Saturday afternoon sees the latest Man United vs Man City match up in the FA Community Shield, the traditional curtain raiser to the new season.

It’s a last opportunity for managers to take a reasonably good look at their starting XIs and see if there are still any last-minute tweaks to be made before the big kick-off.

The reality is that all it is, is nothing more or less than a pre-season friendly for whom the profits go to charity, and that meaning has been lost according to Stan Collymore.

Community Shield has lost its meaning

“This weekend sees the return of the Community Shield, a traditional pre-season friendly that I’m a big fan of,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“I do think that it absolutely shouldn’t be counted as a trophy, however.

“I think we need to tell the likes of Pep Guardiola that this isn’t something that he can count as one of his trophy wins. It’s not about Pep vs Klopp or Pep vs ten Hag either, because we’ve already had that narrative on any number of previous occasions.

“It was originally called the Charity Shield, and the money raised from the game was given to good causes. It still is. So we should promote that angle way more than we do currently.

“This year’s partner is MIND, and there’s a whole four or five days leading up to it where players, instead of talking about the inane rivalry of Man United against Manchester City, should be highlighting the charity and the issues they face etc.

“Let’s be perfectly honest, it’s the last meaningless friendly before the big kick-off, so moving forward, let’s get back to what the Community Shield is all about. Charity.”

Some fifty years ago, back in 1974, Liverpool’s Kevin Keegan was poleaxed by a right hook from Leeds United’s Johnny Giles in what was then known as the Charity Shield, but that’s about the most intense thing to have occurred in the fixture.

It’s supposed to be a game in which players can ease themselves through 90 minutes without picking up any injuries.

With supporters seemingly looking for any chance for one-upmanship, it’s seen the Community Shield evidently take on a more ‘competitive’ feel, and that’s completely missing the purpose of the game.

There are so many other opportunities for the clubs that compete in the Community Shield to go at it hammer and tongs too, so as Collymore suggests, perhaps now is the right time to rediscover the true meaning behind this curtain raiser.

As if the late double that was conceded to sink their Community Shield hopes wasn’t enough, today’s season-opening tie for Manchester City against Liverpool ended on an even worse note with a horror moment for marquee signing Erling Haaland.

Phil Foden forced Adrian to make a stunning save with a low strike that seemed destined to find the back of the net and the ball was parried out into the path of Erling Haaland…

City’s new frontman looked certain to open his account for the club on his debut but somehow rattled the crossbar with his effort from just six yards out.

Pep Guardiola’s side have recruited Haaland for a fee of £51.5m, per the Guardian, but they’re also paying out a mouthwatering £375,000-a-week in wages to the Norwegian.

In the 69th minute of this evening’s season-opening Community Shield clash between Liverpool and Manchester City, Pep Guardiola’s men drew level for a moment thanks to Julian Alvarez.

After Julian Alvarez nodded the ball down to fellow summer arrival and strike partner Erling Haaland, the ball made its way to Kevin de Bruyne and he wasted no time in showcasing his killer passing ability.

De Bruyne sprayed the ball across to Phil Foden, who had burst away from Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the wonderkid volleyed a strike towards goal that was blocked by Adrian.

Alvarez showed the kind of hustle that could make him a quick fan favourite in Manchester as he pounced on the loose ball and poked it into the back of the net.

The goal was initially chalked off for offside but a VAR review soon granted Argentine Alvarez a goal on his debut for City.

Excitement is already high for Alvarez’s addition to the team and the ace’s energetic outing on his competitive bow will only intensify that in the Etihad corners.

In the 20th minute of this evening’s official curtain raiser of the new English football season, Trent Alexander-Arnold started the show with a statement for Liverpool against Manchester City.

After Thiago Alcantara picked out Mohamed Salah with a pinpoint pass, the ball was laid off to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was sitting just outside of the box.

The full-back capitalised on his call for the ball as he curled the ball into the back of the net with a fine strike to fire the Reds into pole position to land the Community Shield.

The England international kept his celebration muted, literally, as he shushed the crowd and his critics off the back off a spectacular strike. Trent seemed to leave his actions to do the talking.

Alexander-Arnold is clearly fired up and ready to challenge those who question his ability after a relatively anti-climatic ending for Liverpool last season.

Harvey Elliott is quickly becoming a fan favourite with Liverpool fans, the talented ace hilariously called the Community Shield the ‘McDonald’s Trophy’.

Following Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield yesterday, some City fans decided to taunt Harvey Elliott on social media and the talented ace destroyed the trolls by calling the shield the ‘McDonald’s Trophy’.

On Instagram the star wrote: “Im not worrying bro, McDonald’s trophy anyway.”

The fast food giant are the official sponsors of the season opener.

Elliott went on to hail Liverpool’s ‘6 Champions Leagues’ triumphs. It’s safe to say Elliott held his own and comfortably won the battle of words.

