Newcastle United are looking to sell several senior players this summer in order to reduce their average age, according to reports.

The Magpies have endured a slow summer so far with the conversion of Lewis Hall’s loan from Chelsea into a permanent transfer and the arrival of Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest their most eye-catching moves so far.

Meanwhile, the likes of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh have been sold, while Loris Karius, Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett and Jeff Hendrick have all left at the end of their contracts.

But despite a relative lack of incomings, the focus right now may well remain on getting players out of the door.

That’s according to The Athletic, who report that sporting director Paul Mitchell — who arrived this summer following a spell at Monaco — is currently focused on getting rid of more ‘senior players’ in order to craft a younger and more vibrant squad for manager Eddie Howe.

Which senior players could leave Newcastle this summer?

According to Transfermarkt, the average age of Newcastle’s current squad is 26.9, with only West Ham United and Fulham (both 27.8) boasting older groups of players among Premier League clubs.

Among the veteran stars who could leave Newcastle this summer are — via Geordie Boot Boys — Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and even club captain Kieran Trippier, with the latter reportedly attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle United haven’t perhaps been as active in the transfer market as many experts may have expected, however, with over a month still left before the window slams shut for another few months, there’s plenty of time for the Magpies to get some decent business done.

Although not qualifying for European competition will have arguably been seen as a backward step for the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) project, it will afford Eddie Howe an entire campaign where his squad aren’t overloaded with extra games.

They will want to be successful in the domestic cup competitions of course, but their Champions League campaign last season really did take its toll, so a respite from constant injury concerns is likely to be a blessing.

Newcastle willing to sell three players to help kick-start their transfer window dealings

CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of their transfer plans understand that all of Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier continue to attract interest from several clubs.

The Magpies are open to selling all three if the right offer comes in during the current period because the associated cash windfall will then allow the club to work to bring in some more players themselves before the deadline.

Like every one of their opponents, Newcastle now have to be mindful of Financial Fair Play and staying within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Newcastle will listen to offers for Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson
Newcastle will listen to offers for Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson

Fortunately, it appears that the Saudi Pro League, whom PIF remain heavily involved with, will come calling for two of the three players.

CaughtOffside sources have been told that Al-Qadsiah are interested in the Magpies 33-year-old English right-back, Kieran Trippier, and 30-year-old Paraguayan right-winger, Miguel Almiron.

Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal are also apparently monitoring Trippier’s situation, but have not yet made a move.

If none of the Saudi sides decide to follow up their initial interest for Trippier, his former club, Atletico Madrid, remains an option as well as Turkish giants, Galatasaray.

As of this moment, CaughtOffside sources further understand that no official bids have been lodged for Callum Wilson, though an expectation of the same over the next weeks is there.

There’s been lots going on behind the scenes at Newcastle United of late, not least the restructuring that needed to occur once Dan Ashworth departed the club.

Eddie Howe’s position remains unaffected, though it’s likely he’ll want some guarantees that the way of working that he enjoyed under Ashworth continues with new sporting director, Paul Mitchell.

If not, there’s every chance that Howe could listen to the overtures from the Football Association regarding the England job.

Newcastle want Anthony Elanga

For now, he remains fully committed to life at St. James’ Park, and CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of the club’s transfer plans have indicated that the club remain interested in Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga.

The 22-year-old Swedish winger, formerly at Man United, is likely to be available for in the region of £40m-£45m, and it’s understood that Howe thinks Elanga could be utilised as Anthony Gordon’s understudy.

Anthony Elanga is wanted by Newcastle

He is particularly interested in Elanga’s ability to play as a reverse winger on the right, and with ongoing interest from Liverpool in Gordon, it may be that Elanga quickly becomes a first choice for the club in the position.

Newcastle are also ready to listen to offers for Miguel Almiron, though nothing acceptable has been offered to the club at this point.

With the start of the Premier League season just over three weeks away, it’s important for Newcastle and any other club with transfer business to be conducted, to get it done as soon as practicable.

Bringing new players in right on top of the start of the season, or worse when the campaign has already kicked off, is bound to upset team equilibrium, so the sooner Newcastle can execute certain deals, the better.

Newcastle United will be hoping to bounce back from an underwhelming season in 2024/25.

The Magpies started the previous campaign well enough, with the early season highlight being the way in which they dismantled Paris Saint-Germain at St. James’ Park.

Unfortunately for Eddie Howe and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, that was the high point.

