According to a report in De Telegraaf, newly-promoted Premier League side Leicester City are interested in signing Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn.

The Dutch international player has attracted interest from Leicester City and a move to bring him back to the Premier League is already in motion.

The Foxes have identified the player as their target this summer and they have initiated contact with Ajax to sign the 26-year-old.

The Dutch team that advanced to the Euro 2024 semifinals included Bergwijn.

He made two appearances, starting on the right side of their quarterfinal and semifinal matches against Romania and Turkey.

Since joining Ajax in the summer of 2022 from Tottenham, Bergwijn—who can play both as a striker and winger—has been impressive for the Dutch club.

The Dutchman signed a permanent contract with Ajax after leaving Spurs two years ago.

His most memorable Tottenham match—ironically—came against Leicester a few months before his departure from the North London club.

Leicester City to sign Steven Bergwijn?

Bergwijn scored two late goals against Brendan Rodger’s Leicester City, the first one in the 95th minute and the second one in the 97th minute, to guide Spurs to a famous victory.

Despite not being able to establish himself as a regular starter at Tottenham, the player showed flashes of brilliance.

Leicester City can provide Bergwijn another chance in England

He lacked consistency and Spurs eventually decided to allow him to move back to the Eredivisie.

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper is now looking to add quality to his squad as he prepares the team to play in the Premier League.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that Leicester City have approached Ajax to ask about Bergwijn and the conditions regarding a possible deal.

With just under ten days left in the new Premier League season to start, it is time for the Foxes to act swiftly.

West Ham United are looking to sign a player in attacking position since Lucas Paqueta’s future at the club is uncertain.

The Hammers have completed three signings this summer after announcing the arrival of Luis Guilherme, Wes Foderingham and Max Kilman.

There are more arrivals expected at the club as Julen Lopetegui tries his best to stamp his authority.

De Telegraaf claims that the Hammers can sign Steven Bergwijn from Ajax this summer for just £21 million.

The manager is reportedly a fan of the Dutch player who played for West Ham’s London rivals Tottenham during his spell in the Premier League.

The player did not enjoy success at Spurs and failed to make a huge impact which resulted in his departure from North London.

However, the West Ham manager feels Bergwijn can be useful for the Hammers due to his pace and versatility.

While on vacation, Bergwijn will make his decision on his next move.

He has the option to stay at Ajax, and if he has a successful season, his transfer worth will increase.

The Hammers face competition from Saudi Arabian clubs for the player but at the age of just 26, a move to the Middle East does not make sense for the former Spurs player.

In just 24 Eredivisie games last season, Bergwijn was involved in 16 goals for the Dutch club and that is why the Hammers are interested in bringing him back to the Premier League.

West Ham United are preparing an opening bid for the potential transfer of Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn, with Crystal Palace and Marseille also among the clubs interested in the Dutchman.

Sources with a close understanding of the player’s situation have informed CaughtOffside that West Ham are set to try offering around €20m for Bergwijn, though it may take more like €30-35m to persuade Ajax to sell the Netherlands international.

Crystal Palace and Marseille are also keen on Bergwijn, though it’s felt that the 26-year-old would be keen on playing in the Premier League again after his previous spell at Tottenham.

Bergwijn didn’t exactly look that convincing at Spurs, but he had some moments of quality and he’s continued to show his potential at Ajax, with teams like West Ham and Palace surely able to benefit from bringing him in, provided the money is right.

Bergwijn transfer: Will he end up at West Ham or Crystal Palace?

West Ham have made checks on Bergwijn’s situation recently, and CaughtOffside understands their interest is now the most advanced as they prepare to make an opening offer to Ajax.

It seems likely that the Hammers’ €20m offer will fall some way short of Ajax’s valuation, and it then remains to be seen if the east Londoners will try again with an improved offer, or if other clubs will come in for him.

West Ham could do with strengthening their attack after being slightly over-reliant on Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen in recent times.

PSG deny big fight between Kylian Mbappe and Nasser Al-Khelaifi

On Sunday evening it was the last appearance for Kylian Mbappe playing for Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes. We saw PSG lose to Toulouse but they celebrated winning Ligue 1 at the end anyway.

As I’ve previously reported, Mbappe is now set to leave PSG for Real Madrid. We’re just waiting for the next steps and then we will have the ‘here we go’ very soon and I will keep you posted on that.

For now, there have been reports of a big argument between Mbappe and Nasser Al-Khelaifi before the Toulouse game, but PSG sources deny this. They spoke, as they have some things to clarify before Mbappe leaves, so obviously it’s not a great friendship at this moment, but PSG guarantee that it was not a big fight between Mbappe and the president.

