Former Everton Chief Executive Keith Wyness believes West Ham are likely to be well within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules despite their significant summer spending.

It’s been a busy summer at the London Stadium and the Hammers have heavily backed new manager Julen Lopetegui in the market with a number of new signings.

West Ham have splashed out on the likes of Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Guilherme and Niclas Fullkrug as they look to qualify for Europe next season.

West Ham to be within profit and sustainability rules

The Hammers spent £40m on Kilman and £25m for Summerville which makes them their two most expensive signings of the summer as per Transfermarkt.

Teams have to be wary of their spending due to profit and sustainability rules and both Nottingham Forest and Everton have fallen foul of the rules and were issued with a points deduction last season, but both cubs managed to stay in the Premier League.

Wyness was asked for this thoughts on West Ham’s spending and whether they would potentially fall foul of the rules because of it.

Julen Lopetegui as West Ham manager.
West Ham have heavily back Lopetegui in the window.

“In terms of the economics, I think they’re doing ok,” he told Football Insider.

“I think they’ll be fine in terms of the PSR limit. They’re stretching it, but they’ll be ok.

“It’s now down to Lopetegui to get off to a good start in this new era for him.”

The East Londoners haven’t finished spending and are expected to complete the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Manchester United next week for a reported £15m.

It’s a big season for West Ham and they are building a squad with plenty of quality for Lopetegui, but the big task for the former Wolves and Real Madrid manager is to get everyone on the same wave length which is far easier said than done.

The Hammers take on Aston Villa in their first game of the season on August 17th and will be looking to get off to a winning start.

Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are discussing the possibility of Joao Felix being part of the Conor Gallagher deal according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues have agreed a deal to sell Gallagher to Atletico for around £34m and the England international is currently in Madrid.

It’s been reported that the announcement of Gallagher’s move had been delayed to allow Chelsea to finalise Samu Omorodion’s move to the club, but that has now subsequently fallen through after issues with finalising his contract.

Chelsea and Atletico in discussions over Felix

It’s believed that Atletico need an outgoing in order to finance a move for Julian Alvarez and Romano has reported that they are in discussions with Chelsea over Felix being part of the Gallagher deal.

He took to X.com and said:

“EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea and Atlético Madrid are now discussing João Félix to #CFC as part of Gallagher deal!

“Samu Omorodion deal collapsing and the two clubs don’t want Gallagher and Julián Álvarez deals to collapse too, João Félix, being discussed with Jorge Mendes in London.”

Felix spent the second half of the 2022/2023 campaign on loan at Chelsea and made 20 appearances for the club, scoring four goals and Ben Jacobs has reported Atletico could let the attacker leave for around €50m.

Mauricio Pochettino decided last summer that he didn’t want to keep Felix and the Portugal international spent last season on loan at Barcelona.

New Chelsea signing Pedro Neto shares the same agent as Felix and it almost appears more than a coincidence that he’s now discussing a possible return to Stamford Bridge for the 24-year-old.

The Blues are also looking at the possibility of signing Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and have held discussions over the possibility of the Nigerian being used as part of the deal that would see Romelu Lukaku head to Naples to reunite with Antonio Conte.

Lukaku has reportedly agreed a three year deal with the Italian side, whilst Chelsea are trying to sign Osimhen on loan with Napoli believed to prefer a permanent transfer.

Samu Omorodion’s move to Chelsea has fallen through after a major problem finalising the contract according to David Ornstein.

Chelsea had agreed a £34.5m fee with Atletico Madrid for the striker and the 20-year-old was expected to complete his move before the start of the season.

Omorodion, who was expected to sign a seven year contract with the Blues was part of the Spain squad which won Olympic gold after they beat hosts France in the 5-3.

Omorodion’s move to Chelsea has fallen through

The Blues have been in the market for a striker and despite signing teenager Marc Guiu from Barcelona they have been looking to add another goalscorer to their ranks, with Omorodion their chosen man.

Everything appeared to be agreed between clubs and player, but Ornstein has reported the deal is off after there was a major problem finalising the contract.

