West Ham United’s capture of Jean-Clair Todibo could open the door for up to three of the club’s existing centre-backs to leave the club, according to reports.

The Hammers announced the £35m transfer of Todibo from Ligue 1 side Nice on Saturday, reportedly beating Italian giants Juventus to his signature.

Todibo is the seventh signing of what has been a very busy summer for West Ham, who have also acquired Max Kilman, Luis Guilherme, Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez and Wes Foderingham as they heavily back new manager Julen Lopetegui.

However, with so many arrivals, departures will also surely follow.

Veteran defender Angelo Ogbonna has already been released, but the Italian could be joined through the London Stadium exit door by three more centre-backs as the Hammers look to purge the squad ahead of the Lopetegui era.

According to HITC, Kurt Zouma is closing in on a transfer to United Arab Emirates side Shabab Al-Ahli.

Their report also states that Nayef Aguerd and Konstantinos Mavropanos could be up for sale this summer as West Ham look to trim the fat on their wage bill.

With both Todibo and Kilman on the books, it’s hard to see the aforementioned trio getting the game time they desire but while it’s hard to see all three leaving in one window, it wouldn’t be surprising to see at least one or two sold.

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice.

The 24-year-old arrives at the London Stadium on a season-long loan with an option to buy at £35m (per Sky Sports), which is up from the originally £27m agreement earlier this summer which was scuppered due to interest from Juventus.

Todibo brings plenty of pedigree having been capped twice at senior level for the French national team, while he’s represented the likes of Barcelona, Benfica and Schalke at club level.

“I am really excited to be signing for West Ham United,” the centre-back told the West Ham official website. “It is a dream come true to play in the Premier League, the best league in the world.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me, at a club with huge ambition, who want to really make progress under the new head coach.

“It feels like the right time to be coming to West Ham, in the heart of London, with an amazing, passionate fan-base. I’m so excited to pull on the West Ham shirt, and play at the London Stadium in the Premier League.”

Hammers technical director Tim Steidten added: “It’s no secret that Jean-Clair is a player we’ve been tracking for some time, so we’re delighted to have got this signing over the line ahead of the start of the new season.

“He’s got proven pedigree in European football, especially in France, where he has shone in recent years, showing all of his qualities as one of the finest ball-playing centre-halves in Ligue 1.

“There was huge interest from across Europe for his signature this summer, and we’re once again indebted to the board for backing us to bring in a player who is approaching the peak years of his career.”

For years now West Ham United have been the Premier League’s proverbial sleeping giant, but technical director, Tim Steidten, is waking the East Londoners up in a big way.

A battle of wills that developed between the German and David Moyes last season was only going to see one winner and, for once, the Hammers made the right decision.

For all of Moyes’ success at the London Stadium – lest we forget he brought the club its first major trophy in over four decades – his was a style of play that had begun to look stale and moribund in today’s game.

Tim Steidten has worked wonders for West Ham

Steidten had already proved his worth in the transfer market by then, landing Edson Alvarez, Mo Kudus and others last summer, but in the current transfer window, the 45-year-old has surpassed himself.

Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Guido Rodriguez, Niclas Fullkrug, Luis Guilherme have all put pen to paper, with an announcement expected soon on Jean-Clair Todibo and Aaron Wan-Bissaka hopefully added before the deadline.

Tim Steidten has made some brilliant signings for West Ham
Tim Steidten has made some brilliant signings for West Ham

That’s a sensational haul in anyone’s book, let alone for a West Ham side that are not even in Europe don’t forget.

If each player can reach their expected level, then the Champions League in 2025/26 will no longer be a pipe dream but a realistic aim.

With Julen Lopetegui having replaced Moyes at the helm too, Hammers fans can expect a return to the free-flowing attacking football that was always the hallmark of Irons teams of yesteryear.

If the season does end successfully for the East Londoners, it’ll be the Spaniard that takes the plaudits, but no one should forget that without the nous of Tim Steidten, the club would likely be ambling into another campaign in hope rather than expectation.

West Ham United have been the busiest Premier League club this summer along with Aston Villa.

The Hammers have strengthened all the positions in their squad after the arrival of new manager Julen Lopetegui.

The east Londoners are going through a transition period after the departure of David Moyes from the club at the end of last season.

Having already signed players like Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Guilherme, Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez and Wes Foderingham, they are keen to add more quality to their squad, particularly in the defensive position.

One of the players they have targeted for a long time is now keen on a move to the London Stadium.

According to journalist Santi Aouna, Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo has decided to join West Ham.

He wrote:

“Jean-Clair Todibo HAS DECIDED TO JOIN WEST HAM. The Hammers are now trying to reach a TOTAL deal with the player.

“An agreement already existed between Nice and West Ham, as revealed exclusively several weeks ago.

“Juventus have already started looking for other alternatives in defense.”

