Mikel Arteta has given an update on the fitness of Jurrien Timber after the defender missed Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Sunday.

Set-piece goals from centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães got the job done for the Gunners in their final match before opening their 2024/25 Premier League campaign at home to Wolves on Saturday.

However, eyebrows were raised when fans noticed Timber was once again left out of the matchday squad.

Timber has endured a tough time at Arsenal since arriving from Ajax for £38m (per Sky Sports) last summer, playing just five competitive matches as a cruciate ligament tear derailed his 2023/24 campaign.

The 23-year-old has clocked up 125 minutes during pre-season in games against Bournemouth and Man Utd, but has now missed the Gunners’ last three matches.

Naturally, Arteta was asked about Timber’s absence after the win over Lyon on Sunday.

“It’s fine. He’s been doing some individual work, that’s clear now,” Arteta said (via the Arsenal official website). “So we expect him to be ready to train with the group in the next week, because he has no reaction. So quite positive.”

Jurrien Timber pictured during Arsenal’s Premier League match with Nottingham Forest on August 12, 2023.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is another Arsenal defender on the treatment table, failing to appear at all for the Gunners in pre-season due to a knee injury.

Unfortunately, the outlook for the Japan international is not as positive as that of Timber.

“Yeah, I think it will take weeks on that one, unfortunately,” said Arteta. “He’s going to have to be patient and work through it because I think it’s going to take a few weeks.”

Arsenal could include two players as part of a deal to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli this summer according to reports.

The Gunners again came up short in the Premier League title race as they finished two points behind Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta will be be under pressure to bring the title to the Emirates next season, and will need to strengthen his squad in the summer to give Arsenal the best chance possible.

Arsenal could offer two players as part of Osimhen deal

Arsenal are said to be in the market for a striker, as they look for an out and out goalscorer, with Gabriel Jesus not living up to expectations following his move from City, and Eddie Nketiah seemingly not good enough.

Arteta’s side have been strongly linked with a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and are also said to have an interest in Osimhen.

Antonio Conte has agreed to become Napoli’s next manager and he is planning for life without the Nigeria international who has a release clause of around £113m.

Osimhen is set to leave Napoli this summer, although suitors are put off by his £113m release clause.

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport report that Arsenal aren’t prepared to meet the 25-year-old’s release clause and could offer two players in part exchange in an attempt to bring the fee down.

The report adds the players who could be involved are attacking midfielder Emile Smith Rowe and defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who are said to be of interest to Conte.

Osimhen scored 15 goals in Serie A last season as Napoli put up a dreadful defence of their title, finishing tenth.

The Nigerian is expected to leave Naples this summer and has interest from the Saudi Pro League, whilst Paris Saint Germain are said to have expressed an interest.

Chelsea, who have been long time admirers of Osimhen aren’t currently pursuing a move, reportedly due to the cost of the deal, and concerns about his injury record.

Osimhen is certainly a talented striker, but it’s a huge fee to pay for a player who has only scored more than 20 league goals once in his career.

Arsenal duo Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu are reportedly wanted by Napoli as part of any potential transfer deal involving Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

The Gunners are one of the clubs being linked with Osimhen at the moment, along with Chelsea and Saudi Pro League sides, and it could be that there’ll be some attempt to get his price tag down by offering players in exchange.

Smith Rowe is looking likely to be out of the first-team picture at Arsenal, and he’s also on Fulham’s radar this summer as it looks like there’s a chance of the north London giants cashing in on the England international.

Now fresh reports claim Tomiyasu is another player whose future could be in doubt, with Napoli eyeing up both if they are to let Osimhen move to the Emirates Stadium.

Osimhen transfer: Will Arsenal give up two players to help get this deal done?

Victor Osimhen to Arsenal in a swap deal?

Osimhen would undoubtedly be an exciting signing for Arsenal, who need a new striker next season, but will they really be willing to let two first-teamers leave?

Smith Rowe might not be particularly high up in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order at the moment, but he could be an important squad player next season for what could likely be a long and gruelling campaign.

Tomiyasu, meanwhile, only recently signed a new contract with Arsenal, having been a key player for Arteta’s men in recent times.

The Japan international previously played in Serie A with Bologna and has been linked with a return to Italy with Inter Milan in the past, though it didn’t materialise, so it remains to be seen how strong the Napoli links are.

Arsenal might also opt to go for someone like Benjamin Sesko over Osimhen, as he’s younger and has a more affordable asking price due to a release clause at RB Leipzig.

Everton shocked the Emirates as they took an unexpected lead against Arsenal before the Gunners equalised just before the break.

With the Premier League title on the line, many expected them to play a bit part role in the Gunner’s quest for their first title in two decades but they threw a spanner in the works.

An Idrissa Gueye free kick took a massive deflection off Declan Rice, leaving David Raya flat-footed as it flew into the far corner.

But it took the home side only three minutes to level things up with Takehiro Tomiyasu firing a Martin Odegaard cross past Jordan Pickford.

Arsenal have been hit with another injury blow as Takehiro Tomiyasu missed his sides clash against Wolves on Saturday evening.

