Liverpool are closing in on a new deal to secure the long-term future of their defensive mainstay Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future has been one of the biggest talking points in recent months. With his contract at Liverpool running out in 12 months, the 25-year-old full-back has attracted a lot of interest from across Europe. The Merseyside club are keen on securing his long-term future and according to a report from Football Insider, the Reds have held talks with their academy graduate regarding a new deal and significant progress has already been made.

Alexander-Arnold joined Liverpool back when he was just six years old. He came up the ranks at some pace and was playing for their first team at the age of 18. He has since established himself as one of the mainstays and has helped them win numerous silverware during Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club.

Following the departure of the German manager, Alexander-Arnold’s future has been up in the air. His current deal runs out next summer and there is interest in his services from Real Madrid. Los Blancos are quietly working on a Bosman move for the English international and feel his relationship with their star Jude Bellingham could help their cause.

The Reds are well aware of Madrid’s interest and they do not want to part ways with the 25-year-old for free at any cost. Back in July, they had already decided to hold talks with the full-back over a new deal. Finally, they have held talks with Alexander-Arnold regarding a new contract which will significantly increase his wages and reflect his status in the squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold still hasn’t signed a new Liverpool contract

Liverpool must keep Trent Alexander-Arnold

Arne Slot is keen on having him around for years to come and he wants their academy product to take over as their next skipper when Virgil van Dijk departs. The Reds have made progress during contract renewal talks and both parties are confident that an agreement will be reached within the next few months.

Liverpool have made a new contract for Trent Alexander-Arnold a high priority at Anfield with the defender set for talks with new Reds boss Arne Slot soon.

The England international is out of contract with the Merseyside club in 2025 and that has caught the attention of Real Madrid, who are monitoring Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation at Anfield as a free transfer could be on the cards next summer, reports Fabrizio Romano.

The 25-year-old is a generational talent when it comes to a right-back and is someone Liverpool will not want to lose, let only for free.

According to Ben Jacobs, the Merseyside club are calm about Alexander-Arnold’s situation but have made a contract for the full-back a high priority.

Alexander-Arnold will hold further talks with new Liverpool coach Arne Slot about his role and position next week and once that is complete, the Merseyside club will soon attempt to advance things on the contract front.

This is a crucial time for the right-back’s future at Anfield and if things don’t go to plan, that could pave the way for a move to Real Madrid.

Liverpool have made a new contract for Trent Alexander-Arnold a high priority

Real Madrid’s interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold should worry Liverpool

Alexander-Arnold is expected to pen a new deal at Liverpool as the full-back is a local boy and is next in line for the captaincy at Anfield once Virgil van Dijk moves on. The defender will also not want to see his club miss out on a large transfer fee and may agree to new terms just to help the Merseyside outfit in this way.

However, that may not stop a move to Real Madrid as the La Liga club will certainly entice the English star.

Jude Bellingham, a close friend of Alexander-Arnold’s is part of the La Liga champions’ squad and with Kylian Mbappe joining the Spanish giants this summer, they could dominate Europe for years.

What footballer would not want to be part of that? which means that Liverpool are never out of the woods when it comes to their right-back so long as interest from Madrid remains.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has urged the club to make ‘big decisions’ over the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The trio were key pillars in the success enjoyed by the Reds under Jurgen Klopp, who guided the club to Premier League and Champions League titles — and a further two finals — as well as a host of other honours.

However, all three have entered the final year of their contracts and are yet to accept new terms from the club. To see them leave Anfield for free would be a disaster, given they have a collective market value of €155m (per Transfermarkt).

And the loss of each would be felt in different ways, with Salah a talismanic goalscorer and enjoying a strong pre-season, Van Dijk the club captain and defensive stalwart, and Alexander-Arnold a creative powerhouse from the right.

For Thompson, the future of these players is one of the key problems to solve during the early stages of Arne Slot’s tenure in charge.

Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool warms up during the pre-season friendly match between Liverpool and Athletic Club at Anfield on August 08, 2021 in Liverpool, England.

Phil Thompson urges Liverpool to solve contract problem

“He seems invigorated now and it’s all wonderful,” Thompson told talkSPORT of Salah, but then added: “But he’s not signed a contract. Trent’s not signed a contract. Virgil van Dijk’s not signed a contract.

