Manchester United have reportedly stalled in talks over the potential transfer of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte, so are looking at the likes of Atalanta star Ederson and other alternatives.

The Brazilian has impressed in his time in Serie A, as well as in last season’s Europa League as he played a part in Atalanta emerging as surprise winners of the competition.

Ederson is now being linked with Man Utd by HITC, who also report that Premier League duo Joao Gomes and Danilo, of Wolves and Nottingham Forest, respectively, also being considered.

Still, the report notes that one issue with Ederson is that Atlanta are unlikely to sell another key player this summer, with Teun Koopmeiners a top target for Juventus.

There are some other fine players out there, however, and it shouldn’t be hard to find someone who’d be quite a considerable upgrade on the ageing and under-performing Casemiro.

Ederson transfer: What else has been said about the Atalanta midfielder?

Ederson to Manchester United or Liverpool?

Ederson’s fine form has also previously seen him linked with Liverpool by Give Me Sport, while Fabrizio Romano also spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside about the Reds’ interest in the 25-year-old, which seemingly never got anywhere particularly advanced.

“Liverpool made contact with his (Ederson’s) agents weeks ago but never started any negotiation, they didn’t send a bid so far, there are no talks ongoing at this stage,” Romano said.

“We have to see if they will include Ederson in their shortlist or not, it’s really early for this and there are no meaningful changes to the situation so far. Atalanta, meanwhile, don’t want to lose both Ederson and Koopmeiners.”

Meanwhile, speaking in an interview with AS, Ederson admitted he’s curious about the possibility of playing in the Premier League.

“I don’t know, I’ve thought about it a lot, I like Italy, I’m well adapted, but I’m curious about the Premier League, so I don’t know,” Ederson said.

“I’m still growing, so I don’t know if I’ll stay in Italy, I think I still have more to prove. If I go somewhere else, then too. I will continue to grow.”

Manchester United are working on alternative midfield targets after walking away from a deal to sign Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red Devils’ refusal to meet Paris Saint-Germain’s £51 million asking price for the Uruguay international has seen them recently leave negotiations in favour of pursuing more cost-effective targets (David Ornstein).

Joao Gomes wanted by Man United as Casemiro exit rumours intensify

And according to a report from Football Transfers, one of the players under consideration by INEOS and sporting director Dan Ashworth is Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.

The 23-year-old, previously of Brazilian side Flamengo, has been at Molineux for 18 months. He enjoyed a decent individual campaign last season, and, with his tenacious style of play which includes playing as a number eight or six, continues to live up to his “The Pitbull” nickname.

Joao Gomes is a transfer target for Man United.

Gomes’ rise in English football would have come as little surprise to manager Gary O’Neil.

Gary O’Neil won’t want to lose ‘very, very talented’ Gomes

Speaking to the club’s website about the South American in June, the 41-year-old boss, who was appointed Wolves boss 12 months ago, said: “There’s a lot of players who’ll speak a similar language and his English is good, and he’s a hungry, humble, honest, hardworking kid who is very, very talented.”

However, irrespective of O’Neil’s admiration, Gomes is now viewed as a possible replacement for Casemiro, who remains heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. There is a belief that the midfielder would be available for £38 million — a figure far less than Urgate.

Elsewhere, there is also uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of Scott McTominay. The Scotland international is a target for Fulham and could still leave before the close of the window.

Gomes, also linked with Liverpool, is a contender to replace either, or both, departing United midfielders. The Brazilian, born in 2001, has up to five years left on his contract.

Liverpool are still in the process to decide what they want in the summer transfer window.

The new manager Arne Slot is busy with the club hierarchy in identifying their targets this summer.

So far, the Reds have not made any signings this summer but that could soon change with the Merseyside club looking for fresh faces to strengthen the level of their squad.

Transfer expert Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Liverpool really like Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes but that does not mean that the Reds will sign the Brazilian midfielder.

Jacobs has claimed that it is more likely that the Premier League giants will sign a new centre-back and wide player than a new midfielder this summer.

In his GIVEMESPORT Transfer Mailbag, Jacobs stated that Gomes is a target for Liverpool and called the transfer ‘one to watch’ going forward.

“Midfield is not as high on their list of priorities as a centre-back and wide player,” Jacobs disclosed.

“But, I don’t think we can entirely rule it out and Liverpool really like Joao Gomes as well, so that could be one to watch in the coming months. But for now, midfield is not the priority.”

Joao Gomes Liverpool Wolves
Joao Gomes to Liverpool?

Liverpool revamped their midfield last summer under former manager Jurgen Klopp, adding Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai after the departure of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner.

However, the Reds midfield still struggled last season and failed to protect the defense, making their back line weak and exposed to the opposition attack.

