Chelsea have been dealt a potentially damaging transfer blow after Brighton and Hove Albion have reportedly begun talks with Celtic over the signing of Matt O’Riley.

After reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid worth £33 million for England international Conor Gallagher, Chelsea were almost immediately linked with signing O’Riley as the midfielder’s direct replacement (Sky Sports).

Brighton open talks to sign Celtic’s Matt O’Riley

However, according to a recent report from Sky Sports News reporter Lyall Thomas, Enzo Maresca could be beaten to the 23-year-old after Brighton took the initiative and started discussions with Celtic over a potential summer transfer.

“Brighton are in talks with Celtic over a deal for Matt O’Riley,” the outlet posted on their live transfer blog.

“They are among a number of clubs keen to sign the midfielder this summer.”

While Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid has yet to be officially confirmed, with the 24-year-old heading to Spain for a medical, fans are anticipating an announcement sooner rather than later.

As for O’Riley, clearly admired by a host of top clubs, Celtic will fear they’re going into the SPL’s game week two without the help of their number 33.

Scoring 19 goals and registering 18 assists in 49 games in all competitions last season, O’Riley’s contributions will take a lot of replacing.

The Danish midfielder, who was born in London in 2000, has three years left on his contract with the Hoops.

The future of Matt O’Riley at Celtic remains up in the air ahead of the new Premier League season as several English clubs have an interest in the midfielder.

The Denmark international has been with the Scottish Champions since 2022 and is coming off the back of a very impressive 2023/24 campaign, in which he produced 19 goals and 18 assists across 49 games.

O’Riley has a contract at Celtic Park until 2027 but his performances last season have attracted the interest of several clubs in the Premier League.

Sources have told CaughtOffside that West Ham United and Leicester City have shown strong interest in the midfielder; however, both English sides are hesitant about meeting Celtic’s £25m asking price.

Despite this, both teams are prepared to make a move for the 23-year-old and are ready to enter negotiations to try and come to an agreement to sign the player ahead of the new Premier League season getting underway next week.

In addition to West Ham and Leicester, Serie A side Atalanta have made multiple attempts to sign O’Riley, with their latest proposal around the €18m mark. Although Celtic rejected this offer, the Italian club are ready to make another attempt to sign the midfielder.

Could Celtic’s Matt O’Riley replace Conor Gallagher at Chelsea?

Conor Gallagher looks set to leave Chelsea this summer and complete a move to Atletico Madrid as part of a €40m deal.

The Blues could look to replace the English midfielder in their squad before the transfer window shuts and sources have said that O’Riley is being viewed as a potential replacement.

Celtic will continue to demand £25m to part ways with the 23-year-old this summer as it remains to be seen if any of the interested clubs submit an official proposal over the coming weeks.

Chelsea are keen on Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley as they assess potential replacements for Conor Gallagher according to Sky Sports.

The Blues have agreed a fee worth around £34 with Atletico Madrid for the England international, who is expected to give his final answer on Monday.

Gallagher’s future has been a topic of conversation for the last 18 months and it’s been reported that he rejected three offers of a new contract from Chelsea.

O’Riley a potential Gallagher replacement

Chelsea have only offered Gallagher a two year deal with the option of a further 12 months as they have doubts over his suitability for Enzo Maresca’s system.

The new deal would see a pay rise for Gallagher, but he’s believed to want a longer term deal like many of his team-mates have signed.

If Gallagher decides to join Atletico Madrid it remains unclear if Chelsea would go into the market for a replacement given the options they have in the middle of the park.

Matt O'Riley celebrates scoring for Celtic.
O’Riley is attracting interest from a host of clubs this summer.

However, Sky Sports have reported that Celtic midfielder O’Riley is one of several options the Blues are keen on.

O’Riley impressed for Celtic in their 4-1 win over Chelsea in pre-season, and he’s attracted interest from Serie A side Atalanta as well as newly promoted Southampton.

The 23-year-old scored 19 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions for Celtic last season and is under contract with the Scottish Champions until 2027.

It doesn’t make a huge amount of sense for Chelsea to replace Gallagher if he departs given they have already signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and they also have talented youngster Andrey Santos on their books.

Not to mention the club also have Carney Chukwuemeka in the squad so the need for another midfielder seems unnecessary, but Chelsea have done a lot of things in the market that don’t make sense.

If a move for O’Riley were to materialise it would be hard to view it in any other way than just stockpiling talent.

Leicester City are plotting a bid to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic to replace outgoing midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, according to reports.

The Foxes recently said goodbye to Dewsbury-Hall, with the midfielder reuniting with manager Enzo Maresca at Chelsea after the pair helped win promotion from the Championship with Leicester last season.

