Aston Villa are reportedly looking to offload Diego Carlos due to his high wages amid links with a possible transfer to Fulham.

The Brazilian defender has had a mixed spell at Villa Park, and though he has his qualities it perhaps makes sense to offload him and try something different.

Carlos is one of Villa’s top earners, and it might be that they can no longer justify spending that much on the player.

That’s according to pundit Dan Bardell, who spoke to Villa News about the Carlos transfer situation and the club’s plans to deal with his departure.

“I have got time for Carlos. He suffered a really bad injury when he joined the club and he’s done well to come back from that,” Bardell said.

“I think with the wages that he is on and because he doesn’t start in Villa’s best team when everyone is fit, I think he’s expendable.

“If they can get a bit of money and get his wages off the books then they’ll probably try to do that. The club could see it as an opportunity that is too good to turn down.”

Tottenham attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso has reportedly been given the green light to complete a potential transfer to Aston Villa.

The Argentine was left out of the most recent Spurs squad, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that this is a clear signal that he’s set to leave the north London club.

Lo Celso is firmly on Villa’s radar this summer, though Real Betis are also keen, so it could be that we’re about to see an intriguing battle for his signature.

Lo Celso to Villa looks like one to watch as Unai Emery’s side continue their busy summer, though Joao Felix is another high-profile star they’re tracking at the moment.

Villa may face competition for Felix’s signature after he spent last season on loan at Barcelona, who had seemingly not ruled out bringing him back, even if that hasn’t materialised yet.

The Portugal international has also spent time on loan at Chelsea, but will likely be a lot more expensive than someone like Lo Celso.

Aston Villa have made Joao Felix one of their top transfer targets for this summer, with Unai Emery determined to add the Portuguese forward to his options.

Villa may find this a difficult deal to get done, however, with Atletico Madrid likely to ask for huge money to sell the former Chelsea and Barcelona loanee, with Villa planning an offer worth around €60m to test their resolve, CaughtOffside understands.

Emery could make Felix a star player in his Villa side, though the 24-year-old surely has no long-term future at Atletico, where he’s largely seen as having failed to live up to his potential.

Felix also struggled to make much of an impact in loan spells at Chelsea and Barca, so it remains to be seen if Villa would really be well advised to keep pursuing him so strongly.

Joao Felix to Aston Villa?

Still, that is currently understood to be their plan, with the feeling being that Atletico may need to be flexible with their demands if they are realistically going to sell and finally get this unwanted player off their books.

Felix transfer may not be all Villa have planned

While Felix is one of Villa’s priorities, it seems the Midlands outfit also have one eye on Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso as a possible addition to come in as a squad player, sources have informed CaughtOffside.

The Argentine, who is also being tracked by Real Betis, is expected to be available for a cut-price fee of around €16m, and it remains to be seen if AVFC will step up their pursuit of him.

Lo Celso has struggled to impress at Spurs, so it makes sense that he’s now available on the market.

If Villa could land Felix as a starter and Lo Celso as squad depth, that could be truly superb business by the club as they look to build on last season’s success of finishing in the top four.

The future of Giovani Lo Celso at Tottenham is still to be decided before the transfer window shuts and it is being reported that Aston Villa remain interested in the Argentina star.

The 28-year-old was left out of Spurs’ squad for their pre-season clash with Bayern Munich on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which suggests that the North London club are working on the midfielder’s exit.

Tottenham are hoping to sell Lo Celso as the player’s contract expires in 2025, which makes this summer the ideal time to part ways.

There is not an abundance of concrete interest in the Argentina international, however, Real Betis and Aston Villa are still keen as other clubs are monitoring the situation, reports Fabrizio Romano.

Lo Celso joined Spurs permanently from Betis back in 2020 and a move back to Spain could benefit his career, while the midfielder played some of his best football at Villarreal under Unai Emery, who is now in charge at Villa.

It remains to be seen if one of the two clubs make a move for the 28-year-old before the window shuts, but they could get a good deal given Spurs’ eagerness to sell.

Will Tottenham's Giovani Lo Celso move to Aston Villa?
Will Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso move to Aston Villa?

Giovani Lo Celso’s time at Tottenham has been a failure

Lo Celso joined Tottenham on a permanent deal in 2020 as part of a €60m switch from Real Betis and it is a deal that has never worked out for the Premier League club or the player.

The Argentina star never cemented his place in the Spurs starting 11 under several managers the London club has seen come and go. Ange Postecoglu gave the 28-year-old a chance last season but it seems that the player has not done enough to convince the Australian coach.

A move is best for everyone during this current transfer window as Lo Celso deserves to be at a club that can get the most out of his talents.

Aston Villa are targeting two more signings in the transfer window according to reports as they prepare for Champions League football next season.