Arsenal travelled to the Molineux Stadium on Saturday evening to try and chase down Manchester City after their disastrous past week.

The Gunners were dethroned from the top of the Premier League table after their shock 2-0 loss against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium with City putting five past Luton the previous day.

That defeat was then quickly followed by their exit from the Champions League after losing to Bayern Munich in Germany, putting even more pressure on Mikel Arteta’s men to bounce back on the weekend.

But they will have to do it without Japanese international Tomiyasu, with the versatile defender picking up a knock during their Champions League clash midweek.

The 25-year-old has struggled with his fitness all season, an unfortunate pattern which has plagued his career in North London.

Luckily, the Gunners have plenty of cover in the left-back position with Jakub Kiwior named in the starting line-up.

Arsenal fans are still hoping to catch a glimpse of summer signing Jurrien Timber who tore his ACL at the beginning of the season although Arteta made it clear that it’s still too soon.

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a new left-back this summer and are yet to open talks with Oleksandr Zinchenko over a new contract, suggesting he may no longer be a part of Mikel Arteta’s long-term plans.

Zinchenko looked an exciting addition to the Gunners’ squad when he joined from Manchester City last season, and his presence seemed key in helping the north London giants become Premier League title contenders again.

Still, it now seems the Ukraine international’s future may be in doubt as The Athletic report that Arteta wants a new signing at left-back, despite the presence of the former City defender and others like Jakub Kiwior, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber who can play there, as well as loaned-out Kieran Tierney and Nuno Tavares.

Arsenal fans will probably increasingly feel that this is the right decision, as Zinchenko has mostly been a lot poorer this season, with the team perhaps now shifting towards a style of play that doesn’t suit him as much.

Zinchenko transfer: Who could replace the Arsenal left-back?

Oleksandr Zinchenko in Arsenal training

Still, there’s also no doubt about the unique qualities that Zinchenko can offer on the ball, and it’s not immediately obvious if there are a lot of good options out there for Arsenal to consider.

The 27-year-old would probably have a lot of suitors from elsewhere, having shone for so much of his time at Man City, even if things haven’t quite gone to plan for him in his time at the Emirates Stadium.

It seems a tad risky, however, for AFC to let him go unless they’re confident they can sign a left-back who will be good enough to come in and become first-choice, as it seems unlikely that squad players like Kiwior and Tomiyasu will make that step up, while Timber is probably better suited to playing right-back or centre-back.

Tierney and Tavares, meanwhile, struggled before going out on loan and it’s hard to imagine Arteta bringing them back into the first-team fold.

Man City and Arsenal will go head-to-head in a huge match at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday and the Gunners have several injury worries heading into the clash.

The result of the match could have big ramifications on the Premier League title race and a win for Mikel Arteta’s team would not only keep them on top of the table, but it would be a huge statement within a very close title race.

The North London club were 1-0 winners in the reverse fixture at the Emirates back in October but it was this match last season that destroyed the Gunners’ title hope as Pep Guardiola’s men hammered them 4-1.

Heading into Sunday’s match, Arteta has several injury concerns and Arsenal journalist Charles Watts has provided an update on key players ahead of this weekend’s crucial game.

Arsenal will make “late call” on Bukayo Saka for Man City clash

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Watts has provided an update on the fitness of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

“I do expect Bukayo Saka to be fit. From the conversations I’ve had, I do not get the impression that his withdrawal from the England squad is much to be concerned about,” the Gunners journalist said.

“The issue was described to me as a ‘slight muscle injury’, but it’s not thought to be serious. Arsenal will make a late call on Saka, but the hope right now is that he will make the trip to Manchester.”

Watts continued by saying: “Martinelli’s foot injury is far more of a concern. He was on crutches the night of the Porto game and so he is a real doubt. You would think Leandro Trossard would start if Martinelli misses out, although Gabriel Jesus is an option on the left, especially as I expect Kai Havertz to keep his place as the central striker.

“Elsewhere, Takehiro Tomiyasu should be involved in the squad, but Gabriel Magalhaes is in a similar position to Martinelli.

“It will be touch and go, but Arsenal hope he will shake off the injury that saw him withdraw from the Brazil squad. Jurrien Timber has been in full training for a while now, but the fact he didn’t get any minutes in the QPR friendly makes me think it is still early for him to be in contention for the game at the Etihad.”

Arsenal are reportedly planning to play against Queens Park Rangers in a behind-closed-doors friendly during the international break, but it seems Jurrien Timber is not yet fit enough to be involved.

This will come as a big disappointment to many Gunners fans, as it has seemed for a while now like Timber could be closing in on a long-awaited comeback from the extremely serious injury he picked up on his Premier League debut earlier this season.

Having joined Arsenal from Ajax in the summer, the Dutch defender has barely been able to feature for the club due to this injury, and football.london now say he’s not going to be involved in the friendly against QPR.

Buy England v Brazil Tickets

On a more positive note for Arsenal, Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu are set to feature in this game, in what could be a useful run-out for them after injury problems of their own this season.

