With a week to go until the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Newcastle United are still trying hard to improve their squad.

Ahead of what’s expected to be another gruelling campaign, Eddie Howe clearly isn’t 100 percent happy with his options, but the Magpies have had a second bid rejected for Crystal Palace and England international ace, Marc Guehi.

Guehi, 24, had a brilliant European Championship with the Three Lions and arguably put himself in the shop window, however, he also likely added a few more millions to his potential transfer fee.

Crystal Palace turn down Newcastle’s £50m bid for Marc Guehi

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle’s second bid for the player was £50m, but that’s way short of the Eagles valuation of £65m.

It isn’t clear at this point whether Howe and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) would be willing to risk upping their latest offer given that it could see them fall foul of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Marc Guehi is proving to be expensive for Newcastle
Marc Guehi is proving to be expensive for Newcastle

Having already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, playing hardball on a Guehi transfer is perfectly understandable from Oliver Glasner and owner, Steve Parish.

It’s all very well and good getting some decent money into club coffers, but the fact remains that these excellent players still have to be replaced.

After enjoying such a brilliant end to last season, one can imagine that Glasner is loathe to break up that team, who could power the Eagles to a top half finish in the forthcoming campaign.

Perhaps the will of the player will be the deciding factor in whether he continues plying his trade at Selhurst Park, or if he moves to St. James’ Park and a fresh start.

The 2024/25 Premier League season doesn’t kick off for another nine days, and Newcastle already have injury problems to contend with.

Eddie Howe’s side found themselves floundering in the Champions League and the English top-flight during 2023/24, after a series of injuries left them devoid of some of their top stars for significant periods.

Now that Callum Wilson is sidelined again, Eddie Howe doesn’t really have too many options other than to sign another front man in his stead.

To that end, Il Mattino are reporting that Salernitana’s Boulaye Dia could be a player of interest to the Magpies.

It’s believed that Dia wants to leave his current employers after they were relegated to Serie B, and though it’s unclear as to where he may end up, there is interest from Newcastle and other clubs.

Given Salernitana’s relegation, the Italians aren’t likely to be in the best position to be able to negotiate, and that offers Newcastle the opportunity to land the player for a knockdown price.

Eddie Howe provided an update on Alexander Isak’s fitness after the Swedish forward was forced off during his side’s pre-season friendly.

With the new Premier League season just around the corner, English teams are in the midst of their pre-season preparations as they ready themselves for another gruelling campaign.

Howe will be well aware of how strenuous a full season can be after he saw several key players consistently drop out of his squad last season after suffering from debilitating injuries.

Unfortunately for the England manager, he has another injury scare during the Magpies pre-season clash against Yokohama F. Marinos on Saturday during their pre-season tour.

Star forward Isak was forced off at the half-time break after clashing with the opposition goalkeeper and seemingly damaging his shoulder.

Speaking after the 2-0 loss, the English manager revealed that his substitution was a scheduled one and that he was fine to play the rest of the game.

“No, that was scheduled for him. Of course he went over on his shoulder early in the game, it was sore but he was fine to carry on.” He said via the Shields Gazette.

“We don’t envisage any problems but of course, we need to check out the mechanism and how his shoulder is but I think he looks okay.”

Newcastle will kick off their Premier League season against newly promoted Southampton on Saturday the 17th of August.

One of the quietest clubs in the transfer market so far this summer has been Liverpool, which could be considered a very worrying development by supporters.

The Reds are getting used to life under Arne Slot after the epic Jurgen Klopp era came to an end after the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

It may well be that the Dutchman wanted to understand what he already has available in situ before making any recommendations to the board as to which positions he believes need to be strengthened.

Liverpool could be out of luck in pursuit of England international

With almost a month left of the current window too, the Premier League giants still have ample time to get any deals over the line, so if there is any panic, it’s likely to come from an impatient fan base rather than inside the club.

According to The Athletic (subscription required), their pursuit of Newcastle ace, Anthony Gordon, could be destined to fail given that the Magpies are set to offer him a bumper new deal.

Liverpool target Anthony Gordon in action for England.

Designed to ward off potential suitors such as the Reds, whom The Athletic note that Gordon supported as a boy, it isn’t clear at this point if it will be enough to stop the attacker from being persuaded by Liverpool’s continuing overtures.

It’s understood that there’s no longer pressure on Newcastle to sell a major star because of Financial Fair Play, so one can infer that if any deal is to take place, it would be because Gordon himself is offering the Reds encouragement.

Nothing will happen until the England international returns from his holidays after his Euro 2024 exertions in any event.

