Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has confirmed he will stay at the club following the win over Manchester United in the Community Shield.

City picked up their first piece of silverware of the new season as they beat United 7-6 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Following the game there was more good news for City as Ederson confirmed he would be staying at the club despite being strongly linked with a move away.

Ederson confirms he’s staying at Manchester City

Ederson had been strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League for the majority of the summer with both Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad expressing interest and some reports had suggested he’d agreed personal terms with Al-Nassr although a fee was never agreed between the clubs.

The 30-year-old also came out on social media to deny suggestions he was affected by praise Stefan Ortega received at the back end of last season as the German came in to replace the injured Brazilian.

On City’s pre-season tour of America Guardiola had expressed his desire for the Brazil international to stay and Ederson has now confirmed he will remain at the Etihad.

Ederson celebrates winning the community shield.
Ederson has decided to remain at City despite being linked with a move away.

“The decision has been made,” he told ESPN Brazil.

“I will stay at Manchester City this season, I spoke to Pep and it was crucial, I’m happy to stay, fully focused on winning more titles here.

“I also spoke to the board, directors, teammates and I’m staying.”

Ederson has been at City since 2017 after joining from Portuguese giants Benfica and has been a mainstay for Pep Guardiola between the sticks.

The keeper has won six Premier League titles, the Champions League as well as multiple League and FA Cups.

Ederson kept 16 clean sheets in 43 appearances in all competitions and has made a total of 332 appearances for the club.

Winger Savio remains the only incoming at City so far, but the club will be absolutely delighted that Ederson has decided to stay as he’s a huge part of how the team play.

Manuel Akanji earned some redemption with the winning penalty to deliver the Community Shield for Manchester City on Sunday.

Akanji missed from the spot as Switzerland lost to England on penalties in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals this summer.

However, the centre-back stepped up and made it 7-6 for City against arch-rivals Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday, following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

“I let the others shoot first because obviously when you miss a penalty, you don’t go into the next one with that much confidence. I told Ederson I would shoot it down the middle in training so I did it and it went in,” Akanji told ITV (via BBC Sport) after the match.

“It wasn’t easy. We played well, United got a bit better before it went to 1-0. Then it was a great cross from Oscar [Bobb] and Bernardo’s header.”

Who is Man City’s best penalty taker?

Although Akanji scored the winning penalty, there’s no doubt goalkeeper Ederson was City’s star man in the shootout.

The Brazil international took a while to get going but denied Jadon Sancho with United’s fourth effort.

Ederson’s best moment was yet to come, however, as he stepped up and emphatically beat opposite number Andre Onana with City’s fifth spot-kick.

After the shootout, Ederson was Akanji’s shock pick as Man City’s best penalty taker — though given his ability on the ball, that shouldn’t be too surprising.

“Ederson is probably the best penalty taker in our team, Erling [Haaland] as well. When Ederson takes the penalty I know it is a goal,” said Akanji.

Man United are in the process of trying to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte but should the Manchester club fail to land the Uruguay star, the Red Devils could consider a move for Atalanta’s Ederson.

Ten Hag is desperate to add a new midfielder to his ranks as the Dutch coach is aware that he can’t go through the 2024/25 campaign with Casemiro as a starter in his team following his disastrous displays last term.

Ugarte has been earmarked as Man United’s top target and the Premier League giants already have an agreement over personal terms in place with the 23-year-old.

The Manchester club need to agree a transfer fee with PSG in order to get the deal over the line and club-to-club talks are currently ongoing. The Ligue 1 champions reportedly want £51m to part ways with Ugarte and at present, the English club are unwilling to match this number.

That leaves a deal for the Uruguayan in doubt and should Man United fail to sign the PSG midfielder, Ben Jacobs reports that the Manchester club are considering a move for Atalanta’s Éderson as an alternative.

Liverpool among several clubs interested in Man United target Éderson

Earlier this summer, Éderson was strongly linked with a £38m move away from Atalanta with Liverpool, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus reportedly interested in the Brazilian midfielder. However, none of these clubs made an official move for the 25-year-old, which leaves a switch to Old Trafford open.