It’s been a busy summer at Villa Park with seven new faces coming through the door, whilst two key players from last season have departed.

The likes of Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen have joined the club, whilst Douglas Luiz left for Juventus as part of a swap deal and club record signing Moussa Diaby was sold to Saudi side Al-Ittihad.

Villa target two more signings

Unai Emery is building an exciting squad at Villa packed with plenty of young talent and experience and despite the money they have spent it appears the club might not be done in the window.

The Birmingham Mail have reported that Villa are targeting two more signings in Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix and Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

Villa are looking at Felix as a potential replacement for Diaby with the report adding that although no progress has been made on a deal Atletico are aware of Villa’s interest.

Joao Felix spent last season on loan at Barcelona.
Felix’s future at Atletico Madrid is uncertain.

Felix has struggled to make progress following his big money move to Atletico from Benfica and has spent time on loan at Chelsea in the 2022/2023 season, whilst he spent the last campaign on loan at Barcelona.

Emery will back himself to get the best out of the Portugal international and at just 24 there’s still plenty of time for Felix to reach his huge potential, although a deal could likely be very expensive.

Geertruida has emerged as a target to replace Diego Carlos who looks set to leave with Fulham expressing strong interest in the defender.

The 24-year-old played an important role for Feyenoord under now Liverpool manager Arne Slot and can play at both right back and centre back.

If Villa were able to get both these deals over the line before the end of the window they would put themselves in a brilliant position to have another strong season.

Aston Villa are considering making a move for Joe Gomez amidst uncertainty around Diego Carlos’ future.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have been quite busy in the ongoing transfer window as they look to prepare for the 2024/25 season where they will feature in the Champions League. While they have already made seven signings, Villa could push for another one before the end of the transfer window.

According to Matt Law via RousingTheKop, Emery’s team are considering making a move for the services of Joe Gomez as they plan for life without Diego Carlos. The Brazilian international joined Villa back in the summer of 2022. While he was considered an exceptional signing, injuries haven’t helped his cause and he has fallen down the pecking order at the English club.

Despite having two years left on his deal at the club, Carlos has been linked with a move away. Fulham are the ones pushing hard for his signature and in case the move goes through, Villa have already identified Joe Gomez as a potential replacement. The 27-year-old was on the verge of joining Newcastle back in June. While the move collapsed, Emery’s team could provide him a way out of Liverpool.

Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool

The English centre-back joined the Reds back in 2015 and he was an important part of their first team during Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club. While he still has two years left on his deal, Gomez seems keen on leaving and is reportedly frustrated with the current set-up at the club.

The English international could be a great acquisition for Villa as Emery prefers having players who can play in a number of positions. Gomez is capable enough to feature anywhere at the back as well as a defensive midfielder. While he is one of their targets to replace Carlos, they have other alternatives who could be cheaper option than the Liverpool star.

Aston Villa and West Ham United have been offered the chance to sign former Atletico Madrid star Mario Hermoso.

The Spanish centre-back is on the lookout for a new club after having parted ways with Atletico Madrid following the expiry of his contract. While he was linked with a move to Napoli, things didn’t go according to plan. He has since changed agents and according to a report from AreaNapoli, Mario Hermoso’s new representatives have offered his services to Premier League duo Aston Villa and West Ham United.

The former Real Madrid academy product ended his five-year-long stint with Atletico at the end of June after his contract ran out. The 29-year-old free agent has been on the lookout for a new club since but hasn’t had any luck so far. He was hoping to join Napoli following his former representative’s discussions with them. The large compensation fee of his agents along with Hermoso’s €4-5 million wage demands were beyond the Italian club’s capabilities.

He has since changed representatives and they have offered him to Aston Villa and West Ham United. Unai Emery has watched Hermoso up close in action during his time in Spain and with Diego Carlos’ future uncertain he could be an ideal replacement.

Mario Hermoso in action for Atletico Madrid

West Ham need defensive reinforcements

Meanwhile, the Hammers have already added Max Kilman to their squad. They have been working hard to bring in someone who can feature alongside the ex-Wolves skipper in the heart of the defence. With a deal for Jean-Clair Todibo within touching distance, they do not really have room for Hermoso unless one of their defenders ends up leaving the club in the coming weeks.

While the 29-year-old has been offered to the English clubs, a move to the Premier League looks highly unlikely as his representatives have returned to Italy to offer him to Serie A clubs with Inter and AC Milan in the thick of things.

Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign England under-17 international Mason Cotcher from Sunderland according to Fabrizio Romano.

It’s been a busy summer at Villa Park with a number of new signings coming through the door as the club look to strengthen their squad ahead of Champions League football next season.

The likes of Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen, Ross Barkey and Jaden Philogene have all come in whilst club record signing Moussa Diaby has departed for Saudi side Al-Ittihad.

