Aston Villa are reportedly looking to offload Diego Carlos due to his high wages amid links with a possible transfer to Fulham.

The Brazilian defender has had a mixed spell at Villa Park, and though he has his qualities it perhaps makes sense to offload him and try something different.

Carlos is one of Villa’s top earners, and it might be that they can no longer justify spending that much on the player.

That’s according to pundit Dan Bardell, who spoke to Villa News about the Carlos transfer situation and the club’s plans to deal with his departure.

“I have got time for Carlos. He suffered a really bad injury when he joined the club and he’s done well to come back from that,” Bardell said.

“I think with the wages that he is on and because he doesn’t start in Villa’s best team when everyone is fit, I think he’s expendable.

“If they can get a bit of money and get his wages off the books then they’ll probably try to do that. The club could see it as an opportunity that is too good to turn down.”

Fulham are in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa defensive mainstay Diego Carlos this summer.

Fulham will be eager to improve on the 13th-place finish from last season. They will be keen on finishing inside the top half of the table and Marco Silva is trying to ensure he has all the pieces needed to get the job done. The Cottagers have already made some significant additions to their ranks but they are still looking to add more quality at the back.

According to a report from Sky via Fichajes, Fulham are looking to raid Aston Villa for the services of Diego Carlos. The Cottagers want to further strengthen their backline and they feel the former Sevilla star could help their cause. He has done a decent job for Villa at the back and won’t take long to adjust to life at Craven Cottage.

Diego Carlos would be a quality addition

Carlos made a name for himself at Sevilla before joining Unai Emery’s Villa in the summer of 2022. He had a horror debut campaign because of a serious injury but the Brazilian defender did manage to bounce back with impressive performances last season as he was involved in 38 outings. While he hasn’t been as consistent as he was during his time in Spain and still has two years left on his deal, Fulham are looking to prise him away from their rival English club.

They are already in advanced talks to sign the 31-year-old centre-back. While the Cottagers have already added Jorge Cuenca to their squad, they need a more experienced campaigner to help them deal with the absence of Tosin Adarabioyo who left the club upon expiry of his contract. Carlos has been linked with a return to Spain but it looks like he could be switching clubs within the Premier League.

Diego Carlos is reportedly considering his options ahead of the start of the new 2024-25 season.

Making 20 Premier League starts last season, the Brazilian, who joined Aston Villa in 2022, has been a mainstay in Unai Emery’s first team.

However, recent transfer rumours have linked the 31-year-old with a surprise exit.

Reportedly a summer target for Marco Silva’s Fulham, Carlos has also recently been linked with a return to former club Sevilla.

However, although reports in Spain have suggested Sevilla are not interested in resigning the South American, they do say the player is now ‘feeling uncomfortable’ at Villa Park — hinting at a possible departure.

During his first two years in the Midlands, Carlos, who has three years left on his contract, has directly contributed to two goals in 41 games in all competitions.

Aston Villa have reportedly discussed the possibility of selling one of their first-team players.

That’s according to Sky Sports News reporter Lyall Thomas, who claims the Villains are open to offloading centre-back Diego Carlos and have held recent transfer talks with Fulham.

Carlos, 31, who, according to Spotrac earns £100,000-per week, is thought to be considering his options ahead of next season.

Aston Villa transfer news: Fulham make first move to sign Diego Carlos

Marco Silva’s Cottagers will likely face competition for the 31-year-old’s signature but being the first side to make direct contact could put them in a strong position when it comes to convincing the player to make the switch.

Diego Carlos could leave Aston Villa this summer.

Carlos left Sevilla to join Villa two years ago, and although he suffered an injury-struck opening campaign, started in just 20 Premier League games last season with Unai Emery clearly preferring Paul Torres and Ezri Konsa’s partnership.

Should Fulham be successful in their pursuit, Villa’s number three would become Silva’s third signing of the summer after Emile Smith Rowe and Ryan Sessegnon.

The South American centre-back has two years left on his contract and is valued at £14 million (TM).

Aston Villa have held talks with Fulham regarding the sale of defender Diego Carlos this summer, according to reports.

Fulham are still on the hunt for a replacement centre-back after Tosin Adarabioyo left to join Chelsea on a free transfer this summer.

And Sky Sports are reporting that the Whites have turned their attention to Villa’s Carlos as one of two possible arrivals in the position, alongside Villarreal’s Jorge Cuenca.

