For the second summer in a row, Leeds United have been busy in the transfer market.

After being unable to get back up to the Premier League at the first opportunity – agonisingly losing the Play-Off final to Southampton – there was always going to be a financial element that would come into play.

Manager, Daniel Farke, and owners, 49ers Enterprises, are seemingly caught between a rock and a hard place given that the club need to have quality players within the squad in order to give them the best chance of promotion this season, whilst understanding that many of the club’s better players will want to leave.

Willy Gnonto has often been touted as a player who will be one of those to move on, and it was believed that he would soon be making a switch to Everton.

However, Sky Sports journalist, Alan Myers, has all but confirmed that the deal is now off.

Everton are readying themselves to enter the transfer market in a big way according to CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of their plans.

The sale of Amadou Onana has put some decent money in club coffers, and Sean Dyche has already indicated where he wants it spent.

The Toffees are keeping up the pressure on Leeds United for their brilliant young attacker, Willy Gnonto.

Everton consider Willy Gnonto a priority

There was a new approach in the past week for the 20-year-old, and the Merseyside outfit are evaluating whether to send a new higher offer – at around £28m mark – in the next few days.

Everton consider Gnonto a priority signing and, thanks to the player’s desire to leave Leeds, they remain convinced that they can successfully finalise an agreement with him.

It’s not just Gnonto that they’re after for their front line either, as CaughtOffside sources also understand that Everton are considering a new approach for Chelsea striker, Armando Broja.

The Albanian striker is still waiting to see if AC Milan make a move in the final part of the transfer window [the second half of August], but Brentford could also look to do business for him.

There’s been no final decision on the future of Ivan Toney, but he could leave given the concrete interest of West Ham and Crystal Palace. Stuttgart and Bayern Munich are also in that particular race.

Everton will watch those developments with interest as it could affect their move for Broja.

In any event, at the other end of the pitch, centre-back, Jarrad Branthwaite’s situation remains uncertain.

Man United remain interested in taking him to Old Trafford this summer, and a new concrete attempt could soon arrive.

Leeds United winger, Willy Gnonto, is a man that is very much in demand, though Everton remain confident in signing the 20-year-old Italian this summer.

ToffeeWeb note the two offers that the club made for the player this time last year, both of which were rejected at the time.

With Daniel Farke’s side unable to get promotion back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking, it has left the all whites vulnerable to reasonable offers from clubs for their players.

Everton and nine other clubs interested in Willy Gnonto

CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of Gnonto’s situation are aware of his willingness to move to Goodison Park, and his desire to have his current club facilitate the transfer.

However, there are another nine clubs interested in the player’s services, and that could potentially complicate Everton’s desire to complete the signing soonest.

Sources have indicated to CaughtOffside that a price tag of £25m would be enough to prise the player, who scored eight goals and provided three assists last season (WhoScored), from Elland Road.

However, with so much interest in him, the Yorkshire-based outfit may consider that it’s worth holding out for the highest bidder.

Napoli, Juventus, Como, AS Roma, West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, Wolves and Newcastle United are all credited with an interest, with Everton set to submit their bid after selling Amadou Onana to Aston Villa.

A successful transfer at this stage could require some manoeuvring from Everton over the next couple of weeks, but if they’re determined to bring Gnonto to Merseyside, the one thing that they could have in their favour is the player’s desire to join them a year ago.

If nothing has changed since then, there’s simply no reason for him to take up any offers from elsewhere.

Unfortunately for Leeds United they just weren’t at the races in the Play-Off final and were deservedly beaten by a determined and well-drilled Southampton side.

That failure to get promoted back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking was always going to have repercussions, not least because the club will need to save on the wage bill.

Players that might perhaps have stayed at the club had they gone up will arguably be looking for a way out now, and Daniel Farke generally isn’t a manager that will stand in a player’s way.

Willy Gnonto could sign a new deal at Leeds

That said, he stood firm at the start of last season when it appeared that Willy Gnonto was doing everything in his power to engineer a move away from the club.

Farke’s refusal to be bullied by the player or his agent ultimately paid dividends, and so much so that Gnonto might well sign a new deal at the club.

“He had talks over a new deal that went unsigned. It wouldn’t massively surprise me if he signed a new deal. They can’t let everyone go. If Summerville was to go, is Gnonto the ideal replacement to come in? Arguably yes,” transfer expert Graeme Bailey said to Leeds United News.

“With Gnonto it depends who else goes. The season he has had, if you couldn’t sell him last summer, I don’t think clubs will be queuing up this summer. For him career wise, he is better off staying at Leeds and signing a new deal.

“That’s the way I see it playing out, unless one of those suitors in Italy really like him, but I don’t see Leeds taking a massively reduced fee for him. It will be hard for anyone to get him out, as proved last summer.”

Leeds United run the risk of being forced to sell two of their best players this summer.

Failure to win promotion back to the Premier League could see the 49ers enterprise cash in on Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto.

The attacking duo wouldn’t come cheap to any prospective buyer though. The club’s American owners are believed to value the pair at around £70 million — huge figures quoted from a team in England’s second tier.

Of course, beating Ipswich to the punch and returning to the big time is the club’s ultimate goal and the fact they could lose Summerville and Gnonto if they don’t should serve as great motivation to get the job done.

Between them, this season, Summerville and Gnonto have directly contributed to 41 goals from a combined 83 appearance across all competitions.
