Leeds United kicked off their Championship campaign with a chaotic 3-3 draw against Portsmouth but Daniel Farke wasn’t happy with one of his players.

Having missed out on promotion last year in heartbreaking fashion at Wembley, Leeds will be hoping it’s second time lucky this season.

It’s not been the easiest of summers and the club have lost key players in Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville, whilst Wilfried Gnonto has also attracted interest from the Premier League and Leeds will be desperate not to lose anymore of their key players.

Farke not impressed with Piroe’s performance

It could have been a lot worse for Leeds and they required a 95th equaliser from Brenden Aaronson to rescue a point and ensure they didn’t get off to a losing start.

Despite losing Summerville and Gray, Leeds do still have plenty of quality in their side, but Farke was left unimpressed by the performance of Piroe who came on as a second half substitute.

Joel Piroe in action for Leeds.
Piroe is starting his second season with Leeds.

The former Swansea man is a proven goalscorer at Championship level and Farke felt the striker tried to do too much when he came on.

“Our game was not great after the changes. Over-motivated maybe to show in this 25 minutes every player wanted to show their worth. Mistakes across the whole squad,” he told Leeds Live.

“Quite normal at 2-2 after 75 and you have missed chances, perhaps some lads get tired. Natural feeling you get that nervous. Brenden had mistakes. Joel trying to prove his worth too much. Difficult to say.”

Piroe joined Leeds last summer from Swansea and scored 13 goals in 45 Championship appearances having scored 19 the season before for the Swans.

Leeds will certainly be looking to Piroe for a better return this season as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds United kick off their Championship season on Saturday against Portsmouth at Elland Road, shorn of a number of the players that took them all the way to the Play-Off final.

With three weeks left until the transfer window closes for business, there’s every chance that a handful more will bid the club farewell too.

Daniel Farke will be hoping that the all whites can go one better, even if they can’t call upon the likes of Crysencio Summerville, who recently joined West Ham.

They have at least agreed terms with a winger who could be considered his replacement, however.

According to Sky Sports, they aren’t favourites for Jesurun Rak-Sakyi from Crystal Palace but are still in the running.

Sheffield United are credited with being in pole position to sign the player on loan, and Hull have also agreed terms for him, though Leeds shouldn’t feel as if the game is already up because you never say never in football.

The loss of Crysencio Summerville to West Ham United will only be measured by how badly Leeds United miss him during the course of the 2024/25 Championship season.

One of the best players in the English second tier last season, there’s little point in anyone connected with the club still wondering what might have been as far as the 22-year-old Dutchman is concerned.

The all whites were always going to have to sell their crown jewels this summer, and that much was obvious from the moment the whistle blew at the end of the Championship Play-Off final.

Now it’s down to Daniel Farke to inject some positivity into the squad and bring in those players that will get the club back up to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, has told Give Me Sport that one of the Elland Road outfit’s targets is Norwich City’s brilliant left winger, Jonathan Rowe.

Back at the beginning of the year, West Ham were monitoring Rowe according to The Standard, and Leeds might consider it a victory of sorts if they’re able land the player.

There are just two weeks to go until the start of the new Premier League season, and West Ham are on the verge of sealing a deal that even Fabrizio Romano is impressed by.

Technical director, Tim Steidten, appears to have been working overtime this summer to bring the right type of player in to fit Julen Lopetegui’s new system.

Romano’s thumbs up for West Ham new signing

As with most windows, the East Londoners have had their fair share of misses this summer, however, a deal for Leeds United’s exciting winger, Crysencio Summerville, should have the rest of the Premier League sitting up and taking notice.

With 20 goals and nine assists last season for the all whites per WhoScored, the 22-year-old was arguably one of the players of 2023/24.

Leeds’ inability to go straight back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking was always going to see some of their best players leave the club, and the loss of Summerville is likely to be the most keenly felt by Daniel Farke.

