Southampton boss Russell Martin has spoken on their pursuit of Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho and said he’s a player the Saints like a lot.

Following promotion back to the Premier League last season Southampton have been busy in the market making a number of additions to their squad to give them the best chance of survival.

Among their new signings are striker Ben Brereton Diaz, and midfielders Flynn Downes and Adam Lallana.

Southampton want to sign Carvalho

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Sunday that Liverpool had rejected an offer from Southampton worth up to £15m for Carvalho and were unwilling to sanction another loan deal for the 21-year-old.

The report adds Carvalho wants to be a regular starter and any permanent offers will need to be higher than what the Saints offered.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Martin addressed Southampton’s pursuit of Carvalho and said he was a player the club like a lot.

Southampton have had a bid rejected for Carvalho.

“He is a player we have liked for a while. We spoke in January but couldn’t get it done. He is a player I admire and like,” he said.

It’s also thought Southampton are keeping an eye on Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley if they are unable to land the Portuguese.

Carvalho, who joined the Reds from Fulham in 2022 has impressed for Liverpool on their pre-season tour of America and opened the scoring in the 3-0 over Manchester United on Saturday.

He’s provided 29 goal contributions in 56 Championship appearances for both Fulham and Hull, but has only made 21 appearances for the Anfield outfit, in which he’s managed just three goals.

The attacking midfielder has so far failed to nail down a regular starting spot at Anfield and has had loan spells at RB Leipzig and Hull City where he impressed with nine goals and two assists from 20 appearances as Hull narrowly missed out on the play-offs in the last campaign.

Southampton manager Russell Martin’s job is dependent on the result of the promotion playoffs.

The first leg of the playoff semi-final against West Brom finished in a 0-0 draw at the Hawthorns Stadium.

The second leg is on Friday and Southampton will feel confident of beating them at home.

The winner will then face either Leeds United or Norwich City in the final at Wembley, which will be the promotion decider.

However, according to Daily Mail, if Saints fail to win promotion, manager Russell Martin’s job will be at stake.

Martin managed to lead his side to finish 4th, with 26 wins, 9 draws and 11 defeats.

To give perspective of how well Southampton performed, Ipswich Town who won direct promotion in 2nd place, had just 2 more wins. However, they lost only 6, and drew 12.

4 managers in 1.5 years at Southampton

Southampton had a disappointing season last year, which resulted in relegation, after an 11-year stint in the Premier League.

The club have had 4 different managers in the last 1.5 years. The club sacked Ralph Hasenhüttl in November 2022, and was replaced with Nathan Jones. He only lasted 3 months as he failed to make an immediate impact. In February 2023, Ruben Selles took in charge of the club as the caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, which ended in relegation for the club.

Last summer, Martin took over, signing a 3-year contract, and has made quite an impact. However, whether the club will stick with him if they fail to get promoted remains to be seen.

Things have been going well for David Moyes and his West Ham side this season, and the Scot can be pleased with the business that the club did over the summer in order for him to continue with the good form that the team were showing towards the back end of 2022/23.

Not being backed in the transfer market could’ve seen the Hammers regress as they’ve done so many times in the past, so a handful of studious and well thought out buys has them in amongst the chasing pack at present and looking lively.

Of course, not every player from last season will have made the squad for the current campaign, including those unlikely to be utilised or needing to be sold or loaned in order to balance out the squad and the books.

Declan Rice had seemingly made a decision to leave in the wake of West Ham’s epic Europa Conference League title win over Fiorentina, with Flynn Downes, who might have been expected to be given a chance in the position, shipped out on loan to Southampton.

It’s a move that has, so far, worked perfectly for the Saints and the player himself. Ultimately, it could also be to the east Londoners’ benefit.

“In transition (against Stoke), we were really good. Flynn was monstrous today and it has been the Flynn we know in the last two games. He’s been outstanding,” Southampton manager, Russell Martin, was quoted as saying by the Daily ECHO.

If his good form continues, he’ll be giving Moyes the headache of the best kind, unless the Premier League outfit have already made up their mind that Downes is surplus to requirements.

In the Championship early kick-off between Leeds and Southampton, the all whites will be looking to continue their six-game unbeaten streak in the Championship, whilst the Saints look to get their first win since August 26th.

The hosts are fifth in the Championship with the visitors flying high in sixth ahead of the St. Mary’s Stadium clash. Southampton are yet to record a victory in the month of September, losing four in a row since.

Meanwhile, Leeds are starting to catch their stride. Convincing 3-0 wins over both Watford and Millwall have come as part of a run that has seen them not lose a game in the Championship since August 12th, when Birmingham beat them 1-0 at St. Andrews.

This will be the first time the sides face off since they played each other in the Premier League last season.

Overall the two have played each other 98 times, with Leeds winning on 48 occasions, Southampton winning 28 and the game ending a draw in the other 22 matches.

Ahead of the game, set to kickoff at 12:30 PM (BST), both Russell Martin and Daniel Farke have named their starting lineups.

Southampton have made four changes from last weekend’s game against Middlesbrough.

