Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has confirmed the club’s interest in veteran German defender Mats Hummels and believes they may have the edge in negotiations.

The 35-year-old was one of the stars for Borussia Dortmund last season as they reached the Champions League final.

However, the veteran was unable to stop Dortmund from succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid at Wembley, with second-half goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr settling the tie.

Hummels — a 78-time Germany international and 2014 World Cup winner — left Dortmund at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract.

Naturally given his quality and experience, Hummels is in high demand as a free agent and AC Milan were the first major European side to be linked with his signature earlier in the summer.

More recently, West Ham United were revealed as another potential suitor for Hummels, who is a five-time Bundesliga champion with Dortmund and Bayern Munich combined.

Brighton to sign Hummels?

West Ham recently completed the signing of French defender Jean-Clair Todibo on loan from Nice, making a swoop for Hummels more unlikely.

Brighton are the latest club heavily linked with his signature and German manager Fabian Hürzeler was asked recently about the club’s interest.

Hürzeler has given a very honest outline of the Seagulls’ stance and even hinted that he may have the edge in negotiations because of his personal relationship with Hummels and his family.

“We have mutual respect and had good conversations, and at the end of the day, the player has to decide whether he can commit to the club 100%,” said Hürzeler (via Get Football News Germany).

“I have a connection with the Hummels family for quite some time, which started back during my time at Bayern Munich. So the foundation is always there when I deal with the Hummels family.”

Brighton and Hove Albion have rightly been lauded for their transfer business over the past few seasons.

Though the Seagulls have still sold on some of their best players, they’ve done so at a huge profit which has allowed them to strengthen elsewhere.

Developing young players has become their forte, and that perhaps explains why the Premier League outfit have agreed a deal for Gothenburg’s 18-year-old player Malick Junior Yalcouye.

Brighton agree deal for Malick Junior Yalcouye

CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of the deal recognised that both Bayern Munich and Manchester United were two of the first teams to be monitoring the player’s movements, though an official offer from the two European giants wasn’t forthcoming.

Similarly, Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven registered an interest but nothing more.

Gent, Ajax and Brentford’s interest in Malick Junior Yalcouye was more concrete, but all three have been beaten to the punch by Brighton.

Brighton will sign Malick Junior Yalcouye

It’s understood that the club will pay €10m for his services, and he will be offered a five-year contract.

Brighton directors had been impressed by the Ivory Coast player’s abilities but were waiting for a new coach to be unveiled before making their move.

With Fabian Hurzeler having been secured as Roberto De Zerbi’s replacement, the young German is readying himself for his first pre-season in English football, and he’ll now be able to call upon the services of Malick Junior Yalcouye as needed.

It remains an exciting time for a club that continue to exceed all expectations, and it will be interesting to see if the Hurzeler experiment is as successful as those of Graham Potter and De Zerbi.

Brave of Brighton to appoint Fabian Hürzeler – but a good idea

The appointment of Fabian Hürzeler is a brave one, absolutely.

Of course there’s risk but it’s Brighton style, to go for talented and young people. I think it’s good idea to follow their plans, their style.

Hürzeler did excellent at St Pauli so he has all the possibility and potential to shine also in the Premier League.

Patience will be needed, of course.

Morata wants Serie A return but Torres and Williams are happy in Spain

Álvaro Morata would like to return to Italian football, for sure. Nothing is happening now because he’s focused on the Euros, but there could be movement between July and August with Serie A the likely destination if there will be proposals.

He’s open to leaving Atlético Madrid because they’re already in talks for other strikers, Artem Dovbyk being one of them.

Sticking with La Liga, I’m not aware of any bid from Newcastle for Barcelona’s Ferran Torres, despite the reports.

He’s happy at Barcelona, not in negotiations with any club at the moment so completely quiet. If something changes we will see, but at the moment no negotiations are taking place for Torres.

The situation is the same with Athletic Club’s Nico Williams. Completely quiet at the moment, full focus on the Euros. There’s a release clause around €58m, so clubs are informed.

But again, Nico is happy in Bilbao and any club should pay big money to the player also, in terms of salary package.

