With a week to go until the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Newcastle United are still trying hard to improve their squad.

Ahead of what’s expected to be another gruelling campaign, Eddie Howe clearly isn’t 100 percent happy with his options, but the Magpies have had a second bid rejected for Crystal Palace and England international ace, Marc Guehi.

Guehi, 24, had a brilliant European Championship with the Three Lions and arguably put himself in the shop window, however, he also likely added a few more millions to his potential transfer fee.

Crystal Palace turn down Newcastle’s £50m bid for Marc Guehi

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle’s second bid for the player was £50m, but that’s way short of the Eagles valuation of £65m.

It isn’t clear at this point whether Howe and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) would be willing to risk upping their latest offer given that it could see them fall foul of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Marc Guehi is proving to be expensive for Newcastle
Marc Guehi is proving to be expensive for Newcastle

Having already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, playing hardball on a Guehi transfer is perfectly understandable from Oliver Glasner and owner, Steve Parish.

It’s all very well and good getting some decent money into club coffers, but the fact remains that these excellent players still have to be replaced.

After enjoying such a brilliant end to last season, one can imagine that Glasner is loathe to break up that team, who could power the Eagles to a top half finish in the forthcoming campaign.

Perhaps the will of the player will be the deciding factor in whether he continues plying his trade at Selhurst Park, or if he moves to St. James’ Park and a fresh start.

The Everton takeover scenario appears to have gone on for an age, but help could be at hand which might finally bring an end to the issues that have dogged the Toffees under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri.

Fined for breaching Financial Fair Play rules, the Merseyside outfit have also been languishing at the wrong end of the Premier League table for far too long.

In short, Everton are a club in desperate need of a decent cash injection and the right owner being at the helm.

Crystal Palace part-owner John Textor could be Everton’s saviour

That’s where Crystal Palace come in.

According to The Guardian (subscription required), businessman, John Textor, who currently owns 45 percent of the South London club, is interested in steering Everton into a new era.

With a brand new stadium to move into shortly, it could be an opportune time for Textor to invest, but in order to do so, he would need to sell his stake in Palace.

2024/25 will be Everton's last season at Goodison Park, and Crystal Palace part-winer, John Textor, could be about to take them into a new era on and off the pitch.
2024/25 will be Everton’s last season at Goodison Park, and Crystal Palace part-winer, John Textor, could be about to take them into a new era on and off the pitch.

On the face of it, given that Palace are on the up, selling up would appear to be an odd decision from Textor, particularly if he’s to move to a club that are in dire financial straits.

However, the businessman clearly sees a way in which he can lead Everton back to their former glories, and ownership would also afford him a majority stake in the Goodison Park outfit.

Given that, with respect, Everton have been historically considered as a bigger club than Palace too, it may well be that Textor’s potential investment will be the shrewdest piece of football business that he’s done to date.

With the 2023/24 Premier League season about to start, the sooner that any deal can be agreed, the better for all concerned.

Oliver Glasner will surely be hoping that his Crystal Palace side begin the 2024/25 Premier League season as they ended the last campaign.

In their final seven games of 2023/24, they won six and drew one of those matches, and they included wins over Liverpool (0-1), West Ham (5-2), Newcastle (2-0), Manchester United (4-0), Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-3) and Aston Villa (5-0).

Such a magnificent run of form in the forthcoming campaign will arguably put the Eagles in amongst those clubs challenging for Europe, though they might find life difficult having lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich and, potentially, Marc Guehi to Newcastle.

Although the South London outfit have been fairly quiet in the transfer market this summer, they have still acquired the likes of Chadi Riad, Ismaila Sarr and Daichi Kamada, all of whom will improve what Glasner had in situ.

News that a move for former club legend, Wilfried Zaha, was also on the cards would likely have had Palace fans salivating.

Wilfried Zaha’s Crystal Palace return not going ahead at present

Despite only playing a handful of games Zaha won the Turkish Super Lig title with Galatasaray, though it does now seem he is surplus to requirements.

Palace were known to be interested, but as CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, advance on Friday evening, the move is currently off.

At 31 years of age, Zaha has lost none of the skills that made him a legend at Selhurst Park, and a return would’ve at least taken the edge off of losing Olise.

With three weeks still to go in the transfer market, there could be an opportunity to resurrect the deal, though it isn’t clear what has caused the impasse.

Leicester City are also understood to want to hijack Palace’s move for their former ace, which could really complicate matters as far as Glasner and owner Steve Parish are concerned.

Oliver Glasner will hope that he can begin the 2024/25 Premier League season with Crystal Palace as he ended their previous campaign.

The Eagles really were flying high with superb victories over the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United, West Ham United and others.

A high press and a front foot style was evidently manna from heaven for Glasner’s group of players, as they attacked every game with verve and vigour.

Crystal Palace set for epic reunion

After losing Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, and with potential losses of Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi to contend with, one could forgive Eagles fans for being a little downhearted.

However, CaughtOffside sources understand that the club are set to make a sensational move to bring a crowd favourite back to the club.

