Newcastle United may turn to Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga in their search for a new right winger, according to reports.

Even should they keep hold of Anthony Gordon this summer, the Magpies are short on options in wide areas with Harvey Barnes and the out-of-favour Ryan Fraser the only senior wingers on the books.

Elanga impressed at Forest last season following his £15m (per BBC Sport) summer arrival from Manchester United, notching five goals and nine assists in 36 Premier League appearances, while he was first among his teammates for carries into the opposition penalty area (42).

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are ‘admirers’ of Elanga and are already in talks with Forest over a potential deal.

Could Anthony Elanga join Newcastle United?

The two clubs have already conducted business this summer, with Elliot Anderson moving to the City Ground and goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos moving in the opposite direction.

Football Insider’s report also names West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen as another potential target, but Newcastle — whose first choice target this summer was thought to be Michael Olise, who left Crystal Palace for Bayern Munich — have been put off by the Hammers’ £100m valuation.

The Magpies have also spoken with Chelsea over a possible deal for English winger Noni Madueke, but no bid has yet come forth.

There’s been lots going on behind the scenes at Newcastle United of late, not least the restructuring that needed to occur once Dan Ashworth departed the club.

Eddie Howe’s position remains unaffected, though it’s likely he’ll want some guarantees that the way of working that he enjoyed under Ashworth continues with new sporting director, Paul Mitchell.

If not, there’s every chance that Howe could listen to the overtures from the Football Association regarding the England job.

Newcastle want Anthony Elanga

For now, he remains fully committed to life at St. James’ Park, and CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of the club’s transfer plans have indicated that the club remain interested in Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga.

The 22-year-old Swedish winger, formerly at Man United, is likely to be available for in the region of £40m-£45m, and it’s understood that Howe thinks Elanga could be utilised as Anthony Gordon’s understudy.

Anthony Elanga is wanted by Newcastle
Anthony Elanga is wanted by Newcastle

He is particularly interested in Elanga’s ability to play as a reverse winger on the right, and with ongoing interest from Liverpool in Gordon, it may be that Elanga quickly becomes a first choice for the club in the position.

Newcastle are also ready to listen to offers for Miguel Almiron, though nothing acceptable has been offered to the club at this point.

With the start of the Premier League season just over three weeks away, it’s important for Newcastle and any other club with transfer business to be conducted, to get it done as soon as practicable.

Bringing new players in right on top of the start of the season, or worse when the campaign has already kicked off, is bound to upset team equilibrium, so the sooner Newcastle can execute certain deals, the better.

The forthcoming season is a vitally important one for both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, but for differing reasons.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side managed to escape relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, ending the campaign on 32 points and just one place above the bottom three.

In a sign of the direction that English football is heading, the three clubs that went down – Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United – were the three clubs that had come up 12 months previously.

Newcastle looking at Forest’s Antony Elanga

If Forest don’t want to become another ‘yo yo’ club, then they’ll need to significantly up their game in 2024/25, and they’ll be better placed to do that if they’e able to keep hold of such talents as Anthony Elanga.

Unfortunately, according to TeamTalk, Newcastle are targeting the star to replace the outgoing Miggy Almiron.

Newcastle are looking at Anthony Elanga

Although Elanga is still learning his craft and as such is a little ‘raw,’ his natural pace and eye for goal would make him an asset for the Magpies, particularly given that Eddie Howe likes to have his wide men on the front foot in games.

It isn’t clear at this point whether Forest would accede to any transfer though, given how hard Elanga has worked for them since his move from Man United.

At just 22 years of age, the Swedish international would surely be able to command a significant fee from interested parties, and that could be something to sway the Forest hierarchy given that they could invest the monies into other areas of the squad.

The last thing that anyone connected with the club is likely to want is another relegation battle during the 2024/25 season.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle firm up any interest in the first instance, and if so, whether their offer is enough to tempt Forest into selling.

“For me is such a worry…” – Gary Neville questions Manchester United’s transfer policy https://www.caughtoffside.com/2023/12/30/1565542/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 20:32:13 +0000 https://www.caughtoffside.com/?p=1565542 Gary Neville has raised questions about Manchester United’s choice to sell Anthony Elanga, the Nottingham Forest winger who showcased an impressive performance against his former club, contributing to a 2-1 victory. Gary Neville has raised questions about Manchester United’s choice to sell Anthony Elanga, the Nottingham Forest winger who showcased an impressive performance against his former club, contributing to a 2-1 victory.