I had the chance to meet Mbappe after the game on the pitch – it was a special moment, and the feeling around the stadium was interesting because it was not a normal game for Mbappe. He wanted to celebrate the title and enjoy it with his teammates and with his mother, who was there too.

I noticed that Mbappe and his family seemed really relaxed after three months of media speculation, with his future finally settled, and you could see on his face that Mbappe was really relaxed, and really happy because he’s going to fulfil his dream to play for Real Madrid.

As I’ve previously reported, even if there were links with Premier League clubs, this was never something serious or concrete, and he also didn’t want to consider bids from Saudi Arabia, even when he was being offered crazy money. He was only focused on Real Madrid, only wanting to play for Real Madrid, and now the time is coming.

Still, it’s also important to say that Mbappe really wanted to enjoy the moment with the PSG fans, their ‘Ultras’, who prepared a special tifo for the player, and he also received a standing ovation, so it was a nice moment.

Despite so much being written about Mbappe, he’s always been super professional at PSG, even if it’s not always easy leaving as a free agent. But he never created any problems, and he was really nice and classy when I met him on the pitch, where he was also keen to talk with everybody, instead of just heading down the tunnel.

All in all, it was a really nice evening and I also met Gianluigi Donnarumma, who keeps on winning and winning more and more titles with PSG, and I also got the shirt of Manuel Ugarte. It was a wonderful night of celebration, even if there’s some sadness that they couldn’t reach the Champions League final this season, but they won the title and Luis Enrique has done well in a super positive season.

Next it will be time for PSG to make some signings in what could be a busy and important summer, while it will also be time for Mbappe to keep an eye on Real Madrid in the Champions League final before being unveiled by the club with president Florentino Perez. It’s all being prepared and I’ll have the final details soon.

Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro to Saudi?

Since the Saudi Pro League project started more than one year ago, Bruno Fernandes has always been one of the players most appreciated by Saudi bosses, but at the moment it’s nothing concrete. Fernandes is fully focused on Manchester United and there are no talks – Bruno will not discuss anything until he knows more about the project at United, and possibly the change in manager, so there are many things to clarify at United first. Meanwhile, Fernandes has always been super committed to the club, so let’s see what happens.

I do, however, expect Casemiro to leave United this summer. Saudi clubs really want Casemiro, but we’ll have to see which clubs, and how much they want to invest in terms of salary. But the interest from Saudi is there, and also United are open to letting Casemiro leave, so there are very good chances to see Casemiro moving to Saudi this summer.

Casemiro has had a difficult time at United, but in my opinion, Casemiro remains a legend of the game for what he did at Real Madrid. At Man United all players are struggling, not just him… it’s a general problem, not a single player. We could mention 15 players not performing well for United, and many things not working.

No decision yet on Vitor Roque’s Barcelona future

Deco has not decided anything on the future of Vitor Roque yet. There will be a meeting between all parties in the next days, discussions will follow with all parties involved to decide on the player’s future. Some patience is needed on this case among many, many rumours.

Still, with Financial Fair Play concerns, Barcelona will have to sell some players this summer of course. However, for now I can guarantee they have not decided anything yet, every day on media it looks like one player is leaving but the reality is that at the moment it’s still quiet. For example, Ansu Fati remains one of the players expected to leave and let’s see what kind of proposals they will receive for Raphinha.

Steven Bergwijn attracting Premier League interest

Steven Bergwijn could leave Ajax this summer due to their financial situation. There are concrete chances of Bergwijn leaving for around £20m, but there are no negotiations just yet.

West Ham previously showed an interest in Bergwijn, but apart from that I can’t name interested clubs yet. Bergwijn is appreciated in the Premier League – he is on the list of several clubs there, and there have been some calls to be informed on his situation, but let’s see if West Ham decide to try again for him under Julen Lopetegui.

Tottenham vs Man City should be a fantastic game

Finally, I’m looking forward to tonight’s big game in the Premier League between Tottenham and Manchester City, with so much riding on this result for both teams.

With Aston Villa dropping points against Liverpool, it gives Spurs a slim hope of catching them and finishing fourth, so I’m sure they will compete at their best level tonight even if getting a result against City helps Arsenal in the title race.

Still, City have been on fire recently, so I’m sure it will be a fantastic game and it feels too close to call now.

Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn is set to be made available for around £20million this summer, but it’s not yet clear if West Ham United will come back in for him after previous interest.

That’s according to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano as he spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column to discuss Bergwijn’s future.

It seems likely that Bergwijn will be on the move this summer, and there is already some interest from unspecified Premier League clubs, according to Romano, though it’s unclear if West Ham will be back in for the Dutchman, and it may depend on the feelings of incoming manager Julen Lopetegui.