Although Galatasaray’s demand for approximately £6m/£7m as a loan fee are affecting the transfer process for Wilfred Zaha, sources indicate that the Turkish giants are open to selling the winger back to Palace permanently for a fee in the region of £20m – and the South Londoners aren’t averse to the latter scenario.

Wilfried Zaha back to Crystal Palace?
Wilfried Zaha back to Crystal Palace?

Indeed, CaughtOffside sources understand that Palace are willing to pay the permanent transfer fee though they will have to be on their toes.

Leicester City, Everton, Al-Nassr and Napoli have all expressed an interest in Zaha’s services too.

Zaha is fondly remembered as an important player in the Palace’s history, and the chance to reunite him with some of his former Selhurst Park team-mates may be too tempting for the 31-year-old to resist.

As the clock continues to tick in the current transfer window, and with the start of the league campaign just over a week away, the quicker any deal can be signed and sealed, the better for all concerned.

With pre-season already having started for Premier League clubs, there’s no time to waste in terms of transfers in and out, with one Crystal Palace ace the subject of interest from a number of clubs.

The Eagles have been transformed under Oliver Glasner, and if they can begin the 2024/25 campaign in the way that they ended 2023/24, there’s no telling how far they can go under the Austrian.

Certainly the likes of in-form Aston Villa, Liverpool, Newcastle, West Ham and others couldn’t live with them in the latter stages of last season.

Their brand of football was intense, exciting and goal-laden, and it’s no wonder that the supporters came flooding back to pack Selhurst Park to the rafters.

Odsonne Eduoard set to leave Crystal Palace

One player that unfortunately didn’t get much of a look in was Odsonne Edouard, the hot shot’s form falling off a cliff and seeing to it that he only played 90 minutes once since mid-October per WhoScored.

Scoring only one goal since early December tells its own story too, particular when compared with Jean-Philippe Mateta, who bagged 19 goals across the season including 10 in his last eight games (WhoScored), evidencing his suitability to Glasner’s way of playing.

CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, noted that it could well be time for Palace to cut their ties with Edouard, and there are several clubs interested in his services.

It isn’t clear how much the Eagles will demand for the former Celtic striker, however, there doesn’t appear to be much chance that he will get to make his mark again at his current club, and therefore a move makes sense for all parties.

The European Championship has, as always, shone a light on the performances of a handful of players, with one Premier League ace in particular really coming to the fore.

As England have wearily dragged themselves to the final of the tournament, so Marc Guehi’s star has been in the ascendency.

How to buy tickets for England vs Spain

The Crystal Palace man has been a revelation at the back for the national team, and despite the Three Lions labouring in a number of games played, the defender’s form has been excellent.

It’s no wonder that he remains so sought after.

“Marc Guehi has been excellent for England during the Euros and many clubs have been scouting him this season, but at the moment nothing is concrete yet,” Fabrizio Romano said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

Marc Guehi in action for Crystal Palace

“For example, around March Liverpool asked about his situation but didn’t follow up with proposals or negotiations.

“I can guarantee that as of today, it remains a calm situation to be discussed later in the window.”

It isn’t clear at this point if Guehi himself is absolutely ready to move on, though in light of Michael Olise’s swith to Bayern Munich, it wouldn’t be a surprise to understand that Guehi would consider his options.

Palace chairman, Steve Parish, and first-team manager, Oliver Glasner, won’t want to lose two of the club’s best players in the same window, but if Guehi does eventually make it clear he’d like to move on to pastures new, then the best that Eagles fans can hope for is that profit is maximised by the club.

With an epic Euro 2024 final in prospect against favourites, Spain, Guehi can really cement his international legacy with another standout 90 minutes.

He’s been one of the revelations of Euro 2024, and Crystal Palace and England defender, Marc Guehi, could well be said to have been putting in some ‘shop window’ performances for his country.

It’s believed that the 23-year-old was considering his club future before flying out to Germany with the national team, and the standard of his performances during the tournament will have certainly got a few clubs taking notice.

Whilst the Eagles wouldn’t necessarily welcome any bids for their player, especially in light of recently losing Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, Stan Collymore believes that Palace will cope with the loss of both players.

How to buy tickets for England vs Spain

“If Crystal Palace can bring in up to £100m in sales over the next two or three years, with a progressive coach and an academy that continues to produce good players, they’ll be very happy,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“They’ll look at the situation and say that ideally they’d have liked to build like Brighton or other progressive clubs have, get some success and into Europe before having to start to shed our players.

“When you are seen as a mid-table ‘smaller’ club you are going to have other people look at your players, and to lose Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in the same window would be concerning – but the reality is it doesn’t matter.

Crystal Palace don't need to worry if they lose Marc Guehi says Stan Collymore.
Crystal Palace don’t need to worry if they lose Marc Guehi says Stan Collymore.

“However, they’ve got a state of the art training facility and still have plenty of very good players. I mean, we haven’t even mentioned Adam Wharton and I don’t think they’d let him go.

“If Crystal Palace get some decent money in, Steve Parish can ask himself the question as to whether he has somebody that he would trust to spend it wisely, and in Oliver Glasner, yes, the manager has done very well so far. He looks like somebody that’s going to be there for the longer term.

