As the transfer market begins to heat up, CaughtOffside sources understand that Spanish top-flight team, Villarreal, are looking to plunder Premier League outfit, Wolverhampton Wanders, for two of their players.

Coach of the Yellow Submarine, Marcelino, is believed to be specifically targeting a striker and a winger, with the latter also able to operate as a second striker when needed.

That is seemingly what’s led to the interest in Wolverhampton’s 27-year-old Portuguese player, Goncalo Guedes, who as AS report was once a target for Catalan giants, Barcelona.

Premier League club Wolves set to lose two

CaughtOffside sources indicate that the Midlands-based side have set a reasonable price tag of around €20m for Guedes, though manager, Gary O’Neil, hopes to begin the 2024/25 Premier League season with the Portuguese still part of his squad.

It’s understood too that Marcelino is running the rule over 23-year-old Colombian defender, Yerson Mosquera, who Wolves have yet to place a value on, simply because O’Neil can’t countenance the thought of losing him.

Molineux Stadium, home of Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers
Molineux Stadium, home of Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers

Villarreal would test the waters with an opening offer of €9m says sources.

Though losing either player is clearly going to impact on Wolves’ ambitions, if they’re able to bring in a decent amount in transfer funds, it would allow O’Neil to go on a late window spending spree, where there’s likely to be a few bargains to be had.

With almost a month left of the summer window, that would still give the manager a chance to bring new faces into the side without upsetting the team dynamic and dressing room equilibrium.

Transfer deadline day is always exciting for the fans, however, last-minute captures for clubs – some two weeks after the season has started – can rarely be considered good business, particularly if a club has been using the same system and personnel for the majority of pre-season.

Tottenham have reportedly already initiated contact with the representatives of Athletic Bilbao manager Marcelino as a potential Jose Mourinho replacement.

The 55-year-old has a good reputation from his work in La Liga and could now be in line for a move to the Premier League after Mourinho’s sacking by Spurs this week.

MORE: Jamie Redknapp lets slip the real reason for Jose Mourinho sacking

According to The Athletic, Marcelino is one of the names on Tottenham’s list and some contacts have already been made as they prepare to hire a long-term replacement for Mourinho.

Tottenham haven’t had the best season, and it’s clear a change of direction was needed, though the timing of Mourinho’s sacking was a surprise.

The north London outfit take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final this weekend, and will have the inexperienced Ryan Mason in charge after he was installed as caretaker manager.

Spurs fans will wonder if this was the best time to part ways with Mourinho, but Marcelino would surely be seen as a good replacement.

The tide has definitely turned at the Camp Nou over the past seven days.

Two epic wins over Sevilla, including a comeback from 0-2 down in the Copa del Rey semi-final, and the arrest of former president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, on corruption and money laundering charges, has seen those of a blaugrana persuasion altogether happier with their lot.

MORE: Emotional Robbo slams Liverpool

With a new president to take charge as from Sunday night, it appears that there are reasons to be optimistic about the future after what has been a tumultuous 18 months for the club.

They’ll play old foes, Athletic Club, in the Copa del Rey final on April 17, two weeks after Athletic play Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Marcelino will be looking to complete a quite unique hat-trick in the cup competition and if Athletic beat local rivals La Real, then only Barca stand in his way.

At the 21st time of asking, Marcelino finally got the better of Barcelona as a coach – for Valencia in the 2019 Copa del Rey final.

Covid-19 saw the 2020 final suspended until this April, so as of this moment, he is still the reigning cup winning manager.

Two cup finals in the same competition in the space of two weeks really would make a pub quiz question for the ages should he complete the task against a side who, since he broke his duck, now seems to have the Indian sign over.

Ex-Valencia and Villarreal coach Marcelino Garcia Toral has met with Arsenal officials over the vacant permanent manager’s role at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Unai Emery at the end of November, following a dismal run of results across all competitions.

