Manchester United are reportedly open to two other potential midfield transfer targets alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte, who may be too expensive.

According to Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel, Man Utd are not willing to pay crazy money to PSG for Ugarte, even if he remains their preferred target, with cheaper options such as Burnley’s Sander Berge and former loanee Sofyan Amrabat also under consideration.

Ugarte looks ideal for United and may be realistically available this summer due to there being so much competition for places in Luis Enrique’s PSG midfield, though the Uruguay international surely won’t come cheap due to only just joining the Ligue 1 giants a year ago.

Berge could be a decent alternative after often performing well in the Premier League, even if he’s not exactly the kind of player you’d rank as one of the best in Europe.

Manuel Ugarte has been a top target for Manchester United

Likewise, Amrabat showed some promise towards the end of his loan spell at Old Trafford last season after initially making a quiet start to life at the club.

Ugarte transfer: Can Man United reach an agreement for their top target?

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside recently, Jonathan Johnson explained the various moving parts in the Ugarte situation and what PSG’s plans might be for the Uruguay international.

“Ugarte to United seems to have gathered pace quite significantly and it’s not too surprising. I think Ugarte is tailor-made for the Premier League and I think the drop-off from Casemiro in the season just gone means it’s normal United would be looking for a profile like that to replace him,” Johnson said a few weeks ago.

“It’s a critical moment as well because if this drags on and Ugarte finds himself out of favour with Enrique at the start of the new season with PSG, it will become that much harder for them to command the kind of fee they’ll want, and perhaps even half what they paid for him 12 months ago. If he goes now, PSG won’t make as much of a loss.”

This surely plays into United’s hands, so it looks like this will surely remain one to watch as the window nears its conclusion.

Manchester United’s Swedish defender, Victor Lindelof, is attracting serious interest from several clubs in Saudi Arabia and Italy.

The Saudi Pro League are continuing their efforts to sign top European players and have had Lindelof on their radar for a while now.

Additionally, CaughtOffside sources understand that a handful of Italian clubs are keen to strengthen their defence by bringing the Swedish international into their squads.

Victor Lindelof set to depart Man United

United are asking for a transfer fee between £6m/£9m for the player, and it’s believed that Lindelof is looking for a new challenge.

If the transfer goes through shortly, it’s expected to spark a domino effect in terms of transfers at the club.

Current Bayern Munich players, centre-back, Matthijs de Ligt, and right-back, Noussair Mazraoui, will arrive.

Matthijs De Ligt is keen on a move to Man United and the deal could be completed once Victor Lindelof moves on.
Matthijs De Ligt is keen on a move to Man United and the deal could be completed once Victor Lindelof moves on.

Indeed, as significant progress has already been made in negotiations between the two clubs, the transfers are likely to be completed soon.

The additions of de Ligt and Mazraoui will bolster United’s defensive options and arguably enhance the team’s competitive edge.

CaughtOffside sources further understand that a deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka is close to being completed with West Ham United.

United will then takes steps to strengthen their midfield, with Burnley’s Norwegian ace, Sander Berge, expected to move to Old Trafford.

Initial talks have already begun, and it is reported that Berge is keen to make the move.

The Red Devils have allocated a budget of £23m for Berge but the Clarets are demanding closer to £30m, with CaughtOffside sources understanding that the two clubs could meet somewhere in the middle.

Additionally, United have offered Berge an attractive contract worth £100,000 per week, and it’s thought that this transfer could be a crucial step in United’s quest to replace Casemiro in defensive midfield, thus showing the Brazilian that he may no longer be a first choice and therefore may reconsider a move to Saudi Arabia or elsewhere.

Manchester United are reportedly in talks with both Burnley and Monaco over potential midfielder transfers, with Sander Berge and Youssouf Fofana on the agenda.

That’s according to Dharmesh Sheth via his official account on X below, with the Sky Sports News journalist explaining that Man Utd have had contact with Burnley over Berge, while a dialogue is still open with Monaco over potentially snapping up Fofana from the Ligue 1 giants.

