Former England international Carlton Palmer thinks it will be a tight race for Brahima Diarra this summer, but believes Leeds could be a “great fit” for the midfielder.

The Whites are looking to win promotion back to the Premier League having lost in the Play-Off final to Southampton last season.

Leeds are facing the prospect of having to sell a number of their key stars after failing to gain promotion, and they have already lost talented teenager Archie Gray to Tottenham, whilst Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto have been linked with moves to the Premier League.

Leeds the “perfect” fit for Diarra

Daniel Farke’s side are in the market for midfield reinforcements having lost both Gray and Glenn Kamara, and Diarra represents an interesting option.

The 21-year-old is currently a free agent following Huddersfield’s relegation to League One and he’s hoping for a move to the Premier League or back to the Championship.

Diarra, who has spent his entire career with Huddersfield has recently been linked with moves to Burnley, Hull and Leeds according to reports.

However, Palmer thinks Leeds could be a good move for Diarra, who is currently at the Olympics representing Mali.

Diarra is currently a free agent after his contract with Huddersfield expired.

“He has several clubs that are interested, Burnley, Hull and Leeds are all keen to acquire his services and top flight clubs in France and Belgium are also monitoring the situation,” he told Football League World.

“Burnley are going to be at the top end of the table, Leeds are going to be at the top end of the table after they just missed out on getting promotion last season.

“Hull you would expect to be in the top six, so any one of those football clubs would be a good move for him.

“I think maybe Leeds would be a great fit for him, and we know that there’s still some business to be done at Leeds United.

“There could be people like Gnonto and Summerville who may be set to leave, so you know Leeds United are going to be in that race next season.

“I’d like to see him at Leeds where I think he could have a really big impact and the fans would take to him with his exciting style of play.”

Diarra made 23 appearances in all competitions last season and a decision on his future is set to be taken after the Olympics.

Following the release of their 2022–23 financial statements, Burnley will need to take steps to prevent such financial lapses in the future, sources have informed Football Insider.

Following their relegation to the Championship, the club’s turnover was halved to £65 million, with an overall loss of £28 million, according to the records released this week.

Burnley face financial crisis after increase in debt

The club’s bank loans have increased to £70 million, according to the documents, bringing its total debt to £81 million, up from £53 million in their 2021–22 accounts.

There is a huge risk of the club going into financial trouble because of their high debt if they are relegated from the Premier League this season.

Repayment of a £65 million loan from MSD Holdings, which was obtained at the club’s acquisition in 2020 and is due by 2027, is currently underway.

Due to a £26 million profit in their 2021–22 accounts, Burnley are not immediately in danger of breaking any financial laws; nonetheless, action is now required to help the club avoid future infractions and possible point punishments.

Burnley face threat of relegation from Premier League

With seven matches remaining for them in the Premier League this season, Burnley are sitting in 19th place, six points behind Nottingham Forest in 17th place.

At this stage, relegation for them is looking highly likely and they have to be prepared to face the financial consequences that come with it.

Because of the significant drop in broadcast fees between the divisions, Burnley’s relegation this season is expected to bring about another season of severe losses.

King Charles III’s coronation is the talk of the town today as the world has witnessed him officially being crowned the King.

The football matches have been affected by the Coronation ceremony with some games getting rescheduled.

As the business end of the season approaches with team fighting for promotion and relegation, King Charles will be relieved about his favourite football team. The newly crowned King is a Burnley fan who have already won promotion to the Premier League.

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley have won promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge of the club.

The love of football runs deep in the Royal Family as Prince of Wales, Prince William, is a passionate Aston Villa fan and he has been spotted regularly at Villa games. The late Queen was an Arsenal fan and invited the Arsenal team of Arsene Wenger to have a cup of coffee at the Buckingham Palace.

King Charles once revealed at an event his love for Burnley. “Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.”

At an event in 2012, Charles said: “A consortium of my charities, including the British Asian Trust, has been working in Burnley.

“Hence, some of you asked this evening whether I support a British football club and I said ‘yes, Burnley’.”