The Brazilian impressed with the Serie A club last season as he played a big role in Atalanta winning the UEFA Europa League. His performances not only caught the attention of several big clubs, but they also earned the 25-year-old a call-up to the Brazil squad for the 2024 Copa America.

It remains to be seen if Éderson leaves Italy this summer as a move to Man United depends on what happens with Ugarte.

Manchester United have reportedly stalled in talks over the potential transfer of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte, so are looking at the likes of Atalanta star Ederson and other alternatives.

The Brazilian has impressed in his time in Serie A, as well as in last season’s Europa League as he played a part in Atalanta emerging as surprise winners of the competition.

Ederson is now being linked with Man Utd by HITC, who also report that Premier League duo Joao Gomes and Danilo, of Wolves and Nottingham Forest, respectively, also being considered.

Still, the report notes that one issue with Ederson is that Atlanta are unlikely to sell another key player this summer, with Teun Koopmeiners a top target for Juventus.

There are some other fine players out there, however, and it shouldn’t be hard to find someone who’d be quite a considerable upgrade on the ageing and under-performing Casemiro.

Ederson transfer: What else has been said about the Atalanta midfielder?

Ederson to Manchester United or Liverpool?

Ederson’s fine form has also previously seen him linked with Liverpool by Give Me Sport, while Fabrizio Romano also spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside about the Reds’ interest in the 25-year-old, which seemingly never got anywhere particularly advanced.

“Liverpool made contact with his (Ederson’s) agents weeks ago but never started any negotiation, they didn’t send a bid so far, there are no talks ongoing at this stage,” Romano said.

“We have to see if they will include Ederson in their shortlist or not, it’s really early for this and there are no meaningful changes to the situation so far. Atalanta, meanwhile, don’t want to lose both Ederson and Koopmeiners.”

Meanwhile, speaking in an interview with AS, Ederson admitted he’s curious about the possibility of playing in the Premier League.

“I don’t know, I’ve thought about it a lot, I like Italy, I’m well adapted, but I’m curious about the Premier League, so I don’t know,” Ederson said.

“I’m still growing, so I don’t know if I’ll stay in Italy, I think I still have more to prove. If I go somewhere else, then too. I will continue to grow.”

Man City goalkeeper Ederson looks set to remain at the Etihad Stadium for the 2024/25 campaign as the Brazilian’s move to Al-Ittihad is off as the Saudi Arabian club have pulled out of negotiations.

The Man City star has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League all summer as the Premier League champions rejected a proposal from Al-Nassr for the Brazil international, while Al-Ittihad had been in contact with the Manchester club over a deal and were considered the favourites out of the two.

It is being reported that Man City want £50m to part ways with Ederson this summer and that is an asking price none of the Saudi Pro League clubs are ready to match.

Ittihad would have been hopeful of negotiating down City’s asking price but having failed to do so, Fabrizio Romano reports that the deal is now off, with the Saudi club pulling out of negotiations and going down the path of signing Predrag Rajkovic from RCD Mallorca.

Man City are not fully out of the woods yet when it comes to Ederson’s future, but it looks likely that the 30-year-old will see out another year of his contract with the Premier League champions.

Ederson’s last season with Man City?

If Ederson stays at Man City for the 2024/25 campaign, it is likely to be his last with the Premier League champions as the goalkeeper’s deal at the Etihad expires in 2026. City will want a transfer fee for the Brazilian and selling the shot-stopper in 2025 would be the ideal situation for the Manchester club.

Pep Guardiola will be happy to keep the Brazil international around as he is crucial to the way Man City build out from the back.

The 30-year-old has been with City since 2017 and if it is to be his last season with the Premier League champions, the goalkeeper will want to end it on a high as the Manchester club attempt to win five Premier League titles in a row.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola wants Ederson to decide his future as soon as possible as the goalkeeper continues to be linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

The Premier League champions have already rejected a proposal from Al-Nassr for the Brazilain, while Al-Ittihad have been in contact with the Manchester club over a deal.