Anthony Elanga, the Sweden international, was considered surplus to requirements in the summer, despite playing a significant role during the early stages of Erik ten Hag’s tenure. Elanga, who was acquired by Forest for just £15 million, expressed a desire to leave in pursuit of regular first-team football. Despite his new side’s struggles, he has managed to enhance his reputation through noteworthy performances.

The decision to part ways with Elanga has sparked scrutiny from the football pundit.

“You have to question whether he’s better than some of the ones he’s left behind. The money they’ve spent in wide areas. Sancho was £70-odd million, Antony £90m and Elanga gone!”

The rapid improvement of the 21-year-old has heightened scrutiny on Manchester United’s decision to make substantial investments in players like Antony and Jadon Sancho, whilst allowing an academy graduate to depart for a relatively modest fee.

The contrast in these decisions has drawn attention and raised questions about the club’s transfer strategy.

Jadon Sancho, the England international, has spent the majority of the season in exile, having reportedly refused to apologise to his manager for a previous incident. This situation has kept him on the sidelines and away from regular first-team action.

Antony, on the other hand, had a short-lived appearance at the City Ground, lasting only 54 minutes before succumbing to injury. He concluded 2023 with just one club goal to his name. In contrast, Anthony Elanga played a crucial role in both of Nottingham Forest’s goals, contributing significantly to Nuno Espirito Santo’s first home win in charge of the Tricky Trees.

The contrasting performances add to the discussions around Manchester United’s decision-making in player transfers.

Manchester United fans are fuming as Anthony Elanga continues to impress at his new club Nottingham Forest this season.

The young Swedish winger had some opportunities during his time at Old Trafford, but didn’t really do much to impress, though it now perhaps seems clear he could have done with a bit more playing time.

Elanga is now finding his feet with Forest and it seems clear he is the real deal at Premier League level, with many Red Devils fans expressing their regret about the sale on X today.

Watching Elanga in action for Forest in today’s game against Newcastle, the consensus seems to be that he’s improved a lot since leaving United, and it may be that this ends up being a decision that Erik ten Hag lives to regret…

Elanga will now just be hoping he can continue to shine at Forest and help them away from the relegation zone in the weeks and months ahead.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s debut in the Nottingham Forest dugout ended in heartbreak as Bournemouth secured a pulsating 3-2 Premier League win over the 10-man Tricky Trees at the City Ground.

Despite efforts from Anthony Elanga and Chris Wood seemingly rescuing a point for the hosts, Dominic Solanke’s brilliant hat-trick, including an injury-time header, left Nottingham Forest crestfallen.

Despite an early onslaught from Nottingham Forest, with Wood and Elanga testing Neto, Bournemouth weathered the storm and started posing threats. In the 14th minute, the red-hot Dominic Solanke came close to opening the scoring but narrowly missed the near post.

Controversy emerged at the City Ground as, with 24 minutes gone, Willy Boly, who had already been booked in the first five minutes, received a red card for a challenge on Adam Smith. While Boly’s tackle was mostly clean, the referee deemed it worthy of a red card, and Nuno Espirito Santo responded by substituting Divock Origi for Moussa Niakhate. Lewis Cook’s injury led to an early change for Bournemouth, with Alex Scott coming on.

In the 37th minute, there was a potential penalty shout for Forest as Smith blocked a Harry Toffolo cross with his outstretched arm. VAR couldn’t definitively determine whether the arm was inside or outside the box. Despite Forest holding out until halftime, the under-fire referee, Rob Jones, faced boos from the crowd.

The City Ground’s elation returned two minutes into the second half when Chris Wood set up Anthony Elanga, and his first-time strike found the bottom corner. However, the joy was short-lived as Marcos Senesi delivered a sublime cross for Dominic Solanke four minutes later, and his looping header sailed over Matt Turner into the side of the net, securing his ninth top-flight goal of the season.

Dominic Solanke continued his impressive form, scoring his second goal of the match just seven minutes after his first. Billing’s header fell kindly for Solanke, who exploited an unawares Forest backline to slide home into the bottom corner, reaching double figures for the Premier League campaign.