Carlos arrived at Villa Park from Sevilla in August 2022 for a reported £26m fee (per Sky Sports) but has endured a tough time in the Midlands, with an Achilles injury limiting him to just three appearances in his first season at the club.

In 2023/24, Carlos played 38 times across all competitions, but made just 20 starts in the Premier League as he faced competition from the likes of Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa for a place in Unai Emery’s starting line-up.

With Tyrone Mings also closing in on a return from a long-term injury, Aston Villa have are well-stocked for starting centre-backs, meaning they will likely be open to allowing Carlos to leave this summer.

Alongside the Brazilian, Aston Villa look set to part ways with striker Jhon Duran this summer, with the likes of Chelsea and West Ham United linked with the Colombia international in recent weeks.

Aston Villa are willing to cash in on Diego Carlos this summer.

The 31-year-old central defender has been an important player for Aston Villa, but the West Midlands outfit are currently under financial pressure and they will need to sanction the departure of multiple players in order to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

According to Football Insider, they are willing to listen to offers for Carlos and it will be interesting to see if they can find a suitable destination for him. Douglas Luiz and Jhon Duran are also expected to leave the club in the coming weeks.

Aston Villa have secured Champions League qualification and they will be hoping to do well in the European competition next season. They will need a quality squad with more depth in order to do well in the Champions League. Losing players like Carlos would weaken them severely.

The Brazilian defender has a contract with the club until 2026 and his departure will leave Aston Villa vulnerable at the back. It will be interesting to see if they can bring in adequate replacements for the player.

Aston Villa cannot afford to lose their best players

Unai Emery will want to put together a formidable squad at the West Midlands club and push for domestic trophies with them. They cannot afford to sell their best players if they are serious about pushing for domestic trophies. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.

Carlos joined Aston Villa for a fee of around £26 million in 2022, and he has been an important player for them. There is no doubt that he is good enough to play for the big clubs and there should be no shortage of interest in him if he is made available. It remains to be seen where he ends up eventually.

It could be quite a difficult summer for Aston Villa manager, Unai Emery, despite the Villains having qualified for the Champions League for the first time since it was branded as the European Cup in the 1980s.

That’s because, according to CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of the current situation at the club, up to four of Villa’s first-team stars could be sold.

Ollie Watkins can celebrate his call-up to the England squad for the upcoming European Championship by making a move to either Arsenal or Chelsea, as both London giants want to land the 28-year-old in the summer window.

Aston Villa on the back foot already this summer

The Blues are also believed to be chasing 20-year-old Colombian striker Jhon Duran, and were both players to be sold, it would leave Emery light up front ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Brazilian defender, Diego Carlos, 31, would appear to be surplus to requirements.

AC Milan look to be interested in taking the centre-back to Serie A, whilst Juventus seem to be close to getting a deal for Douglas Luiz over the line.

Juventus want Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz
Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz to AC Milan or Juventus?

Newcastle and Arsenal are also credited with an interest in the midfielder, but it’s Juve’s apparent willingness to offer €20m and both Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior that could see that particular deal sealed.

For a team and club that really appear to be going places, losing some of their best players, however much their sales might bring in, would seem to be counter-productive at this point.

It would also put Villa on the back foot from the beginning of the new season.

With that Champions League campaign to come, it’s clear that Unai Emery is going to need those players fit and available – or, at the very least, new players with an equivalent skill set and experience.

Aston Villa are gearing up for a pivotal summer transfer window, with manager Unai Emery eyeing crucial additions to the squad.

Among the top targets is Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso, who could join Villa on a free transfer at the end of the season. However, to facilitate this move, the Villans might have to part ways with current defender Diego Carlos.

Due to the profit and sustainability rules governing Premier League clubs, Aston Villa may need to offload players before making significant new signings this summer. Reports suggest that Diego Carlos is one of the players the club is ready to listen to offers for, to balance the books and make room for Hermoso, via The Telegraph.

Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has weighed in on the situation, acknowledging the club’s need to sell before they can buy. Hutton, impressed by Carlos’ performances this season, notes that despite the Brazilian’s strong showings post-injury, financial and tactical necessities might force Villa’s hand.

Alan Hutton on current Villa defender Diego Carlos

Hutton remarked, “This is a guy who has played more than 20 times this season. He could probably get better, I know he’s had a serious injury and that takes some time to come back from, but I’d give him a little bit of leeway there. If they are looking to sell him on, will they get the same money for him? Probably not, but they’ll have to bring somebody in.”

