Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly making a good impression since returning to Old Trafford as part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff.

The Dutchman was a world class finisher for Man Utd back in the day, and he’s now helping both attacking players and defenders in training with the Red Devils as he earns praise from some of the players for his superb knowledge and attention to detail, according to the Guardian.

This certainly sounds like a smart appointment by United, with Ten Hag not having the best impact in his first two years at the club, meaning some help and some extra ideas could be useful to help take this team forward.

United fans will hope Van Nistelrooy continues to have a positive impact, but so far it sounds like it’s going really well, with the Guardian quoting Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton as being really impressed by the 48-year-old.

Van Nistelrooy praised by Manchester United players

Ruud van Nistelrooy

“He’s been brilliant, his level of detail superb. You’d be forgiven for thinking that he’s a United legend coming in so is just here [as a face]. But his level of detail, and I’ve been in a couple of meetings, is outstanding,” Heaton said.

Veteran United defender Evans added: “Having Ruud come back has been great, especially for myself. I sort of grew up idolising Ruud and the way he used to play. I got a little bit of a chance when I was a youth team player to see him.

“When he was coming to the end of his United career I might have trained with him once or twice when he was returning from injury.

“It is good to have someone of that calibre and respect in the squad.”

MUFC lost 2-1 to Arsenal in their most recent pre-season game, but fans will hope that some extra work with Van Nistelrooy on the training ground will mean the team is in better shape once the competitive football gets going.

Man United have confirmed the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake as assistant managers to Erik ten Hag as several changes are made to the Dutch coach’s staff at Old Trafford.

The Manchester club confirmed the news on Thursday stating that the Dutch duo have now arrived at the Premier League club to begin their roles as the Red Devils hope for a better season than the last campaign.

Many feel that Ten Hag is lucky to still have his job at Man United for the 2024/25 campaign having guided the club to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, as well as finishing bottom of their Champions League group.

However, United were victorious in the FA Cup and that has bought the 54-year-old more time.

Ten Hag wanted to make changes to his staff over the summer, with van Nistelrooy and Hake being two, signing deals until 2026.

Man United have also confirmed that Steve McClaren (senior first-team coach) and Darren Fletcher (first-team coach) will stay on at Manchester United; while Mitchell van der Gaag and Benni McCarthy have left the Premier League club.

Erik ten Hag “delighted” to have Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake at Man United

Speaking about the arrival of Van Nistelrooy and Hake, Ten Hag has told Man United’s media team: “I am delighted that Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge and new energy to the staff. Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level.”

Van Nistelrooy has been out of coaching since leaving PSV Eindhoven in 2023 and is looking to further his career by working with Ten Hag at Man United.

Ruud van Nistelrooy makes Man United return

The former striker returns to Old Trafford having left the Manchester club back in 2006 to complete a move to Real Madrid. The Dutch coach had a very successful career in the Premier League, winning every trophy in England during his time with United.

Van Nistelrooy would go on to make 219 appearances for Man United, scoring 150 goals and assisting a further 30.

Fans of the Manchester club will be delighted to see their former striker back and will hope to have the same success over the coming years as that the Dutchman experienced during his playing days at United.

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly returning to the club after deciding to accept a role on Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff.

This is according to Dutch journalist Maarten Wijffels, who has followed up on what Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday.

See below as Romano stated that Van Nistelrooy was set to make a decision soon on whether or not to return to Man Utd or perhaps take up the option of replacing Vincent Kompany as manager of Championship side Burnley, with today’s update suggesting he has now decided he wants to link up with Red Devils boss Ten Hag instead…

See below for today’s update from the Netherlands as it seems this exciting move is now edging closer to completion…

Van Nistelrooy impressed in a stint as PSV manager and it would have been interesting to see what he could do in a role on his own at Burnley, but one imagines he can also have a positive impact on this United team.

The Dutchman was a real great of some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s best MUFC sides, and one imagines that experience could be a crucial addition on the training pitch, especially when it comes to educating and inspiring the club’s current strikers.

Rasmus Hojlund had a stop-start first season at United last term, while someone like Marcus Rashford will be desperately hoping to get back to his best after a poor 2023/24 campaign by his high standards.