Signing a midfielder is not a priority for Liverpool

Slot wants to change that this summer but first and foremost he is looking to add a new defender and a winger as reported by Jacobs.

After breaking into the team earlier this year, Gomes started all four of Brazil’s Copa America matches.

The midfielder has progressed well in the last two years and his move to the Premier League has worked wonders for his development.

Manchester United “really like” Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes according to journalist Ben Jacobs, as the club look to bolster their midfield options this summer.

With the managerial situation at Old Trafford sorted United are now looking to strengthen a squad which despite winning the FA Cup finished eighth in the Premier League and got knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage.

United need to strengthen in several areas, but with a reported starting budget of as little as £50m they will need to sell to significantly increase it.

United really like Joao Gomes

The Red Devils are set to sell Casemiro this summer with the Brazilian attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League, whilst it appears unlikely Sofyan Amrabat’s move will be made permanent after his loan spell last season.

United will therefore need to dip into the market to bolster their ranks in the middle of the park and they have recently been linked with West Ham’s Edson Alvarez and Gomes of Wolves.

Jacobs has been speaking about United’s pursuit of a midfielder, with the club looking to target players with Premier League experience.

Joao Gomes celebrates scoring for Wolves.
Man United are believed to be admirers of Gomes.

“We also know that Joao Neves, the young, 19-year-old midfielder, is appreciated by Manchester United and also Arsenal, but Benfica expect a €120m release clause to be paid, so that one is a bit more problematic,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

“There’s Joao Gomes at Wolves, another name that Manchester United really like, and there’s Edson Alvarez at West Ham.

“So what we’re sort of seeing predominantly is a recruitment approach in a lot of positions at Manchester United towards proven Premier League quality.”

Gomes joined Wolves in January 2023 from Brazilian club Flamengo, and he made 38 appearances in all competition last season, scoring two goals.

The 23-year-old is under contract at Molineux until 2028 having signed a five year deal when he arrived at the club, and is believed to be available for around £40m.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly considering cashing in on several of their key players this summer to boost their transfer funds, sources have told Football Insider.

Following financial difficulties that forced the club to sell important players last summer, Wolves may face a similar scenario this year. Pedro Neto, Max Kilman, Joao Gomes, and Rayan Ait-Nouri are among the players likely to attract significant interest from other clubs.

All four players are under contract at Molineux until at least 2026, which positions Wolves well to demand substantial transfer fees. The club aims to sell at least one of their star players for big money, providing manager Gary O’Neil with more resources to reinforce the squad.

Wolverhampton Wanderers could cash in on Pedro Neto, Joao Gomes, Max Kilman and Rayan Ait-Nouri this summer

Wolves’ Key Players who could be flogged this summer

Pedro Neto

The 24-year-old forward has been a standout performer this season, registering nine assists and playing a crucial role in Wolves’ push into the top half of the Premier League. His performances have caught the attention of both Manchester City and Liverpool, with reports suggesting his fee could exceed £60 million. Neto, who joined Wolves from Braga in 2019, has shown significant progression and is expected to be a hot commodity this summer.

Max Kilman

The 26-year-old defender has been a reliable presence at the back for Wolves. Kilman’s consistency and defensive prowess have made him an attractive target for clubs looking to bolster their defense. His current contract situation means Wolves can command a high fee for his services.

Joao Gomes

The Brazilian midfielder, known for his energy and tenacity, has quickly become a fan favourite at Molineux. Gomes’ all-action style has drawn interest from several clubs, and Wolves could capitalise on this by selling him for a substantial sum.

Rayan Ait-Nouri

The young Algerian left-back has impressed with his attacking capabilities and defensive solidity. Ait-Nouri’s potential and current form make him a valuable asset, and his sale could bring in significant funds for Wolves.

Wolverhampton Wanderers will have to work on a tight budget

Wolves have already made moves to strengthen their squad, securing the permanent signing of midfielder Tommy Doyle from Manchester City for £4.3 million. This proactive approach indicates the club’s intent to reinvest wisely and build a competitive team for the upcoming season.

Of course, Gary O’Neil’s team have already been linked with pending free agents such as Che Adams ahead of the summer. This will have to be their approach unless they can free up funds with the sale of key players.

Manchester United reportedly have six transfer targets in mind for the summer, including some big names from the Premier League and the Bundesliga.

The Red Devils need to majorly revamp their squad after a difficult season, with Erik ten Hag’s future also looking likely to be the subject of some debate, while the club will likely have a long list of current players that they’d be prepared to sell.

According to the Daily Mirror, a long list of big names could leave Old Trafford this summer, while Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is one of their targets from the Premier League, along with Wolves duo Pedro Neto and Joao Gomes.