“These are three big players we can ill afford, with our finances, to allow to go for nothing at the end of the season.

“So big decisions have got to be made with Mo, with Trent, with Virgil. Because when you’re budgeting in your finances for your club, you’ll have these prices, a certain price.

“Now, if they’re going for nothing at the end of next season, it’s a massive [loss]. So I still think decisions with one or two of them, big decisions have still got to be made.”

Liverpool have enjoyed a strong pre-season so far, beating Real Betis, Arsenal and Manchester United during their US tour — the latter by a 3-0 scoreline.

Their final friendly comes against Sevilla at Anfield on Sunday before they travel to Ipswich Town in their opening fixture of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Liverpool stars Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez were recently seen playfully teasing teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold about the swirling rumors linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

The Liverpool right-back has been the subject of intense speculation regarding a potential transfer to the Spanish giants this summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold linked with a move to Real Madrid

With Alexander-Arnold’s current contract set to expire next summer and no updates on a new deal, uncertainty surrounds his future at Anfield.

Recognised as one of Liverpool’s best assets, the club’s owners are keen to avoid the risk of him leaving on a free transfer.

Real Madrid have reportedly made Alexander-Arnold their top transfer target, closely monitoring his situation.

In a now-viral video, Luis Diaz can be seen teasing the defender about a potential move.

As the three of them made their way down the stairs, Diaz can be heard saying, “Real Madrid? Ciao.”

Trent, upon hearing the comment, turned around and, while trying to hide his reaction, let out a small laugh. Nunez couldn’t help but smile at the exchange.

Liverpool’s impressive pre-season under Arne Slot

Liverpool have had a promising pre-season under new manager Arne Slot.

They have won all three games they have played so far, including impressive victories against Manchester United and Arsenal, while playing some exciting football.

It’s been a very quiet summer transfer window for Liverpool Football Club, but some very good news for supporters is seemingly on the horizon.

Liverpool were known to be continuing talks to extend the contracts of club captain, Virgil Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

New coach, Arne Slot, is understood to have quickly approved the terms of the contract extensions of all three of his players.

Three Liverpool stars set to stay

Although CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of the talks understand that no agreement has yet been reached, they have confirmed that all three players are prioritising staying with the Premier League club.

That will be music to the ears of Reds fans who perhaps are a little nervous about the first few months post-Jurgen Klopp.

Saudi Pro League outfits, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ettifaq continue to be linked with van Dijk and Egyptian King, Salah, however, neither player has shown an appetite to listen to their overtures at this point, despite the evident riches that might be available to them should they decide to ply their trade in the 68th best league in the world (TeamForm).

Liverpool stars Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool stars Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

From Trent’s point of view, Real Madrid continue to be interested in his services, but Los Blancos are not considering making an offer to Liverpool for the Englishman whose contract expires in 2025.

The Spanish giants want to sign both Alphonso Davies and Alexander-Arnold for free in 2025.

If better contract offers than those which are on the table from Liverpool are received from a Premier League club, sources suggest that’s the only thing at this point which may change the players’ thoughts.

Though you can never say never in football, the pendulum certainly seems to have swung in Liverpool’s direction, and that’ll be a real boost to Slot as he attempts to win over the Anfield faithful.

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been spotted signing a Real Madrid shirt amid transfer rumours linking him with the Spanish giants.

The England international has been a hugely important player for Liverpool down the years, but he’s now just a year away from being out of contract at Anfield and he’s been linked with Real Madrid recently by Christian Falk and others…

Real Madrid fans will now be intrigued by this image below, which might of course just be an innocent incident involving a big-name player signing a shirt for a fan, or perhaps a subtle hint over his future plans…

Even if this does turn out to be nothing, it’s perhaps not ideal during this period where there is genuine doubt over Alexander-Arnold’s future.

LFC supporters will hope there’s still a chance that he signs a new contract, or else they’re not too far away now from losing a world class player for nothing.

That would be difficult any time, but particularly so when long-serving legendary manager Jurgen Klopp has just left, and when influential and important players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk start to show signs of ageing and being past their best.

Absolutely no change in Trent’s current situation despite reports

England’s Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold

As I always repeat, footballers are friends but it means nothing in terms of transfers.

Just because Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham have been seen having dinner together… there’s really nothing more to say.

They are great friends and that’s it.