Terzić bows out and De Zerbi set to sign in

After Manchester United decided to keep Erik ten Hag as their coach, what’s important to say today is that it’s over between Borussia Dortmund and Edin Terzić.

After the Champions League final and because of many problems internally he decided to leave the club. Among the big favourites to become the new manager is Nuri Şahin.

I will say almost a here we go for Olympique Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi too. There is an agreement on a three-year deal, and everything is fixed between De Zerbi and Marseille, just waiting just on some final details.

What is needed now is just an agreement between Marseille and Brighton.

Chelsea pushing hard for Michael Olise

We mentioned Michael Olise in October, in November, in December, and in the recent months he has become a target again for Chelsea and Manchester United.

Chelsea have always been there and some people on the board consider Olise a fantastic player. This is why Chelsea have approached Crystal Palace formally to ask about the release clause. They want to understand how it would work.

These details are still private in terms of official documents, but Chelsea need to understand about the clause in order to get the green light to have a conversation with Michael Olise and his agents over the contract.

Manchester United and Newcastle are still there and both clubs are really interested in Michael Olise.

Duran could sign but Gallagher focused on Euros

Staying with Chelsea, conversations are also ongoing between them and Aston Villa, and the agents of Jhon Duran about the contract, the salary, the commission, so the entire package is being discussed but important clubs are preparing to enter the race.

For now Chelsea are still considered a favourite because they know the player wants to go to there, and it’s on them to agree personal terms and agents fee.

Conor Gallagher at the moment doesn’t want to decide anything now before the Euros. He wants to focus on the tournament, but Gallagher will be one to watch in the next few months.

Juventus eyeing Mason Greenwood

We keep repeating since February, March that the Mason Greenwood story is over at Manchester United.

They want to sell Mason Greenwood and my information is that it could be a loan with obligation to buy, so it could be that kind of formula – a potential loan move with buy obligation not option.

Let’s see what’s going to happen but there are many possibilities around Mason Greenwood, and Man United will take the time to pick the best proposal.

There is interest from Juventus but they have to sell at least one offensive player before they can land the player.

Matias Soulé is attracting concrete interest from West Ham and others but no formal bid yet, so Soulé could be one to watch in terms of exits.

Juventus want around €40m to let Soulé leave the club, so it won’t be an easy negotiation between clubs… but for sure there’s lot of interest around Europe, including at least 4-5 clubs from abroad. It’s an open race, but West Ham are keen.

It’s also important to say we have to follow the situation of Federico Chiesa because that is another interesting situation for this transfer window.

Dzenan Pejcinovic courting interest from several clubs

Man City are one of many clubs monitoring Wolfsburg’s Dzenan Pejcinovic for the future, but there are several clubs keeping a close eye on him.

Nothing close or advanced yet, but normal to monitor one of the potentially best talents in Europe.

At the moment that’s it, keeping a close eye and we will see which club will “attack” the situation.

As a football fan of any club, you have to admire the way that Brighton and Hove Albion continue to do things.

After all, it was only 13 years ago that the club were still playing their matches at Withdean Stadium, a venue built for athletics and only one stand that wasn’t temporary.

Under chairman, Tony Bloom, the Seagulls continue to take risks, but to now at least, that bravery has paid off.

Patience required with Hurzeler appointment

It therefore is completely in keeping with their business model that the club should choose St. Pauli’s 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler as the man to replace Roberto De Zerbi.

The decision might have raised a few eyebrows, but Fabrizio Romano is impressed.

“The appointment of Fabian Hurzeler is a brave one, absolutely,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

Brighton's appointment of Fabian Hurzeler is a brave one

“Of course there’s risk but it’s Brighton style, to go for talented and young people. I think it’s good idea to follow their plans, their style.

“Hurzeler did excellent at St Pauli so he has all the possibility and potential to shine also in Premier League. Patience will be needed, of course.”

It’s worth pointing out of course that Hurzeler, once appointed, will be seven years younger than his midfielder, James Milner.

On the face of it that could cause problems, however, if the American can garner similar success to that which he has managed at St. Pauli, there’ll be no issues.