How to buy England vs Switzerland tickets

Injuries from then on decimated Howe’s squad, and slowly but surely the Magpies slipped down the table.

Knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, Newcastle thought they’d just about clawed themselves back into Europe for next season.

Alexander Isak likely to stay at Newcastle

When Man United surprisingly beat Man City in the FA Cup final, any notion of European football for 2024/25 was removed.

With no extra revenue from a European campaign and Newcastle needing to stay on the right side of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, the thought that a big name player would need to be sold wasn’t without foundation.

Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes are two stars that could command a hefty fee, with The Guardian (subscription required) suggesting that the club value him at £115m.

The outlet say that such a high price is to ward off the interest of the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, though there’s a reason why they might be able to keep hold of both Isak and Guimaraes this summer.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, the club are in discussions with a Saudi Pro League club regarding Miguel Almiron.

Having already sold both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh this summer, a decent fee for the Paraguayan international should help in keeping the wolf from the door.

From Isak’s point of view, it’s believed that he’s happy at the North East giants in any event.

It would appear that Newcastle United are aiming to get much of their transfer business done early in this summer’s window.

With Financial Fair Play in mind, the North East giants will have more headroom in the market if they’re able to offload players that are perhaps now considered to be surplus to requirements.

Both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh have recently left the club, and it seems that Eddie Howe isn’t quite finished with Newcastle’s outgoing business just yet.

According to Sky Sports, the Magpies are in talks with a Saudi Pro League club for the signature of Miguel Almiron.

Miguel Almiron set to leave Newcastle

Now 30 years of age, the Paraguayan international can no longer be considered a first-choice for Newcastle when everyone is fit.

Whilst that’s to be expected when your club is trying to build for a future which apparently includes bringing through younger players, that’s still likely to hit Almiron hard.

Newcastle's Miguel Almiron is likely to move to the Saudi Pro League
Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron is likely to move to the Saudi Pro League

After all, he’s long been a part of the Magpies success, and was the player who started things off on that famous night against Paris Saint-Germain last season.

His experience in and around the place could be invaluable to Newcastle, though if he’s only going to be utilised in fits and starts, his is a position that could easily be filled by another, younger exponent.

It seems clear that the Saudi Public Investment Fund are preparing to make a splash in the market where possible.

Rightly so too, as if the club want to get back to the top table of both domestic and European football, key areas need to be targeted.

The Saudi club that Almiron is linked with hasn’t yet been mentioned, though it appears to be a foregone conclusion that the player will soon be on his way out of the Premier League club.

Newcastle United attacking midfielder Miguel Almiron is reportedly set to be the subject of interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab once again, with the club set to make an official approach today.

Almiron has mostly been an important player for Newcastle, but it may be that the Magpies will now be prepared to let him go for the right price due to Financial Fair Play concerns.

Eddie Howe will no doubt be concerned about ongoing transfer rumours linking star players like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak with potential moves away from St James’ Park this summer, especially as the club will want to stay on the right side of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Even if Almiron is a useful member of this Newcastle squad, it would surely make more sense to cash in on him if possible, as that could mean the club are less desperate to accept offers for other star names.

Almiron notably had interest from Saudi back in January, though a deal never happened on that occasion, even if that interest still seems to be there now.

NUFC fans will hope the club can get a good fee for Almiron if he does leave, and it is expected that this will be a record deal for Al Shabab.

This summer is a huge one for Newcastle as it is a transfer window that could see a lot of change within Eddie Howe’s squad.

The Magpies boss will need to add to his squad for the 2024/25 campaign after experiencing an underwhelming season this time around.

Newcastle will not compete in Europe next term and that will have a big impact on the players they can bring in from both a financial and competitive point of view. The Premier League side already have issues regarding the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, which will force them to sell before buying during the upcoming transfer window.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are looking to sell fan favourites Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron, in addition to Martin Dubravka this summer. Sean Longstaff is also facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park with Leeds United already showing interest.

The report says unnamed clubs in Saudi Arabia have already held talks over a move for Wilson, while teams in the region are also interested in Almiron.

Callum Wilson is among several players Newcastle want to sell

Big stars may also leave Newcastle during the summer transfer window

In addition to these stars, several clubs are also showing interest in some of Newcastle’s biggest players. Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are being monitored by many huge clubs across Europe and selling one of the duo may save the Tyneside outfit from departing with multiple players.