Elliott landed himself in hot water last week after a video of him mocking England captain Harry Kane surfaced and went viral.

Will Elliott be forced to make another apology after his latest antics?

Check out Elliott’s thoughts on the Community Shield below:

Elliott was named on the bench by Jurgen Klopp for yesterday’s tie and the talented Fulham academy graduate could win himself some first-team opportunities given the prolonged leave awarded to Sadio Mane.

Elliott has looked very exciting for the Reds in pre-season and it’s easy to see why the winger is so highly-rated. The 16-year-old never looks afraid to run at his man and his style of play could flourish in Klopp’s system.

Elliott became the youngest ever player to feature in the Premier League after his league debut for Fulham in the latter stages of last season:

Footage has emerged of a mass brawl between Manchester City and Liverpool fans on the London Underground before today’s Community Shield tie.

The video of the incident shows both sets of fans throwing punches while travelling towards Wembley Stadium for today’s season opener.

It appears that the two sets of fans began to fight after the Underground service stopped. A set of City supporters on the platform appear to have attacked Reds fans that were on the train.

Take a look at the incident below:

It’s not nice to see things like this, hopefully the authorities punish the fans that were involved in the chaos.

Some Liverpool fans have decided to blast this otherwise fan favourite following a uninspiring performance against Manchester City this afternoon.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City managed to beat Liverpool on penalties in today’s Community Shield. Gini Wijnaldum’s missed penalty proved to be costly.

Liverpool were unflattering in the first-half, Manchester City quickly pounced on the Reds’ lacklustre performance when Raheem Sterling smashed the ball into the back of the net, whilst the Reds defence looked asleep.

Take a look here.

Some Liverpool fans were seriously unimpressed with the Reds’ display in the opening 45 minutes, with these fans branding it as ’embarrassing’ and ‘shocking’.

Jurgen Klopp’s halftime team talk did seem like it inspired his stars though, the Reds were more aggressive from the get-go of the second-half.

Substitute Joel Matip equalised in the 77th minute – just 10 minutes after being brought on, with a towering header after a lovely cross from partner Virgil van Dijk. Take a look here.

It looked as though the Reds had snatched a win in the final moments before Kyle Walker’s insane last-ditch goal-line clearance. Check it out here.

Wijnaldum was the only player to miss in the shootout, the Dutchman’s effort was poor and was directed straight towards Claudio Bravo.

Unfortunately, Wijnaldum was heavily criticised for his performance and his costly penalty. Fans should remember that today’s clash is arguably seen as nothing more than a exhibition.

The Dutchman deserves better treatment considering that his sensational double against Barcelona led the Reds to the Champions League final last season.

Check out some reaction to Wijnaldum’s performance below:

Klopp may have to rethink his use of Wijnaldum this season, more importantly the Reds’ lack of a creative spark in midfield could prove to be a serious problem this year.

Should the Reds sign an attacking midfielder before the transfer window closes?

Kyle Walker came up clutch for Manchester City in the final moments of today’s Community Shield clash vs Liverpool, look at this insane goal-line clearance.

In the 91st minute of today’s season opener, Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah turned England international John Stones in and out before firing an effort towards goal.

The superstar’s shot was blocked but he managed to loop a header towards goal with a rebound. The header looked destined to hit the back of net, but Kyle Walker had other plans.

The former Tottenham star race back towards his goal-line and produced an acrobatic overhead kick clearance to deny Salah the chance of spectacularly winning the game for the Reds.

Check out Waker’s unbelievable clearance below:

It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see an acrobatic last-ditch clearance again for some time. Walker’s athleticism is truly amazing.

In the 77th minute of the clash, Liverpool managed to equalise after captain Jordan Henderson’s free-kick was headed into the path of Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman showed his impressive ability with the ball by playing an inch-perfect cross into the six yard box.

Joel Matip towered over Nicolas Otamendi to head the ball into the back of the net.

Some Liverpool fans have blasted their side’s showing in the first-half of today’s Community Shield clash against Manchester City.

Liverpool don’t look as though they are at the races against Manchester City this afternoon, Pep Guardiola’s side are running rings around the Reds so far.

The Reds’ lacklustre showing was highlighted by the side’s poor defending in the buildup to Raheem Sterling’s opener, take a look here.

Whilst today’s clash is largely considered as a glorified friendly clash, Liverpool have showed a concerning lack of intent with their performance. City have controlled the possession and dictated the tempo in the game so far.

Jurgen Klopp’s biggest failure of the first-half was the team’s decision to roll over and allow City’s midfield stars to control the game, fans have blasted the performance of the Reds’ midfield stars.

Check out some reaction to the Reds’ performance so far:

Liverpool need to really up the tempo in the second-half, Klopp fielded the best side available to him this afternoon and whilst today’s clash is an exhibition, the Reds should be doing better.

Liverpool have the chance to build some crucial momentum with an impressive performance today.