Real Madrid are monitoring Trent’s situation as reported back in March and the situation has absolutely not changed at all so far.

Villa dreaming of stunning João Félix capture

Aston Villa are dreaming of João Félix.

He’s the ultimate target, especially for Unai Emery who’s a big fan of the player and he’d love to work with him.

It’s still early, nothing advancing now, but one to watch.

Let me clarify guys that it’s a complicated deal because it’s very expensive on fee and salary, but Villa want to try.

Wan-Bissaka prefers Serie A switch, whilst West Ham agree terms with Bayern for Mazraoui

Despite the rumours, I’m not aware of Noussair Mazraoui preferring a move to West Ham over Man United.

Man United still have Aaron Wan-Bissaka and they need him to leave first in order to bring in a new right-back.

The situation whilst I’m writing is that West Ham can make a deal happen now as they have agreed terms with Bayern, but they’re still working on the player side.

It’s also true that Wan-Bissaka would like to move to Italy but at the moment it’s not something advanced or concrete.

An idea offered by intermediaries since April/May was a swap deal with Inter’s Denzel Dumfries, but it’s just agents trying to make a deal for two players out of contract in 2025.

No Barça move for Dani Olmo until Nico Williams story is clarified

Guys, I keep repeating that Barça are focusing at the moment on Nico Williams.

Barça want Nico Williams as their absolute priority and all of their efforts are going into trying to get a deal done.

They’re waiting for Nico’s final approval and for La Liga to give the green light to the deal, so it could be announced at any moment.

Dani Olmo remains very appreciated by Barça, but he will only be discussed after the Nico story is clarified.

Al-Hilal make contact for Vitor Roque

Vitor Roque of FC Barcelona

Sticking with Barça, and this is an important topic; Vitor Roque.

Al-Hilal have made contact with Barcelona and with the camp of the player, and they are prepared to start the negotiation with Barça.

It’s not correct to say that there is already an agreement between Al-Hilal and Barça, but there are contacts ongoing between the clubs, and Al-Hilal are really interested in Vitor Roque.

The new regulation in Saudi Arabia allows the club to have two players under 21 and it’s really important to have young talent in the squad.

Now Al-Hilal are trying and it could be important for Barça and Financial Fair Play, because obviously it will help Barcelona a lot for their movements – but it depends on the player.

Vitor Roque had the possibility one year ago to go to Man United, to go to Italian clubs, he had many possibilities – and he decided to go to Barcelona. Now, one year later, he has to decide whether he wants to go to Saudi Arabia or not.

It depends on the player, depends on his agent, depends on his staff, but the interest of Al-Hilal is there so let’s see if it’s going to become something close or concrete.

Chelsea waiting on Villarreal and Osimhen wants PSG

Chelsea want Villarreal’s Filip Jorgensen

I’m not aware of anything fresh between Chelsea and Victor Osimhen.

What I wanted to say is that Victor Osimhen, first of all, wants to leave Napoli, and the intention of Napoli remains to sign Romelu Lukaku, so this is the plan.

What’s happening with Osimhen at the moment? Paris Saint-Germain have no intention to accept the first two conditions that Napoli discussed with them last week.

Almost seven days ago, Napoli asked for Kang-in Lee to be part of the deal and PSG said no. Then Napoli asked PSG to pay the release clause, and PSG said no.

So if the price drops, we can still consider PSG as an option, because Victor Osimhen would love to go to PSG and gave the green light to them 10 days ago.

I can also tell you that there is still no business between Chelsea and Villarreal for Filip Jörgensen.

From what I’m told, the goalkeeper wants to go to Chelsea and Chelsea are working on it.

They offered €20m but Villarreal want €25m, so it’s a really small gap.

The negotiation will probably go to next week, but there’s a big chance to get the deal done.

Newcastle appreciate Marc Pubill but nothing close yet

There have been rumours linking Almería’s Marc Pubill with Newcastle, and whilst he is appreciated, at the moment there are no negotiations ongoing for him.

He’s been scouted for months, same with Italian clubs like Roma who have also been monitoring him.

At the moment, still nothing close or advanced.

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer.

The Reds defender has entered the last year of his contract at Anfield and rumours surrounding his potential exit have picked up pace.

The Merseyside club have three players entering the last year of their contract at the club including Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

However, only Trent has been regularly linked with a move away from the club, with Real Madrid keeping an eye on him, as reported by Christian Falk.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has now addressed the uncertainty surrounding the future of one of his main players.

