James, not just Tottenham; the player will decide in the next few hours which move is the best choice for him.”

It will be interesting to see what happens next with James, who remains a promising young talent, even if he’s had a difficult time in the last year or so.

Tottenham could be a great opportunity for the 24-year-old to revive his career, and one imagines there’d be other Premier League clubs who’d welcome him.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Leeds United winger and Wales international Daniel James following speculation that Spur’s youngster Bryan Gil could exit the north London club.

According to a report by Football London, James has found himself on Spurs’ radar as a potential replacement for Gil. However, as of yet, there have been no further advances.

Football London also reports that Spurs’ managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, likes the 24-year-old.

Gil is reportedly close to joining Valencia this summer, so Conte will be keen to ensure he has a replacement ready.

The Wales international signed for Leeds last year from 20-time-league winners Manchester United for £26.19m (Transfermarkt). He has since cemented himself as an essential part of the Whites side, appearing in 32 Premier League games last season, scoring four goals and assisting with 5.

However, Jesse Marsch’s side has a lot more attacking power this season, following the additions of Luis Sinisterra and Brenden Aaronson to the Whites ranks. Therefore, James may find regular starts harder to come by.

James was suspended for Leeds’ opening game of the 2022/23 season at Elland Road against Wolverhampton Wanderers, where the side won 2-1, but has been involved in the last two matches for Leeds, including an impressive 3-0 victory against Premier League giants Chelsea.