He took to X.com and said:

“Samu Omorodion transfer from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea has collapsed. Deal agreed club-to-club & between 20yo #Atletico striker + #CFC.

“But major problem finalising contract means deal off; Spain youth int’l not moving to Stamford Bridge @TheAthleticFC.”

This news certainly represents a blow to Chelsea who have tracked the striker for the majority of the summer and clearly believe in his ability.

Omorodion joined Atletico last summer from Granada but spent the season on loan at Alaves where he scored nine goals in 36 appearances.

He’s yet to kick a ball for Atletico, but is regarded as one of the most promising young strikers in Europe, although he’s still vey raw and needs a lot of refining.

Chelsea could now turn their turn their full attention to Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, with the Blues in talks with their Italian counterparts over the possibility of the Nigerian being part of the deal which would see Romelu Lukaku head to Naples.

Enzo Maresca admitted he’s “very excited” by the signing of Pedro Neto following Chelsea’s final pre-season game against Inter Milan on Sunday.

The Blues concluded their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against the Italian champions at Stamford Bridge thanks to Lesley Ugochukwu’s last minute equaliser.

It was Maresca’s first game in charge at his new home and represented his final chance to see his team in action before they kick off the new campaign against Manchester City on August 18th.

Maresca excited by Neto

The Blues have been busy in the transfer market and the Chelsea faithful got the chance to see their latest signing as Pedro Neto was paraded on the pitch at half time.

Chelsea agreed a deal with Wolves on Friday worth £51.4m for the Portugal international which seeming appeared out of nowhere, and he’s signed a long term contract with the club.

Neto is a proven quantity in the Premier League and will add depth and quality to the wide areas, with the fact he can play on both wings seen as a huge plus by Chelsea.

Neto joined Chelsea for £51.4m.

Following the game Maresca admitted he was very excited by the signing of the 24-year-old and said he can offer many things.

“Im very excited, he can offer many things. He can play on the right side, he can play on the left side, he’s very good one-on-one,” he told Chelsea’s website.

“It is one more option we have because there will be many, many games in the season, so we need a big squad.”

Neto, who has had a number of injury issues over the past few seasons was limited to 20 Premier League appearances last season in which he provided nine assists and scored two goals and Chelsea will be hoping he can stay fit.

The Portuguese will train with his new team-mates this coming week and could make his debut for the club against City.

Mikel Arteta has given an update on the fitness of Jurrien Timber after the defender missed Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Sunday.

Set-piece goals from centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães got the job done for the Gunners in their final match before opening their 2024/25 Premier League campaign at home to Wolves on Saturday.

However, eyebrows were raised when fans noticed Timber was once again left out of the matchday squad.

Timber has endured a tough time at Arsenal since arriving from Ajax for £38m (per Sky Sports) last summer, playing just five competitive matches as a cruciate ligament tear derailed his 2023/24 campaign.

The 23-year-old has clocked up 125 minutes during pre-season in games against Bournemouth and Man Utd, but has now missed the Gunners’ last three matches.

Naturally, Arteta was asked about Timber’s absence after the win over Lyon on Sunday.

“It’s fine. He’s been doing some individual work, that’s clear now,” Arteta said (via the Arsenal official website). “So we expect him to be ready to train with the group in the next week, because he has no reaction. So quite positive.”

Takehiro Tomiyasu is another Arsenal defender on the treatment table, failing to appear at all for the Gunners in pre-season due to a knee injury.

Unfortunately, the outlook for the Japan international is not as positive as that of Timber.

“Yeah, I think it will take weeks on that one, unfortunately,” said Arteta. “He’s going to have to be patient and work through it because I think it’s going to take a few weeks.”

Leeds United kicked off their Championship campaign with a chaotic 3-3 draw against Portsmouth but Daniel Farke wasn’t happy with one of his players.

Having missed out on promotion last year in heartbreaking fashion at Wembley, Leeds will be hoping it’s second time lucky this season.

It’s not been the easiest of summers and the club have lost key players in Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville, whilst Wilfried Gnonto has also attracted interest from the Premier League and Leeds will be desperate not to lose anymore of their key players.