Crysencio Summerville is on the verge of completing a deal with West Ham

“Crysencio Summerville will undergo his medical at West Ham today. The deal is almost done, and we are just waiting for the signing of all documents,” Romano said in his exclusive Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside.

“Brighton were interested but never reached an agreement for Crysencio.

“West Ham did an excellent job behind the scenes in June and then presented a formal bid almost 10 days ago, as exclusively revealed.

“The deal is £25m plus add-ons and is a very smart move from the Hammers.”

With a few weeks left of the transfer window, West Ham have every chance to complete a handful of other studious purchases to give Lopetegui the best chance of hitting the ground running from the get go.

For the second summer in a row, Leeds United have been busy in the transfer market.

After being unable to get back up to the Premier League at the first opportunity – agonisingly losing the Play-Off final to Southampton – there was always going to be a financial element that would come into play.

Manager, Daniel Farke, and owners, 49ers Enterprises, are seemingly caught between a rock and a hard place given that the club need to have quality players within the squad in order to give them the best chance of promotion this season, whilst understanding that many of the club’s better players will want to leave.

Willy Gnonto has often been touted as a player who will be one of those to move on, and it was believed that he would soon be making a switch to Everton.

However, Sky Sports journalist, Alan Myers, has all but confirmed that the deal is now off.

Daniel Farke has admitted Leeds still ‘have work to do’ in the transfer market but insisted the club will maintain a ‘careful’ approach.

The Whites have already had a very busy summer, with the likes of Archie Gray, Luis Sinisterra and Glen Kamara departing to raise significant funds.

Leeds have already secured the signings of Joe Rodon, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rothwell and Alex Cairns. However, the pressure on Farke will be high after United lost last season’s Championship playoff final 1-0 to Southampton — failing to secure a return to the Premier League at the first attempt.

“We still have a bit of work to do,” Farke told LeedsLive following a 2-0 friendly win over Schalke in Germany on Saturday.

“I mentioned the positions we have to look at, the number eight position, central midfielders, and the full-back option.”

But despite openly admitting that three different positions may need strengthening in this window, Farke insisted Leeds will adopt a ‘careful’ approach, only signing the ‘right choice’ rather than making any panic buys.

“We can do this because we have a strong group right now, without the need to rush things or overdo things,” Farke added.

“It’s more like we can be quite careful in who we pick and who is available. For that, if we got, perhaps, a new signing in these positions even a bit later, it wouldn’t cause any damage.

“It’s just important it’s the right choice and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Leeds conclude their pre-season schedule with a friendly against Valencia at Elland Road on Saturday, a week before they open their Championship campaign at home to Portsmouth.

Leeds United’s technical director Gretar Steinsson has travelled to Germany in order to try and complete a deal for Austrian International midfielder Dejan Ljubicic.

It’s been a difficult summer for Leeds, who after failing to win promotion back to the Premier League are facing the prospect of having to sell a number of their star players.

Teenager Archie Gray has left for Tottenham in a deal worth £40m, whilst the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto have been strongly linked with moves to the Premier League.

Steinsson travels to try and complete Ljubicic

Leeds are in tricky position, particularly in midfield having also lost Glen Kamara to French side Rennes, but it appears they have identified a possible replacement.

The Whites are trying to complete a deal for FC Koln midfielder Ljubicic, and have reportedly already had a bid of £3.37m rejected for the Austrian.

MOT Forum have reported that Leeds are set to test Koln’s resolve with an improved offer and have sent technical director Steinsson to Germany to try and get a deal over the line.

Dejan Ljubicic in action for FC Koln.
Ljubicic could be set for a summer move to Leeds.

The Austrian only has 12 months left on his contract with the German second division side, so it would seem the two clubs should be able to strike a deal.

The 26-year-old joined the German outfit in 2021 from Austrian side Wien and has scored eight goals in 83 appearances for the club.

The midfielder has some versatility and can also play on the right side of midfield and as a number six, which could appeal to Daniel Farke.