Van Nistelrooy’s presence could be key, and it will be interesting to see how senior a role he has within Ten Hag’s staff, and if it perhaps means we see something better tactically from this side after so many poor performances throughout last season.

United fans will no doubt love to see a former player coming back, and it should also lift the mood among the playing squad.

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been offered the chance to return to the club as part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff for the new season.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano on his official account on X, though the Italian also says that Burnley want Van Nistelrooy as a potential replacement for Vincent Kompany, who recently left to take over manager of Bayern Munich.

See below for details from Romano as he says Man Utd are trying to bring Van Nistelrooy back to the club in what could possibly be a new-look coaching team for Ten Hag next term…

Van Nistelrooy will supposedly decide next week, so United fans won’t have to wait too long to learn if this club legend will be returning for a non-playing role.

The Red Devils could do with bringing back someone with RVN’s experience and know-how, with the Dutchman doing a decent job during a spell in charge of PSV Eindhoven, while he was a world class player in the Premier League back in the day.

United’s strikers would surely benefit from having someone like Van Nistelrooy to learn from, as he was an elite goal-poacher who scored in high numbers to deliver a number of major titles to United during his playing days.

Which strikers will Van Nistelrooy be working with?

Ruud van Nistelrooy back to Manchester United?

While it would be good to have Van Nistelrooy to help Rasmus Hojlund out, it could also be that he’ll have Joshua Zirkzee as one of the attacking players he’ll be working with, according to iNews.

The talented young Dutchman has shone at Bologna and it would be exciting to see what he could at a big club like United next season.

Although AC Milan have also been strongly linked with Zirkzee, iNews suggests their interest has cooled, and that could perhaps allow United back in.

Former Man United star Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly close to becoming the next manager of Championship side Burnley.

The Clarets have been looking for a new coach since Vincent Kompany parted ways with the English club at the end of the season as the Belgian decided to take the giant step up to manage Bayern Munich.

Burnley were relegated from the Premier League last season but showed signs of life towards the end of the campaign. The Clarets still have a strong squad and will be contenders to bounce straight back up to England’s top flight.

The Championship outfit have now decided that Ruud van Nistelrooy is the man they want to help them achieve that and the former PSV boss is close to becoming the next manager of Burnley, reports Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

The 47-year-old is free to move to a new club having resigned as PSV boss towards the end of the 2022/23 season due to a lack of support.

The former Man United striker spent just one season with the Dutch giants but won the KNVB Cup and the Dutch Super Cup in that short time.

Former Man United star Ruud van Nistelrooy knows English football well

Van Nistelrooy knows football in England very well having spent five years in the country as a Man United player between 2001 and 2005.

The Dutch star won everything in England and is one of the greatest strikers the country has ever seen having also picked up the Player of the Season award for the 2002/03 campaign –  a year in which he won the Golden Boot.

Van Nistelrooy featured 219 times for Man United and finished his time at Old Trafford with 150 goals and 30 assists.

That is the story of his career in England as a player, with the Dutch coach now ready to write a new one as a manager.

Although Enzo Maresca hasn’t yet put pen to paper on his contract with Chelsea, Leicester City are already preparing for his departure by scouring the market for possible replacements.

Buy Last Minute Tickets to the UEFA Champions League Final!

The Foxes have come back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and in order to not be yo-yoing between the divisions, they need a manager that can continue Maresca’s good work in the King Power Stadium dugout.

Leicester looking at van Nistelrooy

Clearly, having someone with Premier League experience as either a player or manager is a must, and therefore, Ruud van Nistelrooy certainly fits the bill.

Belgian journalist, Sacha Tavolieri, has noted via X (formerly Twitter) that the former Man United striker is being considered as an option to take over at the club.

Although he’s spent his entire managerial career in his native Netherlands, the bulk of his playing days were spent at Man United alongside some legendary players.

The Dutchman will have arguably learned much from his manager at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson, and the 47-year-old can apply those principles to his own post-playing career.

He also knows what it takes to be successful in the English top-flight and can bring his United experience to bear.

Losing Maresca this summer, directly after seeing the club promoted as winners of the Championship, is unlikely to have been on the agenda for the Foxes board, however, it’s a situation that the club need to deal with, and quickly.