Jurrien Timber hasn’t played for Arsenal since August

Partey, much like Timber, has barely played for AFC this term, while Tomiyasu has also had a lengthy spell out which came after a really good run in the team earlier in the campaign.

Timber injury: Arsenal fans made to wait for defender’s return

It had previously been reported that Timber should be ready to play for Arsenal again after the international break, as per football.london earlier this week.

Perhaps the 22-year-old will have the chance to get on the pitch soon, but it looks like this friendly against QPR at the Arsenal training ground will come a bit too soon for him.

Arsenal supporters will no doubt be desperate to see Timber make an impact towards the end of the season, however, as he looks an outstanding young talent who can give Mikel Arteta options at centre-back, right-back and left-back.

That kind of versatility will surely be useful as Arteta will likely have to rotate with the big matches coming thick and fast in the coming weeks.

Arsenal full-back Takehiro Tomiyasu has officially signed a new contract with the Gunners, with club director Edu discussing how happy he is to have got the Japan international to commit his future to the north London giants.

Tomiyasu has been an important part of the Arsenal first-team in recent times, with his versatility making him a really useful player for Arteta, even if he’s not necessarily someone who looks like he’s always going to be an automatic starter at the Emirates Stadium.

Still, the 25-year-old has just kept on improving since joining Arsenal from Bologna back in 2021, and fans will be delighted by today’s news that he’s decided to sign a new deal with the club.

Tomiyasu contract is another welcome boost for Arsenal

AFC chief Edu certainly seems happy to have held on to Tomiyasu as he sung the player’s praises on Arsenal.com today.

Takehiro Tomiyasu of Arsenal

Edu said: “We are very excited to have Tomi with us for more years to come. He has huge qualities both on and off the pitch, and offers so much strength and versatility to our squad. Tomi is a top professional and it’s great that he’ll continue to play an important role in the coming years, as we work towards achieving our goals.”

Mikel Arteta was also full of praise for Tomiyasu, saying: “We are so pleased to have Tomi commit his future with us. Together with his natural ability and strength, Tomi’s attitude, mentality and values are first-class. Tomi is loved by everyone and has been an integral part of the squad since joining us.

“The way he trains, with his desire and determination to be the best version of himself every day is admirable. We look forward to continue working with Tomi in the future years.”

The Tomiyasu news also follows Ben White signing a new contract with Arsenal last week, in another welcome boost for the club after also tying down other star names like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and William Saliba earlier in the season.

Arsenal journalist Charles Watts does not believe it’s likely that Mikel Arteta would be ready to sell Oleksandr Zinchenko this summer, but he did concede that every player has their price.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column, Watts also explained that Arsenal have been hoping to find a buyer for Kieran Tierney, with the Gunners trying to offload the Scotland international last summer before struggling to get offers for a permanent deal, so sending him on loan to Real Sociedad instead.

Still, Watts has made it clear that Arteta remains a big fan of Zinchenko, so he’s not convinced by the transfer rumours about the former Manchester City left-back possibly leaving the Emirates Stadium at the end of this season.

Arsenal only signed Zinchenko last season, and the Ukraine international made a fine start to life in north London, even if his second season hasn’t been quite as good, with a loss of fitness and form affecting his influence on the side.

Arsenal transfer update: Zinchenko not for sale but Tierney could leave

Discussing the situation with Arsenal’s left-backs, Watts suggested Zinchenko would likely continue to be first choice for that role despite Jakub Kiwior’s fine form during his absence, while other versatile defenders like Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu would most likely play on the right-hand side more often than the left.

He said: “I’ve seen the suggestions about Arsenal being open to Oleksandr Zinchenko leaving in the summer, but I would be very surprised if that was the case.

“Mikel Arteta loves Zinchenko and what he brings to the side. Yes, he is not always the best defensively at times, but what he gives going forward outweighs those deficiencies in Arteta’s mind.

“Obviously, every player has a price and if someone comes in and offers huge money, then I’m sure Arsenal would consider it, but it would have to be a massive bid for them to part with a player that brings so much quality and versatility when he is fit.

“Jakub Kiwior has filled in well in recent weeks, but he is not a long-term option at left-back and both Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu are more comfortable on the right, despite being able to play on the left.

“So, overall, I can’t see Zinchenko leaving at this stage. It would be a surprise.”

He added: “There’s also Kieran Tierney’s future to think about. I struggle to see Sociedad being able to pay Arsenal what they want for Tierney, and given the injury issues he has suffered during his loan spell, it remains to be seen whether they would be willing to turn the move permanent anyway.

Kieran Tierney in action for Real Sociedad

“I know Sociedad really like Tierney and he has made an impact with the way he has adapted to life in Spain. But the feeling speaking to those close to the club is that it is unlikely at this stage that they will look to keep him on a permanent basis.

“Should that be the case then Arsenal will look to cash in on him elsewhere, but that might be difficult. They wanted to sell Tierney last summer, but were unable to, so the loan move to Sociedad was arranged.

“The hope was that he would perform well in Spain, prove his fitness over the season and generate a big market for him this coming summer.

“But that hasn’t really happened, which might make things difficult for Edu as he looks to find a buyer for the left-back.”