Leeds currently have Ethan Ampadu among their midfield ranks and Ljubicic could be a good partner for the more defensive minded Welshman.

The Whites will need to add more quality as they look to get out of the Championship at the second time of asking, and they are likely to have a sizeable budget to reinforce their squad given the players they will likely have to sell.

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has praised the performances of both Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto following their friendly clash with Hannover 96 on Wednesday despite the duo being linked with moves to the Premier League.

The wingers have attracted a lot of attention from the English top flight following their displays last season, especially the Dutch star, with the 22-year-old producing 21 goals and 10 assists across 49 matches in all competitions.

Summerville was crowned The Championship Player of the Season for 2024 and according to Sky Sports, West Ham and Fulham are two clubs pushing for the Leeds star.

Despite being linked with moves away from Elland Road, both Summerville and Gnonto played in the Yorkshire club’s 4-1 win over Hannover on Wednesday and after that match, Leeds manager Daniel Farke admitted that he could lose both players before the transfer window shuts.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Farke admitted nothing can be ruled out, but is pleased with the application the duo have shown so far in pre-season

The German coach said about the futures of Summerville and Gnonto: “Yes, in football you can never rule out anything, so all is possible. For that I can’t give any guarantees as I am not a magician. I can just judge what I see and both are fully integrated, they are fun to be here, they work hard.

“Even today was a game the opponent tried to set some signs and the first target is always Summerville or Gnonto with many tackles. It showed maturity the way they handled it and how they kept going to bring themselves into good shape.

“So for that I just can judge what I see, I see hard work and commitment, great attitude and for that I am more than hopeful they chip in with top performances like last season.”

Leeds will likely receive big money for the sale of both players and if they are resigned to losing them, they should try and get deals done now. That would give the Championship side enough time to recruit their replacements and they can bring in quality as they will have the funds to do so.

It’s already been another summer of huge upheaval for Leeds United, after their failure to get promoted to the Premier League meant that the owners would need to authorise a second mass exodus in 12 months in order to keep within Financial Fair Play boundaries.

A number of players have departed with star man, Crysenscio Summerville, understood to be the subject of interest from West Ham United.

As of this moment, the 22-year-old, who bagged 21 goals and provided nine assists last season (WhoScored) remains a Leeds player.

However, it’s almost certain that he won’t be lining up at Elland Road next season unless it’s in opposition.

There is a silver lining on the horizon for owners, 49ers Enterprises, though.

According to Leeds Live, there’s an acceptance from all parties that Summerville is highly likely to leave this summer, but the player’s camp want to ensure that Leeds get a good deal out of the sale given that they were the club that gave him his chance in England.

If the player was always going to move on anyway, then earning as much as possible has to be seen as a positive.

Leeds United have entered the race to sign Bournemouth striker Daniel Jebbison on loan this summer, according to reports.

Jebbison only recently joined the Cherries from relegated Sheffield United as he looks to get his career back on track following a spate of injuries.

The 21-year-old striker, who was born in Canada but is also eligible to represent England at international level, was courted by a number of Championship clubs this summer before opting to move to the Vitality Stadium.

However, with Dominic Solanke enjoying a 19-goal season in the Premier League in 2023/24, it’s unlikely Jebbison will get too many chances, with a loan the best thing for his development at this stage.

Jebbison to Leeds?

According to HITC (via GIVEMESPORT), Leeds were one of the Championship outfits interested in Jebbison — who scored three goals in 35 appearances for Sheffield United, as well as nine in 23 during a 2021/22 loan spell with Burton Albion — prior to his move to Bournemouth.

And it’s understood that Leeds could still land the striker having shown interest in bringing him to Elland Road on loan from the Cherries — although they could face competition from other Championship sides.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke will need all the reinforcements he can get as he’s under pressure to deliver in 2024/25 after the Whites lost the Championship playoff final 1-0 to Southampton — failing in their attempt to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