Jean-Clair Todibo West Ham
Jean-Clair Todibo to West Ham?

The defender looked like heading to Juventus but the Hammers appear to have won the race to sign the French defender.

An agreement was already in place between Nice and the Premier League club but now the player has been convinced by the project at the London Stadium and he wants to become a part of it.

Italian giants Juventus have started looking for alternatives in the market and their deal to sign the Nice defender is now off.

West Ham United are set to continue their transfer business

It is going to be another statement signing from the Hammers as they beat Italian giants Juventus to the signature of the player.

He is going to become a part of their defense straight-away and partner Kilman at the heart of the West Ham defense.

This would be a much needed addition to their squad as they conceded goals for fun last season.

Only the three relegated Premier League teams conceded more goals than the Hammers, which shows their need of defensive stability.

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten is attempting to hijack Juventus’ deal for Jean-Clair Todibo with the Premier League club already having a €40m agreement in place with OGC Nice.

The Hammers have been interested in the defender all summer as Julen Lopetegui has been keen to strengthen his centre-back options at the London club, however, Todibo has had his heart set on only moving to Juventus.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 24-year-old’s wish was close to becoming reality on Wednesday as the transfer journalist reported that the Italian giants were nearing an agreement with Nice for Todibo with talks having entered the final stages.

A meeting took place on Wednesday between Juventus and the French star’s camp, with it being believed that the Turin outfit were ready to submit an improved bid to Nice for their centre-back.

Juve have been in talks with the French club for weeks but have not received the green light to complete a deal for Todibo. That left the door open for other clubs to pounce and on Thursday, West Ham’s Tim Steidten made his move.

West Ham attempting to hijack Juventus’ deal for Jean-Clair Todibo

West Ham’s Steidten has travelled to Nice to try and hijack Juventus’ deal for Todibo with an agreement already reached between the two clubs for the centre-back.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the Hammers are ready to pay €40m plus a sell-on clause for the 24-year-old and are trying to book a medical for Friday to get the deal over the line. This would be incredible work from the West Ham director as Todibo is a player Lopetegui has been very keen on.

West Ham have already seen a central defender in Max Kilman arrive this summer and it looks like the Englishman could be about to get a new partner.

There could still be another twist in this story but at present, it seems that Todibo is on his way to London and fans of the Irons have Steidten to thank for that.

Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo is closing in on a move to Juventus with the deal said to be at the “final stages” after a meeting took place on Wednesday.

The centre-back has been expected to leave the Ligue 1 club this summer and his preference for his next club has always been Juventus. His wish is very close to becoming reality as Fabrizio Romano reports that the Italian giants are close to reaching an agreement with Nice for Todibo as the deal has entered the final stages.

A meeting took place on Wednesday between Juve and the French star’s camp and it was clearly a positive one.

Todibo has told Nice that he only wants to join Juventus this summer as the Serie A outfit are ready to submit an improved bid for the 24-year-old.

The centre-back will be a great addition to Thiago Motta’s squad as the new Juve boss prepares to start a new era at the Turin club. Douglas Luiz, Khephren Thuram and Juan Cabal have already arrived at the Allianz Stadium, while the Italian outfit continues to work on key additions such as Todibo and Teun Koopmeiners.

Jean-Clair Todibo news a blow for West Ham

Julen Lopetegui has been eager to strengthen his defence at West Ham ahead of the 2024/25 campaign and Todibo was a key part of his plan.

According to Sky Sports, the Premier League club agreed a loan with Nice last month which also contained a £26.8m (€32m) option to buy clause, however, the Hammers never reached an agreement with the player.

West Ham have already seen a central defender in Max Kilman arrive this summer and only time will tell if another walks through the door at the London Stadium before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

West Ham United are looking to sign a new defender this summer.

The Hammers have already added Max Kilman to their squad but they are looking for a new centre-back to partner with the former Wolves captain.

The east Londoners struggled at the back last season and after the three relegated teams, they conceded the most goals in the Premier League.

Manager Julen Lopetegui has realised that the defense needs an overhaul and he is working towards signing his transfer targets.

According to GiveMeSport, Toulouse defender Logan Costa and Red Bull Salzburg star Oumar Solet have been identified by the Hammers as their defensive targets.

The Premier League club have shifted focus to the above mentioned players because they have failed in their pursuit of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

The Hammers have signed Kilman, Luis Guilherme, Wes Foderingham and Crysencio Summerville this summer while Niclas Fullkrug and Guido Rodriguez are on their way to the London Stadium as well.

It has been a summer of change at the club that started with the departure of former manager David Moyes.

The report has mentioned that Juventus are involved in talks to sign Todibo from Nice, making it difficult for the Hammers to compete with the Italian giants.

The player is keen on a move to the Serie A and that is why the Hammers have identified other targets to strengthen their defense.