“And people have responded ‘Burnley?’ Oh yes, because Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.”

King Charles’ favourite team Burnley will lift the Championship trophy on Monday in the final match of the season against Cardiff City.

Wolves announced on Tuesday afternoon that they had closed a deal for Burnley defender Nathan Collins, who joins from Burnley on a five-year deal. The 21-year-old has become the most expensive Irish player in history.

That’s according to the Irish Independent, who say his €24m (£20.21m) fee is in excess of the previous record, set by Robbie Keane. Ireland’s top scorer in international football with 68 goals, Keane moved from Tottenham to Liverpool for £20m back in 2008, although that move famously didn’t work out with Keane going back to Spurs less than six months later.

Collins will travel immediately to Alicante with the Wolves squad as they prepare for the new season.

Collins moved to Burnley from Stoke City in 2021 for £12.6m and after just one season, has shown enough for Wolves to be convinced that he is good enough for Premier League football. The speed of his rise is just as evident in his international career. Collins only has six caps for Ireland, despite the national team being quick to blood youngsters under Stephen Quinn.

Burnley have taken the plunge and appointed former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany as their head coach. The Belgian manager was in charge of Anderlecht in his home country last season but quit his post at the end of May.

The club made the news official on their website on Tuesday afternoon, although they did not specify how long for. Kompany has returned to English football after three years away in which he retired from professional football and launched his career in management.

Kompany was at Manchester City for 11 years.

In 2019, he joined Anderlecht as a player-coach but quickly stepped down to focus on his playing duties, handing the reigns over to Simon Davies. At the end of the season Kompany then retired from playing in order to focus on management.

In his three years at Anderlecht, he failed to win a major honour, despite the large expectations. In the three seasons he was present, they recorded finishes of 8th, 4th and 3rd in the league, while making the Belgian Cup final.

Kompany remains unproven as a manager, although he has worked alongside some of the best minds in the game. Burnley are likely to be a baptism of fire in their own way, with the Championship being a tricky league to get out of at the best of times.

Much of the football world were struggling to get their collective heads around Sean Dyche’s dismissal at Burnley last week. It seems the Burnley squad were no different.

Speaking to SkySports, defender Matt Lowton explained the scene in the dressing room as Dyche bid farewell to the squad. According to him, they were expecting a tactical briefing on the next match.

“I was on the way in and we got a phone call to say we had a meeting, and we were wondering why. I was thinking it was building up to the next game or something.

“But we got in and the manager came in and said this is the end of it now. He said ‘Thanks for everything, good luck moving forward’. That was it.”

“We all sat there in shock, we were surprised, but it happens in football. I’m grateful of what he did for the club and myself but we have to move forward. We can’t dwell on it for too long.

“After the manager had left we had a meeting amongst ourselves, and said it was down to us now as players. We have to be professional about it, and I felt we responded quite well at West Ham and on another day we could have got the three points.”

Burnley decided to sack Dyche after ten years at the club and their longest spell in the top flight. Despite being relegated with Burnley twice, Dyche then guided Burnley back to the Premier League on both occasions. Since 2016, they have remained in the Premier League, although they are in jeopardy of losing that status currently.

The surprise at Dyche’s sacking comes with good reason – he will likely leave a vacuum in terms of power and leadership at the club, with defender Ben Mee replacing him on an interim basis until the end of the season. In 2020, American owners ALK capital took charge of the club and that could be part of the reason for the change of approach.

Tottenham to frustrate Liverpool with late bid for top striker target

Brendan Rodgers is looking to re-shape his Anfield attack and is readying a bid for Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke, the Liverpool manager keen to use the Belgian as the spearhead of his new-look front-line.

Benteke had struggled for form over the past 18 months but a prolific run of form under new boss Tim Sherwood has once again made the Villa Park ace a much sought after property.

The 24 year old has bagged 12 goals in his last 12 appearances to help Sherwood’s side to Premier League safety as well as a spot in the FA Cup final and Aston Villa will be reticent to lose such a key performer.