In the 74th minute, 10-man Forest drew level as Chris Wood’s header from a Gibbs-White corner somehow found its way into the net. Forest continued to press, with Gibbs-White’s curler cleared off the line by Ouattara in the 81st minute, moments before Bournemouth hit the post through David Brooks.

As the match seemed destined for a draw, Solanke secured his hat-trick in injury time, meeting a Smith delivery with a stunning header from 12 yards. The Forest goalkeeper could only push Solanke’s header into the roof of the net, sealing Bournemouth’s fifth win from six games and lifting them to 11th place. Nuno Espirito Santo’s Forest, on the other hand, are now just two points clear of the relegation zone in 17th.

Both teams will have Boxing Day fixtures, with Forest hosting Newcastle United at the City Ground, and Bournemouth welcoming Fulham on the South Coast.

The difference in quality between Man City and Man United at present is cavernous.

A gap of nine points between the two sides doesn’t tell the full story, with the 3-0 Manchester derby win by City a more accurate reflection of the problems that the Red Devils have to contend with at present.

Erik ten Hag simply doesn’t have the charisma or authority that Pep Guardiola has, and if you’re a player looking to move to either of those clubs, it’s no real contest as to which one players would choose at present.

United’s exciting 18-year-old, Kobbie Mainoo, appears to be bucking the trend, however.

Kobbie Mainoo in action for Manchester United

The youngster, described as “the next star” by former team-mate, Anthony Elanga, who also noted that “his talent is unreal” according to an interview given to the Daily Mail (h/t Fabrizio Romano), is said to be happy at Old Trafford.

Indeed, 90Min report that the player is under contract at United until 2027 and the club aren’t concerned by City’s interest at all given the player’s happiness with his current circumstances.

Keeping hold of Mainoo could be one of the club’s best pieces of recent business and will go some way to lifting the dark clouds that have been enveloping Old Trafford of late.

Now over a recent injury, the teenager could even feature against Fulham this weekend.

Anthony Elanga has given Nottingham Forest a lead at Stamford Bridge after a clumsy error from Chelsea’s record signing Caicedo.

A heavy touch from the £115m man and a mix up between him and Gallagher allowed Taiyo Awoniyi to pick up the ball and race at Thiago Silva eluding a couple of challenge before sliding the ball through to Elanga.

The substitute stays calm and strikes it past Sanchez into the bottom corner.

Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of Anthony Elanga from Man United on a five-year deal.

The Sweden international has signed a contract at The City Ground until the summer of 2028 and moves as part of a £15m deal between the two Premier League clubs.

This move is a significant one for the winger as it keeps him playing at a high level whilst also gaining more minutes for his development. The 21-year-old already arrives at Forest with a good amount of experience under his belt having already played and scored in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League in 55 appearances for Man United.

Anthony Elanga comments on his move to Nottingham Forest

Speaking about his latest transfer to Forest, Anthony Elanga told the club’s media team: “It’s a pleasure to be here. It’s a proud moment, not only for me but for my family as well.

“It’s the perfect next step for me in my career, it’s a big step and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the Forest fans at The City Ground.

“I had interest from elsewhere, but for me, Nottingham Forest feels like the perfect place.”

“I’ve been here with United, and from the minute I stepped out for the warm-up, I could hear them from the changing room,” the winger continued.

“It’s a special place, but being here with Forest, I feel like it will be even more special.

“I’m really ready for the challenge and I just want to embrace everything and get to work.”

Man United duo Dean Henderson and Anthony Elanga look to be heading to the same Premier League club this summer after official bids have been submitted to the Manchester club.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest have submitted two bids to Manchester United for the duo as they look to add the talented pair to their squad for the upcoming season.

A loan deal looks to be in place for Henderson, whilst Forest’s move for Elanga will be a permanent one – with the Premier League club said to be closing in on the United winger.

Nottingham Forest want to get both deals done soon, as they will most likely want the players to join them for the rest of their pre-season plans.

The signing of Andre Onana would have killed Henderson’s hopes of being Man United’s number one next season following the exit of David de Gea and a move back to Nottingham is a good decision.

As for Elanga, the winger is not a key part of Ten Hag’s plans next season, and having shown on occasions to be an impressive talent, the 21-year-old needs to be getting regular football in order to progress further.
