Manchester City won the Community Shield for the first time since 2019 with a 7-6 penalty shootout win over Manchester United following a 1-1 draw at Wembley on Sunday.

Following a slow-burn first half and a host of missed chances after the break — including a big one from Marcus Rashford — substitute Alejandro Garnacho gave United the lead in the 82nd minute following a driving run at the heart of the City defence.

However, that lead would last just seven minutes as fellow sub Bernardo Silva headed home City’s equaliser at the far post to force a shootout.

Bernardo missed City’s first spot-kick, but Pep Guardiola’s men remained perfect from there, with Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans missing for United.

City have now ended a run of three straight defeats in the Community Shield, while United remain the only side to lose four in a row (1998-2001).

Here are the full player ratings as Manchester City lifted yet another trophy.

Man City vs Man Utd player ratings — Community Shield

Man City (4-3-3)

Ederson – 7/10 – Could do nothing about Garnacho’s goal, wasn’t really tested otherwise. Sent Onana the wrong way in the shootout after denying Sancho.

Rico Lewis – 7/10 – Search ‘Rico Lewis’ on X and you’ll see a lot of divided opinion on his performance here. For the record, he was pretty solid.

Manuel Akanji – 6/10 – Desperately tried to block Garnacho’s shot for the goal but couldn’t make up the ground in time. The goal definitely wasn’t his fault, though. Gained some redemption for his penalty shootout miss against England at Euro 2024 by scoring the winning effort here.

Ruben Dias – 5/10 – Didn’t cover himself in glory on the goal, allowing Garncho to go by him and cause a terrible mix-up with Gvardiol. An excellent penalty in the shootout, however.

Josko Gvardiol – 4/10 – As above.

Mateo Kovacic – 8/10 – Probably Man City’s best player. Moved the ball quickly and tried to drive through the lines, while always looking alert to loose balls. Needed Rodri next to him, in all honesty.

Nico O’Reilly – 6/10 – Didn’t quite get into the game as much as he’d have liked, but O’Reilly will be happy with what was a solid debut.

James McAtee – 8/10 – Misplaced just one of his 30 attempted passes and almost got on the scoresheet, but was desperately unlucky to see his curling effort hit the post.

Oscar Bobb – 8/10 – Direct and electric, always looking to make something happen. Final ball was sometimes dreadful but he got it right to set up Bernardo’s equaliser.

Erling Haaland – 3/10 – No shots, no chances created, no impact. At least he scored in the shootout.

Jeremy Doku – 7/10 – Looked lively with his pace, especially in the first half. Lacking a little with his final ball.

Substitutes

Matheus Nunes (63′, for O’Reilly) – 5/10 – Didn’t get going in the final third and picked up a yellow card. Emphatic with his penalty, which even drew a visible reaction from Guardiola.

Savio (63′, for Doku) – 7/10 – Involved in the build-up to Bernardo’s equaliser and gave City fans promising glimpses on his debut. Sent Onana the wrong way with his penalty.

Bernardo Silva (80′, for McAtee) – 8/10 – With five touches of the ball, birthday boy Bernardo Silva managed to level the match with a header and complete 100% of his passes. Couldn’t follow that up in the shootout, missing City’s first penalty with a tame effort.

Kevin De Bruyne (90′, for Bobb) – 6/10 – Didn’t have time to get involved in normal time, but sent Onana the wrong way in the shootout.

Nathan Ake (90′, for Gvardiol) – N/A – No time to get into the game.

Man Utd (4-2-3-1)

Andre Onana – 5/10 – Had precious little to do until Bernardo’s goal in the final moments, which Onana could do nothing about. Denied Bernardo in the shootout but perhaps focused a little too much on his antics than keeping Man City players out for the rest of the contest.

Diogo Dalot – 8/10 – Put in a huge shift defensively and always looked to push forward in support of the attack. Just about squeezed his penalty beyond Ederson.

Harry Maguire – 7/10 – Clean with the ball and looked solid defensively. Only a couple of difficult moments and hopefully a sign of things to come this season.

Jonny Evans – 7/10 – Made it through the full 90 minutes and proved he can once again be a steady option for Ten Hag when required. Well, that’s as long as they don’t let him take any more penalties. A truly dreadful effort.

Lisandro Martinez – 7/10 – An old-fashioned full-back performance from a player out of position but kept things tight with three tackles, two clearances and 100% success on ground duels. Scored his penalty in style.

Casemiro – 8/10 – Looked like a completely different player to last season after what must have been one hell of a summer break. Made a match-high seven tackles, while also making eight recoveries and seven passes into the final third. At the heart of much of United’s best play. Cold as ice with his penalty.

Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10 – Tidy with the ball and worked hard without it, but his Euro 2024 exertions quickly caught up with him after half-time.

Amad Diallo – 6/10 – Lively around the box but his decision-making let him down. Could have scored in the first half but instead tried squaring it to Mount.

Mason Mount – 6/10 – Showed a few flashes of quality in tight spaces but still some way off being fully sharp.

Marcus Rashford – 5/10 – Missed a glorious chance in the second half, scuffing a left-footed effort inside the box onto the post.

Bruno Fernandes – 8/10 – Had a beautiful goal disallowed for offside before going on to provide the assist for Garnacho’s goal. Carved the Man City defence open a few times with his precision passing. Scored in the shootout.

Substitutes

Scott McTominay (59′, for Mount) – 4/10 – Missed a massive chance to kill the game late on but went with his right foot when the left-footed shot was the easier option. Barely touched the ball otherwise. Good penalty in the shootout.

Alejandro Garnacho (59′, for Diallo) – 9/10 – Like Bernardo for City, Garnacho completely changed the game from the bench and deserved his goal. Made no mistake in the shootout.

Toby Collyer (59′, for Mainoo) – 6/10 – A clean and composed debut.

Facundo Pellistri (59′, for Maguire) – 2/10 – Fell asleep at the far post to allow Bernardo his header for the equaliser.

Jadon Sancho (83′, for Rashford) – 3/10 – Didn’t get into the game and was denied by Ederson in the shootout.

Bernardo Silva scored the winning penalty for Portugal in the shootout against Slovenia to set up a quarter final against France.

Portugal struggled to break down Slovenia but both teams had brilliant chances to win the game in extra time as Cristiano Ronaldo saw his penalty saved by Jan Oblak whilst Benjamin Sesko saw his effort kept out by Diogo Costa when it perhaps would have been better to go around the goalkeeper.

The game finished scoreless and went to the first shootout of the tournament, and it was Costa who was the hero as he saved from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic.

Ronaldo made amends for his miss in extra with a brilliant penalty, whilst Bruno Fernandes rolled the ball home, with Bernado Silva tasked with taking the winning spot kick.

The Manchester City man duly obliged by stepping up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to send Portugal into the last eight, but they will need to improve if they are to have any chance of beating France.

Bayern Munich are reportedly interested in the potential £50million transfer of Manchester City attacking midfielder Bernardo Silva to go alongside their imminent purchase of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

That’s according to a report from the Daily Star, who suggest that Bayern are keen on Silva, though the Portugal international himself seems to be happy and settled with life in England.

Still, it seems Bayern, now managed by former Man City defender and captain Vincent Kompany, is very keen on Silva as a perfect addition to his squad, so this perhaps seems like another big story to watch this summer.

Silva is also on the radar of clubs like Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, but it remains to be seen if City will be ready to cash in on him at this stage, as they could perhaps do well to avoid losing more experienced players after last summer’s departures of Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez.

Silva transfer: Will Man City star join Bayern?

Bernardo Silva celebrates a goal for Portugal

Bayern are one of the biggest clubs in Europe so could surely be a tempting destination for someone like Silva, who may well also be keen on a new challenge after spending much of the peak years of his career in Manchester, winning all there is to win in the game under Pep Guardiola’s world class management.

Kompany faces a difficult job at the Allianz Arena after such a disappointing campaign last term, with Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side likely to be leading candidates for the Bundesliga title again next year.

Given that the Belgian tactician is also not the most experienced, he would surely do well to complement the signing of a young attacker like Olise with a more experienced and proven winner like Silva to go alongside him.

The Daily Star note that Silva has a £50m release clause in his City contract, which could be an absolute bargain for such a top player.

Bernardo Silva fired Portugal ahead in their Group F clash against Turkey with a clinical strike before a disastrous own goal doubled their lead.

After a disappointing outing in their first game of the European Championships which saw them barely scrape a win against the Czech Republic, Portugal set out to prove a point against Turkey on Saturday afternoon.

It only took until the 21st minute for them to take the lead courtesy of a clinical strike from Manchester City’s winger after some good play down the left-hand side.

That lead was then doubled just minutes later after a lacklustre back pass bypassed the outrushing Turkey goalkeeper.

Changes are expected in Man City’s midfield ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as the future of Kevin De Bruyne remains uncertain at the Premier League champions.

There has been no agreement over a new contract for the Belgian star whose current deal at the Etihad expires in 2025. There is interest in the 32-year-old from Saudi Arabia ahead of the summer transfer window opening and the Manchester club could part ways with De Bruyne to help fund new signings and if the right offer arrives.

This could see changes occur in Pep Guardiola’s midfield and sources have told CaughtOffside that City are looking at the market for replacements for the Belgian superstar.