With 12 goals and 14 assists to his name in 44 Championship appearances, Dewsbury-Hall was named Leicester’s Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year last season and will leave a big hole in the midfield of new boss Steve Cooper.

What’s more, with Wilfred Ndidi’s contract expiring at the end of June, there’s something of a midfield crisis developing at the King Power Stadium.

O’Riley to replace Dewsbury-Hall for Leicester?

Matt O’ Riley (l) of Celtic celebrates the winning Celtic goal with team mate Anthony Ralston during the Cinch Scottish Premiership match between Celtic FC v St Mirren at Celtic Park Stadium on May 18, 2024 in Glasgow, Scotland.

According to The Sun, Leicester have locked their sights on Celtic midfielder O’Riley as their ideal replacement for Dewsbury-Hall.

The report states that the former England youth international — who now represents Denmark at senior level — is available for £50m this summer.

That is a handsome sum for a player whose only top-flight experience has come in Scotland. However, the 23-year-old’s numbers speak for themselves, with O’Riley notching 19 goals and 18 assists in 49 appearances across all competition last season to help the Hoops win a Premiership and Scottish Cup double.

According to The Sun, the £50m price tag has already put fellow Premier League side Brighton off a pursuit of O’Riley, meaning Leicester would have a clear run at his signature at present.

Leicester City have joined the race to sign Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley this summer, as they seek a replacement for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who moved to Chelsea earlier in the transfer window.

The report from GiveMeSport claims that Leicester scouts have identified O’Riley as a player who would replace the goal contributions of Dewsbury-Hall. However, the Scottish giants are seeking a fee of over £50m for the Dane.

England vs Netherlands tickets still available!

However, securing his signature won’t be easy. The 22-year-old Dane has been valued at over £50 million by Celtic, which poses a financial challenge for Leicester, specially with the need to adhere to the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

The report adds, that even if they are willing to spend big on him, they face a lot of competition from within the Premier League and abroad. Southampton, Brighton as well as Atletico Madrid, are all keen on signing him.

Matt O’Riley to Leicester City?

Matt O’Riley’s impressive record at Celtic

O’Riley has been a standout performer for Celtic. Last season, he made 49 appearances, scoring 19 goals and providing 18 assists across all competitions. Since joining Celtic from MK Dons, he has amassed 27 goals and 34 assists in 121 appearances, establishing himself as a key player for the Scottish giants. (Transfermarkt)

Leicester City’s interest in Matt O’Riley shows their intent to strengthen their squad following their return to the Premier League.

However, with a hefty price tag and strong competition, the Foxes will need to navigate financial constraints and competitive bids to secure the talented midfielder

West Ham United have been busy in the transfer window this summer as they have already secured the signing of two players.

They have managed to sign Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras and free agent Wes Foderingham.

They are not going to stop any time soon as they are targeting more signings, with Wolves defender Max Kilman likely to be the next.

Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui wants to get reunited with his former centre-back Kilman and the talented defender could join his old manager at the London Stadium.

There is another player catching the attention of West Ham United and that is Celtic player Matt O’Riley.

HITC have reported that five Premier League teams have expressed interest in signing O’Riley from Celtic, including West Ham.

West Ham United Premier League Matt O'Riley

In order to release him, Celtic demand a club record sale of £30 million, which exceeds the £25 million they received in exchange for Jota.

Under Brendan Rodgers, O’Riley had one of the best seasons in Scottish Premiership history, netting 18 goals and dishing out 13 assists from central midfield.

West Ham need a new midfielder due to Paqueta uncertainty

The midfielder participated in 49 games and helped to set up 37 goals in the previous campaign.

O’Riley started his career with Fulham, but he only made five appearances in the first team squad there.

The club have expressed interest in signing him but Hammers are also in contention to win the race for his signature.

Leeds United are reportedly monitoring Celtic star Matt O’Riley ahead of the summer transfer window and could make an official move should they secure promotion to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s men will take on Southampton in the Championship Play-Off final on Sunday at Wembley and should they get promoted, the Yorkshire club will need to strengthen their squad.

Matt O’Riley has emerged as a target for Leeds ahead of the 2024/25 season but the 23-year-old is also wanted by Newcastle and Leicester City, reports The Chronicle.

The Tyneside club have had scouts watch the Danish star and are in the strongest position to sign the midfielder given their current status in the Premier League. This summer is a big one for Eddie Howe’s team and should they sign O’Riley, he will likely be one of several players to arrive at St James’ Park.

As for Leeds, the Celtic star would be a great addition to their squad but they need to get promoted first if they are to have a chance to sign the 23-year-old.