On the other hand, allowing one of the pair to leave could set Howe’s team back ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as they will be very hard to replace.

Whatever way this summer is viewed, it looks like a difficult one for Newcastle, and the Premier League club will need to approach it cleverly in other to take the team forward.

Ipswich Town are setting their sights high for the upcoming summer transfer window, with Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron emerging as a potential target.

This intriguing possibility was highlighted by journalist Ben Jacobs during his appearance on The Fully Loaded Transfer Show, where he discussed Ipswich Town’s transfer ambitions and the potential acquisition of the Paraguayan winger.

Jacobs revealed that while the Tractor Boys’ primary focus remains on securing Omari Hutchison from Chelsea, there is a genuine interest in exploring the availability of Miguel Almiron. He stated, “I’m told that there is Premier League interest in Almiron as well and Ipswich may be one to watch. Ipswich’s number one priority would be to bring in Omari Hutchison from Chelsea, but you just don’t know, things could change.”

Miguel Almiron, 29, has been a pivotal player for Newcastle United since his arrival from Atlanta United in 2019. His energy, creativity, and work rate have made him a fan favourite at St James’ Park.

Ipswich Town could sign Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron

Despite his significant contributions, rumours have circulated about his potential departure from Newcastle, especially after a failed move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab in January.

The deal collapsed at the last minute due to Almiron’s refusal to leave midway through the season, even though an agreement had been reached between the clubs.

The speculation around Almiron’s future has only intensified with Jacobs’ comments, suggesting that Newcastle United’s board might be open to offloading him in the summer transfer window. “With Almiron and Ipswich, that one is one to watch,” Jacobs added, hinting at the possible developments to come.

If Ipswich Town were to secure Almiron’s signature, it would be a significant coup for the club. Almiron’s experience and quality would undoubtedly bolster Ipswich’s squad, bringing Premier League pedigree and international experience to the team. However, it remains to be seen whether Ipswich can compete with other Premier League clubs that might also be vying for the Paraguayan’s services.

While Ipswich Town could provide Almiron with a fresh challenge and a significant role in their plans, some might argue that the Paraguayan international could aim for a move to a club with established top-flight credentials.

Newcastle United’s star attacker Miguel Almiron may be on the move this summer as the club looks to adhere to financial regulations.

The Paraguayan international has been a consistent presence this season, making 41 appearances across all competitions and contributing 5 goals and 3 assists.

Almiron, whose contract runs until June 2026, has drawn interest from Saudi Pro League clubs and other Premier League sides.

His agent, Daniel Campos, revealed that several Premier League clubs have inquired about Almiron.

ABC Cardinal 730 AM interviewed Campos, (as shared by journalist Angel Elian on X):

“Other Premier League clubs have asked about him, but Newcastle don’t want to sell him. The Arab market is circling around. There may be news, but he is comfortable.”

While the agent has not mentioned the name of any clubs who have shown interest in his client, Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab are reportedly one of the interested parties.

They previously attempted to sign him in January, but the player chose to remain with the Magpies.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Almiron’s future remains uncertain, with potential suitors closely monitoring his situation.

Newcastle’s financial considerations might ultimately dictate the star attacker’s departure.

Football pundit Garth Crooks has been full of praise for Premier League referee Darren England following his performance during Newcastle’s match with Brighton at the weekend.

Eddie Howe’s side failed to cement their place in the European places further as they drew 1-1 with the Seagulls and after the clash, the St James’ Park faithful were not happy with the referee as they felt he had given some bad decisions against them.

One decision the Premier League official got spot on was booking Miguel Almiron late in the second half for diving as he tried to con the referee into awarding a penalty as Newcastle searched for a winner.

The dive was pretty pathetic from the winger and pundits have not been happy with the Paraguayan’s actions. Club legend Alan Shearer criticised Almiron during Match of the Day on Saturday night, and now BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has given his verdict.

Garth Crooks says Newcastle star Miguel Almiron should be “ashamed” of himself after dive

As part of his BBC Sport team of the week, Crooks gave an honourable mention to Darren England, whilst unsurprisingly not picking any Newcastle or Brighton players.

“Outstanding refereeing by Darren England who gave two yellow cards to players who dived in order to gain an advantage during Newcastle’s draw with Brighton,” the former footballer wrote.

“Brighton’s Julio Enciso and Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron ought to be ashamed of themselves.”