“So this isn’t Roy Hodgson that’s being given a war chest of £70m, they’ve got a young, vibrant manager with a very, very good style of play who, if you gave him the resources, will ensure Crystal Palace go from strength to strength.”

Indeed, as Glasner showed at the end of the 2023/24 season, his Palace side can beat anyone on their day.

Winning six of their last seven matches, they took three points off the likes of Liverpool – at Anfield, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa.

As long as chairman, Steve Parish, continues to back his man in the transfer market, then Glasner has every chance of creating something special in South London.

Guehi might not want to be part of that but it could end up being his loss as the grass isn’t always greener.

Things have been on the up for Crystal Palace of late, both on and off the pitch.

The hire of Oliver Glasner has turned out to be a master stroke, with the only real issue being that the season ended too early for the Eagles last season. Glasner was just getting warmed up.

His teams were playing some sparkling stuff as they dismantled West Ham, Aston Villa, Man United and Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, and took all three points from Liverpool at Anfield.

Crystal Palace’s training ground neighbours are not happy

Recognition of just how well the team have been playing was provided when all of Adam Wharton, Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Dean Henderson were selected by former Palace captain and now England manager, Gareth Southgate, for his squad for Euro 2024.

No club has more players in the squad, which is an incredible vote of confidence for what Palace are doing down in South London.

Crystal Palace's training ground neighbours are furious with club plans
Crystal Palace’s training ground neighbours are furious with club plans

However, not everyone is happy about the club’s relative success. At least not the neighbours to the club’s Academy ground in Copers Cope Road.

A densely populated residential area in Beckenham, there are apparently already enough traffic problems in the area when Palace’s youth teams are playing at weekends, or training of a summer evening.

Now, the News Shopper are reporting on Palace’s plans to have floodlights installed which would allow them to host midweek evening matches at the venue.

That’s clearly a step too far for the locals, and 48 of them have apparently raised objections.

They are citing the dangers of the road being extremely busy already at certain times of the day and evening, with parents and their children apparently not allowed into the training complex and who wait outside on the pavements.

It’s clearly an emotive subject and one that could have a really negative impact on the club.

Crystal Palace appear set for an interesting transfer window after it emerged that Michael Olise has a verbal agreement with Premier League rivals, Chelsea.

The player had been close to joining the Blues once before, only for Eagles owner, Steve Parish, to persuade him that his future lay at Selhurst Park.

Just 10 months ago, Sky Sports were reporting that Chelsea had activated Olise’s £35m release clause, only for him to then sign a new four-year deal with Palace.

Chelsea set to land Michael Olise… 10 months later

That’s been shown to not be worth the paper it’s written on, as Give Me Sport sources note that the player is once again edging towards a move to Stamford Bridge – though Man United also remain an interested party.

Under Oliver Glasner, the South London outfit have really been going places.

They lost just three games under the Austrian at the back end of 2023/24, winning six of their last seven Premier League matches according to WhoScored.

Chelsea have agreed a verbal deal with Michael Olise
Michael Olise to Chelsea or Manchester United?

Those games included a victory over Liverpool at Anfield, a 5-2 demolition of West Ham, a 2-0 win over Newcastle, a 4-0 victory over Man United and a final day thumping of Aston Villa 5-0.

That would suggest that, perhaps, Olise is only intent on moving to Stamford Bridge for the money, because Glasner showed in the short space of time he worked with the player and his team-mates last season that he was able to get each and every one playing well above themselves.

With a couple of studious transfer window buys, there’s no reason why Palace can’t improve on the past few seasons in terms of where they’ll finish in the Premier League.

Todd Boehly has seemingly endless riches with which to be able to land whomever he or his manager chooses and, at present, even with the threat of Financial Fair Play regulations hanging over them, the club are clearly going to be at the forefront of any transfer deals this summer.

Newcastle United could be set to receive a financial fair play (FFP) boost that would give them much more spending power this summer.

The Magpies now hold lofty ambitions after their Saudi takeover in 2021, competing in the Champions League this season for the first time since 2003/04.

But despite now being among the richest clubs in the world, Newcastle’s spending has been restricted due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

According to a CIES Football Observatory analysis, Newcastle’s squad is the least sustainable in the English top flight right now and it’s understood that they must make sales and generate more income in order to unlock more spending power.

Things could get even more difficult with the Premier League set to announce even more stringent rules that would limit spending to up to 85% of a club’s turnover on signings, wages and agent fees — a move that has been criticised by clubs looking to break into England’s elite.

Premier League opponent could give Newcastle financial boost

According to a report from the Times, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has proposed an alternative system that raises the limit for acceptable losses over a three-year period from £105m to £135m.

Palace’s proposal would, in theory, offer more flexibility around spending and financial losses to clubs like Aston Villa and Newcastle, who have broken into the Champions League picture over the last couple of years.

Premier League clubs are required to vote on Parish’s proposal next week and if approved, it would, in theory, give Newcastle an extra £30m to spend in this summer’s transfer window.