Emery’s assistant Freddie Ljungberg has been charged with overseeing first-team preparations on an interim basis while the club searches for their next boss, with a number of high profile candidates thought to be in the running.

Marcelino is considered to be one of the top contenders, as he looks for his first role since being dismissed by Valencia back in September.

The Spaniard spent two years at the Mestalla, masterminding a superb Copa del Rey triumph last season which saw his side beat La Liga champions Barca in the final.

According to ESPN, Marcelino is now very keen on the Arsenal job after holding talks with club officials in London this week, but he thinks his Spanish heritage could count against him after Emery’s ill-fated reign.

Marcelino wants to become Arsenal’s new manager

Marcelino is now the frontrunner to succeed his fellow countryman at Emirates Stadium, but it is understood that the Gunners want to give Ljungberg the chance to prove himself before they make a final decision.

ESPN reports that Marcelino would say yes if offered the chance to take over at Arsenal, having watched the team in action on several occasions this season.

It seems that the 54-year-old will have to wait to find out if he has been successful, with Ljungberg set to continue in charge throughout the remainder of the festive period.

The Swede picked up his first win at the helm on Monday night as Arsenal beat West Ham 3-1 at the London Stadium to move up to ninth in the Premier League table.

Speculation is currently rife over who Arsenal will appoint as Unai Emery’s long-term successor, with a report claiming Marcelino is in London amid rumours linking him with the job.

The Gunners opted to sack the Spanish tactician last month and appointed club legend Freddie Ljungberg as interim head coach.

Things haven’t gone well for them since that decision was made as they’ve been held by Norwich City and lost to Brighton at home last time out.

In turn, the search for a new boss may have been speeded up with a solution needed sooner rather than later to ensure that they can still salvage something from this campaign.

As noted by Football London, there is a possible hint that they could be set for talks with a target, as with speculation linking Marcelino with the Arsenal job, it has now been claimed that he has been spotted in London which could be an indication that potential talks with the Gunners or another club based in England for his next job are planned.

The 54-year-old has enjoyed a string of jobs with the top clubs in Spain in recent years, having had spells with Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia.

He won the Best Coach award in La Liga in the 2017/18 campaign, while he then led Valencia to the Copa del Rey last season.

With that in mind, he perhaps has the credentials to be considered a genuine solution for Arsenal as they look for a manager capable of bringing experience to the table to steady the ship and get them back on track to achieve their objectives.

Time will tell if Marcelino ticks all the right boxes for the hierarchy, and whether or not his reported trip to London has anything to do with speaking with the Premier League giants to seal a return to management in the coming weeks.

According to Goal, intermediaries working on Arsenal’s behalf have made contact with former Valencia boss Marcelino following the sacking of Unai Emery.

Goal add that this isn’t Marcelino’s first offer to return to the touchline since his sacking by the La Liga outfit. The ex-Spain Under-21s international has reportedly rejected the chance to manage both Sporting Lisbon and Everton in recent months.

Emery was given his marching orders this morning following Arsenal’s defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League last night.

The Gunners have been on a dismal run of form lately and they look miles away from re-establishing themselves as a top four side in the Premier League.

Does Marcelino have what it takes to be a success in north London?

The Gunners have been linked with several names today following Emery’s departure, former Juventus boss Max Allegri seems to be the most experienced manager that’s out of work right now.

However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Allegri has turned down the chance to manage Arsenal as he’s keen to complete a full year’s sabbatical and return to football next season.

There was some shock in the football world following Marcelino’s recent departure from Valencia. talkSPORT have claimed that the Spaniard was the most loved boss at Mestalla since Rafa Benitez.

The 54-year-old inspired Valencia to an iconic Copa Del Rey victory over Barcelona in the club’s 100th acting year last season.

Could this Spaniard fare better at the Emirates Stadium than Emery did?

Valencia have today announced that they’ve sacked their manager Marcelino, in what could end up being a boost for Chelsea as they meet in the Champions League next week.