MUFC could also look to raid the German top flight for some star names, with the Mirror mentioning Bayer Leverkusen pair Jeremie Frimpong and Edmond Tapsoba as being on their radar, along with Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen.

Jarrad Branthwaite has been linked with Manchester United

Man Utd transfers – what can we expect from the Red Devils under INEOS?

United have made a lot of big mistakes in the transfer marker in recent years, with a lack of a coherent recruitment strategy seeing them splash the cash on a long list of flops since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.

Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Antony are just some of the big names who’ve failed to live up to their potential despite arriving for big fees, and the club will need to do better this year if they are to become serious top four contenders again.

Jeremie Frimpong is also on Man United’s radar this summer

Branthwaite, Neto and Gomes look like smart options to come in as they’ve already proven themselves in England, while Leverkusen duo Frimpong and Tapsoba could be fine options as well as they’ve tasted title success in the Bundesliga this term.

It will be interesting to see if INEOS and new key figures like Jason Wilcox can see United improve when it comes to major transfer decisions this summer.

Could Amorim to Liverpool boost Arsenal’s Gyokeres transfer hopes?

Viktor Gyokeres’ agent Hasan Cetinkaya has spoken publicly to admit that his client’s future at Sporting Lisbon could be tied to the future of manager Ruben Amorim. We know Amorim is currently looking like the leading candidate for the Liverpool job, with contacts taking place even if a deal is not done yet.

Gyokeres, who has had a superb first season with Sporting with 50 goal/assist contributions, had many proposals last summer from different clubs, but Amorim was a key factor for him to join Sporting. So obviously, with Amorim probably leaving this summer, it could mean the same for Gyokeres.

Ousmane Diomande is another player who’s been the subject of speculation linking him with top clubs. We’ll see what happens – for sure Sporting will fight to keep their stars but it will depends on the proposals. For Gyokeres, they insist on clubs paying his €100m release clause. As previously reported, the Swedish striker is one of the names on Arsenal’s list, they really like the player, but still need to decide internally what kind of striker they will prioritise this summer.

Ivan Toney transfer fee depends on how many suitors he has this summer

Another striker we know has been on Arsenal’s radar is Ivan Toney, and there’s been fresh speculation again about the Brentford star, who could be one to watch this summer as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Ivan Toney transfer stories continue…

There was interest in Toney in January but at that time Brentford were insisting only on crazy proposals to let him go, and so a deal didn’t materialise. For the summer it could be different, and his price tag could be lower, but my understanding is it would not be quite as low as the £30-40m some reports have stated.

I don’t like to deny what my other colleagues are claiming as anyone has their sources and information. Still, my information is not the same, in this moment I’m told Brentford want more than this reported fee. My understanding is also that there are still no talks taking place with any club, so for sure the number of clubs involved in the race will be key to understand the final price.

What’s the truth behind the Joao Gomes Arsenal transfer links?

Another player being linked with Arsenal by some outlets is Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. Of course it’s normal to see stories like this, and we only recently also saw rumours about Manchester United wanting the Brazil international.

My understanding remains that there’s still nothing concrete for Gomes at the moment. Every week there’s a new team being linked in the media, almost all of them… he’s being scouted by a number of top clubs as I’ve mentioned before, but nothing has entered into concrete stages yet.

With United and Gomes, we’ll have to see what they decide to do in midfield this summer, and much of that should become clearer once they have their new directors and structure in place and decide their strategy for the next transfer window.

Rodrygo nearly joined Liverpool, but nothing is happening now

It was another fantastic performance by Rodrygo for Real Madrid in the Champions League this week, and I can say that the club are super happy with him even as Kylian Mbappe and Endrick are expected to be on their way to the Bernabeu this summer.

Rodrygo also spoke about having the opportunity to join Liverpool earlier in his career, but there’s nothing more to say about interest from the Reds now – Rodrygo is obviously well known by everyone these days as he’s a superstar scoring goals.

I’m sure probably all the clubs in the world would like to sign him, but there’s zero happening on that front at this stage. His full focus on Real Madrid, with a new deal signed a few months ago which includes a €1bn release clause.

In other news…

Xabi Alonso – He may be staying at Bayer Leverkusen this summer, but has Xabi Alonso hinted at a future Premier League move? “You never know…At the moment I have enough on my plate to think about, but I’m still young as a coach and for sure it’s a nice opportunity.”

Riccardo Calafiori – Juventus have already started contacts to sign Riccardo Calafiori after the 21-year-old defender’s strong form for Bologna. FC Basel will receive 40% future sale over €4m, so this is a factor; but Juve are pushing as they want Calafiori and he’s keen on the move.