Before Liverpool’s friendly against Real Betis, Slot told reporters, as reported by GOAL:

“My answer will probably be a bit boring, I think it is the same answer you have heard in the last five six, seven years. That contract situation is not discussed at this place, but just keep trying I would say!”

Liverpool Premier League Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move away from Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold is currently away from the team due to an extended break after he was involved in the European Championship this summer.

Liverpool should offer Alexander-Arnold a new contract soon

Slot and Liverpool cannot afford to lose him this summer or in the near future as he has been crucial to their success under Jurgen Klopp.

The England international has shown time and again that his presence on the right side of the Liverpool team is important to their performances.

In this transition period following Klopp’s departure, Slot would want his right-back to stay with the club and avoid any interest from outside.

Right now, the Reds are focusing on incomings at the club instead of outgoings.

The rumours that Trent Alexander-Arnold could be on his way to Real Madrid just won’t subside, and it hasn’t helped that the Liverpool man has been spotted dining with Jude Bellingham.

This time last year, Bellingham was being unveiled at the Santiago Bernabeu, and it’s fair to say that in the space of a year, he has cemented himself as a fulcrum of the current Los Blancos side.

Having already won La Liga and the Champions League in his debut campaign in Spain, it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine the 21-year-old espousing the virtues of his employers to anyone that wants to listen.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham have been spotted dining together
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham have been spotted dining together

With Liverpool now in a transitional period under Arne Slot, there are cogent reasons why certain first team stars might be considering their futures.

After all, it’s never going to be the same as it was under Jurgen Klopp, though Slot really does need to be given a chance to be able to get his feet under the table before players make any decisions on what happens next.

As Fabrizio Romano reports, anyone believing Trent is any closer to Real at this point is wide of the mark.

No change in Trent’s situation – Romano

“As I always repeat, footballers are friends but it means nothing in terms of transfers,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

“Just because Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham have been seen having dinner together… there’s really nothing more to say.

“They are great friends and that’s it.

“Real Madrid are monitoring Trent’s situation as reported back in March and the situation has absolutely not changed at all so far.”

As transfermarkt note, Trent’s contract ends in June 2025, so he may well give Slot until January before making a final decision.

If the Dutchman hits the ground running, there’s no reason for the full-back-cum-midfielder to leave Anfield, but if he’s not overly impressed, then Trent will likely leave for free in a year’s time.

Latest on Ugarte to Manchester United amid Fofana links

Manchester United had some conversations with Monaco to understand the availability of players like Youssouf Fofana and Vanderson, but my understanding is that, internally, the main names Man United are discussing for the midfield is PSG’s Manuel Ugarte, and Sofyan Amrabat.

For Amrabat, they didn’t trigger the buy option, but it remains a possibility for them to discuss different terms with Fiorentina. And for Ugarte, they remain in conversations with Paris Saint-Germain, while they have an agreement with the player. I’m hearing there are contacts ongoing between Man United and PSG since June, not official bids accepted or rejected – it’s a constant dialogue between the clubs. Ugarte remains on Man United’s list and he said yes last week, so now it depends on Manchester United. But as I previously said, it was always going to take some days to decide after they spent big money on Leny Yoro.

On Matthijs de Ligt, Bayern insist on €50m, but United want to pay add-ons as part of the structure, rather than €50m guaranteed. De Ligt keeps waiting for Man United and is hoping for the move, but at the moment outgoings are really important for the Red Devils, so it could take some time to see what happens between the clubs.

Remember as well that this story also impacts Jonathan Tah, who has an agreement to join Bayern, but who is waiting for De Ligt to leave as part of the domino, so let’s see what happens, but the Dutch defender is waiting and hoping to join Man United.

Bayern and PSG battle for Desire Doue

One of the stories of the day is the big fight going on between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich for Desire Doue. The Rennes youngster, born in 2005, is one of the best French talents around and is valued by his club at around €60m.

Yesterday, Bayern presented a new bid for Doue, worth almost €55m, while Vincent Kompany has also been insisting on the player side to present the project. However, Paris Saint-Germain are absolutely still there, because it’s crucial to note that Doue himself has still not decided which club he wants to join.