The longer the Midlands-based side leave it, the more difficult this summer and pre-season is likely to be for any new incumbent.

With the summer transfer window to open again shortly, having a new man in place already will be of enormous help to the club ahead of the new season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed that he wants to manage in the Premier League after rejecting several offers from around Europe.

The Manchester United legend has established himself as an excellent manager after winning two trophies and securing Champions League qualification in his first season at PSV Eindhoven.

But after an incredible season, the Dutch manager decided to leave the club as he reportedly felt that he did not have the support of the club.

One year later, it seems that Van Nistelrooy is ready to take a step back into management as he has revealed that he has already received several job offers.

The 47-year-old has stated that he wants to manage in a country where he has played with England at the top of that list.

“I have had offers from various clubs, also in my own country, but I would love to work in England or in Spain.” He said via the Mirror.

“I want to coach in a league where I have played, because in those countries I speak the language fluently.”

The Manchester United legend will no doubt be watching how things develop as the season nears its end, with several managers in the league coming under serious pressure.

Manchester United youngster Rasmus Hojlund must be feeling frustrated at his lack of service at the moment, but is not quite senior or proven enough to demand more from his teammates, according to Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand.

The former Man Utd centre-back, speaking on his YouTube show Vibe With Five, admitted that Ruud van Nistelrooy once had a similar issue during his time at Old Trafford, with the Dutch striker lashing out at Cristiano Ronaldo after being so frustrated at the inconsistency of his deliveries into the box.

However, Ferdinand says Hojlund isn’t there yet in terms of being a proven player who can speak out like that with the authority that a world class striker like Van Nistelrooy had at that time.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy more or less had Cristiano Ronaldo in tears almost one day, saying, ‘How can I make my runs when you don’t cross the ball?’ That’s how Hojlund must feel right now with the wide players he’s playing with,” Ferdinand said.

Rasmus Hojlund has struggled for Manchester United

“The difference was Ruud was the main guy in our team, the main goal getter, he had the experience, the gravitas, he could pull up young guys and say, ‘Oi put the ball in the box’ – and he said a lot more than that by the way.

“Hojlund ain’t that guy yet, he’s getting his feet under the table, unless he’s that guy who can pull people up…because he needs to.”

Hojlund joined United from Atalanta during the summer and looks like a promising young talent, but he’s not really going yet since moving to the Premier League, and it might be that fans will need to be patient before getting to see the best of him.

Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of the Daily Briefing – click here to subscribe for this and more exclusive content straight to your inbox!

AC Milan

AC Milan will unveil goalkeeper Marco Sportiello as a new signing in June. A verbal agreement was reached in February and he’s now set to join on a free transfer to come in as backup to Mike Maignan.

Ajax

Talks are ongoing between Ajax and midfield wonderkid Silvano Vos to sign a new contract. He’s a big talent from the academy and is being followed by big clubs in Europe. The player’s preference for now is to succeed at Ajax instead of moving to other important clubs who are showing an interest.

Arsenal

Arsenal’s latest proposal to Reiss Nelson is for a contract valid until June 2027 plus one year option. A short term deal was also discussed and then rejected weeks ago. Talks are now ongoing over a long term deal — but Nelson has bids from Italy, England and France.

Arsenal and Tottenham scouts have monitored Edmond Tapsoba in recent games but the race is absolutely open — Bayer Leverkusen will only sell for huge bid, but he looks like one to watch in this summer’s market.

Arsenal could sell as many as 14 players this summer, including Nicolas Pepe (Football London)

Aston Villa

Douglas Luiz: “I believe in the Aston Villa project, so that’s why I decided to stay. It’s exciting to be a part of this new era. Why wouldn’t I stay? Everything is going well. But in football, everything happens quite quickly.”

Barcelona

Jordi Alba leaves Barcelona. Spanish left back will part ways with the club — it’s over after many years together. Alba will try new chapter as free agent. Alba leaves Barca to help the club though their difficult financial situation. Xavi and Laporta let him decide as he deserved that.

Bayern Munich

Victor Osimhen celebrates a goal

Napoli want as much as €150m for Victor Osimhen. This is too expensive for Bayern Munich, and so they are targeting Randal Kolo Muani instead.