Aston Villa close in on Mason Cotcher signing

It’s not all about the first team at Villa and they are also looking to strengthen their academy and make signings for the future.

Romano has reported that they have agreed a deal with Sunderland for 17-year-old striker Cotcher who will sign a contract at Villa Park until 2027.

He took to X.com and said:

“Understand Aston Villa have now agreed on deal to sign England U17 striker Mason Cotcher from Sunderland. Contract until June 2027 to be signed today at #AVFC.”

Sunderland will be compensated when Cotcher signs his first professional contract because of their role in his development.

Cotcher, who has two caps for England’s under-17s made six appearances in the under-18 Premier League last season, scoring three goals, whilst he also made one appearance in the Premier League 2.

In total the 17-year-old has made 27 appearances for Sunderland under-18s, scoring nine goals, and he’s also featured in the youth teams at Manchester United, Arsenal and Leeds.

Villa lost Omari Kellyman from their academy earlier this summer with the 18-year-old joining Chelsea in a deal worth £19m.

It remains to be seen if Unai Emery’s side will do any further business in the window, and they one final pre-season game against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday before they kick of their campaign away at West Ham on August 17th.

Former Aston Villa player Alan Hutton believes that one of Lucas Digne or Alex Moreno has to leave the club in the summer transfer window.

Both the players are expected to get less playing time in the upcoming season as Unai Emery has added a number of new players to his squad.

The West Midlands club will play in the Champions League next season and that has made Emery target new signings.

Digne has been linked with a move to Galatasaray but nothing has been finalised yet.

In the left-back position, Villa are blessed with several options and Hutton believes it is time for one of them to leave the club.

Since Ian Maatsen will now be the club’s first choice left-back, there is no point in Villa having three left-backs at the club.

Hutton told Villa News:

“Either or at this moment of time.

“I know Galatasaray have been interested and he kind of fought back against it and said that he wouldn’t be leaving.

“If there aren’t any suitors at this moment in time, it is probably best for someone, either Moreno or him to go out on loan because you don’t need three left-backs.

“I understand that last year, even though I sometimes find it a bit strange, Unai Emery rotated the fullbacks quite often even in-game and he must have been looking for something different, but I don’t think you need three.

“They’ve paid a lot of money for Maatsen to come in and I think he probably will be the starter with someone else, probably Moreno, backing him up.

“So one has to leave, we’ll see how it pans out but whether it’s a loan or permanent it needs to happen for one of them.”

Hutton is making sense with his assessment as Emery’s team does not need three players in the same position.

One of Digne or Moreno will not be getting enough playing time and there is no point in having options on the bench that will not be used.

There are three more weeks to go of the current transfer window, and that means there’s plenty of time for deals to still be done in the Premier League or elsewhere.

Ideally, transfers should be completed as quickly as practicable after a window opens in order for clubs and players to know exactly where they stand, and for all parties to move forward.

The reality is that there are almost always a number of hoops to jump through to get a deal done and that takes time.

Whether it’s agents demanding a bigger slice of the pie, a player wanting guaranteed match time, or a selling club wanting to ensure there’s a sell-on clause, a variety of separate issues can cause a delay.

Transfer windows remain “anxiety inducing” for players

Delays that can be a real problem for players waiting to move.

“Every transfer window is anxiety inducing for a player,” former English top-flight professional, Stan Collymore, told CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“Lots of dead ends… this club are interested in you, then they’re not, then they’ve dropped out of the race altogether and somebody else has come in.

“How it normally works is players basically have a meeting with the managers who are interested in them to talk about the football side, and then the agent sees what they’re prepared to do or not prepared to do, and there’s a hell of a lot of waiting involved.

“There isn’t enough done for players to be able to guide them through the process beyond just being a player.

“In all honesty, even with clubs nowadays, I speak to a lot of younger players and of course they’ve got agents around them and the clubs try their very best with liaison officers to help players settle in – perhaps a little bit more at a club than they used to – but it’s still not enough.

“That’s because there are a lot more countries to move to, players are being bombarded with all sorts of figures and money talks.

“Are they going to a club to be the best footballing version of themselves that they can be, because that should ultimately will guide everything, or are they going to the club that are going to offer them a few more zeros on their pay packet?

“They must do their due diligence.”

Younger players would clearly do well to take on board Collymore’s advice.

As a ex-player that’s been through it himself, the former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool legend speaks from a position of knowledge and authority.

Just because there’s unbelievable amounts of money involved – which could well sway a young man’s desire to move clubs – the process needs to be taken slowly, with accountability on clubs and agents at every step of the way.

The duty of care that doesn’t appear to be there, as Collymore highlights, and that surely has to be delivered as a formal part of the process.

That way, there’s likely to be less stress on the player and deals can be executed more smoothly as a result.