West Ham are still waiting to see if they can sign Todibo from the French club but their interest comes from hope rather than confidence.

The Hammers had earlier agreed a deal to sign the player on loan with an option to buy him permanently for £27million but they failed in talks to seal the deal, allowing Juventus to enter the race.

Sergi Roberto to decide upon new club… as Barça wait for official bids for Vitor Roque

I’m not aware of advanced talks with Premier League clubs at the moment for Sergi Roberto.

The only concrete thing I’ve reported is about Ajax. They spoke to the player, but he wanted to consider his options before deciding.

It will take some days for him to make his decision and then pick his favourite option.

He’s open to any league; it’s more about the project.

Barça have still not received any official bid for Vitor Roque. The only approach was from Al Hilal but the player turned down the initial approach. Let’s see if they will return.

For Barça, his exit could only be possible if they get almost same transfer fee as they invested to sign him from Athletico Paranaense, around €30m plus €31m in add-ons.

Conor Gallagher’s Atleti decision will arrive in the next few days

Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have total agreement on the package for Conor Gallagher; €40m.

In June and also recently Conor Gallagher rejected an important new contract proposal from Chelsea, and remember that he only has one year left on his contract.

He said no even though it was going to bring him in line with the best earners in Chelsea’s midfield.

A deal back in June was almost done between Chelsea and Aston Villa, but the player rejected that too.

Now he has the possibility to join Atletico Madrid so let’s see what Conor wants to do. In the next hours or days, everything will be decided and I’ll keep you posted as always.

Napoli negotiating for Lukaku as Osimhen talks progress slowly

I broke the story about the talks that reopened between Chelsea and Napoli for Victor Osimhen. It was something that we shared on Monday, and then on Tuesday the big bomb from Osimhen’s agent.

The stance as of today is that the player doesn’t want to consider a loan move unless it’s with an obligation to buy as this is then considered to be like a permanent transfer.

Chelsea and Napoli have been in contact during this week and they remain in contact because Napoli keep working on the deal for Romelu Lukaku.

Napoli have an agreement with Lukaku and so we have to see what happens between the two clubs. I’m hearing that this week no big changes are expected. All parties have decided to take their time to think about the strategy, to think about the situation and then understand how and if they want to proceed.

Meanwhile, there are no doubts that Antonio Conte wants Lukaku, and Lukaku wants to go to Napoli. For Osimhen, we’ll have to wait and see.

Mikel Merino to Arsenal is really, really close

Let me say that Arsenal are really closing in on the deal for Mikel Merino and let me clarify that the package is going to be something around €30m.

We’ll understand in the structure of the deal in the next days, but the agreement between Arsenal and Real Sociedad is really, really close. Everything is proceeding to the final stages.

Let me also mention another Mikel; Arteta.

We know he is discussing a contract extension that Arsenal expect to be done soon. The Spaniard is really influential in the market for Arsenal, together with Edu Gaspar, and Arteta is working a lot behind the scenes in terms of suggesting moves.

It was he who wanted Riccardo Calafiori as a priority target, and given that he’s now at Arsenal, the club clearly did an excellent job.

Arteta is also behind this story for Mikel Merino because he knows the player so well, and has been monitoring him for a long time.

Of course, people from the board and the scouting scouting department at Arsenal also believe that signing Merino is a perfect opportunity. Merino is therefore expected to be Arsenal’s second signing of this summer’s transfer window.

Despite some fairly strong rumours too, honestly, I have no concrete updates on Viktor Gyökeres.

No issue with the physical condition of Leny Yoro

I’m receiving many, many questions on the situation of Leny Yoro and his injury, and though Manchester United will clarify the situation in detail, I can confirm that the expectation of the club is for the player to be out for some weeks.

The fracture in his foot is expected to be confirmed, and we will see how long he will be out for. Probably the end of September or something like that, but it will depend on the recovery process so it could be even longer.

Let me clarify some things too.

First of all, Manchester United are regularly updated with the physical situation of their players, and will have all the information they need on the physical situation of Leny Yoro.

They’re not worried in the long term, he’s just been really unlucky in that friendly, and reports of other clubs pulling out of the race for Yoro because of the physical conditions of the player is something that is absolutely not the case. I can guarantee that the medical results were absolutely excellent. All the clubs wanted to sign Leny Yoro; Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

It’s not a muscular injury, it’s just something that’s happened, so Man United remain really calm.

They’ll keep supporting the boy, and they are 100% percent sure that everything will be fine in the next weeks and months.

Man United already wanted to bring in one more centre back in any event, and this remains the plan.

Bayern want €50m guaranteed for Matthijs de Ligt, Man United insist on using add-ons, but talks continue. De Ligt is waiting for Man United, so it’s quite a clear position.