Matt O’Riley has been in top form for Celtic this season

It is not hard to see why clubs are interested in O’Riley as the 23-year-old is having a great season at Celtic. Ahead of the Scottish Cup final on Saturday, the Denmark international has featured in 48 games for the Hoops during the 2024/25 campaign, scoring 19 goals and assisting a further 18.

The clash with Rangers at Hampden Park may be the midfielder’s last with Celtic as it remains to be seen who makes an official move for the player this summer.

Leeds United are reportedly considering a summer move for Matt O’Riley, the highly-regarded Celtic midfielder who has caught the attention of several European clubs, including Newcastle United.

This interest comes on the back of an impressive season for O’Riley, who has been pivotal in Celtic’s campaign and could crown it with a Scottish Cup victory this weekend.

Since joining Celtic from MK Dons in 2022, O’Riley has flourished in the Scottish Premiership. His performances have not only solidified his reputation but have also drawn significant interest from clubs across Europe. This season, his dynamic midfield play has been instrumental in Celtic’s successes, and his contributions have not gone unnoticed by top-tier clubs.

During the winter transfer window, Atletico Madrid made an attempt to sign O’Riley, but Celtic resisted, retaining their star midfielder. Despite this setback, Atletico’s interest has not waned, with the club reportedly still keen on securing his services. Other clubs, including LaLiga leaders Girona and Serie A’s Inter Milan, have also been linked with O’Riley, indicating the broad appeal of his talents.

Newcastle United have been actively scouting O’Riley, viewing him as a potential addition to their squad for the upcoming season. The Magpies, who have ambitions of strengthening their midfield, see O’Riley as a valuable asset who could enhance their Premier League campaign.

Leeds United have also thrown their hat into the ring. According to the Chronicle, Leeds have “looked at” O’Riley as a possible signing. With the potential return to the Premier League, Leeds are prepared to support their manager Daniel Farke in bolstering the squad. This backing could include significant financial investment, necessary to meet Celtic’s likely high asking price for O’Riley.

The Danish midfielder is under contract with Celtic until 2027, having extended his deal last October. This long-term commitment means Celtic hold a strong negotiating position and can demand a substantial transfer fee.

Tottenham are interested in bringing Celtic’s Matt O’Riley to north London this summer according to reports.

Spurs started the season strongly going unbeaten in their first ten Premier League games but their form has tailed off as the campaign has gone, and it appears they will have to settle for Europa League football next season.

Ange Postecoglou has made it clear he wants reinforcements to his squad in the transfer window, but it remains to be seen to what extent Daniel Levy will back the Australian.

Spurs interested in Celtic star

Postecoglou is likely to be looking for reinforcements in the midfield and attacking areas this summer given Spurs are set to move players on in those positions.

According to GIVEMESPORT Spurs are interested in Celtic midfielder O’Riley who has impressed by amassing 33 goal contributions this season.

O’Riley is attracting interest from the Premier League.

In fact it was actually Postecoglou who signed the 23-year-old for Celtic in January 2022, with the Denmark international going on to make 72 appearances under the 58-year-old.

GIVEMESPORT adds O’Riley won’t look to force a move, but would be willing to listen to any serious offers were they to come in.

Spurs are set to face competition from West Ham for the Dane, who hopes to make the Denmark squad for Euro 2024, and the fact he would count towards the home grown quota having been born in Hounslow appeals to both clubs.

Understandably Celtic are desperate to keep hold of O’Riley and the report adds they won’t entertain a sale for anything less than £25m.

The midfielder has three years left on his current contract, meaning Celtic are in a strong negotiating position and won’t need to accept an offer below their valuation.

If O’Riley were to reunite with Postecoglou he would be competing with the likes of James Maddison for a place in the Spurs line-up.

Leeds United have been pushing hard towards automatic promotion back to the Premier League since the turn of the year and should they get there, two new signings could be on the way.

The Whites are currently top of the English second division, one point ahead of Leicester with a game over the Foxes. Ipswich Town are only one point behind that pair and the end of the campaign is set up to be very exciting.

Leeds will be hoping to secure promotion as early as possible as it will help planning for next season easier.

The Yorkshire club already have two deals they want to complete as Farke looks to strengthen his defence and midfield.

The Championship club will look to complete the permanent signing of Joe Rodon from Tottenham over the summer as the Wales star has been very impressive this season at Elland Road. The Premier League club have set an asking price of around £12m to £15m and it remains to be seen if Leeds will pay that.

When it comes to the midfield, Farke has his sights set on Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley, who has been enjoying an excellent campaign north of the border. The Denmark international has an impressive 11 goals and 13 assists from midfield this season; form which has earned the former MK Dons player a hefty £25m price tag.

These two players would be great additions to Leeds’ squad and more will follow if they are playing in the Premier League next season.