Valencia have issued a statement on their official site confirming Marcelino’s departure, in what seems like a pretty rash and surprising move so early on in the season.

MORE: Announcement soon: Chelsea star signs new contract in much-needed boost for Frank Lampard

The Spanish giants are yet to even start their Champions League campaign, and now face huge uncertainty going into their visit to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

While it may be that the club’s players will respond well to their boss’ departure, as can sometimes be the case, one imagines it will mainly benefit Frank Lampard and co. as they’ll be in a more stable state before the game.

Chelsea are first back in Premier League action this weekend as they take on Wolves away on Saturday afternoon, but can then focus on getting off to a good start upon their return to Europe’s top club competition.

The Blues were only in the Europa League last season, though they made the most of it by winning the competition, while their final league finish of third in the table was also enough to book them a place in this season’s Champions League.

One of Arsenal’s brightest academy prospects has decided to leave the Gunners and join La Liga giants Valencia. Should the club have done more to keep the ace?

England Under-18s ace Yunus Musah confirmed his exit from Premier League giants Arsenal yesterday. The ace has decided to join La Liga side Valencia after his contract with the Gunners came to and end.

According to The Sun, the creative midfielder who was born in New York, rejected a scholarship offer from Arsenal to instead sign a two-year deal with the La Liga outfit.

Football.London have also reported that Valencia offered the talented youngster a much clearer path to the first-team.

Musah was phenomenal for Arsenal’s Under-18s side last season and the ace was a big reason why the Gunners lifted the youth Premier League trophy.

Musah scored five goals and registered three assists in 17 appearances last season.

The ace thanked Arsenal on Instagram before expressing his excitement over the move to Spain:

According to the FA’s official website, Musah has just been named in England’s Under-18s squad for the first time. The ace has previously been capped for the Young Lions at Under-15s through to Under-17s level.

If the 16-year-old can impress for Valencia’s youth teams and even win himself some opportunities in the first-team, it’s likely that he’ll be fast-tracked through England’s ranks.

Should Arsenal have done more to try and keep this talented youngster at the club?

One of Newcastle highest-profile defenders is being courted by Valencia, the La Liga side are eyeing a move for the ace as an alternative to Napoli star Elseid Hysaj.

According to Spanish outlet Super Deporte, Valencia are eyeing alternatives to Napoli star Elseid Hysaj and Newcastle ace Javier Manquillo is on their shortlist.

Valencia are in need of a signing at right-back following the five-month injury to Cristiano Piccini, the La Liga side were keen on a loan move for Hysaj but Napoli are insisting that a purchase option of €18m is mandatory – something that Los Ches aren’t keen on.

This is the only sticking point of the deal, with the report highlighting that personal terms with the Albanian have been agreed.

Another reason why Valencia have changed their stance on Hysaj’s signing is that Piccini is out for five months – and while this is a serious injury it doesn’t warrant a large investment at right-back.

Having Piccini and Hysaj on their books wouldn’t be a good business move.

The alternative signing of Manquillo would make a great deal of sense given that he’s Spanish and is used to the country’s style of play.

newcastle-steve-bruce
Newcastle would be left without quality competition at full-back if Manquillo was to be sold.

Manquillo came through the ranks at Atletico Madrid after being released by Real Madrid as a youngster, the full-back established himself as a prospect and was loaned out to Liverpool in the 2014/15 season.

Manquillo was loaned to England once again in 2016/17 as he joined Sunderland, after their relegation the ace joined rivals Newcastle on a permanent deal from Atleti.

Manquillo started Newcastle’s first game of the season against Arsenal but has since fallen behind summer signing Emil Krafth.

It would be risky of Newcastle to sell Manquillo now that the English transfer window is closed, the former Spain Under-21s star is a versatile option in defence – being comfortable on the left and right side and in a traditional or wing-back role.