Benfica’s Joao Neves is an option for Man City, who is also being pursued by their Premier League rivals Man United. The Portuguese club do not want to sell the 19-year-old for anything less than his release clause, which is set at €120m.

This could complicate things for Man City and it could see Guardiola turn to Xavi Simons, who is also on the Manchester club’s list.

Bernardo Silva could follow Kevin De Bruyne out of Man City exit door

In addition to De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva could also leave Man City this summer as Barcelona and PSG continue to show interest in the Portuguese star.

Sources have told CaughtOffside that no official offers have been made for the 29-year-old at present, as Saudi Arabia also have an interest in the Portugal international and have scheduled a meeting with the player next week to explore the negotiation margins for a transfer.

Losing both of these players would be a major blow to City but they will not sell them unless they have top replacements lined up.

Manchester City are set to make some changes in their midfield ahead of next season.

The main topic of discussion remains the future of Kevin De Bruyne, and according to CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of the club’s plans, a first attempt by the Cityzens to get the Belgian to renew has left a lot to still be discussed.

Both club and player will meet again in the coming weeks as they will need to delve deeper into the various aspects of any deal.

Man City want Lucas Paqueta to replace Bernardo Silva

The insistent interest from the Saudi Pro League remains active as some Saudi clubs consider De Bruyne among the main targets for the summer.

They will try and tempt him again and, given that he hasn’t rebuffed the interest out of hand, his future is, therefore, is still to be defined.

Another situation that needs to be resolved quickly is related to Bernardo Silva.

Lucas Paqueta is Man City's preferred replacement for Bernardo Silva.
Lucas Paqueta is Man City’s preferred replacement for Bernardo Silva.

The Portuguese is believed to be hoping that Barcelona come in for him, whilst Paris Saint-Germain are apparently increasing the pressure on him to sign for them.

Given his expected exit, West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta remains a concrete objective for the Premier League champions, even if the betting issue has frozen everything for now.

In addition to the Brazilian, Xavi Simons is on City’s list – as well as many other teams in Europe – as is Bruno Guimaraes who, unless there are sensational twists, should leave Newcastle in the summer.

On the incoming front, Pep Guardiola remains very interested in Joao Neves, the young Benfica talent, who has now become a key player for the Portuguese club.

The stumbling block to that deal at present is that the club don’t want to negotiate his release clause which has been set at €120m.

Manchester City attacking midfielder Bernardo Silva is reportedly no longer a priority transfer target for Paris Saint-Germain as they’re looking at other options instead.

That’s according to French outlet Le Parisien, who report that Silva is now not seen as a top target for PSG, who would prefer to sign Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia instead.

It remains to be seen if someone else might come in for Silva, or if this means the Portugal international will instead be staying at Man City for a while longer.

Most fans of Pep Guardiola’s side would surely rather see Silva stay, as he’s a world class performer on his day and a perfect fit for the club’s philosophy and preferred style of play.

Silva transfer no longer a priority as PSG look to Kvaratskhelia instead

Bernardo Silva is no longer a top target for PSG

Speaking with fans in a question and answer session on Le Parisien, senior journalist Dominique Severac discussed the Silva-PSG links, among other topics, and had this to say to a question from a reader:

“Hello Tom … no (Bernardo Silva is not still a priority). Over the weeks, the wish list has been refined between the two Luis (Enrique and Campos). The reinforcement of a right winger is no longer appropriate.

He added: “Paris is looking above all for a left winger and the priority is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who plays in Naples.”

One imagines there’ll surely be other suitors for Silva in the near future, with Sport recently reporting that the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich could also be in for the former Monaco playmaker.

City may well decide to make changes to their squad this summer and bring in a younger attacking player to replace Silva, but there’s also surely value in keeping someone of his experience around, similarly to how they’ve done with Kevin De Bruyne, who remains hugely important to Guardiola’s side.

Manchester United stunned the reigning Premier League champions Manchester City with a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup final, thanks to an impressive first-half performance.

Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring on the half-hour mark following a miscommunication between City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and defender Josko Gvardiol. The mix-up allowed Garnacho an easy tap-in.

Just nine minutes later, Kobbie Mainoo finished off a scintillating move in City’s penalty area, doubling United’s advantage.

This first half was historic as it marked the first men’s FA Cup final where two different teenagers scored. Mainoo, at 19 years and 36 days old, became the youngest English goalscorer in the final since West Ham’s John Sissons in 1964.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe celebrates winning the FA Cup.

Pep Guardiola involved in altercation with Manchester City player at half-time

Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola was seen sarcastically mocking his winger Bernardo Silva in the tunnel at half-time. This came after Silva expressed his frustration over what he perceived as a denied penalty for City just before the half-time whistle.