Leading the club back to the Bundesliga deserves the plaudits, and given that he has all of the necessary coaching qualifications in place, the feeling is that it will be his strength of personality in the dressing room that will ultimately dictate how well the club do in the immediate future.

If he’s able to hit the ground running and get points on the board quickly, so much the better.

Although it’s yet to be officially announced, Brighton and Hove Albion’s appointment of 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler as their new first-team manager appears to be garnering the plaudits.

Currently still the manager of German outfit, St. Pauli, whom he led to promotion to the Bundesliga, the American would be seven years younger than the Seagulls experienced midfielder, James Milner, if his appointment is rubber stamped.

Given Brighton’s record in attracting left-field names into the dugout – Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi being the two most recent – it can’t be said that they won’t have done their homework.

Hurzeler might not be a household name outside of Germany as yet, but the same low key approach worked with both Potter and De Zerbi.

Brighton’s appointment of Hurzeler gets the thumbs up from Collymore

The club’s recruitment both on and off the pitch has been shown to be spot on, so one can assume that as and when Hurzeler is unveiled, he will hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Former English top-flight marksman, Stan Collymore, certainly believes it’s a good decision by the South Coast outfit.

“Graham Potter effectively took a Swedish club into European competition, whilst Roberto De Zerbi was in charge at Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk before heading to Brighton,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“I think what Brighton have is quite an incredible ecosystem whereby the structure is very good, their recruitment is very good and their style of play is nailed on. You know that Brighton are going to get the ball down and they’re going to be productive.

“Both of those seemingly left-field appointments worked, but the hire of Fabian Hurzeler, however, is a gamble.

Brighton are close to appointing Fabian Hurzeler

“Mitoma was a gamble at £2m, but you’d be looking at £50m-£60m to sign him this summer, injuries notwithstanding. That was risky, but we accept gambles and risks are part of the game where players are concerned, and weirdly not with managers.

“A lot will be made that he’s seven or eight years younger than James Milner, but players know who the manager is. Players know who the head coach is and with that kind of youth and enthusiasm comes a lot of training ground minutes, and a relaxing experience in the structure around him.

“I think it’s a really, really positive move. A massive appointment but for me it’s only the same risk and gamble as any player if it doesn’t work.

“If it does work, it will break the mould for clubs hanging on to 50 to 70 year olds like Roy Hodgson. Clubs will say why do we need that experience when we’ve got a 31 year old here whose still got 20 to 30 years left in management.

“He could break two glass ceilings in that there will be less reverse ageism in football in terms of management, and he can dictate that if you are American, you’re no longer seen as a Ted Lasso type who can’t be successful in English football. Good luck to him.”

Though age should be no barrier to success, it will be very interesting indeed to see how the more experienced members of the squad react to having someone so young on the bench, even when taking into account his relative success of the past couple of seasons.

If he’s able to get results from the get go and through the strength of his personality let everyone know who’s boss, it’ll be clear from the off that Hurzeler isn’t a man to be messed with, and Brighton might well have struck gold again.

As of this moment, it would appear that Brighton and Hove Albion are waiting to unveil Fabian Hurzeler as their new manager before getting down to business in the transfer market.

One player that the club have their eye on according to CaughtOffside sources is Gothenburg’s 18-year-old box-to-box midfield player, Malick Junior Yalcouye.

Brighton need to be quick for Malick Junior Yalcouye

Brighton directors have apparently been impressed by the 18-year-old Ivory Coast player’s abilities and could be ready to make their move shortly.

The Swedish club are believed to be entertaining offers of €8m-€10m euros for the player, with Belgian club, Gent, having already made a bid of €5m which was rejected out of hand by Gothenburg.

The Seagulls will need to have their wits about them if they’re set on landing a player that looks to be a rising star, as Premier League rivals, Man United and Brentford, have also registered an interest.

German giants, Bayern Munich, as well as PSV Eindhoven, Anderlecht, and Ajax are in the background ready to compete for the player’s signature, adding more elements to whether Brighton’s pursuit will be successful or not.