See below for the latest details on the situation, with United clearly keeping busy as they look for upgrades on their current midfield options, with Scott McTominay possibly someone who could leave Old Trafford this summer, as Fabrizio Romano told us earlier today…

Berge has had a decent spell at Burnley, though some fans might question if he’s really done enough to earn a move to a top club like United at this point in his career, whereas Fofana probably looks like the player with the higher ceiling who could be just what Erik ten Hag’s side needs in that area of the pitch.

Sander Berge to Manchester United?

Berge seems likely to be available after Burnley’s relegation as he’ll surely be someone who wants to be back playing in the Premier League as soon as possible, so it will be interesting to see if that boosts the Red Devils.

MUFC have had a busy summer so far, bringing in Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, while there’s also been a shake-up to Ten Hag’s coaching staff with the arrival of club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Last season, Man United manager, Erik ten Hag, faced significant issues with experienced midfielder, Casemiro, hence a potential pursuit for Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte.

Opponents were able to penetrate United’s back line too easily, with the Brazilian struggling to hold the fort.

The Red Devils pursuit of Ugarte was expected to progress after PSG signed Portuguese star, Joao Neves, however, it seems that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his board are continuing to baulk at the asking price for the Uruguayan.

Man United’s surprise alternative to Ugarte

Indeed, CaughtOffside sources now understand that United could consider a surprise alternative, notwithstanding that Scott McTominay could also yet leave the club in the current transfer window.

English Championship side, Burnley, won’t let Sander Berge go cheaply, but sources indicate that his agents have approached United regarding the availability of their client.

Man United have been offered a surprise alternative to Manuel Ugarte

At this stage it remains unclear whether the Red Devils will prioritise Berge’s transfer, but he certainly represents value for money.

It’s believed that Ugarte would cost upwards of £50m, whilst Berge, 26, is understood to be available for less that half that, at around the £20m-£24m mark.

Turkish giants, Fenerbahce, have also been linked with Berge, but the financial conditions on the deal are not yet considered suitable for Jose Mourinho’s new club.

With a few weeks still to go in the current transfer window, there’s plenty of time to get deals over the line, however, given that the trail for Casemiro to move to the Saudi Pro League seems to have gone cold, there’s a very real possibility that he will still be a United player come the first match of the season.

His astronomical wages (£350,000 per week according to Capology) would appear to be an issue, even for the Saudis, and perhaps, given his advancing years, Casemiro and his representatives would do well to lower their demands a little.

In so doing, it could set in motion a domino effect that will keep all parties happy.

Manchester United are struggling to sign a midfielder this summer.

The Red Devils desperately need a new addition in the midfield with some of their midfielders facing an uncertain future at the club.

Casemiro, Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen are either past their peak or not wanted at the club anymore.

In order to add depth and quality in the midfield position, the Red Devils have identified Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte as their top target.

However, if they fail to sign the Uruguayan midfielder, they will plot a surprise move for Burnley midfielder Sander Berge, according to journalist Duncan Castles.

Berge wants to leave the club this summer after Burnley got relegated from the Premier League while the club is also considering offloading the player in order to settle their financial situation after relegation to the Championship.

Ugarte remains the club’s top choice for the midfield position but negotiations with the French champions have been tough.

PSG are set to complete the signing of Joao Neves from Benfica and as part of the deal, Renato Sanches will join the Portuguese club on loan.

The above mentioned move can facilitate Ugarte’s transfer to Old Trafford but the clubs will have to first agree a fee for the transfer.

Man United Burnley Sander Berge
Man United plan surprising move for Burnley midfielder Sander Berge.

The journalist said on the Football Transfers Podcast:

“Another individual who I don’t think has been mentioned at all as a candidate for Manchester United, but who I’m told they are discussing as an option should the Ugarte deal not go through is Norway international Sander Berge.

“He’s 26 years of age, he will almost certainly leave Burnley this summer having only joined them last summer when they were promoted to the Premier League. He does not want to play in the Championship again having first come to England with Sheffield United in January 2020.

“A surprise option for United, but one they may go for if they can’t get a resolution with PSG and who would be a cheaper option and allow them to allocate some money to other areas of the team.”

Man United interest in Sander Berge shows pragmatism

The journalist mentioned that by signing Berge, Man United would be able to reallocate some funds to other positions, as they intend to bring in two more centre-backs and a right back this summer.