As the teams headed back to the pitch for the second half, Guardiola couldn’t resist a sarcastic jibe at Bernardo Silva. Silva was adamant that City were wrongly denied a penalty after Erling Haaland was fouled in the first half. Guardiola, mimicking Silva’s protest, said, “Ref penalty! Are you joking?!” before turning Silva back towards the tunnel as the rest of the team jogged out.

City struggled to display their usual sharpness and failed to register a shot on goal until after Garnacho’s opener. Despite their efforts, Silva’s penalty appeal and subsequent protests in the second half, following another incident involving Haaland, went unanswered by referee Andy Madley.

Manchester United frustrated Man City on their way to winning the FA Cup final

United’s performance was a testament to their tactical discipline under Erik ten Hag. They effectively managed transitions and frustrated City’s attempts to break through their defense. The intensity and incisiveness of United’s play highlighted their growth and adaptation since last year’s final.

City managed to pull a goal back through Jeremy Doku with just three minutes of regular time remaining, setting up a nail-biting finale. However, despite the late surge, Manchester United held firm to secure their victory in what could be Erik ten Hag’s final game in charge of the Red Devils.

Despite Man United securing the victory, in Guardiola’s post-match interview with the BBC, Guardiola remained defiant when asked if United had been the better team. “No,” he responded, emphasising City’s improved performance in the second half. He acknowledged their first-half struggles but insisted that his team had been dominant in the latter stages of the match.

Man City will have a tough task holding onto key man Bernardo Silva this summer as Paris Saint-Germain are ready to make a move for the Portuguese midfielder.

The 29-year-old has been a long-term target for the Ligue 1 champions and with the French club having money to spend this summer, they are in a very good position to try and sign the Man City star.

Kylian Mbappe will leave PSG at the end of the season and according to transfer expert Ben Jacobs for 90min, the superstar’s departure will free up €225m, including forgone loyalty bonuses the club can reallocate, plus saved wages, taxes and social security.

Luis Enrique will have that money reinvested into his squad and Silva is one of the main players the French club will try and secure ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Portuguese star signed a contract extension at Man City until June 2026 in August last year, which includes a £50m release clause that will become active in 2025. During the upcoming transfer window, City will look for a fee of around €75m, reports 90min, as the Premier League champions have no desire to sell one of their key men.

Pep Guardiola wants to keep Bernardo Silva at Man City

The report says that Pep Guardiola wants Silva to stay as the midfielder is still a major part of his plans at the Etihad Stadium. The 29-year-old has featured in 48 games for the Manchester club this season, scoring 11 goals and providing a further 10 assists.

Next season could be Guardiola’s last with the Premier League champions and would find it very hard to replace the midfielder if he left ahead of the new campaign.

As for PSG, the Ligue 1 outfit would be getting a world-class star, who is also very versatile. With Enrique building a young squad in Paris, the Portugal international would complement this.

Last Minute Playoff Final Tickets – READ MORE!

Pep Guardiola’s team still depends on the 29-year-old, but he is expected to be eager to leave the English champions this summer.

The six-time Premier League winner has been crucial to Guardiola’s success in the Premier League.

His versatility has been a valuable asset for the Premier League champions during their dominance of English football.

Man City would allow Silva to end his seven-year relationship with the Citizens at a certain fee, according to Football Insider.

The Portugal international is reportedly up for grabs for £50 million during the summer transfer window and a number of teams are interested in his services.

As per the report, the creative midfielder has a release clause in his contract at Man City, which was agreed during a contract extension last summer.

In the past, Silva has spoken of his desire to return to Benfica. The midfielder said, in an interview with A Bola:

“I’ve never hidden that one day I want to go back, so of course I do. Now, we’ll see over time what’s possible and it’s not worth talking about this all the time, because people get tired… Let’s see.”

Bernardo Silva has been linked with a move away from Man City.

At the age of eight, Silva joined Benfica’s academy in 2002 and went on to make his debut there.

However, he only managed to make three senior appearances before moving immediately to Monaco on loan in 2014, before the loan was extended.

The Football Insider report has claimed that French champions Paris Saint-Germain are trying to sign the Portuguese midfielder this summer.

After losing Kylian Mbappe for free, the Ligue 1 club is pushing hard to complete the signing of the Man City midfielder.

Man City star adds creativity and technical prowess

Silva would be a valuable addition for any team in the world right now.

His ability to play in all the midfield positions and both the flanks makes him one of the most versatile players around at the moment.

Man City would need a worthy replacement of a player who has performed consistently for them over the last half decade.