Transfermarkt only value the player at €700,000, with him having made 15 appearances in all competitions for his current side.

The sheer number of clubs interested looks to be what’s driving up the price, so there may well be room for negotiation when executives are sat around the negotiating table.

In his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, former Aston Villa attacker Stan Collymore discusses some of football’s biggest talking points, including why Luke Shaw is bang out of order, why Brighton deserve a pat on the back, why English authorities need to follow Spain’s lead and much more.

England’s poor form could mean a slow burn to glory… or glorious failure again

England manager Gareth Southgate

England’s poor performance against Iceland could be a perfect storm in terms of a tournament where the best teams always start slow and then move through the gears.

I watched Holland beat Iceland comfortably 3-0, they absolutely battered them by putting a lot of crosses in the box, but in terms of England at the moment, there are several players – John Stones and Kyle Walker to name just two – that obviously need minutes in their legs and aren’t going to get them until they go into games.

Jude Bellingham would have had a week or two off after the Champions League final to have a bit of party… Unfortunately, we don’t have six friendlies to play to give them and others the time they need.

I think that if we get to the semi-finals, for this group of players, that’s where they should be with a decent effort. Nine times out of 10 they should be semi finalists but if we have a good tournament, we should be looking to win it.

I don’t get involved in bookies odds and stuff quite simply because we’re in Britain and more people are going to vote for their own country than they are for others, but I do think there’s a very nice healthy dose of scepticism around the country which the Iceland result has only added to.

The weather is a bit flat still, we haven’t started the tournament yet… the expectation isn’t really there because people haven’t got used to the three games in a day which football fans love and which sets the tone.

I watched Portugal against Ireland and they look very, very good. I watched the Dutch, they look good. I watched the French, they look good. If we get to the semi-finals, we’ve got to be at our very, very best to win it.

At the moment, for me, it boils down to a few things. Several players are undercooked, one or two players are visibly ageing in front of our eyes, and we’ve had a mini experiment about who’s going to play number 10.

I fully expect by the end of the Denmark game on match day two, that we will be in a really good position to know whether this England team are struggling or whether we are slowly going through the gears on a march towards the latter stages and victory in the final.

Fair play to Brighton who’ve taken a risk with Fabian Hurzeler

Graham Potter effectively took a Swedish club into European competition, whilst Roberto De Zerbi was in charge at Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk before heading to Brighton.

I think what Brighton have is quite an incredible ecosystem whereby the structure is very good, their recruitment is very good and their style of play is nailed on. You know that Brighton are going to get the ball down and they’re going to be productive.

Both of those seemingly left-field appointments worked, but the hire of Fabian Hurzeler, however, is a gamble.

Luke Shaw is bang out of order

Luke Shaw

I’m a big fan of criticising managers because they ultimately make the decisions and it’s not unheard of, but I think that Luke Shaw criticising the medical stuff is bang out of order.

The reason why that is, is that the medical staff work their absolute nuts off for one aim; to try and get a player fit and healthy, and ready to play football.

I’ve never ever come across a medical person that says ‘you will play more often than not.’ They are a conduit between the player and the manager and they’ll say to the player, ‘look, you’re not ready for another couple of weeks yet, but the gaffer wants you back in a week. I’ll smooth it over and get it all sorted out.’

So I think that Luke Shaw’s making excuses if I’m being honest, and I hope that this isn’t going to blow up in England’s faces when he inevitably comes into the team on match day two.

Universally, medical staff in my opinion are not only a great buffer, but they would never ever, ever tell a player ‘you’ve got to be out there on Monday… You’ve got to train today…’

Those old school physios that came on with the magic sponges and gave you a kick up the backside… that’s changed now. I’ve known medical staff treating players with hamstring injuries, broken legs, calf problems, hernia operations, you name it, and despite them wanting to get back as quickly as they could, the medical team will have told them that the best time for them to come back is when their injury has healed completely and they’re ready to properly play football.

Ultimately, a player has a choice to be able to say ‘I’m not ready yet.’ The flip side of that is that there is the generation of players that won’t go on the training ground unless they are absolutely 100% fit.