Ryan Manning comes in for Mason Holgate in defence, Carlos Alcaraz replaces Shea Charles in midfield, Kamaldeen Sulemana replaces Ryan Fraser on the left wing and Stuart Armstrong comes into the attack for Che Adams.

Leeds have named an unchanged XI from their 3-0 victory over Watford last weekend, whilst Patrick Bamford returns to the bench along with Joe Rodon who missed out last week through suspension.

Russell Martin had some encouraging words for Swansea supporters in an update on the interest in Manchester United talent Ethan Laird after their recent match, according to Wales Online.

The Welsh outlet report that the 20-year-old, who was with Martin at MK Dons for the second-half of last season, is set to undergo a medical at Swansea’s training ground on Sunday.

Martin actually told the media that Laird was in attendance for the goalless draw against fellow promotion hopefuls Sheffield United, hoping that’s a sign that the ace is ‘ready to come in’.

Laird provided four assists in 24 appearances under Martin for League One MK Dons last season, showing signs that he’s capable of stepping up to the challenge of Championship football.

Martin added that a medical is still required, whilst he still ‘needs to discuss’ how a switch to Swansea would ‘work’ for Laird, with the boss insisting that a chat was planned for this morning.

Here is what Martin had to say on Laird, who watched the Swans battle against the Blades:

“He was upstairs watching tonight, so if he’s driven all the way down to Swansea, I hope that he’s ready to come in, he needs a medical and he needs to sit down with us and discuss how it’s going to work.”

“But he’s here and I look forward to seeing him tomorrow morning then we’ll have a chat and see where it goes from there, but hopefully that’ll be one that gets done.”

Laird has bags of pace, making him an ideal option for the wing-back spot in Martin’s system. The 20-year-old is naturally a right-back but can also feature on the left.

The England youth international debuted for United in the 19/20 season, making two appearances in the Europa League.

With the prospect of advancing his career with a spell in the Championship, it seems ideal for Laird to link up with a manager he’s familiar with, that should make the transition as smooth as possible.

Russell Martin and Swansea City have set their sights on a loan move for Manchester United talent Ethan Laird, according to TEAMtalk.

TEAMtalk report that Martin, the former Norwich and Scotland defender who has just been appointed as Swansea boss, wants to team up with Laird once more after having the ace at MK Dons last season.

It’s added that the Red Devils are ‘ready to sanction’ a temporary switch for the 19-year-old to the Welsh outfit, who have made the Championship playoffs in their last two seasons.

The close link with Martin seems to have provided Laird with a wonderful opportunity to test himself in the second-tier with a quality side that play an attractive brand of football.

With four assists in his 24 League One appearances for MK Dons last season, Laird certainly seems ready to be fast-tracked to the challenge of Championship football.

Manchester United describe Laird as as having ‘plenty of pace’ and ‘excellent acceleration’ on their website, attributes of the ace’s that will have been clear to fans that have seen the youngster play.

Ethan Laird in action for Manchester United

TEAMtalk add that Laird is close to returning to full fitness after an injury he suffered with the Dons.

Laird debuted for United in the 19/20 season, making two appearances in the Europa League.

With the England Under-19s international capable of playing as a wing-back or traditional full-back, as well as being able to feature on the left side as well, he could be a very handy option for Swansea.

MK Dons have completed the signing of Chelsea striker Charlie Brown on a permanent basis.

The 21-year-old joins the Dons after spending the last four-and-a-half years with the Premier League club, though he never made a senior appearance.

The left-footed forward moved to Stamford Bridge from Ipswich Town in 2016 and went on to become a regular goal-threat for Chelsea’s youth sides. In 108 appearances for the Londoner’s youth teams, Brown scored 53 goals and provided 12 assists, contributing to a goal every 87 minutes.

Those stats make for superb reading and his credentials were further enhanced when six of his 53 Chelsea goals came against EFL opposition in the Papa John’s Trophy, while he was also crowned UEFA Youth League top goalscorer during the 2018/19 season, after netting 12 times in just nine appearances.

Brown stepped up to play senior professional football last season, when he enjoyed a short loan spell at Belgian First Division B side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, before the coronavirus pandemic curtailed the season.

On joining MK Dons, the striker told the club’s website: “I’m over the moon to be here. This is an opportunity I’ve been waiting for and I can’t wait to get on the pitch and show the fans what I can do.

“The Gaffer has got a really strong plan for the team and I’m really excited to be a part of that and have the opportunity to help the Club get to where it wants to be.

“I’ve seen the way the team plays, with a lot of possession and creating a lot of chances for the strikers. It’s going to be up to me to finish those chances off and I’ll be looking to do that as often as I can!”

MK Dons manager, Russell Martin, echoed Brown’s excitement when he said: “Charlie is someone we’ve been monitoring for a while now and when it transpired that we could sign him, we jumped at the chance.

“He’s shown a lot of intent to come and play for MK Dons – turning down some more lucrative offers because he believes in what we’re doing here.

“I believe the way we play and the culture we’re building will suit him really well. He’s scored a lot of goals at youth level but I believe we can improve him even further.

“In the long term, he’s going to be a very, very good signing for the Football Club and I’m confident, once we get him up to speed, he will help us in the short-term as well.”