Farke not impressed with Piroe’s performance

It could have been a lot worse for Leeds and they required a 95th equaliser from Brenden Aaronson to rescue a point and ensure they didn’t get off to a losing start.

Despite losing Summerville and Gray, Leeds do still have plenty of quality in their side, but Farke was left unimpressed by the performance of Piroe who came on as a second half substitute.

Joel Piroe in action for Leeds.
Piroe is starting his second season with Leeds.

The former Swansea man is a proven goalscorer at Championship level and Farke felt the striker tried to do too much when he came on.

“Our game was not great after the changes. Over-motivated maybe to show in this 25 minutes every player wanted to show their worth. Mistakes across the whole squad,” he told Leeds Live.

“Quite normal at 2-2 after 75 and you have missed chances, perhaps some lads get tired. Natural feeling you get that nervous. Brenden had mistakes. Joel trying to prove his worth too much. Difficult to say.”

Piroe joined Leeds last summer from Swansea and scored 13 goals in 45 Championship appearances having scored 19 the season before for the Swans.

Leeds will certainly be looking to Piroe for a better return this season as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Napoli are going to try and reach an agreement next week for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues have been busy in the transfer market with a number of new faces coming through the door, the latest being Pedro Neto who was presented on the pitch at half time of Sunday’s game against Inter Milan.

However, Chelsea have a number of players they need to move on before the end of the window and progress on outgoings has been slow.

Napoli will try to reach Lukaku agreement next week

Chelsea have sold Ian Maatsen and Omari Hutchinson, whilst Conor Gallagher is on the verge of joining Atletico Madrid, but that’s just scratching the surface of who needs to be moved on.

There’s currently a group of players including Lukaku, Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah training away from the first team whilst they sort their futures out.

In regards to Lukaku, Chelsea will be desperate to move him on once and for all this summer following his disastrous return to the club in 2021.

Romelu Lukaku in action for Roma.
Lukaku wants to join Napoli but they have yet to reach an agreement with Chelsea.

The Belgian has a £38m exit clause in his contract and has spent the last two seasons on loan at Inter and Roma, but now has set his sights on a move to Napoli and a reunion with Antonio Conte.

Lukaku has reportedly agreed a three deal with Napoli, but as of yet there’s no agreement with Chelsea and the deal is made more complicated by the fact Napoli need to offload Victor Osimihen to make room for the Belgium international.

However, Romano has provided an update on the situation and has reported that Napoli are going to try and reach an agreement for Lukaku next week.

“Napoli next week are prepared to get in touch with Chelsea again to try to reach an agreement and bring Romelu Lukaku to Antonio Conte,” he said on his YouTube channel.

Chelsea expect the exit clause to be paid in full but the longer the saga drags on they may accept slightly less if it means they can get his wages off the books once and for all.

Galatasaray forward Wilfried Zaha is seeking an immediate return to the Premier League this summer, according to reports.

The Ivory Coast international is a Crystal Palace icon, notching 90 goals and 62 assists in 458 appearances across all competitions between 2010 and 2023, either side of an unsuccessful spell with Man Utd between 2013 and 2015.

Zaha left Selhurst Park at the end of his contract last summer to join Turkish giants Galatasaray, who he helped win the Super Lig title with nine goals and three assists in 30 appearances — a record extending to 10 goals and five assists in 43 games across all competitions.

However, reports (via Newcastle World) now state that Zaha is ‘desperate’ for a return to the Premier League this summer and would be allowed to leave Galatasaray on loan.

Former club Crystal Palace are understood to have expressed an interest in Zaha, while Leicester City are also potential suitors of the 31-year-old — who has also won the Turkish Super Cup during his time in Istanbul.

Wilfried Zaha of Galatasaray looks on during the UEFA Champions League match between Galatasaray A.S. and FC Bayern München at Ali Sami Yen Arena on October 24, 2023 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Could Newcastle revive Zaha interest?