Bergwijn previously struggled to impress during a spell at Tottenham, but he’s had some decent moments in his career and could be a bargain for £20m, so it will be interesting to keep an eye on this saga as it looks like hotting up ahead of this summer.

Bergwijn transfer: Will Ajax star be on the move to West Ham?

Discussing Bergwijn and the West Ham links, Romano said: “Steven Bergwijn could leave Ajax this summer due to their financial situation. There are concrete chances of Bergwijn leaving for around £20m, but there are no negotiations just yet.

“West Ham previously showed an interest in Bergwijn, but apart from that I can’t name interested clubs yet. West Ham could do with strengthening in attack this summer as they’ve often been a little overly reliant on Jarrod Bowen in that department, while they also had some success with the signing of Mohammed Kudus from Ajax last summer.

Bergwijn looks like he could be another smart addition on the cheap, but it seems there’ll be plenty of other suitors in for him as well.

With Ajax set to miss out on European football next season, the Amsterdam team will need to watch their finances this summer with several stars such as Steven Bergwijn likely to leave the club.

The Dutch giants will finish fifth in the league this season, just missing out on qualification for the Europa Conference League. Ajax are expected to be in the Champions League every season but given how the current campaign has played out, they would have taken UEFA’s least important competition.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Amsterdam outfit could sell Bergwijn this summer and the 26-year-old could be available for just £20m.

The transfer journalist states that the winger is on the transfer lists of several Premier League clubs but West Ham have been interested in the Ajax star since January.

The upcoming transfer window will be a big one for the Hammers as the East London outfit looks to start a new era at the London Stadium in the best way possible following the departure of David Moyes.

Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn could be a smart signing for West Ham

With several Premier League clubs having financial worries heading into the summer transfer window, signing Bergwijn for just £20m would be smart from West Ham. The Dutch star is likely to be a backup player at the Hammers but would reduce the gap in quality between the starters and rotation players.

The winger also has Premier League experience having played for Tottenham between 2020 and 2022. The 26-year-old played a total of 83 games for Spurs, scoring eight goals and assited a further nine.

Bergwijn was never able to tie down a starting place at Tottenham during his time at the Premier League club but having spent some time away, the winger will come back to England a stronger player.

Latest on the uncertainty surrounding Kalvin Phillips and Emile Smith Rowe

I’ve had some questions about Kalvin Phillips and Barcelona in recent days, but from what I understand Barca have never contacted Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips. Things can change quickly, especially towards the end of January, but as of today there are no negotiations and it’s not something close or concrete.

As previously reported, it’s not a cheap loan for Phillips – this is why Juventus decided to leave the conversations as they felt it was too expensive, and this is also why English clubs like Newcastle are not so convinced about the deal. Phillips is appreciated, but there is a loan fee and salary coverage, so it’s an expensive deal. Newcastle are also one of multiple clubs appreciating Everton’s Amadou Onana, but he’s very expensive and not an easy target. Financial Fair Play limitations make it very difficult for Newcastle, so let’s see what happens in the summer.

Keep an eye on West Ham, though, as they keep pushing on that deal and they keep hoping Phillips will decide soon, but it’s not easy.

Staying with West Ham, Arsenal said no to their approach over a loan move for Emile Smith Rowe. West Ham had concrete contacts on Thursday, and then on Friday they made a proposal for a loan deal for Smith Rowe, but Arsenal said no as it made no sense – perhaps a big offer could make a difference for Financial Fair Play, but not a loan. They are also more than happy to keep Smith Rowe at the club because Mikel Arteta is very happy with him and he’s convinced the potential is there.

Smith Rowe is also very happy at Arsenal, so although West Ham tried, it doesn’t look like this one is happening. It’s also important to note that David Moyes has said the truth and confirmed what we always mentioned: West Ham need to sell if they want to bring in new players. Said Benrahma has to go, for example. So Arsenal won’t accept loan proposals for Smith-Rowe.

West Ham will also have alternatives for sure, Steven Bergwijn is still appreciated but there are more players on their list.

In terms of other players who could leave Arsenal, I’d keep it open for Cedric Soares and more players. Nothing is imminent at this stage but next week some movement could take place for the outgoings, let’s see.

Kieran Trippier says ‘yes’ to Bayern transfer

Bayern Munich have approached Newcastle United for Kieran Trippier. Although Newcastle don’t want to lose the player, conversations and negotiations have started as Trippier is keen on the move to Bayern – it’s an incredible opportunity for him at 33 years of age. Trippier has said yes to Bayern, so now it’s on the clubs to negotiate and find an agreement.