Once back, it’s a foregone conclusion that Eddie Howe will want to sit Gordon down and understand his position.

If Howe doesn’t feel that the player is committed enough to the cause at St. James’ Park he could decide, regrettably, to let Gordon leave.

A ball hasn’t yet been kicked in the 2024/25 Premier League season, but North London giants, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, are already in a head-to-head battle.

According to well placed CaughtOffside sources, the reason for the same is that both clubs are keen to persuade the same target to join them this summer.

Wolves winger, Pedro Neto, despite proclaiming that he’s happy at the club, would earn them a cool £60m if they were to realise a sale, and he remains on the transfer list of the English top-flight giants.

Spurs coach, Ange Postecoglou, believes the Portuguese winger can be a very useful addition for Tottenham, and sources indicate that club representatives recently met with the player’s inner circle to receive information about his situation.

For his part, Mikel Arteta wants a winger to be signed who can provide back up to Bukayo Saka, and the Portuguese star fits that description.

Given that Neto appears ready to sign for a club where he can get guarantees of enough playing time, that would appear to rule out the Gunners if he’s only seen as a Saka substitute.

Both Spurs and Arsenal do have competition too. Newcastle United continue to be linked and the Magpies have already held talks with the player’s entourage.

Wolves are in no rush to sell, though an offer in the region of £55m-£60m will tempt them to think again.

Still time for North London giants to land Neto

If received early enough, it would also allow the Midlands-based outfit to strengthen in other areas of the squad.

Whilst that will appease the money men at the club, manager, Gary O’Neil, might not be as happy, given the amount of work Neto gets through in a game and the chances that he creates for himself and his team-mates.

With a few weeks left of the transfer window, there’s plenty of time to get a deal over the line.

After their 2-1 pre-season win over Arsenal, which included some wonderful passages of play from Liverpool, the Reds should be delighted with the way things have begun under Arne Slot.

The Dutchman is under the most severe scrutiny given that he’s the first to have followed Jurgen Klopp into the Anfield hot-seat.

He will have his own ideas of what he wants to see out on the pitch of course, and the quicker that his players in particular, but also the fans, get to grips with it and accept ‘Arne ball’ for want of a better phrase, the better for all concerned.

Liverpool appreciation of England international is strong

The one area that supporters might be worried about at present is the club’s distinct lack of transfer business during the current window.

It’s entirely possible of course that Slot has wanted to take his time to understand what areas, if any, need addressing, before presenting a case to the club’s board.

One player that would appear to be foremost in the thoughts of those in charge of recruitment is Newcastle ace, Anthony Gordon.

Rumours that the former Everton ace could be on his way back to Merseyside just won’t go away, and Fabrizio Romano advanced just how much he’s appreciated at Anfield.

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is liked by Liverpool.
Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is liked by Liverpool.

“Something more, guys, because I already told you two or three days ago that the appreciation of Liverpool for Anthony Gordon remains strong,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

“As of today, there is still no bid from Liverpool to Newcastle, so we can’t talk about the negotiation and we can’t confirm the situation now.

“What I can confirm, once again, is the appreciation of the player internally at Liverpool.

“In several meetings that the club have had, the name of Anthony Gordon has been discussed, and he’s really highly rated. Liverpool believe he’s a top, top player.”

It would appear that the Magpies have no need to sell now as their Financial Fair Play restrictions are believed to have eased.

If the player himself decides a move to the Reds is one he’d like to make, however, that would change the picture entirely.

Given his Everton past too, Gordon would be a brave man indeed to consider plying his trade on the other side of Stanley Park.

Kieran Trippier is set to rejoin the Newcastle United squad next week following his post-Euro 2024 summer break.

The 33-year-old defender helped the Three Lions reach the final in Germany over the summer and is yet to report back to club duties as he takes an extended rest.

However, Trippier caused a stir last week as he was spotted in Newcastle Airport on the Friday afternoon, checking into a flight to Dubai. The full-back then posted a photograph on Instagram with Al Ettifaq head of scouting Thomas Spring with the caption ‘good meeting’.

Spring has been with Al Ettifaq since January after leaving MLS side New York Red Bulls and worked for six years at Bournemouth during Eddie Howe’s time on the south coast.

Trippier — who earns £120k per week according to Capology — has been heavily linked with a transfer to the Saudi Pro League this summer but according to Howe, the player’s meeting purely on a ‘personal’ basis.

“It is difficult for me to comment on,” said Howe (via the Shields Gazette). “For Kieran, he is on holiday and he is having down time after exploits with the national team. Yeah, he has total freedom to enjoy his holiday. The picture in question is a personal relationship, I don’t think it is related to any club.”