I hope it’s not a warning sign for England. Luke Shaw saying he’s nearly there only for him to break down on match day two. It’s up to a player to say he isn’t ready and to talk to the physios and medical staff about getting him sorted.

Time could be up for Luis Diaz at Liverpool

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool

I think Luis Diaz is obviously a talented player but Liverpool are not particularly short in attacking positions. If you look at Salah, Gakpo, Jota, Nunez and Diaz… they can afford to lose one, and if the choice was mine, it would be Cody Gakpo.

There is the argument that he gives Liverpool flexibility and can play as a number nine, and there haven’t been lots of rumours about him going which would suggest that he’s staying put for a season or two.

Diaz is an odd one because of his injuries, the situation with his father’s kidnap which was obviously very traumatic during the season… at times he looks world class but at others he struggles to get a foothold in the game.

It really does depend on whether Barcelona are prepared to pay £50m-£60m for him, in which case I’ll drive him to Barcelona. If it wasn’t a derisory offer and they offered a player in return aswell, for the new manager it might simply depend on what kind of player that they’re offering.

In the pecking order of strikers at the club, you’re looking at Salah then Nunez, then Jota, then Diaz and finally Gakpo, so the Colombian is in the bottom two. Man for man, I don’t think you’ll find any Liverpool fan will put Diaz in between Salah and Nunez, for example in terms of importance to the club.

So I have no problem with him going because he’s been okay, but I don’t think he’s been stunning. At Liverpool, if you’re going to win titles, you’ve got to be stunning. You’ve got to hit your marks, you got to hit your stats.

If Barcelona come along with a good offer and it allows Arne Slot to have the kind of funds to be able to bring in a player that he likes in a position that he wants, it makes sense for me.

English authorities must follow Spanish football’s lead on racism

Vinicius Junior

On Twitter, I remember the Premier League asking everyone to put black squares on their bio to show solidarity with their campaign against racism. It means nothing. Well respected broadcasters and journalists not tweeting for 24 hours with a black square. Oh, great. That’s gonna stop a racist from from being a racist.

I remember getting emails from the Premier League saying ‘I see you’re very critical of our stance on racism,’ and then being bombarded with a pie chart with how much interaction they had. It doesn’t work until the deterrent stops people from doing it.

I know what it’s like to be racially abused on social media, in a football environment from football fans who then get punished. One of them was a trainee lawyer at the time, one was a 15-year-old boy that told his parents and broke down crying and one was a Derby fan.

They were all taken to court, one had to wear a tag, one was fined and the other had to pay something like £100 in victim surcharge, money that they may not have had at that time. So from my perspective, it’s really simple.

If you take the next step and even give racists just a week in jail, it will make a difference. Nobody wants to go to jail. Anybody, pretty much most people, can pay a £50 fine and then become the guy that abused [insert black player here].

So, absolutely fantastic from the Spanish authorities. The punishment for those who racially abused Vini Jr. is 10 times more important than what the English authorities would do about it, because we have a background of virtue signalling in this country.

You look back when England played in Seville many moons ago and there was blackface etc., and I think that Spain has had a problem with acknowledging it. So this is big. It’s saying, you go to a football match and you start doing this, you’re gonna get a proper punishment.

Eastern Europe, which has a problem in football traditionally with racially abusing players, need to do the same and if we do, we then have serious tools to be able to eradicate it from the grounds.

Well done the Spanish Federation, well done the Spanish judicial system. England – time to follow.

England star is a priority for Newcastle

Burnley’s James Trafford is a priority for Eddie Howe as the Newcastle manager looks to add to his goalkeeper position this summer. The Magpies also like Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili but both are considered too expensive. The 21-year-old would provide competition for Nick Pope, who missed a lot of the season through injury. I’ve no news on Liverpool and Chelsea being interested in Trafford despite the Premier League giants being linked to the Burnley goalkeeper.

Newcastle will now enter club-to-club talks with Burnley, so let’s see how it goes. Whatever fee they agree on for the England star, Man City will receive 20% of any future sale.