In other areas I’d still keep an eye out for a new midfielder and on Mazraoui who’s also waiting for United.

Still no Liverpool bid for Anthony Gordon

Something more, guys, because I already told you two or three days ago that the appreciation of Liverpool for Anthony Gordon remains strong.

As of today, there is still no bid from Liverpool to Newcastle, so we can’t talk about the negotiation and we can’t confirm the situation now.

What I can confirm, once again, is the appreciation of the player internally at Liverpool.

In several meetings that the club have had, the name of Anthony Gordon has been discussed, and he’s really highly rated. Liverpool believe he’s a top, top player.

Let’s see if Liverpool will reactivate this option in terms of talks with Newcastle, and let’s see what Newcastle want to do, because he’s a crucial player for them.

Now that the issue of Financial Fair Play is no longer there, there’s no pressure on the Magpies to sell.

Several clubs contacted by Wesley’s agentd

I’ve no confirmation about an official bid for Wesley at the moment.

Crystal Palace spoke to his agents, as did several clubs around Europe as his agents are discussing this opportunity with many clubs. Nothing is imminent now.

Despite links with West Ham, their full focus remains on Crysencio Summerville.

Juve clear front runners in Todibo race, West Ham waiting…

Juventus remain in negotiations for Jean-Clair Todibo and he wants Juventus as a priority. Talks are ongoing, let’s see what happens with the Bianconeri.

There have been rumours that West Ham could be back in the race, but they could only be an option if the deal with Juve collapses and that’s not the case now.

Juve are still on it, price is around €40m.

With almost a month left of the current transfer window, there’s still plenty of time for West Ham and their Premier League opponents to get some more deals across the line.

Though the Hammers have had more failures than successes in the market this summer, news from the past week should have all of the club’s fans excited.

A deal for Leeds United’s best player, Crysencio Summerville, is thought to be a formality, and it’s believed that Borussia Dortmund’s German centre-forward, Niclas Fullkrug, is open to a move to the London Stadium.

West Ham’s Todibo update

If Tim Steidten is able to land those two players on top of bringing in Max Kilman, Luis Guilherme and Wes Foderingham, the East Londoners will already have had a good window.

Were any more high profile stars to arrive, things could get even better for Julen Lopetegui.

One name that has done the rounds for a while now is Nice’s ex-Barcelona defender, Jean-Clair Todibo, and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, has a specific update that Hammers fans will want to hear.

West Ham target Jean-Clair Todibo reportedly wants to join Juventus.
West Ham target Jean-Clair Todibo reportedly wants to join Juventus.

“Juventus remain in negotiations for Jean-Clair Todibo and he wants Juventus as a priority. Talks are ongoing, let’s see what happens with the Bianconeri,” he told CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

“There have been rumours that West Ham could be back in the race, but they could only be an option if the deal with Juve collapses and that’s not the case now.

“Juve are still on it, price is around €40m.”

If technical director, Steidten, is doing his job well, then he’ll still have an iron in that particular fire whilst scouring the market for a more than able alternative.

It’s clear that West Ham are looking to strengthen in that area of the pitch and the club can’t leave things until the last knockings of the window and potentially leave themselves light.

Newcastle United’s new sporting director Paul Mitchell is believed to be a big fan of Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and the Englishman led talks for the defender last week but a deal is unlikely to happen.

The Premier League club are in the market for a new centre-back this summer as Sven Botman is set to miss the start of the 2024/25 campaign with an ACL injury. The Tyneside club have already signed Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer but Eddie Howe wants another.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Mitchell wanted to bring Todibo to Newcastle this summer but the French star has his heart set on a move to Italian giants Juventus.

Bailey spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about Newcastle’s approach for Todibo last week, saying: “Paul Mitchell led talks with Jean-Clair Todibo’s agent last week.

“They made an approach, but it has not progressed. The player wants to go to Juventus.

“At Newcastle’s end, not everyone at the club wants to sign Todibo. Paul Mitchell was the one pushing for him.”

Newcastle hoping to bring AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw to St James’ Park

Having failed to convince Todibo to move, Newcastle hope to get a deal done for AC Milan star Malick Thiaw over the coming weeks. The German defender is the leading candidate to arrive at St James’ Park for the centre-back role and would be a great addition to Howe’s squad.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport via TBR Football, the Magpies are believed to be weighing up whether to make a £25m bid for the Milan star or not.

Thiaw experienced an injury-hit campaign last time around but still managed to feature in 30 matches for AC Milan.

The centre-back has been with the Serie A giants since 2022 having joined from Schalke 04 and is contracted at the San Siro until 2027. Newcastle scouts have watched the player a lot in recent years and it is said that they have been impressed by Thiaw’s performances in the Champions League.

It remains to be seen if the Premier League club can get a deal done, but the German is certainly a player Howe needs.