Bento – Despite this talented Brazilian goalkeeper being linked with Chelsea, I’m not aware of contacts with Chelsea so far, let’s see what they decide to do but at this point, nothing is concrete. Chelsea still have to decide what they want to do with GKs in general having also Kepa and Slonina set to return from their loan deals this summer.

Arsenal and Manchester United have been given an update on the Joao Gomes transfer situation as the Wolves midfielder continues to attract links with a number of top clubs.

The impressive Brazil international has caught the eye with his recent performances for Wolves, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see him earn a big move sooner rather than later.

It’s also pretty clear that both Arsenal and Man Utd could do with strengthening in midfield this summer, but is Gomes likely to be on his way out of Molineux?

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, Fabrizio Romano provided some insight into Gomes’ situation, suggesting that things are still not really as concrete as other media outlets may have claimed.

Gomes transfer: Will he be on the move to Arsenal or Man United?

Discussing Gomes’ future, Romano said: “Another player being linked with Arsenal by some outlets is Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. Of course it’s normal to see stories like this, and we only recently also saw rumours about Manchester United wanting the Brazil international.

Joao Gomes to Arsenal or Manchester United?

“My understanding remains that there’s still nothing concrete for Gomes at the moment. Every week there’s a new team being linked in the media, almost all of them… he’s being scouted by a number of top clubs as I’ve mentioned before, but nothing has entered into concrete stages yet.

Arsenal fans will no doubt hope a talent like Gomes can come in, potentially to replace the ageing Jorginho or the injury-prone Thomas Partey.

United, meanwhile, surely need to bring in an upgrade on struggling performers like Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in midfield, while loan signing Sofyan Amrabat surely won’t be staying at Old Trafford permanently.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to try a summer transfer window move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer, with the 23-year-old also on Manchester United’s radar.

Gomes has impressed in the Premier League in recent times, and it makes sense that he’s now being linked with bigger clubs as he’s surely ready to move up a level next season.

Man Utd were recently linked with a potential £40million move for Gomes in a report from the Daily Mirror, while Arsenal are now said to be showing an even stronger interest, according to O Dia, as cited and translated by Sport Witness.

Gomes could be a good fit for Arsenal, who surely need to make some changes in midfield this summer amid some concern over Thomas Partey and Jorginho.

Jorginho is not getting any younger and might not be a long-term option for Mikel Arteta’s side, while Partey has plenty of quality but a very poor recent injury record.

Joao Gomes to Arsenal or Manchester United?

Gomes transfer: Can Arsenal beat Man Utd to the Brazilian?

Gomes looks like he could surely strengthen United as well, with the Red Devils surely needing a long-term replacement for the ageing and out-of-form Casemiro, while one imagines Sofyan Amrabat won’t be staying at the club permanently after joining on loan.

Charles Watts has recently spoken exclusively to CaughtOffside about the midfielders Arsenal like, mentioning big names like Douglas Luiz, Martin Zubimendi and Amadou Onana, but Gomes certainly looks like he could be another fine option in that position.

And, if it were to come down to a choice of Arsenal or United, Gomes would surely choose the Emirates Stadium over Old Trafford due to the current trajectory of these respective projects at the moment, with Arteta turning the Gunners into a real powerhouse while MUFC are still a long way from being the force they used to be.

According to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, Manchester United have made Joao Gomes of Wolverhampton Wanderers their “top target” to bolster their midfield this summer.

The Red Devils are reportedly looking to bolster their squad in the forthcoming window in an attempt to improve their fortunes for the upcoming season after suffering a disastrous campaign this season.

Erik ten Hag’s main goal is supposedly to revamp the defense, but he also wants to strengthen the midfield by bringing in a new player.

Gomes is apparently on their radar as well, although a few names—Amadou Onana, Joao Neves, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall—have also been linked to a transfer to Old Trafford.

According to Jacobs, who was speaking on GiveMeSport, Man Utd are looking to bolster their midfield strength and have identified Gomes as a “top target.”

Man United’s top midfield target named

The reporter does note that the Red Devils’ possible addition to this position will rely on departures, since Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Scott McTominay’s futures are still unknown.

Joao Gomes to Man United?

Jacobs said:

“I think Joao Gomes is among Manchester United’s top midfield targets. The first thing to say is that the midfield will depend, at least in that position on Casemiro, on whether he departs. There is firm Saudi interest.

“Christian Eriksen has already said that he’s unhappy with his game time, so potentially he’s also outgoing. We know there’ll be interest in Scott McTominay, but Manchester United value him. However, he’s also been linked with various clubs for the last few windows.

“So, naturally, Manchester United will look to strengthen that area of midfield if the departures allow them to generate squad space, wage space and funds to do so.”