It is being reported that Man City want £50m to part ways with their number one goalkeeper and that is an asking price none of the Saudi Pro League clubs are ready to match. Ederson’s future is at a standstill at present, but that could change as this summer’s transfer deadline gets closer.

The 30-year-old has a contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2026 so City are not under pressure to sell the goalkeeper during the current window.

The Premier League champions are open to letting the former Benfica star leave if that is his wish as the Brazil international has won everything there is to win at the Etihad Stadium over the last seven years.

Guardiola hopes Ederson remains at Man City for one more season but has admitted that he will “understand” if the 30-year-old chooses to leave ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Pep Guardiola wants Ederson to decide his Man City future “soon”

Speaking about the future of Ederson, Guardiola has stated that he would like the goalkeeper to decide his future “as soon as possible”.

“I’d like Éderson to decide his future as soon as possible,” the Spanish coach said via Fabrizio Romano. “I only hope for him to stay with us. He’s a person I love, who I want.

“He’s a ‘porteirazo’. If he has to go… with all the pain in the heart, I’ll understand.”

Ederson’s future will likely be decided in the coming days as it currently looks like he will remain with the Premier League champions for another campaign.

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson admitted that nothing is decided in regards to his future, and that whatever happens is in “the hands of god.”

The Brazilian has been consistently linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer, and  Al-Ittihad are currently showing the most interest in his services.

Ederson captained City and played 79 minutes on Saturday against AC Milan as they lost 3-2 in New York to suffer their second consecutive pre-season defeat.

Ederson hasn’t decided his future

The 30-year-old arrived at the Etihad from Portuguese side Benfica in 2017, and has been a key part of City’s success under Pep Guardiola.

However, the Brazil international has been strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer, with a move to Al-Nassr collapsing despite agreeing personal terms.

Al-Ittihad are trying to sign the former Benfica man, but Fabrizio Romano has described a deal as difficult, with City thought to want €50m-€60m for the shot stopper.

Ederson warming up for Manchester City.
Ederson has been strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Ederson had been affected by the praise Stefan Ortega had received after the German filled in for him whilst he was injured.

Ederson released a statement on Instagram describing the claims as totally false, but Ortega is certainly pushing him for the number one spot and has been rewarded with a new contract at the Etihad.

Guardiola had stated before the game how he would love the Brazilian to stay at the club, and Ederson has spoken on his future saying he’s happy at City , but nothing has been decided.

“I am happy at Manchester City, comfortable with my teammates, I am enjoying it, too,” he said.

“I’m recovering my physical condition, so I’m calm, whatever happens is in the hands of God, he knows the right path and I’ll be happy with what he gives me.

“There’s no definition [on his City future]. Hearing this from Pep [that he wants him to stay] is gratifying.

“Eight seasons with him, many good moments, bad moments. Easy to work with, a football genius, hearing it from him is nice.”

Next up for Ederson and his City team-mates is a game against Guardiola’s former side Barcelona in Florida as preparations for the new season continue to ramp up.

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has hit back at reports suggesting he has been ‘affected’ by the praise received by teammate Stefan Ortega.

Ortega joined the Cityzens at the start of the 2022/23 campaign as back-up to Ederson, but has played a far more prominent role than expected.

The German has made 34 appearances across all competitions since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, keeping 17 clean sheets and conceding just 27 goals. Ortega’s playing time has been boosted by injury problems for Ederson, with the 31-year-old playing an important role in City’s title charge at the end of last season.

Recent reports have linked Ederson with a move away from Manchester City, with Saudi Arabia touted as a potential destination for the 25-time Brazil international, while Ortega would be expected to step up as the No.1 in the event his counterpart leaves.