From what I’m told, it would be a permanent transfer – no chance for a loan. Let’s see how Bayern will decide to proceed, but talks are ongoing. The top right-back target for Bayern remains Nordi Mukiele from PSG. That deal is not off yet, but it’s not easy, because Bayern want a loan with a buy option, while PSG want more guarantees.

Tottenham hoping to win race for Antonio Nusa

Antonio Nusa could be one to watch – the exciting young Club Brugge winger, born in 2005, is a target for Tottenham. Conversations are ongoing between Spurs and Brugge, and new contacts are expected in the next days. Soon it will become clear what will happen, but for now my understanding is that Tottenham want to sign the player now and allow him to join in the summer as he doesn’t want to leave Brugge in January, he wants to complete the season with his current club.

However, it’s not a done deal and there are other clubs in the race – this is why Tottenham want to be fast. As of now, the race is still open, but let’s see if Spurs can agree something for the summer for this top talent.

More smart transfer business by Borussia Dortmund

Both Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen have started well for Borussia Dortmund since joining on loan – it looks like excellent work in the transfer market, really. Bringing in Sancho and Maatsen means smart business, they are ready to make an impact and have completely refreshed the squad.

With Chelsea and Maatsen, I think he was already close to leaving last summer because they trust other players in that position including Ben Chilwell, and Maatsen wanted to play on regular basis. There is the option for Dortmund to make the deal permanent, let’s see if they decide to take it.

Fabrizio Romano has provided an exclusive transfer update on West Ham United and what we can expect from them as we edge closer to the end of January.

Speaking to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano explained that a move for West Ham to sign Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal now looks in doubt as the Gunners want to keep the player, though the Hammers have alternatives on their list.

Among those is Ajax star Steven Bergwijn, according to Romano, who also said that West Ham could be ones to watch in the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips before the transfer deadline.

It remains to be seen how easy it will be for West Ham to get their business done, however, as it looks like it will also depend on outgoings to help them stay in line with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Emile Smith Rowe looks set to stay at Arsenal despite West Ham links

Romano mentioned Said Benrahma as one example of a player the east Londoners may try to offload.

“Keep an eye on West Ham, though, as they keep pushing on that deal and they keep hoping Phillips will decide soon, but it’s not easy,” Romano said.

“Staying with West Ham, Arsenal said no to their approach over a loan move for Emile Smith Rowe. With West Ham in amongst the Premier League’s top six at present, the last thing that the club need is internal wrangling over a potential new signing.

David Moyes has ensured that the Irons have continued on their upward trajectory after winning the Europa Conference League last season, with the club also well placed in the Europa League.

One or two results and performances aside, the East Londoners have been pleasing on the eye and have delivered the necessary wins to keep the London Stadium faithful happy.

That said, it’s clear that they are still a player or two short of really pushing on and making the 2023/24 campaign another vintage one.

To that end, it’s understood that the club are interested in the services of Ajax captain and former Tottenham man, Steven Bergwijn.

However, it seems that Moyes is digging his heels in over any deal.

According to Football Insider‘s Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the outlet’s Inside Track podcast, the Scot isn’t sure about the £15m-rated winger, who already has eight goals and four assists to his name in a hugely underperforming Ajax squad.

Like some of the deals that the Hammers did in the summer, it’s believed that sporting director, Tim Steidten, is the one driving negotiations.

Whilst that will clearly put Moyes’ nose out of joint, it’s hard to argue with Steidten’s track record, given it’s believed he was behind the signings of Edson Alvarez and Mo Kudus, both of whom have settled brilliantly at the club.

After being sent off against Bristol City in the FA Cup, West Ham’s Said Benrahma could well have played his last game for the club.

The player has never really been given a decent run in the Hammers side under David Moyes, with WhoScored noting that he’s played 90 minutes this season in the Premier League on only one occasion – the opener against Bournemouth.

It seems clear that he doesn’t really feature in his manager’s plans, and if he were able to be offloaded in this window, it would give the East Londoners the chance to bid for one of their top targets.

“Benrahma’s move to Lyon could happen if they offer the right amount of money and the player wants to go,” CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano, told Give Me Sport.

“But it is not an easy situation for Lyon because the player is taking his time to decide whether to make the move. If Benrahma leaves the club, Steven Bergwijn could be an option. There is a possibility that he will sign because he is a top target for West Ham.”

It’s not clear whether Bergwijn would be amenable to a switch back to London in any event, and given that he’s Ajax club captain, they too may decide that he’s too important to be allowed to leave.

Of course money talks in the transfer window, and with his former colleagues, Mo Kudus and Edson Alvarez already at the club, there’s a possibility that such a move could actually appeal to the 26-year-old.

With only 12 days left before the window closes until the summer, everything would appear to hinge on whether Benrahma decides to move to Lyon on not.