After joining Burnley from Sheffield United the previous summer and helping them achieve promotion back to the Premier League, Berge played a significant role for the team in the Premier League last season.

United’s interest in Berge shows a defensive approach in their transfer strategy and one they perhaps should not consider.

It could be a big season ahead for David Moyes and West Ham United, and if the club spend the money they expect to receive for Declan Rice wisely, they could really make a splash in the Premier League and Europe during 2023/24.

Although last season by and large was disappointing domestically, the Hammers were imperious in the Europa Conference League which they deservedly won against Fiorentina in Prague.

The season before, Moyes had guided the east Londoners to the Europa League semi-finals, and the first-team really looked to be on the up.

Now they have another chance to progress and they could end up with a highly-rated defensive midfielder to help their cause.

Speaking to Give Me Sport regarding Sheffield United’s Sander Berge, Dean Jones was fairly forthright on where he thinks Berge could end up next.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Fulham had another look at this, especially at £10 million,” he said.

“It wouldn’t even surprise me if West Ham got involved in a conversation like that if it was such good value.”

At a cost of just £10m, if there’s any chance of bringing Berge to the London Stadium, it would appear to be a bit of a no-brainer for the club.

The Norwegian is only 25 years of age, and at six feet and five inches tall, he would be a real presence sat in front of the West Ham defence.

It’s believed he isn’t interested in signing a new contract with the Blades, and to that end – given he could leave for nothing in 12 months time – there’s an opportunity to acquire him for a cut price.

Newcastle United were reportedly interested in signing Sander Berge during the January transfer window.

According to reports, the Newcastle assistant manager Jason Tindall was the main driving force behind the club’s interest in signing the Norwegian midfielder.

Berge has been an important player for Sheffield United in the Championship and he could prove to be a quality acquisition for Newcastle. Berge will want to play in the Premier League and he managed to impress in the top flight with the Blades in the past. He could be a useful player for Eddie Howe next season.

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle reignite their interest in signing the midfielder at the end of the season. Apparently, Newcastle held talks with Sheffield United regarding a loan move in January but the transfer never materialised.

The report further states that Newcastle are keeping tabs on Iliman Ndiaye as well. The attacker is valued at £25 million and he has 11 goals and 7 assists to his name across all competitions. He was a target for Everton during the January window.

Newcastle need to add more depth and quality to their midfield and attack in the summer and the likes of Ndiaye and Berge could prove to be quality acquisitions.

Newcastle United are interested in signing the Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge before the January transfer window closes.

According to a report from Give Me Sport, Newcastle United want to add more depth to their midfield following the departure of Jonjo Shelvey to Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies have Identified a move for the 24-year-old Norwegian international and it remains to be seen whether they can get the deal across the line before the transfer window closes.

Apparently, Newcastle hope to sign the midfielder on loan until the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether the Championship outfit are prepared to let him leave.

Sheffield United are fighting for promotion to the Premier League and loaning a key player out midway through the campaign might not make sense for them.

According to journalist Dean Jones, Sheffield United will only sell the player on a permanent deal and it remains to be seen whether Newcastle are prepared to shell out a reasonable amount of money for him.

Jones told GiveMeSport“They’re linked with Sander Berge and there is genuine interest there.

“But they want that to be a loan with money to come later on. The problem is if Sheffield United are going to let Sander Berge go right now, they want cash.”

The 24-year-old has proven himself in the Premier League in the past and he could prove to be a useful addition to Eddie Howe’s side.

Arsenal and Liverpool have reportedly both recently registered an interest in the potential transfer of Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.

The 24-year-old has shone in the Championship and also has experience playing in the Premier League and the Champions League, so it’s not too surprising that top flight clubs remain keen on him.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United are now exploring a late move for Berge, who has also been the subject of recent interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.

Still, with the Gunners now signing Jorginho from Chelsea, their interest in Berge will surely be over, while Liverpool perhaps need a different style of player from the Norway international.

Sander Berge celebrates a goal for Sheffield United

Berge is surely good enough to at least be a squad player for a top six side, but he might have more of a chance of playing regularly for someone like Newcastle, who are still building towards being genuine top four contenders.

The Magpies have spent wisely since their Saudi takeover, and Berge could be another decent addition for the short and long term.