New contract at Man City could see key player leave the Premier League champions

Stefan Ortega has signed a new two-year deal with Man City until 2026 as the Premier League champions like the player and he trusts the project going forward. This move is also linked to the future of Ederson as I told you two weeks ago that City are open to the potential exit of the Brazilian goalkeeper. The player’s agent has been exploring options for weeks, so we have to wait and see.

Ederson is yet to decide his Man City future
Ederson is yet to decide his Man City future

However, this is not something guaranteed as it will depend on the proposals and the decision of the player. Man City have left it in the player’s hands, but if the Premier League champions receive a good proposal, they will not stand in the goalkeeper’s way. City consider Ortega a top goalkeeper and are happy to enter the 2024/25 campaign with the German as their number one.

This Ederson story is one to keep an eye on as there is strong interest from Saudi Arabia.

Erik ten Hag’s future at Man United is 50/50

This weekend is a very intense one behind the scenes at Man United, despite things being very quiet around the future of Erik ten Hag. However, many things are happening.

I’m told that Man United are still talking to the representatives of other managers as the future of Ten Hag is still not safe as of right now. The Manchester club are yet to make a decision on their Dutch coach and are taking their time to make sure they make the right move. There are many people involved in this, including the board and the new co-owners.

The situation is still 50/50 as we wait for Manchester United to make their final decision.

Luis Guilherme to undergo West Ham medical next week

Luis Guilherme’s move from Palmeiras to West Ham is verbally done, but before the transfer is Here We Go, we wait for the player’s medical to be completed and the contracts to be signed.

The medical tests will take place early next week between Tuesday and Wednesday with the winger travelling to England on Sunday with his agent. The 18-year-old will then sign a five-year contract at West Ham.

The Brazilian is a very talented winger and the work of technical director Tim Steidten has helped bring the player to West Ham as he travelled to Brazil to get the deal over the line. The transfer was not an easy one to complete but the Premier League club made it happen.

The signing of Guilherme will cost West Ham a guaranteed €23m with €7m add-ons, with the Brazilian club receiving 20% from the 18-year-old’s next move.

Update on Man United’s centre-back search

Internal talks are currently ongoing over bringing a new centre-back to Man United, however, nothing will be done before they make their final decision on the future of Erik ten Hag, which should arrive soon.

Once the manager situation at Old Trafford is clarified, there will likely be a more concrete update about Man United’s search for a new central defender. I can say that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Juventus’ Gleison Bremer are all on the Premier League club’s list of targets. However, many options are being assessed for the role of new centre-back at Man United.

Brighton close to appointing 31-year-old coach

31-year-old Fabian Hürzeler is set to become the new manager of Brighton after helping St. Pauli get promoted to the Bundesliga this season. We are waiting for the clubs to reach an agreement on the compensation fee, but this is considered only a matter of time as negotiations are going very well.

Hürzeler already has an agreement in place with Brighton regarding his contract, his salary and the project at the Premier League club, so the deal is done. Once the compensation fee is agreed, the St. Pauli coach will be confirmed as the new manager of Brighton and the youngest in England’s top flight.

In other news…

Caoimhin Kelleher – There has been no update yet on the future of Caoimhin Kelleher at Liverpool, with everything very quiet at present. Liverpool consider him an important player, and they are very happy with him. The only way that changes is if the goalkeeper decides that he wants to leave this summer, but it’s still all quiet there.

Alphonso Davies – There has been no change in Alphonso Davies’ situation despite reports stating that he is leaning towards signing a new deal with Bayern Munich. The player has a new contract proposal from Bayern and Real Madrid are waiting to see what he does. We just have to wait and see what the full-back decides. If Davies wants to leave, Real Madrid will make their move, but the La Liga champions will only proceed with favourable conditions.

Crysencio Summerville – Liverpool and Chelsea have both been scouting Crysencio Summerville for months, but then in terms of negotiations, nothing has started yet. Talk of the Reds no longer being interested in the winger can’t be true as it is still early for this transfer. The appreciation from both clubs is still there, so we have to see if they decide to approach Leeds for Summerville at some point during the transfer window.