Newcastle United were reportedly interested in Zaha last summer prior to his move to Turkey, but ultimately declined to pursue the winger any further.

However, the Magpies are undoubtedly short of options on the flanks right now. Anthony Gordon is their star wideman but has been heavily linked with a move to boyhood club Liverpool in recent weeks.

Beyond Gordon, Harvey Barnes and the out-of-favour Ryan Fraser the only senior wingers on the books at St. James’ Park.

With that in mind, would it be the biggest surprise to see Newcastle make a move for Zaha, whose availability on loan would certainly appeal to Eddie Howe’s PSR-limited budget?

Wayne Rooney’s start to life as Plymouth Argyle manager couldn’t have got off to a worse start.

Following mixed spells in charge of Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, the Manchester United record goalscorer was appointed Plymouth boss in May.

The Pilgrims had a mixed pre-season under Rooney, beating Cheltenham 5-1 either side of a 2-2 draw with Orlando Pirates and a 2-1 loss to Bristol Rovers. However, optimism was still high that the 120-time England international could help further establish them as a Championship side.

But Rooney’s first competitive match in charge of Argyle ended in disaster with Sheffield Wednesday inflicting a 4-0 defeat.

Jamal Lowe opened the scoring in the 35th minute before a 52nd-minute own goal from Brendan Galloway left Plymouth with a mountain to climb. Late strikes from Josh Windass and Michael Smith finished the job at Hillsborough on Sunday.

The defeat understandably left Plymouth fans concerned about the campaign ahead, with some even predicting a swift exit for Rooney.

Rooney ‘angry’ at Plymouth performance

Wayne Rooney, manager of Plymouth watches the action from the touchline during the pre-season friendly match between Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle at The Memorial Stadium on July 30, 2024 in Bristol, England.

Rooney himself was left both furious and confused by his side’s performance and he didn’t mince his words when reflecting on the match.

“I’m disappointed, angry, surprised,” Rooney told BBC Radio Devon. “I think from everything we’ve seen from the players throughout pre-season today was a surprise to me.

“We knew it was important to try and get through the first 20 minutes and then try and get some composure and some calmness to the game, and we didn’t manage to do that.

“I think the basics of the game today was not good enough and for me that’s not acceptable.

“Whether that’s getting to the ball, tackling, being aggressive and staying with runners — we knew Sheffield Wednesday were one of the best teams in the league last season at crosses and cutbacks and it was four goals from crosses and cutbacks, which we worked a lot on throughout the week, so I’m really disappointed.”

Bundesliga side VFB Stuttgart are in talks to sign Chelsea striker Armando Broja on loan according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Chelsea have been busy in the transfer market this summer with several new faces coming through the door, and the club confirmed the signing of Pedro Neto at half time in Sunday’s game against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge.

While the Blues may still make one or two more additions the main focus before the window shuts is outgoings with Chelsea needing to move on several players.

Broja in talks with Stuttgart

Chelsea have a number of players training away from the first team as they look to sort out moves away, with Broja part of that group.

Progress on the striker’s departure has been slow and although he’s been linked with the likes of Everton, Wolves and AC Milan nothing has materialised yet.

However, Plettenberg has provided an update on the Albanian’s future and it seems he could be edging closer to joining German outfit Stuttgart.

He took to X.com and said:

“VfB Stuttgart in formal talks to sign Armando #Broja on loan  22 y/o Chelsea striker has been on the list for weeks. As recently revealed in our Transfer Update show, Stuttgart is planning to sign another striker on loan if possible.

“#VfB exploring more loan candidates but Broja is a concrete option as the player is open to join Stuttgart now. Nothing advanced yet. Early stage. #CFC @SkySportDE.”

Broja struggled to make an impression under Mauricio Pochettino over the first half of last season and the Blues tried to sell him in January, but there were no takers at their reported £50m asking price.

The Albania international instead joined Fulham on loan which turned out to be a disaster as he played just 80 minutes of football.

Stuttgart finished a surprise second in the Bundesliga last season but have lost a number of their key players this summer, however it would represent a good move for Broja and would provide him with Champions League football.