My feeling after speaking to sources is that PSG are really convinced they can reach an agreement – they are preparing a new proposal and want to close the deal as soon as possible on the player side. Let’s see what happens, but it’s going to be one of the most interesting battles of this summer’s transfer window.

Xavi Simons now more likely to join Leipzig

I’ve always said that, despite links with Manchester United and other English clubs, it was always between RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich for Xavi Simons this summer. And now Leipzig are increasingly confident and almost convinced that Simons will be their player next season after increasingly positive contacts between Leipzig and the player’s representatives.

Paris Saint-Germain are also aware of the player’s decision, with Leipzig the big favourites. It’s not done yet, because Bayern will try until the end to change the situation, but as of this moment, the clear favourites are Leipzig to keep Simons for one more season on loan.

And it’s worth pointing out again that PSG only want a loan, as I told you in April, May and June – no permanent transfer this summer. It could be a permanent transfer in 2025, but not this summer. Either way, it’s a fantastic signing for Leipzig after they also extended the contract of Benjamin Sesko and also of their manager Marco Rose.

If Bayern cannot sign Simons, then there could be other alternatives to watch. Dani Olmo has been on Bayern’s list since May, but it will depend on the evolutions on the Simons and Desire Doue negotiations. There’s still no bid for Olmo, but it could be one to watch in the next weeks for several clubs. Leipzig are open to selling if the proposal will be around €60m.

What next for Victor Osimhen as PSG deal stalls?

I keep being asked about the situation of Victor Osimhen – my information is that ten days ago PSG had the green light from Osimhen over a transfer, so he’s open to the move and wants to join. So, what happened? Napoli had some negotiations with PSG, but the Ligue 1 giants said no to including Lee Kang-in in the deal, and said no to paying Osimhen’s release clause.

The only way for PSG to do the deal is for a reduced price, so let’s see what happens, but in the last 24-48 hours, PSG director Luis Campos spoke to Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani to reassure them that they will be PSG’s strikers for next season.

Still, the market is long, and even if this deal is not advancing, it’s not off yet. My understanding is that Osimhen still wants to leave Napoli and that Napoli also want to sign Romelu Lukaku. This is the plan, and Napoli already have an agreement with Lukaku, so they have to find a solution for Osimhen.

Let’s see if PSG will return, but at the moment they are very clear in not proceeding with this deal on those conditions. Chelsea have also been linked with Osimhen many times, but the reality is that they never wanted to pay his release clause at Napoli, or the player’s salary, which is around €11-12m net per season. This is too expensive for Chelsea, and so this is why it has always been a complicated deal for them.

Jadon Sancho on PSG’s list

More on PSG as I can confirm that Jadon Sancho is also one of the names on their list this summer. There is still no direct contact made with Manchester United, so at the moment this is not a proper negotiation, but Sancho is one of the names PSG have on their shortlist for the left winger position.

PSG’s fist target for that position was Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but Napoli are not selling him, so PSG are considering other options, and Sancho is one of them, though not the only one. There’s still no bid, but it’s an interest that PSG have confirmed to the agents of the player.

Let’s see if this will develop into a negotiation, but that will also depend on what Manchester United want to do. For now, Sancho is back in Erik ten Hag’s squad for pre-season, so let’s see how well they work together and how that situation evolves in the next days and weeks.

In other news…

Mikel Merino – Despite links with Chelsea and Manchester United, I’m only aware of Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s interest. Still, at the moment there has been no official bid to Real Sociedad yet, so let’s see how it goes in the next days. Arsenal’s focus now is on completing the Riccardo Calafiori deal. But in my opinion Merino would be an excellent signing; quality, consistency, good on international stage, he’s a good opportunity on the market with just one year left on his deal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – There’s still no substantial update now on Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future, despite reports on plans for a new contract. Liverpool want to keep him, we know that, but there’s still no substantial update on this one. We have to wait. Real Madrid are attentive as we said in March, it’s not a new story; nothing has changed in the recent days.

Eddie Nketiah – Arsenal striker Nketiah remains a big target for Marseille in what has been an ambitious summer for them so far. Valentin Carboni is another big target but it’s not easy, while they also want a new goalkeeper for sure. Marseille are working on several deals, there’s more to come. So far, they’ve done great work and it has been an excellent window, also with the hiring of Roberto De Zerbi as manager. One of the best clubs on the market so far.