Borussia Dortmund

Official, confirmed. Mats Hummels has signed new deal at Borussia Dortmund as expected.

He said: “I’m ready to give my best for this club as always.”

Borussia director Sebastian Kehl on Jude Bellingham: “In terms of bids, there’s still nothing on the table. There are rumours, but there’s nothing on the table.”

Real Madrid always planned to submit an official bid for Bellingham after this week to respect Dortmund in the Bundesliga title race.

Brighton

No concrete or fresh talks on between Brighton and Shakhtar Donetsk for Mykola Matvienko, it’s not something close or advanced at this stage. No negotiations after €16m bid turned down last January.

Brighton are currently not working on Davide Frattesi deal despite the recent reports.

De Zerbi confirms: “For sure Frattesi’s a top player but we need different characteristics.”

De Zerbi: “I hope Levi Colwill can play with us next year, but it’s the decision of Chelsea. He’s a top player for us. Robert Sanchez? I can’t do anything. If he wants (to stay next season), for sure, but I decide the first XI.”

Chelsea

Chelsea still want more than £80m for Mason Mount, with a contract extension now looking unlikely despite Mauricio Pochettino’s efforts. He’s a priority target for Liverpool, while Manchester United also want him, and Arsenal could be there too.

Following conversation between coach and player, a mutual decision has been made for Raheem Sterling to sit out the upcoming internationals. Sterling will focusing on recuperating his body in preparation for the upcoming season. Raheem is still very much a part of Gareth Southgate’s plans.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi: “I hope Levi Colwill can play with us next year, but it’s the decision of Chelsea. He’s a top player for us.”

Fulham

Tony Khan confirms plan for Marco Silva to stay: “I am very positive about Marco staying, he is very happy at Fulham and all of us are very happy with him. We want that to continue, hopefully for a very long time.”

Inter Milan

Alessandro Bastoni on new long term deal: “I feel very good here at Inter, I’m on the same page with the club. I think we will continue together, the new deal is close.”

Bastoni’s new contract will be signed soon — valid until June 2028 for €5m net per season plus add-ons.

Hakan Calhanoglu will sign new deal in the next days — it’s all done and sealed, contract will be valid until June 2027.

“There’s an agreement in principle, I’m so happy to continue here,” he told Sky.

Juventus

Juventus have offered Adrien Rabiot a new contract, but it looks unlikely that he’ll decide to stay at the club amid interest from Manchester United, while Bayern Munich also like the player.

No changes on Leandro Paredes and Angel Di Maria future. Both expected to leave Juventus at the end of the current season. Paredes will return to PSG but he will be allowed to leave, he’s on the market. Di Maria will explore options as free agent.

Liverpool

Liverpool are advancing on the Alexis Mac Allister deal, but the situation of Mason Mount also remains a priority for the Reds. It looks difficult for Chelsea to extend Mount’s contract, even though Mauricio Pochettino would like to keep him. One issue that makes the deal complicated is that Chelsea will insist on really important money to let him go, especially to another Premier League club.

PSV boss and former Manchester United star Ruud van Nistelrooy has said that he won’t stand in the way of Cody Gakpo should his former club come knocking for the forward in January.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has already suggested that the Manchester club will try to sign a striker during the winter window, following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo during the World Cup.

United have been linked to Gakpo for some time now and their Dutch coach could be hugely influential in any deal being done.

The 23-year-old is having a very impressive season in Holland, playing 24 games with PSV and contributing with a massive 13 goals and 17 assists.

That has been followed up with an impressive World Cup campaign and has resulted in Van Nistelrooy stating that Gakpo deserves whatever comes his way and won’t block any move away from PSV.

Cody Gakpo in action for PSV

Speaking about the forward to Voetbal International, Van Nistelrooy said via talkSPORT: “It is wonderful how he has showcased himself [at the World Cup].

“I enjoyed watching him and he deserves this because of how he has behaved, how he has continued to work and continued to perform.

“I was able to help him from very close by and that makes me proud. And then I’ll give him his path when it comes.”

The former Man United star continued by talking about a move away from PSV: “If I have the choice, I prefer the summer, but it can also be now.

“You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”