Liverpool are also pushing on with efforts to bring in out of contract duo Danny Ings and James Milner, with the Burnley and Man City stars representing potentially cost effective additions to Rodgers’ failing squad.

Liverpool offer striker in swap deal to sign Chelsea transfer target

According to the Independent, Brendan Rodgers’ position at Anfield is safe and, with the season having ended, their attentions are now focused on who they want to sign in the summer transfer window.

Benteke, who has almost single-handedly fired Villa to Premier League safety through his fine goalscoring form under Tim Sherwood, is a top target for the club.

Fenway Sports Group, the Reds’ American owners, are said to have made contact with Aston Villa over Benteke, and could follow up their discussions with an official bid. With two years remaining on his contract, he could cost in excess of £20m.

The Belgium international has scored 13 domestic goals all season – far from the prolific goalscorer that Liverpool need – but 11 of those finishes have come since March, suggesting that he may have finally rediscovered his form and confidence which took a hit following a long-term injury suffered before the 2014 World Cup. In the end, those 13 goals were 42% of Villa’s total of 31 for the season – illustrating just how dour the club were to watch under Paul Lambert.

The Merseyside club are also hopeful of landing Burnley forward Danny Ings and Manchester City midfielder James Milner, both free agents, but the report suggests that a deal for either player isn’t close to being completed.

The Burnley defender has been a consistent performer during a difficult season for the Clarets and is set to depart Turf Moor in the summer after the club’s relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

Spurs are thought to be close to triggering a £3.5million release clause in Trippier’s contract as they look to strengthen in the full-back area given the injury problems that Kyle Walker has suffered throughout the campaign.

The 24-year-old has attracted interest from Liverpool and newly-promoted Bournemouth, but it appears that Mauricio Pochettino has nudged ahead in the race to sign the former England U21 international.

Following a last day 1-0 victory against Everton, Spurs will enter the Europa League next season at the group stage after pipping Liverpool to a top-five finish in the final league table.

With the Premier League over for another year, here’s a list of 25 of the biggest talking points and lessons learned from the 2014/15 season, including analysis on Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and more…

Chelsea star John Terry breaks Man United legend’s 22-year record after superb title win

1) Mourinho’s still got it

Fairly obvious, but another Premier League title win for Jose Mourinho eases any doubt that the Chelsea boss had ‘lost it’ after two consecutive trophyless seasons prior to this one. This title win was a stroll in the park for the Blues, who will surely only get even stronger next season and do better in the FA Cup and Champions League.

2) The romance of the game is fading

It was fairly surreal seeing Frank Lampard lifted into the air by his Manchester City team-mates on the final day of the season. Isn’t this the grand farewell from English football that he deserved at Chelsea? Why wasn’t the club legend informed before the final day of last term that he would be leaving? Lampard’s treatment by Chelsea and his own surprise move to join a major rival just shows the romance of the game is a thing of the past.

Chelsea transfer news

3) Arsenal are closer to being challengers

Although Arsenal may have been top for much longer last season, they perhaps looked closer to being the real deal this term. The Gunners have done well to finish third, running Manchester City pretty close for second and finishing above both Liverpool and Manchester United. There is clearly work to be done, but one feels there are fewer glaring areas of weakness in this squad and there is no longer the same fear that they will sell their stars this summer. Next season might be too soon, but in some ways Arsene Wenger’s side look like being Chelsea’s likeliest challengers.

4) …but Giroud is arguably their biggest problem

He continues to divide opinion, but it must be said that Olivier Giroud’s lack of quality at the crucial moments continues to be a major factor for Arsenal. At the age of 28, he looks unlikely to develop into a true 30-goal-a-season striker anytime soon, and must be replaced this summer.

Arsenal rumours

5) Szczesny also needs replacing

With the unconvincing David Ospina keeping Wojciech Szczesny out of the starting lineup, it’s clear the Pole has had his last chance at the Emirates Stadium. Once hailed as the next big thing, he surely has no future at Arsenal after messing up one too many times.