Ederson hits back at ‘completely false’ reports

A recent report from The Athletic claimed Ederson had been ‘affected by praise Stefan Ortega received’ during the course of last season. However, the 30-year-old has hit back strongly at that claim.

Addressing the article on his Instagram story, Ederson wrote: “Clarifying that the note published by The Athletic yesterday refers to whether my alleged dissatisfaction with a colleague.

“It is completely false, The supposed reported day was without a doubt, one of the hardest days of my career, when I suffered a fracture that prevented me from playing in the final stretch of the season and consequently representing my country in Copa America.”

Ederson has hit back at The Athletic via Instagram.

He added: “At the time of the injury, my thought was only to continue in the match, defending City in the contest for the conquered title.

“But the emotion of the match would be greater than reality and fatally, I would have no way to continue as I would like because of the damage it caused, completely hindering my field of vision.

“I stay focused on the preparation of the season. EM31.”

Ederson’s wife, Lais Moraes also took to social media to respond: “Get better information first. This is totally fake news.”

Ederson has been present with Man City for their pre-season preparations and played the second half of their 4-3 friendly defeat to Celtic in North Carolina during the week.

Up next for Pep Guardiola’s men is a clash with AC Milan at Yankee Stadium, New York, on Saturday.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted he would “love” Ederson to stay at the club amid rumours of a move to Saudi Arabia.

City are currently in America on their pre-season tour and face AC Milan on Saturday night having lost their first game 4-3 to Celtic.

Guardiola has taken a very young squad on tour, with a number of City’s established stars on holiday following their exploits at the Euros and Copa America.

Guardiola wants Ederson to stay

There have been question marks over the future of Ederson, who has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer.

The Brazilian, who has been at City since joining from Benfica in 2017 saw a move to Al-Nassr collapse despite agreeing personal terms with the Saudi outfit.

Al-Ittihad are now trying to sign the Brazil international, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has described the deal as difficult due to City wanting €50m-€60m euros for the shot stopper.

Ederson has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

The Athletic reported that Ederson, who has two years left on his deal at the Etihad, had been affected by the praise Stefan Ortega received after filling in for the 30-year-year-old last season when he was injured.

Ederson released a statement on Instagram denying those claims, saying they were “completely false.”

The keeper is part of City’s squad for their US tour and Guardiola has said he would love him to stay and that he’s an important figure in the dressing room.

“I wish with the bottom of my heart Eddie will continue with us,” the Spaniard said.

“I would love him to stay.

“I cannot imagine our processes succeeding these last seasons without him. He is an important figure in the locker room.”

Ederson has made 332 appearances for City and has won 16 trophies at the Etihad, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Man City are winning their battle to keep hold of goalkeeper Ederson ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as Saudi Arabian clubs remain interested in the Brazilian star.

Al-Ittihad have been interested in the 30-year-old throughout the summer transfer window and are currently in talks to get a deal for the Premier League star over the line. However, these discussions have stalled.

According to Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between Al Ittihad and Man City for Ederson are not progressing, with a deal said to be complicated. The Saudi Arabian club are now believed to be considering their options as they have a list of targets, which includes goalkeepers in La Liga.

The main problem seems to be around the transfer fee for the Brazilian with Man City demanding €50m/€60m to part ways with one of their key players. The Premier League champions have been clear about this fee from the beginning and there will be no green light until it is matched.

This is good news for Man City fans as they will not have wanted to lose their goalkeeper heading into the new season but €60m would also be nice for a player who has shown signs of decline over the last 12 months.

Ederson’s tricky situation at Man City

The situation of Ederson at Man City is tricky as the player wants to leave and the Premier League champions are happy to sell the goalkeeper as his contract at the Etihad Stadium expires in 2026.

The Brazilian has also shown signs of decline but still remains a key player for Pep Guardiola as the 30-year-old is important for the way City build out from the back.

Stefan Ortega is ready to take over from Ederson should he leave Man City ahead of the 2024/25 campaign getting underway next month, but that won’t be happening unless Al Ittihad match the Manchester club’s asking price.