Trippier is due to link back up with the Newcastle squad upon their return from a week-long tour of Tokyo.

Asked if Trippier will be back with his teammates next week, Howe responded: “Yeah, absolutely.”

Liverpool enjoyed a pre-season victory over Premier League rivals Arsenal overnight, and Arne Slot would surely have been pleased by what he saw from his players.

The Dutchman has come into the club as the replacement for Jurgen Klopp, and many would say that he’s on a hiding to nothing, given how popular the German was during his tenure at Anfield.

He’s already shown the supporters that he can get a tune out of essentially the same squad that he inherited, without yet adding to what he already has in situ.

Liverpool still want Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon

With only a fortnight left before the 2024/25 season kicks off in earnest, but a month until the transfer window closes, Slot has to decide if he wants the club to try and bring in new players before the first fixture, or to leave things until the 11th hour but with an idea of what positions he wants covering.

According to Fabrizio Romano, there’s one controversial deal that could still take place if the conditions are right.

Liverpool are still interested in Anthony Gordon
Liverpool are still interested in Anthony Gordon

“I’m receiving lots of questions on Anthony Gordon guys, but I was only told that Liverpool discussed several potential swap deals in June, not the specific values that have been mentioned elsewhere in the media,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

“I don’t have confirmation on the numbers being talked about but, for sure Liverpool wanted Gordon and they remain interested in the player, considering him an excellent winger.

“Let’s see what Liverpool will do this month, but appreciation for Gordon remains; I’m 100% sure of that.”

News of the Reds continued interest in Gordon is bound to concern Newcastle supporters, and fans of the player’s former club, Everton, aren’t likely to be too enamoured either.

At present the status quo hasn’t changed and the England ace remains on Tyneside, with Eddie Howe arguably hoping he can still call upon the services of the player in a month’s time once the window has closed for business.

The choice of who will replace Gareth Southgate as England men’s first-team coach has long been a subject of much conjecture, and one of the favourites, Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe, has now made a definitive decision.

After such a turnaround in the Magpies fortunes over the past couple of years, it’s clear that former Bournemouth manager, Howe, will be a huge loss to the club.

The team play in his image, and the front-foot attacking style that has become their hallmark, is in stark contrast to the boring fare that was routinely served up by Steve Bruce’s men.

Once Mike Ashley sold out to the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Bruce was replaced by Howe, things were only ever going to be transformed in a positive manner.

Fortunately for fans of the club, that all seems set to continue.

“I have had no contact whatsoever from anybody [regarding the England job],” Howe was reported by The Mag as saying.

“I am fully committed to Newcastle United. There is nothing to talk about. I do not need to address the players. They know by how I act.

“They can see how I am on a daily basis, to see how committed I am to the club.”

Newcastle United are in the market for a new centre-back and one name the Magpies remain linked with is AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, a player Eddie Howe is “absolutely in love” with.

Newcastle head into the 2024/25 campaign short of centre-back options as both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles suffered long-term knee injuries towards the end of last season. The Tyneside outfit have already brought in Lloyd Kelly but Howe would like another defender to arrive.

The English coach is said to be “absolutely in love” with Milan’s Malick Thiaw and has wanted the 22-year-old for over a year, says transfer expert Matteo Moretto.

The German star has a contract at the San Siro until 2027 and is believed to be happy in Milan, however, he is aware that the Serie A giants are open to selling him if a good offer arrives. The Italian club are willing to part ways with Thiaw if a bid of around €30m/€35m arrives but as of now, Newcastle have yet to submit an official proposal for the centre-back.

The German star has been an important player for Milan since he arrived in 2022 and if an offer doesn’t come in for the defender, the Serie A giants will be more than happy to keep him for another season.

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe is a huge fan of AC Milan star Malick Thiaw

Writing in his latest exclusive column for CaughtOffside’s The Daily Briefing, Moretto has made clear how Newcastle manager Eddie Howe feels about Thiaw as a player and it is obvious, that the English coach is a big fan.

“The Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is absolutely in love with Malick Thiaw. But he has wanted him for the last year, for a long time,” the transfer journalist said.

“As things stand, there are no talks between the clubs, and no official offer. AC Milan are willing to listen to offers for €30m/€35m, and while Thiaw is happy in Milan, he knows that if a good offer comes in for him, then they will listen to it.

“We shall have to see if in the coming weeks Newcastle make an offer, he has a big fan in Howe, but there’s no confirmation that they will even move for him. I know that Newcastle have a shortlist of three central defenders. Thiaw is one of them, but internally, they are still evaluating which one to go for.”