He added to Villa News, “I’ve heard the rumours that are kind of ramping up around Carlos at this moment in time, they’ve got a number of options at centre-back so you’d think if Hermoso was to come in, somebody would have to leave.”

Aston Villa to sell Diego Carlos in order to acquire free agent Mario Hermoso

Aston Villa want to bring in Champions League calibre defender Mario Hermoso

Marco Hermoso, who is set to become a free agent, is a highly sought-after defender, and his potential addition to Villa’s squad aligns with Emery’s ambitions to bolster the team. Hermoso’s experience and defensive prowess would be valuable assets as Villa prepares for both domestic and European competitions.

According to reports, Hermoso has already been offered a contract by Aston Villa, indicating strong interest from both parties, via Sport Mediaset.

Securing a top-four finish in the Premier League has opened the door for Villa to compete in the Champions League next season. To ensure they are not only competitive but also formidable in both the Premier League and Europe, Emery must make strategic acquisitions and perhaps difficult decisions regarding current squad members.

Diego Carlos, despite his contributions, might be one of the sacrifices needed to bring in fresh talent with Champions League experience like Hermoso.

After a stunning campaign under Unai Emery, Aston Villa deservedly qualified for next season’s Champions League.

Last Minute Europa League Final Tickets – ONLY £125!

The Spaniard has completely turned around the club since Steven Gerrard was manager, and whilst entry into the top European competition may have come slightly too soon for the Midlands-based outfit, that’s unlikely to be the focus from the manager.

As Newcastle found out last season, the joy at entering the Champions League was quickly tempered by the injuries that the club received as a result of the extra games that were played and the associated work involved for the players to be in peak condition.

Aston Villa may need to cash in on Diego Carlos

Villa have a decent squad available but unless there’s going to be a significant change in terms of incoming personnel at Villa Park, they too could struggle through the group stages.

That would appear to not be the case as The Telegraph (subscription required) are reporting that, in fact, the club could be willing to cash in on 31-year-old Diego Carlos.

Diego Carlos could be sold by Aston Villa
Diego Carlos in action for Aston Villa.

It’s believed to be the centre-back’s £100,000 per week wages that could be the problem as Financial Fair Play continues to bite clubs hard.

In Villa’s case, even the potential windfall from gaining entry into the Champions League might not be enough to stop Carlos from leaving.

The one saving grace that the club have even if the centre-back has to be sold is that Villa’s president of football operations, Monchi, still knows how to work a transfer market.

Right back since his Sevilla days, the 55-year-old has not only been known for maximising value of current players, but also how to spot a bargain and turn them into a jewel.

Villa fans can be assured that if the club are willing to sell any of their players, it will only be because Monchi and Emery will have identified a suitable replacement and likely at a fraction of the cost.

Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos is reportedly eyeing a move away from the club this summer with Italian giants AC Milan said to be interested.

Villa are having a brilliant season under Unai Emery and are within touching distance of securing a top four finish and Champions League football.

Emery’s men are currently seven points clear of Tottenham in fourth, having played a game more and have three games remaining, starting with Sunday’s trip to Brighton.

Diego Carlos to leave Aston Villa?

There have been a number of standout performers this season at Villa Park with most of the plaudits going to Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz and Leon Bailey, but Carlos has been a key part of the success this campaign.

The 31-year-old arrived at the club from Spanish side Seville in 2022 and has had injuries problems during his time in The Midlands, most notably a ruptured achilles tendon not long after he arrived.

Carlos is reportedly eyeing a move away from Villa Park this summer.

When he’s been fit and available Carlos has played, and he’s made 41 appearances in all competitions, with 24 coming in the Premier League.

Villa could win the Uefa Conference League as well this season, although they will need to overturn a 4-2 deficit to Greek side Olympiakos in the second leg.

Despite the success, Carlos is believed to be considering his future at Villa Park and is reportedly eyeing a move away.

TEAMtalk claim AC Milan are interested in signing the defender, and he is believed to be one of their main targets as they look to sign a new centre back.

It’s claimed Carlos is evaluating the possible move to Milan, which would be a huge blow for Villa as they prepare to potentially embark on a Champions League campaign next season.

Villa do face the prospect of interest from big clubs for their star players in the summer, with striker Ollie Watkins linked with a move to Arsenal, and they will be desperate to keep hold of as many as possible.
